The Chicago International Film Festival is always one of my favorite, must-attend events.  This year, for its 50th, founder Michael Kutza and his incredible staff blasted it out of the ballpark!  The Opening Night Red Carpet event was almost too exciting for words, but I’ll try.  This star-studded evening premiered “Miss Julie“, the latest film directed by veteran actress and

Ingmar Bergman collaborator, Liv Ullmann.  (Michael has premiered every single one of her 50 films at his Festival, so to say she is beloved is an understatement).  The film stars Golden Globe-award winning actors Jessica Chastain, Samantha Morton and Colin Farrell.  The film is based on August Strindberg’s 1888 ground-breaking naturalistic drama, “Miss Julie” that takes place over the course of one midsummer

night in an Irish country estate.  The haughty Miss Julie (Jessica Chastain) and her father’s lowly valet John (Colin Farrell) charm and manipulate each other culminating in a final act as “sublime and devastating as anything in Greek tragedy.”  Colin Farrell, Festival jury chairman Kathleen Turner, Festival founder/artistic director Michael Kutza, Liv Ullmann and “The

Davies and dear Rudy Segovia from WCIU.  It was so exciting, but my knees were knocking since you just never know how conducive these Red Carpet peeps will be to questions.  I came prepared, but nothing prepared me for the raw sexuality that Colin Farrell oozed. (Meow!)  I’ve been fortunate to meet quite a few hunky film types, but he beat all.  As a matter of

Victor Skrebneski

fact, I told him just that when he came to my mic.  I said, “You’re so insanely handsome, I’ve forgotten my questions.”  He was friendly and willing to talk, but very, very serious.  When he looked you in the eyes, it seemed like he could see right through you.  I could certainly see why he is called one of the “bad boys” of Hollywood.  (Coincidentally, the week

awesome Kathleen Turner, who was at the Festival in the capacity of Jury Chair.  When she opened her mouth to speak, you could hear a pin drop.  Husky, throaty, sexy and with so much intelligence, it was awe-inspiring.  (Make sure you check out the video following this segment because she

It was also an honor to talk to Liv Ullmann.  For every question, she provided a thought-provoking answer.  I also loved what she said about her next project.  (Again, don’t miss the video!)  After the excitement of the Red

The 23rd annual Friends of Conservation Gala was another great success due to the dedication of its chair and president Reute Butler and her legion of supporters.  Established in 1982, the FOC helps prevent wildlife and habitat degradation in the Masai Mara, one

of the most ecologically important regions of the world. Their longtime royal patron, HRH The Prince of Wales, sent a moving message again this year that congratulated the FOC and lamented on the egregious loss of elephants in the wild.  It said, in part: ” Africa’s elephants are in desperate trouble.

Poachers are now killing more every year than are being born. The latest estimate of the loss is around 35,000 per year, or 7% of the population, yet the birth rate is only 5%. If this continues, the species will disappear from the face of the Earth in less than a century. In some areas the situation is far worse. The population of forest elephants in Central Africa has plummeted by over 60% in the last decade. This year’s slaughter

We shot the feature in February!  I was sure it was trashed and would never see the light of day.  Six former Playboy Playmates were flown to New York to shoot with world famous photographer Nadav Kander for a New York Magazine shoot.  The article would revisit

The shoot took place at Jack Studios in the heart of Chelsea.  It was quite an elaborate production with hair, makeup, set design, lighting and camera people darting this way and that.  The wardrobe room alone would rival any department store. It was great to see my friend Laura Lyons again.  We’d been Bunnies together at the Chicago Playboy Club.  She was

Bunny of the Year in 1975 and I was BOY in ’76.  We had a lot of laughs, then and now.  That’s the great thing about being a Playmate, it’s an exclusive sorority that connects us in ways I could’ve never imagined.  I’m still friends with the girls I worked with as well as former art directors, photographers, press people and more–any and all with an association with Playboy,

Wardrobe, wardrobe, wardrobe!

I’m still happy to call my friends.  As a matter of fact, I just shot a campaign for Caffeinated Club yesterday with two former Playboy photographers, Kevin Kuster and Scott Anderson, who were on staff when I was a Playmate (what a

THE WINDY CITY WELCOMES HOLLYWOOD KINGS

Blog 1 - Sugar Rautbord and Larry King Sometimes opportunities come around when you least expect them. I have known, loved and admired socialite/author Sugar Rautbord for many a year. Her global connections are well known and her stories are fascinating as she calls many world leaders her friends. So, Blog 2 when she called and asked me if I would like to ride in the limo with legendary talk show host/author Larry King to Wrigley Field to see him throw out the first pitch, I had to pinch myself. I’ve always known and admired him (who hasn’t?) but it wasn’t until I had the opportunity to sit with him and ask questions that I came to know what a legend he truly is. He was in town to promote his current Blog 3 - With Larry and Sugar riding to Wrigley book, “Truth Be Told,” which is described as “a fascinating collection of stories and anecdotes about favorite guests, memorable Blog 4 - Larry with Cubs Manager Tony LaRussa moments, funniest jokes and a half-century of asking questions.” I can’t wait to read this one, right after I read his last book, “How to Talk to Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere.” (With my new gig as host of “Social Blog 5 - Cute Cubs Marketing Manager Katie Marta Circles,” I think this book will come in VERY handy!) And speaking of “Social Circles,” I was even allowed to have my cameraman, Fred Jackson, in the Blog 5 - Howard Tullman and Sugar’s sugar cookies! car with me so we could record each and every precious moment. At most, I was expecting a sound bite from Larry enroute to the ballpark, but what I received was 25 minutes of uninterrupted “Larry King-isms” that I will never forget. He recounted his friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he said will never speak on a cell phone. So when a call came in for Larry at his barbershop from the Russian Prez, Larry’s Blog 6 - Larry’s passion for baseball shows! barber took the call and said, “Some clown is on the Blog 7 - Signing autographs for ALL who asked! phone saying he’s Putin!” (Putin said this about Larry: “In U.S., there are many talented and interesting people. But, still, there is just one King.”) And then there was the time that Saddam Hussein called Larry when he was enjoying himself at a restaurant with friends. Larry told the waiter, “Put him on hold.” Blog 8 - Jesse Jackson with glam daughter Santita Former President Bill Clinton called King during his impeachment proceedings and the first thing he asked was “Who’s Blog 9 - Ken Norgan, Helen Melchior, Joan Colmar and Cheryl Burton winning?” knowing how passionate Larry is about baseball. King also talked about growing up poor in Brooklyn and remembers his first pair of glasses was courtesy of government aid. When I asked him how he met his gorgeous wife, Shawn, he said in L.A. in Blog 10 - Alison Rosati and her cute NBC cameraman front of Tiffany’s. “It became pretty expensive…I wish it had been a Target!” At the ballpark, he was inundated with fans requesting him to sign their baseballs and take photos – Blog 11 - Darby Hill with hubby and Larry and he obliged every single one of them. He also shared a sweet moment on the field with Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa: When Larry playfully tried to switch baseball caps with him for a photo, Tony wasn’t having any of it and Blog 12 held the cap for the camera instead. (BTW, Larry brought the Cubs luck, even though he’s a Dodgers fan – they beat the Cardinals 5-4 in 10 innings!) His long-time friend, Sugar Rautbord, Blog 13 - Larry with Leslie Hindman hosted a book launch party for him, along with International Insurance exec Debra Hoag, later that evening at her posh Gold Coast condo with lots of friends in attendance. Seen on the scene were Jesse Jackson (talking presidential politics with Larry), Leslie Hindman, Lynne Blog 14 - Larry, Father Costello and Marilyn Miglin Bredfeldt, ABC anchor Cheryl Burton (wearing the cutest hot pants), Cancer Treatment Centers of America CEO Steve Bonner, Sophie Bross, film director Party co-hosts Debra Hoag and Sugar with Larry Matthew Miele, Marilyn Miglin and her daughter Marlena, Holly Hunt, Jerry Stone, Chef Art Smith, Lane Davis, former Miss Arkansas and equestrian Darby Hill, Sun-Times’ Laura Washington, Chicago Mag’s Rich Gamble and NBC’s Alison Rosati, among many others. After the party, Sugar and 10 of Larry’s pals headed off to Rivers Casino for dinner. Oh, what a day AND night! :) (All photos by Mila Samokhina with additional pics by Mitch Canoff.)

Blog 1 - Honoree Martin Sheen with Film Fest founder Michael Kutza This same night, the 47th Chicago International Film Festival) honored Martin Sheen with a long overdue Lifetime Achievement Award. Martin came to town with his handsome Blog 2 - Governor Quinn, Monica Walter and Martin Sheen son, Emilio Estevez, as part of their 32-city, grass-roots promo tour of their film, “The Way.” Film Fest Founder and Artistic Director Michael Kutza couldn’t have chosen a more worthy recipient to Blog 3 - Dan Uslan, producer David Alexanian and Emilio Estevez honor than this hard-working, remarkable and much-loved film icon. Sheen remarked to the crowd, after Governor Quinn honored him with a proclamation naming August 19th as “Martin Blog 4 - Donna LaPietra and event emcee Bill Kurtis Sheen and Emilio Estevez Day” in Chicago, that he ‘hopes after all this fuss that you like the movie!” (Governor Quinn told me later that Sheen, being the avid human rights activist that he is, had Blog 4 - With Martin! contacted him to ask him to abolish the death penalty.) As for the movie, “The Way” is described as “a powerful, inspirational, and often amusing story about family, friends and the Blog 5 - Committee Chair Rich Varnes and cute wife Cynthia challenge of navigating through an ever-changing world.” Estevez, who wrote, directed and co-starred in the film, describes it as “essentially the retelling of ‘The Wizard of Oz’” with Sheen portraying Dorothy in her quest to find her way home.  After Sheen received his Silver Blog 7 - Film Fest founder Michael Kutza with Emilio Estevez Hugo from Kutza, he remarked that “it looks like the Blessed Mother!” He also said he would follow FDR’s advice to “be sincere, be brief and be seated.” Emcee Bill Kurtis had an opportunity to tease the Blog 8 - Andrew Hayes and Tsi-tsi-ki Felix Governor with his comment, “Wouldn’t this [the theatre] make a great casino?” In the media line before the screening, the loving father and son talked to each and every reporter! Emilio has piercing Blog 9 - Chic people at film premiere eyes just like his dad and when I told him so, he said, “And no contacts!” He loved directing his father, whom he said “has such dignity,” and is “always on time and knows all of his Blog 10 - Bob
Graham and glam friend lines.” He also said his dad inspired him to write the story. In a London Telegraph interview, when asked if he had considered any other actor for the lead Blog 11 - Autographed Paul McCartney guitar role, Estevez said, “Dad wanted me to. He said, ‘You ought to go to Michael Douglas. You’re not going to get this movie made with me.’ But I said, ‘I’m only making this movie with you.’ Then he said, ‘Mel Gibson should play this part.’  I said, you are playing this Blog 12 - Interviewing Emilio Estevez for Social Circles role. Stop.’ That’s the level of his generosity.” The love and respect between these two men was palpable and a joy to see. When I spoke to Martin, I asked him how he liked Chicago and he Blog 13 - Guitar autographed by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band said, “This is not only a city of Big Shoulders, but of big hearts, too.” And I couldn’t agree more! After the movie, the Film Fest’s annual Summer Gala was held across the street at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers. Even the walk to the after-party was exciting as Jeanne Malkin (R) and friend you wound your way past 11 Lincolns (one of the event’s sponsors) and through the pulsating light beams of the six massive searchlights. It made me feel like I was in Hollywood at the premiere of “Casablanca!” (Summer Gala Committee Chair Rich Varnes did an Blog b outstanding job along with his notable host committee!) The party continued the movie’s Spanish theme with flamenco dancers, tapas and Sangria along with a huge memorabilia-filled auction that included two guitars, one signed by Paul McCartney and the other red, white and blue one, signed Blog a by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band! There were also sports jerseys from Patrick Kane, Derrick Rose and Billy Williams; a Carlos Zambrano baseball; a Kermit the Frog sketch signed by Jim Henson; a signed “Peanuts” cartoon sketch; signed film fest posters as well as signed movie posters by Sheen and Estevez. There was even an Oscar poster signed by Jack Nicholson, Robert Redford, Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg among many others. This year’s Chicago International Film Festival runs from October 6th through 20th. (All photos by Mila Samokhina with additional pics by Steve Starr.)

Blog 1 - Chef Takashi Yagihashi There is such diversity in Chicago for events! You can go high, you can go low or you can go fest! The first (hopefully annual) Street Food Artistry event was held recently at Galleria Blog 2 - Mason and event co-founder Alicia-August Wright Marchetti. This event celebrated the rich street food culture in Chicago and had something for everyone! Guests sampled tastings from Bistro One West, Dawali Mediterranean Kitchen, Dark Matter Coffee Company, E.leaven Food Company, English Bar & Restaurant, Porkchop and Wow Blog 3 - Heather Hannon, Lindsey Hays and Andrea Schwartz Bao. Participating food trucks included Bergstein’s NY Deli Truck, Forever Yoghurt Truck and the Old School Root Beer Float Cart among others. Macy’s Chefs A-Go-Go Tour Blog 4 - Jada and Chef Julius Russell featured the Mobi Munch Truck manned by charming Chef Takashi Yagihashi. (Watch for his new restaurant, Slurping Turtle, coming soon to 116 W. Hubbard St.) His delicious and healthy noodle dish with secret sauce was to die for! I also loved the LickLick truck for the Blog 5 poochies, manned by cute owner Andreana Droz. Porkchop offered delicious shredded pork sandwiches grilled with whiskey corks!?! It was tasty (hic!)  though! Chef Julius Russell gave cooking demonstrations using Chilean Blog 6 - “Sweet” Chef Darius Williams ingredients – he is so sweet and talented that it’s no wonder he has just been named Culinary Ambassador to Chile! With wife Jada by his side, they make a formidable team. :) There was also a kids’ cooking demo by handsome Chef Eric Paul. Live entertainment included the sweet Blog 7 - Eleni Hountolas, Dimitri Douvalakis, Miguel Chavez sounds of Chicago Street Musicians’ Meisha Herron, M.A.D.D. Rhythms, The Real Connection, Soul People and H2O Soul. There was also an interactive, live photo shoot by fine art and fashion photographer Geraldine Rodriguez. Blog 8 - Alexis and Alex Straus This event was presented by President and Co-founder Patrice Perkins (My Lifestyle Zen) and Co-founder Alicia August-Wright (A’Vents by August), both who wanted to bring Chicago’s diverse communities together as one. Proceeds from the silent auction benefitted University of Chicago Charter School, Common Threads and Chicago Street Musicians.

FROM BECKETT TO LT. DAN BAND—THE STEPPENWOLF GALA ROCKED!

Blog 1 - Maggie Daley with her darling daughter, Nora Daley Conroy, Linda Rice Johnson and friend The Steppenwolf Gala is one of the hottest tickets in town and is almost always sold out before any invites are even sent out so when we were lucky enough to be Blog 2 - Elegant Jan Melk and actress Amy Morton invited, we jumped at the chance. This year the attire was urban chic/black tie optional. In the past, it has always been full-out evening gowns and tuxes which I’ve always loved but the crowd was very chic Blog 3 - Governor Pat Quinn and co-chair Sarah Beardsley with the winning dress going to my lovely table host, Jan Melk: Her champagne colored, delicately embroidered Valentino made me weep. Our friends Deb and John Gross picked us up in their chauffeured Phantom V vintage 1960 Rolls Royce to start the evening off in Blog 4 grand style. (They even brought along two bottles of Dom Perignon 2000 given to them by the owners of the vineyard for the table!) There is always a pre-Gala performance at the theater and this year, they presented an excerpt from Beckett’s “Endgame” featuring William Petersen, Artistic Director Martha Lavey, Ian Barford and Francis Guinan. At the end of the performance, a marching band played raucously in the aisles Blog 5 - Bonnie and Jim Spurlock with Desiree Rogers and played the crowd out to the trolleys which were waiting to take guests a few blocks away to their Blog 6 - Victory Garden's Jan Kallish, Betty Cerf Hill, Bruce Sagan and Melinda Jakovich new venue for this year at 1460 N. Halsted. The space was an empty building which was donated for tonight’s gala and it fit the bill perfectly. The décor was sheer magic—leafy ferns with dramatic uplights nestled inside as well as four-foot-tall mini trees with glowing orbs in their branches.  It was literally an enchanted woodland and everyone oohed and aahed. I Blog 7 - Deb and John Gross pose in their Rolls limo learned this night that two major event/floral companies had merged their Blog 8 - Steppenwolf Ensemble members onstage after Endgame performance talents so it was no surprise that the room looked so beautiful. Ronsley and Heffernan Morgan are now partners so watch out Chicago—they will be a formidable collaboration for sure! Co-chairs for the evening included Jan Melk, Sarah Beardsley, Charles James III and David Kalt. Contributors and major supporters each had an ensemble member seated at their table for the dinner. We were fortunate to have the charming and Blog 9 - Jay Franke and Grace Barry talented Amy Morton at ours. Gary Cole was at the table next to us and both were gracious in their exchanges with Blog 10 - Joel Cabrera and Carrie Lannon fans and friends which was so nice to see. The dinner was excellent and started with a salad with lemon bay dressing, grilled will Pacific coast spotted prawns in a basil yogurt sauce followed by Chicago Spice House rubbed beef sirloin and grilled Green City Market asparagus…and then the live auction began. Steppenwolf has always been known for their unique Blog 11 -Mike Reschke, Charlie Besser and Michael Leventhal auction packages since the actors who are involved always come up with creative ideas to raise money. Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning ensemble member Tracy Blog 12 - Nordstrom's Tara Solomon Letts offered a dinner for eight in his home prepared by Chef Michael Kornick (MK Restaurant) with guest of honor actress Amy Morton which went for $14,000. ABC’s “Modern Family” star Eric Stonestreet (who plays Cameron) offered an on-set visit for four with hotel and first-class airfare via United that went for $16,000. Four people won Blog 13 - With Kathy Leventhal, co-chair Sarah Beardsley Tetzlaff and Nancy Reschke a chance to celebrate opening night of “Mice and Men” directed by ensemble member and Tony Award-winning director Anna D. Shapiro, invitations to the exclusive post-performance cast Blog 14 - Carmine and Dawn Matozzi party plus roundtrip first-class airfare that brought $14,000. Ten friends won the dinner party at the Elysian with ensemble member John Malkovich for $17,000. Gary Sinise’s package raised the most money for the evening. He offered four people tickets to the Sixth Annual CSI:NY Mid-Season Concert Bash that he hosts Blog 15 - Charlie and Rebecca Besser for all of the actors and crews working at CBS. This package also included a set tour, hotel accommodations and first-class roundtrip airfare. TWO of these packages were sold at $25,000 each! After dessert, Gary Sinise and his Lt. Dan Band got everyone onto the dance floor and when they finished around 12:30 a.m., a DJ took over and the party kept on going but we were well on our way home to turn back into pumpkins by then! What a fabulously fun evening…only in Chicago baby! (Did I say the Mayor and Maggie were there? They came to support their daughter, Nora Daley Conroy, who is the Executive Committee Chair…sweet!). ‘TWAS THE NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS IN CHICAGO

Blog 1 - The entry to the Zoo Lights Festival at the Lincoln Park Zoo ‘Twas the night before Christmas and all through Chicago
Not a creature was stirring, not even Blago!
The property tax payments were all in the mail
With hopes that our aldermen stay out of jail.

Blog 2 - Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza The Chihuahuas were nestled all snug in their beds
While visions of “Tails in the City” danced in their heads.
And I in my Manolos and Chuck dressed so swell
We readied ourselves for a night at RL.

Blog 3 - Beautiful tree in the Drake Hotel Their miniature train display is not to be missed When all of a sudden, we heard on ‘GN
That down at City Hall
Some news had come in…

Blog 4 - Famous Old Town cottage When what to our wondering eyes should appear
But a miniature sleigh flying o’er Navy Pier!

Blog 5 - Lincoln Park Conservatory With a cute little driver so lively and cagey
We knew in a moment it must be St. Daley!
More clever than foxes, his alderman came
And he whistled and shouted and called them by name!

Blog 6 - Entrance to Hefner’s former private residence next to the Mansion Now, Burke! Now Vi Daley and Walter Burnett,
On Munoz and Reilly and Flores and Tunney
I need this year’s Christmas to be quite a honey.

Blog 7 - One of Macy’s holiday windows that includes the famous Marshall Field’s clock to the leftAs I turned to Chuck to say we must part
The Mayor issued this statement
Which made us both start:

Blog 8 - Gold Coast home “The Olympics aren’t ours and for that I am sorry
But I hope that your holidays are joyous and starry!
Christmas in Chicago—nothing compares!
And remember to keep the troops all in your prayers.”

With my deepest apology to Clement Clarke Moore! And now here are more “gratitude thoughts” from some of my friends…but first click here for some more great holiday images of our fair city!

Chaz and Roger Ebert Chaz and Roger Ebert had this to say: “One of the best Christmas gifts we ever gave was a donation to Nelson Mandela’s “Save the Children Fund” when we were in South Africa in 2001. In return, we were able to bid on a Christmas tree made by orphans. This tree is made of metal and hand-strung crystals and has portals for setting candles. Roger and I were so touched by the handiwork of the orphans that we had the tree shipped to Chicago so that we could start a new tradition with it. Every year, we install this tree along with our traditional fir tree. We encircle the South African tree with friends and family and each person takes a turn lighting a candle and making a wish for the New Year or stating something for which she/he is grateful. It is a lovely and poignant celebration. It is a gift that keeps on giving.”

Alex McCord NY Housewife Alex McCord says, “I am most grateful for all of our dear, crazy friends. When life is a whirlwind, those that ground us (even if they’re wearing feathers) are the ones we have on speed dial!” Her favorite gift to husband Simon was finding and replacing copies of some of his favorite albums that had been lost, broken or deleted over the years plus a few new titles from his favorite bands. She said, “It didn’t take much effort but the smile on his face was priceless!”

Brian Atwood Handsome Bally head designer Brian Atwood said, “I am thankful for my health and my wonderful family. Without them, NOTHING matters….and for having a wonderful person in my life….. I have a lot to be thankful for.” The best gift HE’S ever received was an “amazing photograph of a white Lamborghini Countach.” He said, “It was soooo beautiful and always inspired me.”

With love and thanks at Christmastime to all of my readers…..Have a VERY Happy Holiday and a Happy New Year! We will be at the Playboy Mansion for New Year’s Eve and I look forward to sharing all of the fun with you when we return!

Holiday Tips from the Pros!

Well, the holidays are upon us and I love seeing all of the fabulous decorations and décor! My blog this week has the Top Holiday Tips from the Pros. They cover every aspect of the season: hair, makeup, entertaining, cooking, décor and more. I hope you will find them as helpful as I have!

Ref_DSC01926_0008Dsc04184For the past eight years, I’ve been lucky enough to have my friend, Jeff Jonen, and his crew of elves, Scot Sauer and Andrew Bundy, help me install my Christmas decorations. We always do it the day after Thanksgiving and it’s so much fun. We laugh, work and eat donuts and Christmas cookies until we’re all sick but it is so Ref_DSC01968_0011 worth it. Our neighbors even call to thank us! I’m now passing his information along to you because he can do anything, is very creative and is a joy to work with. His magical shop, Fresh or Faux, is filled with all manner of flowers and plants – as the name states – fresh and faux! Maybe next year you will make your neighbors happy, too!  The following are Jeff Jonen’s top five tips for holiday decorating:

1)    Mix fresh with faux. Who’s gonna know? Fresh pine arranged with faux flowers like tulips and amaryllis will make a stunning centerpiece that will last all season.
2)    Reinvent your holiday décor by displaying familiar decorations in new locations.
3)    Use a foot switch to turn on hard to reach holiday lights.
4)    Your holiday décor should tell a story. Ask relatives for old Christmas decorations (they usually throw them out) and display them in a grouping to portray a family history of Christmas past.
5)    Shop for next year this year! Have a concept in mind for a holiday display and purchase items after Christmas for a fraction of the cost. When you bring them out next year, all will be new and with extravagant savings!

DSC04226The following are tips from party planner extraordinaire, Greg Hyder (catering director for the Peninsula). His holiday parties are on everyone’s hope-to-be-invited list.
1)    Get organized. Proper preparation makes a great soiree so have a timetable, be realistic and set attainable deadlines.
2)    Conceptualize. How do you envision the party? Casual, formal, theme inspired, over-the-top or understated?
3)    Plan the mood and settings. Aromas, music, ambiance. Think about your favorite holiday memories and use these to make your event memorable for others. Use creative ideas to make little “wows” for each guest.
4)    Don’t wait until the last minute! Do as much as possible ahead of time, especially tedious tasks like polishing silver, etc. A rested host is a good host!
5)    Have FUN!! If you are at ease, your guests will be, too! No stress, just smiles!

Chef_Art_Smith-GB04 Chef Art Smith is our local treasure. Not only is his restaurant, Table 52, rated one of the best in the country, his Common Threads organization is a godsend for many children across the country. Here are his expert tips for the holidays:
1)    Buy a live tree and plant it in your yard or buy a smaller one for your terrace. No one ever remembers to water a Christmas tree!
2)    Collect tree ornaments. They are more charming than having the hot design of the year.
3)    Don’t forget the pets! They remember….
4)    Make the freezer your best friend. Most great holiday foods can be kept fresh and preserved. I love an ice box fruit cake!
5)    A delicious juicy Allen Brothers rib roast is a wonderful Chicago tradition.
6)    Discover the cheese ball again! Homemade is better!

Ref_FH010022 Nicole Jacob is the go-to makeup artist for many of the area’s high-profile women. She was pictured in W Magazine recently and named as “the one to watch” and “be prepared for waitlist status.” You can find her at the Paul Rehder Salon at 939 N. Rush St. Added bonus: her own cosmetic line is FABULOUS!
1)    Please don’t wear red lipstick just because of the holiday. It looks awful on most people.
2)    If you want to be festive with color, change your eyeliner. Blue, purple and grey are all great colors for now.
3)    The most important tip is MASCARA! There is no better way to say this: If you wear no makeup, light makeup or glam makeup, LOAD, LOAD, LOAD on the mascara. Everyone I’ve ever come across is always too light handed with this. We’ll never beat Tammy Faye so don’t be scared. Even better for special evenings are fake lashes!
4)    Bronzer. I think this is the most important product for winter. This is when we are the palest and need it the most.
5)    Lip gloss, lip gloss, LIP GLOSS! Everyday, all day. It makes us look younger at every age. Make sure it’s a light color—not too dark. I even wear it to bed; it makes me feel better.
6)    Always keep a clean brow, as a well-groomed brow gives a polished look.

(Bonus Tip! During the winter, we are extra dry. Under the eyes and on the face, use a drop of eye cream and mix it with your concealer and makeup. Apply it with clean fingers because they add natural oil. Instant glow and moisture for the skin.)

Ref_FH000001 Everyone knows and loves designer to the stars – and one of Oprah’s favorites – Nate Berkus. Besides being adorable, he has a whole new line of his fabulous home furnishings available at http://www.hsn.com. Now you can see his top tips for decorating for the season and beyond:
1)    Your sofa will have an "instant makeover" with new pillows and a throw.
2)    I love silver bowls filled with all one color solid ornaments mixed with votives on the table or fireplace.
3)    A little ethnicity goes a long way in setting the table. An African bowl lined with a linen napkin for bread, woven placemats mixed with your good china….go for contrast when setting the table.
4)   Never under estimate the allure of candles; they truly transform a space. Keep the lights low and remember, NO scented candles in the dining room…that should smell like food!!
5)   When guests or family come to stay, the nightstand in my guestroom always has three things: fresh flowers, a tray for jewelry and things you take out of your pockets, and a bottle of water.

DSC04181 Charles Ifergan, as you know, is my go-to guy for hairstyling. He has a world of knowledge that he has taught his wonderful staff and now he is sharing his top holiday hair styling tips with you:
1)    Look like yourself. Do not have a hairstyle that makes you feel it is not you.
2)    Tease your regular hair style – it gives it more of a “party look.”
3)    Even if you don’t usually use hair spray, do it for that night.
4)    Curls are big. On your next haircut appointment, ask your stylist to show you how to make soft curls with your curling iron or, better yet, a flat iron.
5)    A hair ornament gives any hair style a festive look.

Photo: Charles Ifergan

Ref_DSC00862 And finally, these are MY tips!!!  I know, I know….I’m not a pro but it’s my blog so here goes 🙂
1)     Don’t be afraid to wear a corny holiday sweater. It will make you and everyone else who sees you smile! Best ones can be found at
The Country Ewe, Ltd.
2)    Candles, of course, but not just any candles: My two favorites are by Yankee Candle – Sparkling Pine and Silver Bells. They are like having Christmas trees in a jar!
3)     Feed the birds! It’s easy to feed your favorite songbirds like finches by going to
Dominick’sand buying nyjer finch socks. They are filled and ready to hang on a tree branch or even on that empty plant hook on your patio. So easy and so kind.
4)    Holiday music should be on at all times when you’re home. My very favorite compilation of songs is called “Under the Mistletoe.” It has favorites by Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Lena Horne, Peggy Lee, Nancy Wilson, Perry Como and more.
5)    Instead of giving gifts this year to each other, ask your friends to donate to your favorite charity. Charities need your help now more than ever and it will teach your children the true gift of Christmas.

Bonus Tip! One of the BEST gifts I’ve found for the young and the “young at heart” under $25 has to be the latest 3-D (!!!) Polar Express DVD! If you haven’t already seen this classic Christmas movie in 3-D at the IMAX then you are in for a REAL treat! It even has four pairs of 3-D glasses included in the box! I am waiting for just the right snowy evening to watch it again; it was one of the biggest thrills of my Christmas movie watching life and you should share it with your loved ones, too. You will thank me later 🙂

Bonus Tip #2! Buy an ornament from every place at home or abroad that you travel to with friends or family. Then every year when you trim your tree, these wonderful memories will become fresh in your mind again.

I hope these tips will help to make your holiday happy, healthy and fun-filled! God bless us, every one! 🙂

Lv_monogramouflage-bag-charm1 In fashion news, I was so depressed looking for new wardrobe for fall and winter: The prices, especially in this economy, are out of sight! It seemed that everything I touched was so expensive so I have come up with some other ideas on how to update my clothes for the season. For instance, Louis Vuitton is selling the most gorgeous purse charms to attach to your handbags. Just clip them on to give new life to old handbags and to create a very chic look—all of the women in Paris are doing it so it must be so! Also, instead of a new jacket, I am just buying a couple of new scarves and throwing it over my existing ones. I love the Hermes oversized silk and cashmere ones and since they’re classics, they will always be in style.  A good investment all around… Photo: top left, Louis Vuitton Monogramouflage cag charm.
