FROM PICKLE BASH TO UNGALA: HOW 2025 IS REDEFINING FUNDRAISING

I'm so hopeful about 2025! I can't wait to see what the future holds and what new ideas and events our nonprofit community comes up with for fundraising! I want to congratulate Ronald McDonald House Charities for coming up with an alternative to a gala theme- their Pickle Bash at SPF Chicago on Jan. 25 was a huge success. The Lookingglass Theatre Company is hosting an UnGala on Feb. 8 and debuting the world premiere of "Circus Quixote." On March 1, Make-A-Wish Illinois is hosting an event simply called "I Wish to Party," which I think will be a more casual version of some of their other fundraising efforts. Creativity will rule in 2025 and I am totally here for it!

The theme of this year’s celebration was inspired by Chef Art’s visit to Mexicali, Mexico, a city uniquely defined by its Chinese and Mexican heritage. While visiting his friend Alfredo Casteneda in Palm Springs, Chef Art was introduced to Mexicali’s Chinese cuisine and the warm hospitality of Alfredo’s mother, Juana. This experience sparked the idea for the event, which was brought to life with the guidance of Chef Carol, Reunion Chef Chris De La Cueva, Sporty Bird

The South Loop was buzzing with excitement as former Chicago Bears star Israel Idonije and acclaimed chef Stephen Gillanders officially opened The Staley with a lively Block Party on January 27. The highly anticipated restaurant, located at the corner of Wabash and 14th, drew an enthusiastic crowd eager to celebrate the new neighborhood hotspot. More than 600 guests attended the day’s festivities, with 250 select guests gathering for the exclusive 6 p.m. Grand Opening Block Party. The event brought together a dynamic mix of sports legends, media personalities and influential figures, all showing support for Idonije and Gillanders’ latest venture. Among the

The champions of the tournament also took home $100 gift certificates to SPF Chicago, generously provided by owner Rich Green. months, its reservation list is already long. Yet, as soon as we entered the inviting space, the tinkle of the piano, the soft glow of low lights and the inviting ambiance assured us it was well worth the wait. The menu is filled with French specialties like mussels, onion soup, escargot; steak tartare; Salmon Wellington (a house specialty) and more. A lot of these dishes are not created the way you would expect, but they were all tasty. The buzz was delightful with everyone happily tucking into beautiful French dishes under exposed wooden beams and brick walls with the bustle of the kitchen open for all to see. The owner, Lucien, was at the end of the bar thanking diners as they left- a nice touch. I won’t lie, this Lincoln Park brasserie isn’t cheap, but it is a wonderful and unique dining experience. Fashion Group International (FGI) Chicago announced its inaugural Blue Jacket Fashion Show Brunch, a stylish affair, with proceeds from a silent auction benefiting ZERO Prostate Cancer, on Sat., Feb. 22, from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Guild Row in Chicago’s vibrant Avondale neighborhood. Inspired by New York Fashion Week’s acclaimed Blue Jacket Fashion Show, founded in 2016 by designer Frederick Anderson, this event aims to bring critical conversations about men’s health to the forefront—with a particular focus on cancer education, prevention and treatment. While the New York edition garners national attention with celebrity participation and media coverage, FGI Chicago’s brunch brings this vital cause home, spotlighting local talent and engaging the city’s creative community. The Randolph Street Market Festival returns strong in 2025 with a mix of vintage, antique and artisanal finds across a variety of exciting events. The season kicks off on April 27 with Modern Vintage Chicago at Ravenswood Event Center, offering vintage clothing, jewelry, furniture and collectibles. On May 24-25, the Festival opens its doors at 1341 W Randolph St. with a "Garden Party" theme, featuring over 200 vendors, live music, DJs, food and drinks. In the fall, Highland Park hosts the Vintage Shindig on Sept. 13-14 at the Highland Park Community House, bringing a curated selection of vintage goods to the North Shore. Later that month, the Randolph Street Market Festival returns to the West Loop on Sept. 27-28 for another weekend of shopping and entertainment. In the end, Cole Custer, won the Xfinity Series race (even though it was cut short due to rain) and Shane van Gisbergen won the inaugural Chicago Street Race, the Grant Park 220. As you can tell, I am a fan. BUT, I do understand the cons to this race as well. There were many, many valid complaints. The biggest for me was how little the city got paid for this event, $500,000 permit fee compared to the rent bill for Lollapalooza, which was $8 million (according to this Sun-Times article). So there's that…..

Conservatories at The Chicago High School for the Arts (ChiArts). The event was co-chaired by Arnett Faulker and Amisha Rigia and honored Susan McKeever and The McKeever Family. The fundraiser highlighted ChiArts faculty, alums and featured scholar-artist performances throughout the evening. ChiArts’ five arts conservatories are 100% donor-funded through the Foundation. They raise over $3 million annually for ChiArts to champion a tuition-free model and sustain a public arts high school for Chicago’s youth. The experience showcases the mystique and cultural impact of one of the most sought-after artists of our time, Banksy. One of the show’s producers, Brittany, was on hand to show off an original Banksy she and her partner, Britt (who is also with the visual art company LUMIO Studio), had purchased during their recent visit to Bethlehem, Palestine. They stayed at the Walled-Off Hotel, an independent visual arts hotel set up and financed by the artist. (The hotel is also a popular subject in his work). The artwork they purchased includes an original piece of brick from the wall and will be on display at the exhibition. “To me, Banksy is a hero. He’s someone I look up to. Obviously, no one knows who he is but he’s super selfless and everything he does is for someone else. My favorite piece, the M.V. Louise Michel, is an active French Navy war vessel that he bought and refitted as an emergency vehicle. It is actively sailing the Mediterranean, saving people’s lives to this day. He also has an organization that gives people a second chance in life,” Brittany shared. The boat’s mission is “to uphold maritime law and rescue anyone in peril without prejudice.” Host venue for the exhibit, The Morgan Arts Complex, is one of the newest art-focused venues in the Bridgeport neighborhood of Chicago with a mission of supporting culture and the arts within the celebrated south Chicago neighborhood, located at 3622 S. Because there is in London all that life can afford.” English composer William Boyce knew Mozart, who composed his first symphony in the city when he was only eight years old. Handel’s Water Music was composed for the “stage” of the River Thames. And Haydn wrote his Clock Symphony for a grand performance in the city’s main concert hall. All of these pieces will be included in Music of the Baroque’s “London Calling” concerts with Principal Guest Conductor (and London resident) Nicholas Kraemer. RIP Dolores Del Monte, Playboy Miss March 1954. She was one of the magazine's earliest Playmates.

For fans and friends of Playboy and Dolores Del Monte, this is sad news. Miss March 1954, one of the magazine’s oldest Playmates passed away on February 10 (a month shy of her 91st birthday!) surrounded by loved ones. She appeared in Issue No. 4 of Playboy

magazine and, in a story she shared with New York Magazine, Dolores said that she was an “aspiring actress from Spokane who agreed to do some ‘figure modeling’ for a calendar.” Somewhere between home and the photographer’s studio, she realized it probably meant sans clothing, but it was $50 for an hour of work, so she said all right. She was in relatively exclusive company, having followed Marilyn Monroe’s debut centerfold by only a few months, but Del Monte, who got

entitled “Radiant Beauty.” Del Monte began her modeling career in 1951 posing for the legendary photographer Bruno Bernard and the acclaimed pin-up painter Zoe Mozert. A year later Del Monte quit modeling. In 1954, her pin-up photo was offered to Playboy. Though Bruno Bernard shot it, the centerfold credited the John Baumgarth Company of Melrose Park, Illinois. When Del Monte received a letter asking permission to use her likeness she assumed Playboy was a standard pin-up magazine, and the images requested were from a shoot she recalled where she wore a leopard pattern bathing suit. As long as I knew her, she was always proud of her Playboy background and appeared at many Glamourcons (fan conventions) signing memorabilia and sharing tales of her past association with Hefner and Playboy. We will miss you dear Dolores. (Note, Larry Armstrong, one of Dolores' longtime friends, tells me that she was the #3 Playmate as Marilyn Monroe was NOT considered a Playmate but rather "Sweetheart of the Month.")
