The Chicago Lighthouse's greatly anticipated FLAIR fashion show on October 16 was a virtual delight. It literally took a village, albeit a very socially distanced one, to bring this important mission and vision to life. Designers and retailers showcased their looks in pre-taped segments that went

off without a hitch! This is all thanks to the talent and skills of my event co-host and show producer, Tracey DiBuono and her ZZAZZ Productions team, along with Kevin Sullivan and Francisco Perez. Huge kudos to Sheree Valukas and Sherrill Bodine who have expertly co-chaired this show for the past 4 years! The event's fashion segments were filmed at Tufano's Vernon Park Tap (1073 W. Vernon Park) with an edgy, cool urban backdrop (and filmed all in ONE day)! Male models

strutted down the middle of Vernon Park Place as a drone caught their moves from above. Models Sheree Valukas, Elyse Leavy, The Lighthouse's Lindsay Inglis and Elizabeth Mairs even climbed onto the roof (wearing designs by RedE) for dramatic shots from that angle. The creativity was truly off the charts. The scenes were all

the hallways of this haven of hope and it was so powerful to see. Dr. Janet Szlyk (Chicago Lighthouse president/CEO) spoke about the organization and how, over the past year, The Lighthouse "has come together to succeed during this tough time and shine like the beacon that we are." She talked about the org's employment services and job training programs and spotlighted staff members Kalari Girtley Jackson, Carly Englander and Jessica Smith, who are thriving in various positions within the organization. Kalari debuted the OrCam MyEye Pro, an amazing piece of technology that empowers people who are blind, enabling them to discern

Dr. Janet introduced Gaelynn Lea, a dynamic advocate for the disabled community who was born with a genetic condition that causes complications in the development of bones and limbs. She sang an original song (she also plays the violin) and is a past winner of the NPR Tiny Desk Contest. Event coordinator/friend Kevin Sullivan zoomed in from Marchesa where a fabulous Watch Party was being attended by about 34 guests. Dr. Sandy Goldberg and her supportive husband Greg Hines during the virtual event.

Even though it had to be virtual, Dr. Sandy Goldberg and her talented team figured out a way to make this year's (16th!) A Sterling Event benefiting A Silver Lining Foundation something very, very memorable just like she's always done in the past at her live events. Auctioneer Jim Miller opened the 90 minute show by introducing longtime supporter and WGN anchor Micah Materre who was shown in her kitchen busily creating the event's signature cocktail, a

(Just love him and the love they have together). I was honored to share a video tribute for this amazing nonprofit along with ABC-7's Tracy Butler, NBC Chicago's LeeAnn Trotter and Cancer Wellness magazine founder Caylei Vogelzang, among others. Tracy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and heard Dr. Sandy on the radio providing much needed inspiration and hope. LeeAnn lost her mom to breast cancer at an early age. Later

has evolved from a single outreach program connecting those in need of breast health resources to a funder of potentially life- saving breast health testing. In 2019, ASLF funded almost 2000 tests for 1487 women, resulting in 18 life-saving diagnoses. The organization has 15 partner hospitals in the Chicagoland area. All event proceeds will support the programs of the foundation, in particular, Buy A Mom A Mammogram, which funds cost-free breast health testing for uninsured, underinsured, undocumented women and men and for those who have lost their jobs and health insurance due to the pandemic. The Luminarts Cultural Foundation hosted a successful virtual event on October 10. "Next Begins Now," was a fundraiser to support our city's outstanding emerging artists so that they can pursue careers in the arts. Throughout the evening, we heard outstanding performances in a variety of genres. Katya Schloeman, a Luminarts Fellow in Dance 2017, performed a stirring ballet. She is a former company member of The Joffrey Academy of Dance. I was proud to introduce Josh Brown (via video of course), a 2019 Fellow in Classical Music, who performed on a 1679 Pietro Guarneri violin! According to stats, the greatest roadblock to first-gen success isn't a lack of talent or desire, but the lack of financial resources. Dollars raised from this event will be used to help remove that barrier. The evening celebrated student scholars who are the beneficiaries of 1stGEN Scholarships as

Robert's adoring wife Leslie threw a socially distanced DIY cast party to celebrate with cake and champagne and, of course stylish masks. The story, which stars Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer and Stanley Tucci, takes place in late 1967. A young orphaned boy goes to live with his loving grandma (Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his  grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks him away to a seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world's Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe — under cover — to carry out her nefarious plans. This year, a record-breaking 3,500 Chicagoans descended on Daley Plaza on August 8 to celebrate the Windy City in all its beauty with a staggering 30,000 people

making up the waitlist for this secret event! Each summer in more than 80 cities around the world, thousands of people dressed entirely in white meet up at a landmark public space with everything they need for an elegant soirée in tow, including folding tables 19.2019_DEBCHI_ElaineMiller_2529and chairs, gourmet picnic food, fine china, silverware and tablecloths. Over the course of the evening, guests eat and celebrate amid live music and dancing, many of them spending weeks in advance planning their lavish menus and striking ensembles. This year the event was hosted by Roger Hobby, James Wild, Lauren Haras and Brandy Koch. Here is Diner by the numbers–3,500 sparklers used, 2,040 bottles of wine and champagne enjoyed and 188 Diner en Blanc volunteers. Invitations for the event occur in 27.080819_DeB_Chicago_IL_ChrisDilts_1353three stages. Each invitation is for two people: Phase 1 is for members who attended the previous year’s event; Phase 2 is for new members who are sponsored by Phase 1

attendees; and Phase 3 is for guests who register on the waiting list. In keeping with Le Dîner en Blanc’s unique tradition, guests observe a few key rules: Once confirmed, guests’ participation is essential; The dress code is simple, elegant, white outfits and accessories; The table setting should be all white. This is a green event, so no disposables; Wine and/or Champagne permitted through pre-purchase from the official e-store; Beer and hard liquor is 7.2019_DEBCHI_ElaineMiller_0656prohibited; Non-alcoholic beverages welcome; The location is a secret. Michelle, Citi Bank and Sofitel serving as official national partners. The first Chicago event was held in August, 2012, in the South Gardens of the Art Institute of Chicago. 24.080819_DeB_Chicago_IL_ChrisDilts_1727 Since then, the hosts have sought out significant Chicago venues throughout the city that are underutilized or have previously not been 4.080819_DeB_Chicago_IL_ChrisDilts_0700available for a public or private event including IIT, Pioneer Plaza, the Lincoln Park Zoo Nature Boardwalk, Federal Plaza and Queen’s Landing along Chicago’s lakefront. In June 2018, Le Diner en Blanc de Paris marked its 30th anniversary. A record 17,000 guests from Paris and around the world gathered at the Esplanade des Invalides to celebrate this historic moment. Launched in Paris in 1988 by François Pasquier and a handful of friends, Le Dîner en Blanc has become a worldwide epicurean phenomenon. (For more info, click here!)

9The cockroaches have definitely left the building at the newly refurbished Chicago Tribune Tower, now Tribune Tower condos. With a top asking price of $7.6 million, these beautiful condos have it all–outdoor terraces surrounded by Gothic finials with dramatic, drop-dead soaring architectural details and so much Unt7itled more. In a recent Crain's story, Lee Golub, principal of Chicago-based Golub & Co, spoke about the redevelopment project. "This iconic building is in a setting you can’t get anywhere else in the city." Crain's also reported that the developers bought the low-rise, eastern portion of the complex for $240 million. Inside, the condo finishes include Untitled8-foot doors, white oak flooring, quartzite kitchen island tops and more for the building's 162 units. Prices range from the $700,000s to $7.6 million, At the lower end, in the $700,000s, buyers will get a one-bedroom with roughly 1,100 square feet and a balcony. In the Unt9itled castle-like top of the Tribune’s former tower, seven floors will contain five condominiums—two-story units at bottom and top, with three single-story units in between. Three single-level condos are about 1,420 square feet each. For $7.5 million, a buyer would get a 24th-floor space that encompasses much of what was the baronial office of Col. Robert McCormick, the owner and publisher of the Chicago Tribune from the 1920s through 1955. First move-ins for the building are planned for the end of 2020.  (Read entire Crain's story here)

I had the pleasure of interviewing the handlers of these amazing animals when I co-hosted a show on WCIU and I was blown away. They tip-toed into the studio wearing little rubber doll shoes. I was told this was so they wouldn't create too much noise in the hospitals and places where they visited. And, instead of the usual guest book, Lauren displayed a hand-painted gown that she created for guests to sign, of course! The love these two share is contagious–they are true soulmates and helpmates and, for as long as I've known them, they have always been THE perfect pair! Love and congrats to these two and may this be the beginning of a lifetime of good health and happiness!

was a nod to both James Bond and Richard's 77th birthday. It was the largest in the event's long history with over 1,100 of his closest friends in attendance. We love any excuse to travel to Lake Geneva in the summer and this is a really good one. Our long weekend started off at a friend's beautiful

lake house where we met up with several friends including Linda Yu (host with her Stuart), Sylvia Perez, Frances Renk, Andrea and Dr. Steve Stryker, Peach Carr, Nora Dunn, Alison Ruble, among others. The "mother" of all parties began with a unique invitation that included details printed on silvered metal with an image of Richard posing as James Bond between Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and others, enclosed with a black leather kit (marked "Top Secret-For Your Eyes

The invitation box also included a very real-looking passport with Richard's photo and info as a "Special Agent."This sort of attention to detail is a hallmark of every Driehaus party and it's a thrill to behold. We drove up to the "estate on the lake" where valet parkers took guests'

top. Richard made his entrance in his usual dramatic fashion via a video that showed clips from past James Bond films with his image superimposed in several key scenes (see video here). During his opening remarks, he sat in an oversized red leather chair and began in story-telling fashion of how his father influenced his life. "One of the greatest gifts of time and aging is the perspective it gives on life. Danish philosopher Kierkegaard said this, 'Life can only be understood backwards but it must be

Richard's father was a successful mechanical engineer with 24 patents but he only received $1 per patent and wasn't able to afford a house that he desired. This inspired Richard to make sure he was in a better position to provide for his own family when the time came. With his voice breaking, he concluded, "I thank you dad, you inspired me with your aspiration. It was a life-changing gift. Thank you dad

for what you did." Diana Ross entered in grand fashion too (see video here) and opened her hour long set with "My World is Empty Without You Babe" and sang many

of her hits including "Stop! In the Name of Love", "Baby Love", "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" and many more. During "Reach Out and Touch", she asked the crowd to hold up their cell phones in flashlight mode. She made three gorgeous costume changes, one more exquisite than the next, wished Richard a happy birthday and then, poof, she was gone leaving everyone in a dreamlike state. Afterwards, Richard's family presented him with a huge birthday cake and then it was time for fireworks! On the lawn, more cocktails and desserts were served…..It was a party for the record books, as they all are. I'm sure Hefner was watching with envy.

Over 900 of Chicago’s wildlife enthusiasts and socialites came together at the John G. Shedd Aquarium on July 27 for the sold-out signature fundraising fête, BLU, to make a difference for the aquatic animals everywhere. Hosted by

Auxiliary Board member Ashley Poulter and Nate Boychuck.

Shedd Aquarium’s auxiliary board and co-chairs, Caroline Conese, Ronak Danak and Dana WaudFloberg, the event raised more than $330,000 to support Shedd’s ongoing sustainability, conservation and rescue efforts for aquatic wildlife around the globe and

for the animals that call Shedd home. This year’s theme, “Out of the BLU” focused heavily on helping guests keep litter out of our waterways and away from landfills and instead reallocate as much waste as possible generated throughout the evening with the help of the aquarium’s robust composting and recycling programs. VIP guests kicked off the event an hour early and had the aquarium to themselves, though many chose to spend their time at the private lounge, presented by

Streisand by Kathy

Streisand at the United Center (photo by Kathy Piccone).

By now, the whole world knows that Chicago designer Azeeza Khan has designed a wardrobe for Barbra Streisand's summer tour! Azeeza is no stranger to celeb dressing having had stars like Beyonce and Sarah Jessica Parker already wearing her designs but she seemed particularly excited about this big collaboration and no wonder! In a Tribune article by David Syrek,

Khan said she became acquainted with Streisand through a hook-up by a store manager at Barney's where Azeeza's line is exclusive. Babs had seen her designs there and, voila, here we are! Their meetings at Streisand’s California home resulted in the singer wearing a show-stopping black ruffled silk gown (now dubbed “The Barbara,” that will retail for $2995) designed by Khan as Streisand performed her classic song “The Way We Were” in London early last month. During her United Center gig, Babs acknowledged "Chicago designer Azeeza" from the stage. How cool is that?! Since those meetings, Khan has created about 30 pieces for the star for on and off the stage. You go girl!

were invited backstage, thanks to Ravinia's PR whiz Nick Pullia, for a meet-and-greet that included several popular media peeps like Brittney and Connie Payton, Dina Bair, Jeanne Sparrow, Melissa Forman, Sylvia Perez and Cheryl Burton. There were about 25 guests in the small green room and she chatted and took photos with each and every one–never once losing that beautiful smile on her face. (Read all about this exciting night here in the Chicago Tribune!) I've had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer before and she has always been incredibly nice and genuine–even as her star climbs ever higher, she will always be a our "hometown Jenny." Fly, fly FLY Miss Hudson! (Check out my past interview with Jennifer below when she was a cover star for Michigan Avenue Magazine!)

You know how much I love a good pop-up! Well, 29Rooms marked the first event at the iconic Chicago Board of Trade Building at 141 W. Jackson as re-imagined by creative venue agency, Skylight. Refinery29, the leading digital media and entertainment company for young women, unveiled

immersive new interactive experiences and collaborations in the space when its 29Rooms: Expand Your Reality Experience took over on opening night, July 17. The intrigue began outside as guests were instructed to wend their way up escalators and down hallways until reaching the unique space. As I stood at the top of the stairway, I couldn't wait to try all of the artistic experiences in this groundbreaking festival of culture, cause and creativity. The exhibit marks the company’s commitment to "supporting innovative creative talent and driving conversation,

inspiration and positive change." As the first stop of its five-city Expand Your Reality tour, Chicago’s curtain-raising event brought together a diverse group of both local and national, emerging and established creatives, influencers and collaborators. Seen on the scene were Tamron Hall (whose new show "The Tamron Hall

The opening night event debuted The Art Park, 29Rooms' new artist collective initiative which invited a local artist from each of the 2019 tour stops to transform a IMG_5859geometric playground into a canvas for creativity. Representing Chicago in the Art Park is installation-based artist Yvette Mayorga, who is known for her use of confection and industrial materials as a conceptual framework. Also new for the tour is The Traveling Billboard – a full scale billboard mural by locally-based artists, created in collaboration with artist O.J. Hays and the children of SocialWorks, an organization founded by Grammy-award-winning musician and humanitarian, Chance the Rapper, that empowers youth through arts, education and civic engagement.(Now through July 28) And while you're out there poppin' around, don't miss my favorite, Bixbee Imagnination Station at 915 W. Guests at this private meet-and-greet enjoyed a Q&A conducted by Fuller where she discussed, among many topics, how she got her start. (See video here).  She looked better than ever wearing one of my favorite designers, Shernett Swaby. (To see highlights of her long career, check out the video below!) She played the Hollywood Bowl following her Chicago appearance. SHE is EVERY WOMAN!

Share Your Soles (2)Fortunately, most of us never have to experience what it feels like to go without shoes. Did you know that globally, 300 million children are denied education for the simple reason that they  do not own a single pair of shoes OR that women and children who walk miles for clean water, risk illness and amputation from infections caused by living in unsanitary conditions? For 20 years, the Share Your Soles Foundation has responded to

this need by distributing shoes to people living in underdeveloped communities across the globe.

The nonprofit was founded by Mona Purdy in 1999 following a trip to Guatemala where she saw little kids applying tar to the soles of their feet because their families couldn't afford shoes. Please join us on Friday, August 23 when this deserving organization celebrates its 20th anniversary (of doing good) at a Masquerade Party at Carnivale. Event details here!  (And please check website here for information on how to donate shoes, you know we all have too many!)

1819_musicman_Social_1200x1200_NEWI am MAD about Marian!! The Music Man, running now at the Goodman Theatre (thru August 18) is a nostalgic look back at small town America and reminded me just how much I miss my own little town of Dupo, Illinois. I went in expecting Robert Preston and I came out with a deep appreciation of this hard working cast led by Geoff Packard as Harold Hill and expertly directed by Mary Zimmerman. The choreography, the songs, the staging all took us back to a kinder, gentler time and we loved every minute of it. And even though I knew the story, I still cried when the marching band appeared. You shouldn't miss it! For tickets, $25-$142, click here!

celebratory on more levels than one. Not only was it a BD celebration but we also toasted Donna for getting the nod to defend Harvey Weinstein in New York. Jury selection begins Sept. 9 and the trial is expected to last 4 to 6 weeks.
