FROM COUTURE TO CANINES: CHICAGO’S SOCIAL SCENE UNLEASHED

Well, friends, the dog days of summer officially tapped out and somehow, I blinked and missed the whole thing. One minute we were dreaming of patio brunches and beach days, and the next? Poof. Gone. I didn’t even make it to my beloved farm stands or farmers markets this year. And let’s not even talk about the vacation that didn’t happen. Ouch. But this is Chicago, we don’t just sit around pouting into our iced coffee. We find the sparkle. Case in point: the fabulous, over-the-top Service Club of Chicago “Day on the Terrace” fashion show/fundraiser. It’s so big now that co-chairs Jean Antoniou, Sharyl Mackey and Tracey DiBuono might have to swap out the Peninsula catwalk for the United Center (and I’m only half kidding). And don’t get me started on the PAWS Chicago Beach Party, where fur babies reign supreme, tails wag like there’s no tomorrow and the Offshore Rooftop becomes a little slice of puppy paradise. So, buckle up, we’re diving into all the moments, causes and celebrations that make Chicago a city like no other.

including its 360@CACC initiative in partnership with Chicago Animal Care & Control, the Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic and the Nan & Wayne Kocourek Medical Center, a 30,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing medical care for homeless pets. In addition to its Chicago programs, PAWS Chicago’s Disaster Relief Team responded to the recent catastrophic flash floods in the Texas Hill Country by partnering with Wings of Rescue, Concho Valley PAWS and Austin Pets Alive! to relocate dozens of pets previously housed in shelters overwhelmed by the disaster. More than just a festive summer soirée, PAWS Chicago’s Beach Party shined a spotlight on the city’s homeless pet population and the organization’s life-saving work. In 2024, PAWS served 23,842 homeless animals through spay/neuter surgeries, adoptions, fostering, medical care and community outreach programs.

supports other nonprofits in the city and this is how they do it. The Philanthropic Committee reviews grant requests from dozens of local area nonprofits annually. The committee then determines where the SC funds will make the biggest impact. Staffed entirely by volunteer members who vet every single grant,

the committee ensures the organizations are stable and viable before they receive the support requested. Once an organization is fully vetted and awarded a grant, cash payments are NOT directly distributed to the grantee. This is what makes them different and able to make a difference among many nonprofits instead of just one. Payment is then made directly to the vendor for the allocated item and then that item is delivered to the organization to fulfill that specific, requested need. So, even though the Service Club’s “Day on the Terrace” was a fashionista’s dream, it also made dreams come true for those less fortunate.

Foster brought her trademark charisma, comedic flair and powerhouse vocal delivery; O’Hara impressed with her soprano and refined presence. The program opened with George Gershwin’s overture to “Girl Crazy” and included selections like Jeanine Tesori’s “Great Adventure,” Stephen Sondheim’s “What More Do I Need?,” David Yazbek’s “Answer Me,” Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” and more. O’Hara charmed the audience with Kelli O’Hara’s “They Don’t Let You in the Opera (If You’re a Country Star)” while Foster offered a tender version of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.” The popular medley and their duets earned frequent standing ovations. The concert finale was a moving performance of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love,” featuring percussionist Wanye Williams, an alum of Reach Teach Play, on vibraphone, reinforcing the gala’s educational mission through music. Reach Teach Play scholars also performed earlier during cocktails and again during dinner in the Gala Tent, where Foster and O’Hara mingled warmly with guests and students alike before the evening concluded.

This collection includes, among other items: Bunny of the Year trophies, Playboy Bunny handbooks (how to do the Bunny dip!), a rule book for Playmates/ Bunnies living in the Chicago Playboy Mansion, my silver lamé Bunny of the Year costume, the invitation to Hef’s funeral in L.A., my union membership, a Playboy Covid-19 facemask with

my 1979 cover on it, a 1976 Playboy Bunny of the Year Pageant program, a large poster advertisement with my image on it for key club sales and hundreds of images. How did this all come about? museum exhibition. I can’t help but think Hef would be very proud, especially since it’s in Chicago where he
was born. When this exhibit finally opens, I hope it will be embraced with open arms—just as I was made to feel special by Hugh Hefner himself. He had a remarkable way of making the Bunnies and Playmates feel cherished—as if we were part of his grand vision, not just figures in a magazine. That feeling—a flash of pride, excitement and belonging—will stay with me always, with or without the physical items. What truly matters is that moment in time, forever etched in my heart. Luckily, we were able to make it back to Palm Beach and in a week, I already felt like I’d been away for a month. It’s a great feeling. It’s no wonder people in warmer climates tend to live longer. These days, coming from Chicago to Palm Beach is like slipping into another dimension-one that seems cleaner, free of crime, and then there’s the palm trees, of course. I’ve been coming down here with my Mom before I met Chuck. Miami Beach was our go-to spot. I always forced her out of her comfort zone and she loved it. I took her to

They stayed to hear "YMCA" (lol!) but left shortly afterwards. For the rest of our stay, we soaked up the sun and splashed in the pool. A truly life-affirming trip in every way. It's become our happy place.

“When one is tired of London,” said Samuel Johnson, “one is tired of life. Because there is in London all that life can afford.” English composer William Boyce knew Mozart, who composed his first symphony in the city when he was only eight years old. Handel’s Water Music was composed for the “stage” of the River Thames. And Haydn wrote his Clock Symphony for a grand performance in the city’s main concert hall. All of these pieces will be included in Music of the Baroque’s “London Calling” concerts with Principal Guest Conductor (and London resident) Nicholas Kraemer. For fans and friends of Playboy and Dolores Del Monte, this is sad news. Miss March 1954, one of the magazine’s oldest Playmates passed away on February 10 (a month shy of her 91st birthday!) surrounded by loved ones. She appeared in Issue No. 4 of Playboy

magazine and, in a story she shared with New York Magazine, Dolores said that she was an “aspiring actress from Spokane who agreed to do some ‘figure modeling’ for a calendar.” Somewhere between home and the photographer’s studio, she realized it probably meant sans clothing, but it was $50 for an hour of work, so she said all right. She was in relatively exclusive company, having followed Marilyn Monroe’s debut centerfold by only a few months, but Del Monte, who got

married and had three children not long after her nude pictures were taken, didn’t realize they had ended up in Playboy until her son pointed them out years later. The photo shown here was published by Champion Line and is

entitled “Radiant Beauty.” Del Monte began her modeling career in 1951 posing for the legendary photographer Bruno Bernard and the acclaimed pin-up painter Zoe Mozert. A year later Del Monte quit modeling. In 1954, her pin-up photo was offered to Playboy. Though Bruno Bernard shot it, the centerfold credited the John Baumgarth Company of Melrose Park, Illinois. When Del Monte received a letter asking permission to use her likeness she assumed Playboy was a standard pin-up magazine, and the images requested were from a shoot she recalled where she wore a leopard pattern bathing suit. As long as I knew her, she was always proud of her Playboy background and appeared at many Glamourcons (fan conventions) signing memorabilia and sharing tales of her past association with Hefner and Playboy. We will miss you dear Dolores. (Note, Larry Armstrong, one of Dolores' longtime friends, tells me that she was the #3 Playmate as Marilyn Monroe was NOT considered a Playmate but rather "Sweetheart of the Month.")

We survived COVID, we’re all here,” said Reed. The event also benefited the James Beard Foundation Foundation’s Scholarship Program, which assists aspiring and established culinary professionals. The room was decorated in grand, understated elegance with the florals, crystal, vases, chairs, bars and even the silver reflecting carpet leading to the ceremony, all matching the existing decor–brilliant! There were absolutely no mistakes, no missteps, nothing that didn't fit perfectly in that fantastical dreamscape. All of the wedding party was dressed in black and white, carrying long bouquets of white freesia. Even the couple's dachshunds wore outfits that matched the wedding party– black organza with brilliant, sparkling brooches on top. At the podium, the wedding party gathered round Derrick and Scott as they exchanged their vows. Finally, In the theme of New Year, New Me, she presented the idea of building a sort of personal 3 point strategic plan for yourself, which impressed many. Here are some other events I recommend that are coming soon! The Joffrey Ballet remounts Yuri Possokhov’s blockbuster Anna Karenina for the first time since its crowd-pleasing world premiere in 2019. Based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy, Possokhov’s immersive adaptation—winner of the 2019 “Oscars of Dance” Benois de la Danse International Prize for Best Choreography—features an original composition by award-winning composer Ilya Demutsky, costumes and sets by Emmy Award-winning designer Tom Pye, and lighting by famed designer David Finn. Hope Through Caring Gala will be Feb. 18.

The event also spotlighted Dr. Cathy Humikowski, a former patient of Dr. Baum and an ICU pediatrician at Lurie Children’s, who shared her thoughts on the important role that Ronald McDonald House has played for families in need 45 years ago, today and for the years ahead. Fred, from I HEART MEDIA, 103.5 KISS-FM’s “The Fred Show” and Leon Rogers from the WGCI Morning Show served as the evening’s emcees and Holly Buckendahl, RMHC-CNI’s CEO, and Jeff Cantalupo, RMHC-CNI’s Board Chair, took to the stage to share remarks about the impact the organization has on families in the Chicagoland community and thanked guests for their generosity and continued support. “The gala is our largest annual fundraising event that helps provide the care and resources needed for countless families with sick children around Chicagoland, Northwest Indiana and beyond,” says Holly Buckendahl, CEO, RMHC-CNI. “It was wonderful to all be together again in person for this special event and I’m thrilled that we raised over $1.3 million. More than 300 civic and corporate leaders from across the country came out to participate in the 22^nd annual Big Shoulders Fund Golf Classic. The event is Big Shoulders Fund’s largest annual fundraiser and, this year, raised over $830,000, for the Friends of Big Shoulders Scholarship Fund, which provides critical tuition assistance to nearly 400 students in Big Shoulders Fund’s network of Chicago schools annually. Hosted at the prestigious Olympia Fields Country Club, attendees took part in a series of golf contests – including a Hole-in-One and Closest to the Pin contests, raffles, live and silent auction, and more. It felt like home at Untitled Supper Club when Playboy hosted an event in collab with Sip Spirits (RARE HARE) to announce their new product release, a rare whiskey named "1953 Anniversary Edition, so named for the first printing of Playboy mag with the iconic Marilyn cover. The spirit is rare because only 1953 bottles were produced. I was proud to host this event! (Thank you Toula Georgakopoulos!) What a great night! PAWS Chicago's Fur Ball, one of the city's largest pet-friendly fundraisers, will return on Friday, November 1, at The Drake Hotel. The River North Fall Gallery Walk, presented by Daniel Kinkade Fine Art, is back on September 9. The walk will be comprised of 21 locations with special events throughout River North, featuring 31 artists and 20 designer vignettes. The Gallery Walk’s philanthropic partner is St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, which will receive a portion of proceeds. The walk is free and open to the public except for opening night parties which are ticketed. The Kick-Off party will be held at Altalia Furniture Sept. 9, 410 W. Grand (5-8 pm) and the After-Party, Sept. 9, will be held at Architectural Artifacts, 1065 N. Orleans, 8-10 pm. Showrooms will have extended hours day of and will offer food and libations. On Thursday, September 29, The National Multiple Sclerosis Society will host its annual Dinner of Champions at the Four Seasons. The event will honor its chair, Justine Fedak and raise funds to support research for a cure, advocacy, programs and services. (All details here!)

Well, now I've caught you up to date! Whew. I hope your eyeballs aren't bleeding. I know it's a lot but, as I mentioned, the social scene is busier than I've ever seen it. People are excited to see each other and support their favorite charities again and so am I. I've been writing this blog now for over 12 years and, granted, I'm not as regular as I'd like to be but I'm not going anywhere, so please subscribe here.
