The City of Big Shoulders had busy feet visiting the many fundraisers, cocktail parties, soirees, get-togethers, galas, launches, previews, openings, meet-and-greets, luncheons, dinners,
events, fests and weddings that took place this year. There were so many moments that will never be forgotten with friends that I hope to spend more time with in 2011. I loved celebrating the wedding of Chef Art Smith and Jesus Salguiero in Washington, D.C. as well as Caitlin Saville and Brendan Collins’ beautiful wedding in Lake Forest. Steve Starr’s book launch
parties were fun and brought out his many friends. Bunky Cushing’s functions always brought out a glam crowd for good
causes and Greg Hyder’s Man of Vision Award benefitting the Midwest Eye-Banks was a blast. I loved doing the skit with Hazel Barr to introduce him. Our trip to St. Tropez, Paris and Monte Carlo has always been one of our favorites. This year was made even better with the addition of Paul Iacono
along with long-time friends Anita and Ken Brown, Tissy Eggleston and John Kennington. We also met some remarkable new friends who happened to be from Chicago – Chris Draska, Matt Unertl, Mike Manning and Mark Bell. To experience this type of beauty and excitement in a foreign country with amazing friends
creates a life-long bond that is unbreakable. I loved seeing Hef back in town for the screening of his documentary and was even more delighted when, shortly after, he announced his engagement to long- time love Crystal Harris. PR maven Dionne Williams amped up my excitement for the year when she asked
me to help deliver toys to kids with Jennifer Hudson at Navy Pier. Our trip to LA for New Year’s 2010 was thrilling and spending it at Playboy Mansion West for
Hef’s annual party made it perfect. Another highlight was meeting actor Jack Black at the Polo Lounge and staying at the ever-elegant Beverly Hills Hotel.
I loved celebrating so many birthdays throughout the year and feel so blessed to have such wonderful friends. The party for Jan Flanagan at RL included actor Alan Cumming…not an invitee but very willing to take pics with us. I celebrated bdays with Cindy Burns, Kristina McGrath, Mary Pat
Burns, Helen Melchior, Leslie Hindman, Sheila O’Grady, Sharyl Mackey, David Herro and so many others. We took a wonderful trip to South Beach where we spent a delightfully long lunch with Palmer House’s David Brandt at La Piaggia,
one of our favorite beach clubs. Our annual trip to New York for the Book Fair is always enlightening and makes me appreciate our collection more and more every year. Our favorite restaurant, Swifty’s, is thankfully still alive and well. I was honored to be a co-chair for Common Threads’ World Festival and am looking forward to
March 7, 2011 when it will be even bigger and better! I was thrilled to chair Macy’s Glamorama benefitting Ronald McDonald House Charities and will be helping out again in 2011. I was honored to be included in TCW as a “Style Trendsetter,” in Shore Magazine as a “Fashion Icon” and in ME: In Focus Magazine as an
“Influencer.” I am also grateful to Chicago magazine, which recently celebrated its 40th anniversary, for honoring me with a feature entitled “Belle of the Blog” written by one of my favorite writers,
Lucinda Hahn. The Joffrey Ballet continues to amaze everyone with their performances, galas and fun fundraisers. The beautiful and talented dancers break your heart every time you
see them on or off the stage. I felt privileged to be at the groundbreaking ceremony for the World’s Largest Ronald McDonald House and am looking forward to being a part of the founding Auxiliary
Board with its super dynamic women. And last but not least, I thank all of you for taking the time to read Candid Candace. It is a labor of love for me and I hope to make it bigger and better in the year to come. These are just a very few of my highlights for 2010; I hope last year was equally special for you and I am hoping that 2011 will bring you even bigger and better memories! Congratulations are in order for some of my favorite people and places around town. NoMI at the Park Hyatt was named “Restaurant of the Year”
by Pat Bruno of the Sun-Times. This is the only restaurant he awarded four stars to for the entire year! Chef Ryan LaRoche must be thrilled along with his wonderful team especially after just winning a Michelin star, too!
Congrats also to Park Hyatt’s Lynne Bredfeldt, PR person nonpareil! The Peninsula is also garnering awards left and right. Its latest honor for “#1 Hotel Restaurant” was awarded by Zagat for their lobby restaurant. And, last but not least, huge kudos to my favorite friend/makeup artist Nicole Jacob on yet another magazine honor: Allure has listed her as the go-to girl in Chicago for makeup from the Paul Rehder Salon. This is her third major magazine recommendation having appeared in Allure last month for being the best brow expert as well as in W as the “one to watch.” We love you, Nicole!
Woman-about-town/singer and philanthropist Shelley MacArthur Farley has a CD!! “With Love, Shelley” will be performed on Valentine’s Day (Monday, February 14th) on the stage of the Pritzker Pavilion in
Millennium Park at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are only $15 and can be purchased by calling 312-742-8497. Her disc and performance will include love-themed songs by such composers as Gershwin, Bacharach, Sondheim, Cy Coleman and Jimmy McHugh. One of my favorite caterers, George Jewell, celebrated his big 7-0 in grand style in exotic Curacao recently with friends. These photos are courtesy of George’s friend and mine, Ken Norgan. Ken has been a very busy man himself lately – travelling to his home country, Sweden, where he is close friends
with the Royal Family (of course) and also to Australia for his yearly holiday visit with long time family friends. As you can see from his photos, it is a lovely country. Happy Birthday, George…I hope I will still be writing about your birthday trips when we are both 100! 🙂 To see some beautiful pics, please click HERE!
There were so many clever, heartfelt and creative Christmas cards this year. Check out some of my favorite ones HERE and thanks to everyone for sending them to us!!!
Well, that’s all for my first blog of 2011…and it feels GREAT!!! Hope you’re all off to a great start in this New Year! Now check out this link to make you smile. There is nothing cuter than British humor, especially when it includes animals!

P.S. Congrats and thank you to CS Magazine and Amalie Drury for including me in their “Socialite Spotlight” in Datebook this month as a representative of Macy’s Glamorama benefitting Ronald McDonald House Charities! I was honored to be included with so many hard working and dynamic women!!

Do i really have the sense of mourning the loss of my youth and confusing about my future?
