Director/writer/actor Woody Allen made a rare Chicago appearance at the premiere of his latest film, "Cafe Society," hosted by Metropolitan Capital at the Chicago History Museum on July 21. It was the second time I had the honor of interviewing Woody and he
was even nicer than the first time when he was here on July 29, 2015, for the premiere of his film "Irrational Man." Sightings of Allen are rarer than hen's teeth in Chicago so I knew full well how lucky I was to speak with him again. I'm guessing that, due to his relationship with Chicago
venture capitalist Ron L. Chez, he enjoys making stops in Chicago–lucky us! Chez has a contract to finance four of Allen's films and this is their third collaboration. Woody ambled onto the
red carpet with such a low profile that, when I finally looked up after interviewing Chez, there he was, wisely dressed in khakis and a white shirt due to our recent heat wave with his adoring wife Soon-Yi right behind him, as always. (They have been married for 19 years). Waiters holding trays of wine and sparkling water greeted
guests. Light hors d'oeuvres were passed as the press gathered on the red carpet awaiting the genius writer/director/actor. Sunlight flooded the massive room that featured several film posters, all signed by Allen! If I could've fit one
in my purse, I would have. Besides Woody, red carpet guests included Chez and Michael Rose, the chairman/CEO of
Metropolitan Capital Bancorp. Chez is quite a character with a personality as big as all outdoors. His philanthropic work is almost as impressive as his film collaborations. He usually has a cameo in Allen's films, but was cut out of this one after spending hours dressing in vintage clothes. He called it, "indicative of his (Woody's) failure as a director." It's clear, he and Allen have a mutual admiration and
respect for one another and love playing pranks. In the following clip, Woody talks about his favorite part of making this film (his 47th), where he would shoot in Chicago, what he thinks about Scarlett Johansson and more. The movie, starring Jesse Eisenberg (who channels Woody to perfection) and Kristin Stewart, is poignant, beautifully filmed by Vittorio Storaro and made me nostalgic for days gone by. Chicago Helicopter Experience (CHE) invited 400 notables to its first, after-hours event, “HeliNights”, for the reveal of the latest addition to its fleet – an Airbus H130 series aircraft. With this acquisition, CHE becomes the first helicopter tour provider in Chicago to incorporate the world class Airbus Helicopters into its fleet. “We were extremely
excited to have so many of our friends and supporters on hand as we received our first H130 from Airbus”, said Trevor Heffernan, founder/CEO of CHE. “With this new helicopter, we are
looking forward to more passengers from all over the world flying with Chicago Helicopter Experience to discover the very best vantage point of our beautiful city of Chicago.” In addition to the reveal, attendees were invited
to not only explore the heliport, and a luxury yacht, but to tour the City as well – some 100 stories high! Upon arrival, guests checked in for their flights – everyone was welcomed to take a tour of the
city via chopper! Partygoers were served cocktail fare by DineAmic group and Russian Standard Vodka & Rocky’s Ginger Beer came together for Cocktail Couriers to serve kegs of Moscow
mules. Don Julio was on hand for guests to sample their line of premium tequilas. So let's just say, the drinks were flowing! And for even more LUXE transportation excitement, COAST docked a
luxury yacht at the heliport for guests to savor the sunset sipping cocktails. A DJ from Music Trust threw down dance beats and Signature Transportation provided trolleys and buses to the after-party hosted by Public House. The
heliport is located at 2420 S. Halsted and, if you haven't been, it's a must-do!
It was a celebration, both for Chef Art Smith's new Blue Door Kitchen & Garden and for Common Threads, his 13 year-old non-profit that educates kids on making better food choices. The private luncheon was held in
the beautifully appointed upstairs dining room for longtime supporters of the organization as a way to introduce them to the new farm-to-table restaurant concept and to applaud the success of Common Threads.
Let's talk about the restaurant first. Three letters-O.M.G. I loved the old Table 52, but I ADORE this chic, retooled spot at 52 W. Elm! The decor is still comfortably elegant but now the main room downstairs is painted a lovely French blue with white marble-topped tables dotting the space. My favorite part is the new bar which is
now situated along the east side of the restaurant, instead of in the rear and obscuring the kitchen. It's the first thing you see upon entering and it makes the room seem much larger. The blue and white porcelain
dinnerware by Ralph Lauren is gorgeous too! The outdoor space is ultra charming with rattan seating and flowers everywhere! At night, the space must be enchanting since I saw three wrought iron,
electrified chandeliers. The only critique I have is that they need umbrellas as the tables get pretty hot in the afternoon sun. And now for the food! Our luncheon menu was TOO good–to the point that I won't be able to
eat for weeks (or at least I shouldn't). For starters, we were served pimento stuffed dates and olives and Little Farm on the Prairie deviled eggs. There were three salad choices: A cherry
fennel salad that included ricotta, candied ginger, granola and orange balsamic vinaigrette; a Brussells and kale salad with toasted almonds, parmesan, bacon and maple tahini vinaigrette and a BDK Power Grain salad with high protein grains, dried fruit, hazelnuts and pickled carrots. And then, a crowd favorite–buttermilk fried chicken with
braised greens, hot sauce and honey! As if this weren't enough, add delicious shrimp and grits (white corn grits, tasso ham, tomato stew and crispy okra) and Cece's Three Cheese Mac & Cheese with orecchiette. Dessert on the patio consisted of Art's famous Hummingbird cake
and some chocolate raspberry decadence. And even though the food was delicious, the highlight of the afternoon was the latest, exciting news about Common Threads! The organization is now in NINE cities and will serve over 70,000 kids by the end of the summer! Chef Art shared the story of how the
organization was founded in 2003 with just a few kids in an old church. He gave huge (and much deserved) props to his beautiful founding CEO, Linda Novick O'Keefe. I'm proud to say I was an early supporter and will never forget my experience cooking with the kids. When they put their little chefs' hats on, they all stood a little taller and I did too. They were in their happy place where no violence or fear existed, only the sheer pleasure of learning a much needed skill and being
with friends of every race and color. It was something I will never forget. God bless Art, Jesus and Linda for recognizing this need and following it through to the exciting (and ongoing) success we learned about last week. The group of supporters (about 25) included Linda Johnson Rice, Shawn Donnelley, Margaret and Bob Rainone, Michelle Boone, Latrice Davis, Lakesha Rose, Lynne Bredfeldt, Susan Ellefson and many more. Congrats to Chef Art, Jesus and Linda on all the good you do! Please keep up the
great work, both in the kitchen and in our communities!
The fifth annual Ashore Thing presented by BMO Harris Bank and hosted by Michigan Avenue Magazine was held on Saturday, July 23. The festivities celebrated the start of the
108th Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust at the East end of Navy Pier. The event made another splash in its 5th year lapping the lake with front-row views of the prestigious sailing race. A tropical-chic environment was created for sun-seeking Chicagoans by Kehoe Designs as well as a more modern aesthetic designed by Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams in the sponsor pavilion. Multiple
interactive retail pop-ups, displays and activities entertained guests including Kaehler Luggage, jewelry by Kendra Scott and fashions by L.K. Bennett, all from 900 North Michigan Shops. Abt Electronics offered
the latest in tech devices for guests to play with. Sport and adventure-seekers interacted with the Chicago Yacht Club and Chicago Helicopter Experience as well as previewed
the latest car collections from Bob Loquercio Auto Group. Music by Duplex Entertainment set the tone for the perfect backdrop and a stunning lakeside afternoon while a Mariachi band by
Mercadito surprised and delighted attendees. The young and the young at heart enjoyed lawn games by the Lofts at River East and the CBS 2 mobile weather lab. Ashore Thing’s “Junior Sailor” area was chock full of nautical
themed fun including sailboat and sailor hat decorating, face painters, a balloon artist and other activities including a coloring mural. Guests included Michigan Avenue president Dan Uslan, editor-in-chief J.P. Anderson, Seattle Seahawks' J'Marcus Web, Jennifer Sutton Brieva, the Landan twins, Paul Iacono, Peter Chi Au and
more sipped on cooling beverages by the water’s edge and in a custom cigar lounge. Festivities continued at the Official After-Party immediately following the event at La Mez Agave Lounge.
We've never had the chance to experience the Brookfield Zoo except for gala events so when we were offered the opportunity for a behind-the-scenes tour, we jumped at the chance! Senior
VP of Operations and longtime friend, Rich Gamble, conducted the tour himself for Chuck, me, David Lawlor (a tech/computer genius) with his darling kids Elizabeth and Xander (a Tae Kwon do champ). As he drove us throughout some of the zoo's
216 acres (!!!), we learned a lot about animal conservation, the zoo's community outreach programs and all the exciting plans and events coming to this world-renowned zoo (that, by the way, is the only zoo in the world to receive accreditation from the Humane
Society!) We had a surreal up-close-and-personal encounter with one of the zoo's six beautiful giraffes. We fed them kale leaves while an in-house photog snapped away. It was a joy to stare into those limpid brown eyes and realize God's beauty. From there, we visited Hamill Family Wild Animal Encounters where we petted an emu, fed baby goats and parakeets and enjoyed the peahens roaming freely throughout the
grounds. The space is exquisitely landscaped and over 20 weddings are held there annually, no surprise there! A surprise, private (elegant) dinner was planned for us inside one of the animal pavilions that took our breath away. It was an
experience we will never forget and, if you've never been or haven't been in a while, it's most definitely worth a return trip. We have to go back for the Festival of Flight (where a variety of birds from around the world demonstrate free-flight natural behavior), Summer Nights (a concert series) and ZooBrew, a VIP beer garden presented by Brickstone coming Friday, August 26/27. It's
like Disneyland for animal lovers! Thanks to Rich and Melody Laviste for a MOST memorable day!
More than 500 guests attended the Chicago UNCF (United Negro College Fund)'s “A Mind Is…Gala" at the Hyatt Regency Hotel. Hosted by Mike and Kristina McGrath, the event
raised over $500,000 to provide Illinois students with the necessary resources to get to and through college. ABC-7's Terrell Brown served as emcee. Hundreds of business, civic and education leaders including Dr. Michael L. Lomax, UNCF’s president and CEO, came together for this signature black-tie event. "A college education, which
was a good-to-have, is now a must-have, a virtual requirement for jobs and careers that support families and communities,” said Lomax. “Last year alone, UNCF awarded almost $4 million and offered 267 scholarships to Illinois students, continuing our efforts to equip the next generation with the
tools to be successful—ensuring a better world for us all.” This year’s event honored several leaders who have had a positive impact on the Illinois community. The Harold H. Hines, Jr.
Benefactor’s Award was given to BMO Harris Bank, accepted by David Casper, president and CEO of the bank. The “A Mind Is” Award for dedication to and support of UNCF’s work was given to Deirdre C. Drake, senior vice president, U.S. Cellular; Gary and Denise Gardner of the Gary and Denise Gardner Family Foundation; Quintin E. Primo, III,
chairman and CEO, Capri Investment Group; Diane Primo, founder and chairman, Intralink Global; Louis Carr, president media sales, BET; and Diane Dinkins Carr, president, DDC Consulting Group. The event was chaired
by Tyronne Stoudemire, vice president of global diversity and inclusion for Hyatt Corp. “At the Hyatt Corporation, we care about our communities and thus are unwavering in our commitment to investing in better futures,” said Stoudemire. “It was a pleasure to partner with UNCF allowing us to provide the resources for the
next generation to be the best version of themselves.” The crowd was treated to a night filled with electrifying entertainment including three-time Grammy-nominated recording artist Angie Stone. Additional entertainment was provided by hometown songstress Terisa Griffin, pianists Ashton and Ryan Clark and Elizabeth Norman-Sojourner. The event featured a VIP reception hosted by darling LeeAnn Trotter, entertainment reporter at NBC 5; a live
auction; student testimonials and elegant dinner and dancing. Congrats to ALL!
Congrats to Chicago's own Laura Schwartz
who's busy as a bee these days! She just returned from covering the RNC AND the DNC but not before stopping in Burbank where she "filled the suspenders" of Larry King for two episodes of his Emmy Award-winning show Politicking on Ora.tv! Catch her two episodes here and here! Keep up the GREAT work Laura! How thrilling is this?!
Chicago in White returns for its 6th annual celebration on Saturday, August 6th. With a projected 2,000 person guest list, this year is panning out to be the largest gathering since launching in 2011! Chicago in White is inspired by the 1893 “City Beautiful” movement, designed to bring the city together in appreciation of its incredible aesthetic and design.
Every year, Chicago in White finds a location to stage its pop-up picnic style dinner party—providing all tables, chairs and entertainment. This year’s secret location will be announced via email to all ticket holders the morning of the event. Guests then pack their picnic
baskets, don their all white attire, and head to Chicago in White’s outdoor location to begin an evening of breaking bread with old and new friends. There will also be two types of ticket options this year—$35 for General Admission and $150 for tickets to the VIP Chloe Wine Collection Experience which will
include a delicious meal and wine pairing for two! Menu and pairing details, along with ticket info, are available here. (For a 15% discount, mention "Candace" 🙂 Guests will be given the opportunity to pre-order their wine from the collection, sample/purchase wine on-site, and compete in the #ChloeInWhite Best Dressed Contest. Woo Hoo!
I had a wonderful "friends get-together" at Chef Tony Priolo's new restaurant Nonnina's (340 N. Clark) recently. Piccolo Sogno Due reinvented itself as a more casual Nonnina and this is how Chef Priolo described it. "This restaurant is influenced by our grandmothers,
all four of them." Principals include Priolo, co-owner Ciro Longobardo, Chris Macchia (Pizza Barra, Coco Pazzo) who will serve as executive
chef/partner and Riccardo Brizuela, a partner/grandson/former Due manager who will oversee the front of house. I didn't notice an immediate difference in decor as I always liked it the way it was. It's still charming and cozy and in a great location. We tried a little of everything, the Chicken
Parmigiana, Meatballs alla Nonnina, Pasta Fra Diavolo with shrimp and more. A stand-out appetizer was the roasted cauliflower! OMG. Anyway, Chef Priolo has another run away hit on his hands and I can't wait to go back!
On Saturday, July 16, Creativity United presented the "We Dream in Color" annual Humanitarian Celebration at the DuSable Museum. The event attracted nearly 300 guests and honored a number of local notables in many different categories. Founder Quinton de' Alexander said, "This night is in
honor of those people who help others enhance their lives, are survivors of challenging experiences and who spread positivity. It's a night that celebrates life!" I was thrilled and honored to be the
"Oprah Winfrey Entrepreneur Humanitarian" recipient along with Rev. Dr. Harold E. Bailey (who received the "Nelson Mandela Freedom" award), Nicole Brown (who received the "Serena Williams Inspiration" award), Brittany Gallareneau, Alyssa and
Jessica Amanti (who received the "Young Leaders of Tomorrow" award) and Cynda Williams (who received the "Minnie Riperton Humanitarian" honor) among others. Among the
many stunning live performances that night, a stand-out was Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Alvin Garrett, who sang this amazing song, "By Myself." (Listen here!) (We bought the CD, of course!) Congrats to ALL the honorees! It was a night I'll never forget. (To see/hear my acceptance speech, see below. For once, I was speechless).
Congrats to Chicago's very own chanteuse, Diva Lynne Jordan! Boy, has this lady been busy! First, her opera in FRANCE, then her sold-out Nina Simone Show in Atlanta and then a "sublime experience" with Ukranian star Oleg Skypka at City Winery. Lynne's awesome band
backed him up and learned all his material. She even did a duet with Oleg in Ukranian! And, as if this isn't enough, she just finished writing her one-woman show!! Whew, I'm tired just writing about this
dynamic and multi-talented star! Much love and luck to you Lynne!
And speaking of chanteuses, another popular Chicagoan, Shelley MacArthur (Farley), will be performing an evening of song, "Mainely Magical," on Wednesday, August 24, at the Vinegar Hill Music Theatre, the new state-of-the-art entertainment venue at 53 Old Post Road
in Arundel, Maine. Tickets are $45-$55 and can be purchased by calling 207.985.5552 or by clicking here. Congrats and break a leg Shelley!
Newly retired NFL cornerback Charles Tillman hosted his 4th annual Charles Tillman Celebrity Pro BOWLer Tournament on July 14 at Kings Bowl Lincoln Park. The event, which featured an evening of bowling, delicious food and festivities, raised
more than $44,000 for the Charles Tillman Cornerstone Foundation that works to improve the lives of critically and chronically ill children. Celebrity guests in attendance included former Chicago Bears Charles Tillman, Anthony Adams, Jerry Azumah, Rashied Davis, Johnny Knox and Jason McKie; New York Giants rookie
Marshaun Coprich; former San Francisco 49er Darius Fleming; current Baltimore Raven Kapron Lewis-Moore; Miss Illinois 2016 Zena Malak; current Cleveland Brown Robert Griffin
III (RG3); current New Orleans Saint Roman Harper; current Tennessee Titan Nate Palmer; Jarrett Payton and current Chicago
Sky players Cappie Pondexter and Tamera Young. The Greyfield Legacies team, led by Anthony Adams, won the tournament! All guests enjoyed samplings of signature dishes from Kings’ made-from-scratch menu including assorted gourmet pizzas, shiitake mushroom spring rolls,
sesame ginger chicken lollipops, steak tips and fried mac and cheese bites. Yummy! First held in 2012 at Kings’ Rosemont location, the Charles Tillman Celebrity Pro BOWLer Tournament has attracted hundreds and raised more than
$475,000 in support of the Charles Tillman Cornerstone Foundation. (Photos courtesy of Sonya Martin and Kings Bowl)
Chuck and I were so thrilled to attend the 75th birthday celebration of Baton Show Lounge owner/founder Jim Flint at the Park West on July 25. The room was filled with longtime friends, family and past and present
entertainers. The Baton brings the "best of the best" female impersonators, and now male performers too, to the Chicago location at 736 N. Clark and around the world. Jim was one raw nerve as speaker after speaker spoke about how they met him, loved him and admired his philanthropic endeavors
especially on behalf of the LGBTQ communities. Case in point, Jim requested that all donations and monies raised from his party benefit the Orlando Pulse Employees Recovery Fund. Mimi Marks, who has won every award and honor as the top entertainer in her field, made a surprise appearance much to the delight of her fans. She recently left the Baton
after a long collaboration to pursue other interests but she looked better than ever. She told me she had been performing at Pulse only a week before the horrible
massacre. It makes me believe we're all in God's hands for sure. In any case, it was a love-fest as performer after performer strutted their stuff on the stage. Another popular entertainer and former Mr. Continental, Angel Saez, had people lining up to tip him for his sexy moves. Take a look at the two videos I posted: one of Mimi's performance here and this one of Angel's here! Hot Stuff! Congrats to all and happy birthday Jim! I hope we're there for your 100th!
The H Foundation’s 16th Annual Goombay Bash smashed fundraising goals and raised $638,705 to benefit Basic Science Cancer Research at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University! The renowned Caribbean-themed
“un-gala” was hosted by CBS 2 Chicago sports anchor Ryan Baker and drew over 1,000 people to Navy Pier’s Grand Ballroom on July 16. "It was a record-breaking year for the Goombay Bash. We are
well on our way to exceeding our 2015 year-end fundraising total of $708,000,” said newly hired Executive Director Courtney Frahm. “In 16 years, we have raised over $7 million dollars to help find a cure for cancer.” Event highlights included appearances by George Wendt (“Norm” from the hit show Cheers) and
the beloved 1985 Chicago Bears Super Bowl Champions; Dan Hampton (#99), Jay Hilgenberg (#63), and Steve McMichael (#76). Dressed in Hawaiian shirts and leis, guests enjoyed the casual Caribbean-style event featuring 200+ silent auction packages, a live
drawing for a $10,000 raffle prize, the Goombay Smash signature cocktail, a gourmet buffet and a live auction. The evening ended with a fireworks finale. “At the H Foundation, we always say that cancer is personal,” said John Rot, H Foundation executive board president.
“The harsh reality is that while we were at the Goombay Bash raising money for cancer research, almost 2,000 people have lost their battle with cancer,” said Leonidas C. Platanias, MD, PhD, director of the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University. “The H Foundation continues to help us provide critical funding and has had an extraordinary impact on ground-breaking research to develop more effective approaches for cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.” Good news for a great cause!
Cinema/Chicago and the 52nd Chicago International Film Festival revealed the winning design from its recent poster competition, Ollie Boyd's "Framed by the Love of Film." Depicting the Festival's iconic "eyes" logo framed by hands joined in the shape of a heart, the design epitomizes the tagline "because everyone
loves movies." The winning design was announced at the Festival Launch Party hosted at Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in the West Loop, where Festival leadership also announced early Festival programming news. Immediately following the event, passes became available for sale online (Fest runs from 10/13 to 27th). Boyd, a graphic designer who hails from Scotland, created the winning design and was selected out of over two hundred entries
from twenty countries. With its bold use of color and a familiar, welcoming expression, the design whimsically captures a universal love for film and elicits the affection associated with discovering a new favorite movie. The Chicago International Film Festival, which exists to celebrate the art of cinema and
the diversity of perspectives it offers, invites filmmakers and film-goers alike to discover that same affection over fifteen incredible days of premieres, events, conversations and panels. "We instituted the design competition to
bring as many perspectives to the table as we could, to see what others thought of when they considered how to visually present the Chicago international Film Festival," founder and artistic director Michael Kutza said. "And Ollie's design immediately captured our judges' eyes." Boyd shared, "I'm
absolutely thrilled to have my design chosen as the official poster for the 52nd Chicago International Film Festival. It's a great honor to follow in the footsteps of some of the amazing artists that have created posters for the festival over the years. My own design was inspired by the work of Saul Bass, who also produced poster designs for the festival in the past."
