The fifth annual EXPO CHICAGO, The International Exposition of Modern and Contemporary Art, welcomed more than 8,250 people during Vernissage, the opening night event benefiting the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) Chicago. A vast crowd of the city’s business, civic and cultural leaders filled Navy Pier’s Festival Hall on
September 22 as they were treated to a special preview of more than 145 of the world’s leading galleries from 22 countries and 53 cities. Noted guests included MCA Pritzker Director Madeleine Grynsztejn, MCA Curators

President/Director of EXPO CHICAGO Tony Karman took a moment to humbly thank the crowd for its tremendous support for the fair’s fifth year and spoke about the importance of EXPO CHICAGO’s partners including four-time presenting sponsor 
Northern Trust. On behalf of Northern Trust, Vice President of Wealth Management “Mac” MacLellan took the stage exclaiming that “EXPO CHICAGO is now back as a destination city for a world class international art exposition.” He added, “We are thrilled with the growth of this event which means so much to the city of Chicago and the art community globally. At the same time, our commitment to the exposition has grown as we now
have hundreds of clients here from all throughout the country in addition to expanded programming throughout the entirety of the fair.” MacLellan then introduced Navy Pier’s new Chief Program and Civic Engagement officer Michelle T. Boone who welcomed everyone to Navy Pier stating, “We really owe a great debt to EXPO CHICAGO for
establishing Navy Pier and really implanting in the mind of Chicagoans and visitors from around the world this magnificent site and space as a cultural destination." She added, “I think the work that Tony Karman has done has really laid the groundwork to introduce
so many visitors and Chicagoans and reconnect them to the pier through the arts and we are grateful for that and hope to build on this legacy EXPO CHICAGO has built.” Boone then introduced MCA Chicago’s Pritzker Director Madeleine Grynsztejn. She took a moment to recognize a special honor that was bestowed upon Tony Karman earlier in the evening when he was honored by the Republic of France as a 
Chevalier noting, “It is only but a small reflection of your impact on this city.” Karman closed with, “I am more than honored to stand here and represent all of us who work each and every day on EXPO CHICAGO in order to
ensure that this fair serves the international art world and that our city stays vital for years to come.” He added, “We wouldn’t be here if it wasn’t for institutions like the MCA. After building on what was the
legacy of vernissage from the “glory days” of an art fair in Chicago, it is now time to move forward and own the fact that EXPO CHICAGO and the city of Chicago are back as an annual international destination that we know reflects the beauty
of our city and the work.” With that, a bottle of Ruinart Champagne was popped and all rejoiced in a celebratory toast. Guests mingled throughout the show floor until 
9:00 pm when For Freedoms, part of EXPO CHICAGO’s IN/SITU program, initiated a balloon drop at the entrance of the exposition. Red, white and blue balloons descended upon the crowd and were popped by guests in order to find take-away artwork by artist Cheryl Pope. Love it!
The Joffrey Ballet hosted a cultural conversation with many of Chicago’s most powerful women and leaders in the arts on September 26 in honor of The Joffrey’s upcoming production of Romeo & Juliet, opening Thursday, October 13. Nearly 300
guests gathered at London House’s appropriately named Juliette Grand Ballroom to celebrate Krzysztof Pastor’s critically acclaimed reimagining of Shakespeare’s star-crossed
lovers in Romeo & Juliet. The event was co-chaired by Chicago business leaders and Joffrey Women’s Board members Jamie-Clare Colvin (chief of staff to Mellody Hobson, the president of Ariel Investments), Ellie Forman (corporate community relations manager, Mesirow Financial Holdings) and
Kathleen Henson (founder/CEO of Henson Consulting). The elegant, sunlit room overlooking the Chicago River was filled with exciting conversation about The Joffrey’s production. A discussion between Ashley Wheater, artistic director of The Joffrey, and Barbara Gaines,
artistic director of Chicago Shakespeare Theater, was moderated by Chicago Tribune theatre critic Chris Jones. The discussion explored why Shakespeare
remains relevant so many years after his work and how different art forms interpret his plays. Guests participated in a bag pull raffle sponsored by La Perla, featuring signature scents from their collection. Fashion illustrator Kristine Steiner drew

I went back home to Dupo, Illinois, for my first class reunion last weekend. This small railroad town, population 3000, sits near the banks of the Mississippi River and is within spitting distance from St. Louis (home of the dreaded Cardinals). The get-together was dubbed the "No-Class Reunion" since event organizers 
wanted to include ALL classes in the festivities but still, this title brought a great many chuckles. I always have mixed feelings about returning
home. On the one hand, I just can't wait to see my old friends again and I love the peace and quiet of my small town. I've probably romanticized it a bit in my mind from what it really was when I lived there, but then it's my story so that's
that. As we drove down Route 3, I remembered all the little businesses that dotted Main Street way back when before the big highway cut off the traffic and, basically, nearly killed our little town. My mom and
stepdad used to play cards and have a drink or two at Beason's Tavern, now vacant. Walter Nolte and his brother Fred owned the two grocery stores in Dupo, now a dental office and a pharmacy. It was good to see that
Dairyland still exists. We all used to go there for lunch in high school, play the jukebox and look at the cute boys with moon eyes over a hamburger. The high school looks more grand and elegant than I remembered. (See video here) When we drove
by, the cicadas were in full voice and it made me so proud to be a Dupo Tiger, even though during my valedictory speech in 1972, I skewered anyone who was in power at that time. I felt the
"powers that be" were treating us like kids who didn't have a clue instead of trying to instill a sense of responsibility and trust. I'm proud to say that people still talk about it to this day. On our first night, we visited with dear friends in Columbia
who were also Dupo High alums. Carolyn Teeter and I were cheerleaders together and her husband Wade was a sports star. They were childhood sweethearts and it made me so happy to spend time with them and Rod Lavender, another HS friend. His sisters, Donna and Dana, were high school
chums too so it was great to reminisce over cocktails and homemade gumbo. Dancing and more cocktails followed at Good Tymes Bar back in Dupo. Rod and Carolyn owned the dance floor (see video here) enjoying another high school friend's
(Mark "Mo" Mullins) band Boulderdash. And, of course, a visit back home always includes stopping by my old house at 325 Louisa Ave. (See video here). This house had been in our family for many years, having originally been purchased by my grandparents. It held many happy and
many sad memories for me but I was thrilled to see it so well taken care of. New owner (of 3 years) is Cathy Roy. After seeing my Facebook post featuring my
childhood home, she sent me the sweetest email. "We are truly blessed to have this home and have amazing memories already. Every day brings more," she shared. I wish her and her
family the best and plan on meeting them the next time we visit. The day of the reunion was a whirlwind. So many familiar faces, but a lot had changed. Namely, we were all a little older so the name tags certainly helped. 
Marsha Bieber English (now living in Hoffman Estates) organized this 6th reunion and did a great job. More than 300 people showed up representing 34 classes ranging in dates from 1940 through 2013! The
weekend also included our homecoming game (we lost), a Hills and Hollows 5K run in Valmeyer, tractor rides (see video here), a "Shop with a Cop" parade, hot dogs (sold by the junior class), music by Brad Noe and his band and more. The Dupo Educator's Hall of Fame, led by Davie Sue Raker, inducted Rita 
Cindrell, James Crouch and JoAnn Godare. Marsha welcomed the crowd and explained how this fun-filled weekend came about. (See video here). Nearly 6 years ago, she and Susie
Price Sager (my dearest friend) had made plans to meet up. For one reason or another, this didn't happen, so they both agreed to get together the next time. Well, there wasn't a
next time as dear Susie passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at age 55 on June 3, 2011. Marsha vowed this would never happen again to her or her friends. Now, the reunion is always held the last Saturday in September. Here's to meeting up with good friends
same time next year. You can always go home again and should.
Legendary comedian/nice guy Tom Dreesen was honored at the Museum of Broadcast Communications for his 48 years in show
business on Sept. 27. A sold-out room of friends and fans enjoyed a 3 hour program hosted by Dean Richards that included hilarious accounts of Dreesen's lifetime of experiences with Frank Sinatra, his early
beginnings and so much more. Illinois Senate President John Cullerton presented a certificate from the City Council proclaiming this day, "Tom Dreesen Day." (See video, with a cute twist here). Tom was also
presented with his very own Blackhawks jersey (Dreesen 1) from Jay Blunt. Attendees included Alderman Ed Burke, NBC radio and former Tuskegee Airman Lawton Wilkerson, former State
Senator Jim Deleo, Larry Wert, Peggy and Steve Lombardo, Jamie Masada (Laugh Factory), Brenda and Jack McHugh, Bruce MacArthur, Cindy Patrasso, Mark Roscoe, Joe Ahern, Pam Cullerton and

The 6th biennial Evergreen Invitational, an invite-only equestrian grand prix show jumping competition and luncheon, was held on September 10 at M.K. and J.B. Pritzker's farm in Bristol, Wisconsin. The event was co-chaired by Meredith Wood-Prince and Elizabeth A. Coleman and drew more than 600 guests who came to
support a wonderful cause and witness nationally ranked riders compete for the $25,000 Junior/Amateur Owner Classic and $75,000 Grand Prix prizes. A “Promenade of Shops” on the grounds featured the exquisite jewelry of Jack Vartanian, men’s haberdasher Frederick Lynn, classic American
clothier J. McLaughlin, Shelley Johnstone Design, Chicago Luxury Beds, Designs by Pinky, Ladybug Vintage, the exotic skin handbags of Swift Leather International
and J. Markell Designs. For the driving enthusiasts, automotive sponsor Lake Forest Sportscars displayed several Ferraris and offered test drives. Jewell Events catered the affair that also included a farm-to-table Bloody Mary bar. The day was a tremendous success
raising $1.4 million in sponsorships and commitments thanks, in part, to the Wood-Prince family, the Cressey Family Foundation, the Kovas Family, Joan and Charles Moore, Joan and Bill Brodsky, Lydia and Pat Ryan, Bulley &

The Friends of Prentice hosted its annual Benefit Evening, this year themed Passport to Prentice, on September 16 at the Four Seasons. During the program, the organization announced exciting news about receiving the largest single grant in its history to a crowd of over 400. The grant will fully fund a Collaborative Care Model for Perinatal Depression Support (COMPAS), an ambitious
program developed by Dr. Emily S. Miller. (Perinatal depression is one of the most common and devastating complications of pregnancy). Co-chairs Sharyl Mackey and Meghan Gill, along with the volunteer fundraising board, raised nearly $1M to further advance the quality of healthcare provided to 
women and infants in Chicago and beyond. The event featured a live auction, highlighting a travel experience that included business class tickets on Emirates Airlines to Dubai,
a stay at the exclusive St. Regis Dubai and the coveted Al Maha Desert Resort & Spa, followed by three nights at the St. Regis Bali. The package raised over $30,000. To date, Friends of Prentice has raised over $20 million to support research, education and patient care programs at Prentice Women’s Hospital.
The Children’s Service Board, an affiliated organization of Lurie Children’s, presented its signature event, the 61st Gold Coast Fashion Award Show, an evening of fashion and philanthropy, on Sept. 21 at the urban-chic Revel Fulton Market in Chicago’s
West Loop. The event raised $1.1 million to benefit Lurie Children’s groundbreaking pediatric cancer programs. Following a reception, the fashion show, curated and produced by Chicago fashion legend Susan Glick, VP of Women’s Apparel at the Merchandise Mart, and by the Gold Coast Fashion Award Show’s long-time partner and sole
retail sponsor, Neiman Marcus. The show included a competition segment in which five emerging designers competed for the coveted Gold Coast Fashion Award. Audience members viewed the designer’s fashions before casting a ballot for their favorite. The designer who received the most votes, Michael De Paulo, will return next year to receive
the Gold Coast Fashion Award and present his fall collection. Past winners and participants have included Tory Burch, Wes Gordon, Marc Jacobs, Donna Karan, Romona Kavza, Anne Klein and Jason Wu. This year’s fashion show headliners were Kempner,
Charles Harbison, De Paulo (the winner!), Nha Khahn and Wai Ming. Kempner, launched in fall 2014, pays homage to the iconic style of the designer’s grandmother, Nan Kempner,
with a modern sportswear collection. The brand was brought to life by brother and sister duo, Meggie and Chris Kempner. Their vision is to inspire confidence and vitality in women both young and old. Charles Harbison is the founder and creative
director of HARBISON, which launched in 2013 in Brooklyn, N.Y. Designed with a focus on construction, balance and the modernist code, this luxury women’s fashion brand is known for
its electric blends of prints, fabrics and inspirations. Michael De Paulo uses his Master's in Architecture from Northeastern University to create sculptural silhouettes and geometric
design in his collection. While he specializes in beautiful eveningwear with an innovative edge, De Paulo has also introduced a range of day separates that will continue to expand. Based in Dallas, Khanh Nguyen is the creative director and designer of the Nha Khanh label. Her designs focus on modern glamour and are inspired by art,

In honor of October’s National Breast Cancer month, TV personality and breast cancer survivor Giuliana Rancic and husband Bill Rancic, joined the Lynn Sage Cancer Research Foundation (LSCRF) to kick off the 15th annual Light the Way to Find a Cure campaign
at The Drake Hotel on Sept. 29. Giuliana kicked off the city-wide celebration of pink with the lighting ceremony at Chicago’s iconic Drake Hotel. LSCRF will light nearly 200 Chicago landmarks pink for the month of October, including The Willis Tower, The John Hancock Center, The Wrigley Building, The Merchandise Mart and Guaranteed Rate Field.
John Lanzendorf, Chicago's hairdresser to the stars, has just received another great honor! Remember back in 2001 when he had that amazing dinosaur collection that had its own wing at our Field Museum? Well, this
collection was later acquired in 2003 by the Indianapolis Children’s Museum where it has since been viewed by 14 million visitors! So, here’s the story– National Geographic Magazine has just announced it will perpetually underwrite “The John J. Lanzendorf National Geographic Paleontology Art Awards” to be given annually to artists who recreate dinosaur imagery in 2 and 3 dimensions. John loves to say, "I’m just this kid from Spooner, Wisconsin who wanted to make it big in Chicago as a hairdresser!" I think he
has realized his dream in spades! Congrats to this much loved man! I can't wait to see where he takes us next!
200 people gathered at the WTTW soundstage to support WINGS IN CHICAGO on September 17. It was a high
energy evening to support WINGS, Illinois’ largest not-for-profit housing provider dedicated to addressing the epidemic of domestic violence. The event featured a musical duel by Chicago Tonight’s political correspondent Paris Schutz
and Old Town School of Folk Music guitarist Jon Wall. Chicago’s popular jam band, Mr. Blotto, rounded out the entertainment from the Soundstage for the evening and emcee Jenniffer Weigel guided a
fund-a-need auction. John and Rita Canning, along with The Foglia Family Foundation, matched dollar-for-dollar all sponsorships and ticket sales as part of their combined $2 million challenge grant to complete the $10 million
capital campaign for WINGS Metro (a new safe house on Chicago's southwest side). Event sponsors included the Cannings, David Herro and Jay Franke, Helen Zell, Bill and Cathy Osborn, John H. Krehbiel Jr., Karen Z. Gray-Krehbiel and Wintrust. The event raised over $126,000 for the non-profit. Established in 1985, WINGS now owns and operates an emergency DV safe house in the northwest suburbs as well as 30
homes and apartments where families, who have experienced domestic violence, can live for free for up to two years. In addition, WINGS programs and services help women and men as well as their children become emotionally and financially independent. The 10th Anniversary Imerman Angels Wings of Hope Gala took place on September 17 at the Ritz-Carlton. The event welcomed 270 guests and raised more than $375,000 to benefit Imerman Angel’s mission to provide connections that enable one-on-one support for cancer fighters, survivors and caregivers.
During the program, Dr. Steven T. Rosen (Provost/Chief Scientific Officer & Director of the Comprehensive Cancer Center) and the Beckman Research
Institute for the City of Hope were awarded the 2016 Angel Award for Outstanding Medical Service in the Cancer Community. The award recognizes healthcare providers who demonstrate exceptional medical service and care for their patients and their families. The emcee for the
evening was Chicago native Bonnie Hunt, who first pursued her acting career at the renowned Second City while working as an oncology nurse for Dr. Rosen (when he was at Northwestern Memorial Hospital).
The Midwest Regional office of the U.S. Fund for UNICEF hosted its 6th annual UNICEF Chicago Humanitarian Awards Luncheon on Sept. 23 honoring four extraordinary Chicagoans who are contributing locally and internationally to the improvement of children’s lives: Dr. Gary Slutkin (founder / CEO of Cure
Violence), Thomas Geraghty (director of the Bluhm Legal Clinic at the Northwestern Pritzker School of Law), Diane Geraghty, (director of Civitas Child Law Center at Loyola University) and Zainab Zeb Khan (president of
Muslim American Leadership Alliance and the inaugural recipient of UNICEF’s Next Generation Humanitarian Award). This year’s luncheon welcomed over 400 guests and raised more
than $100,000 for UNICEF’s lifesaving programs that put children first. Attendees also heard a stirring keynote address from Lorraine Shamalla-Hannah, a UNICEF Polio
Training Specialist, who supports the training of frontline health workers. UNICEF has helped save more children’s lives than any other humanitarian organization. This year, UNICEF is celebrating 70 years of working to put children first – each and every child, no matter where they live.
Bright Pink, a national non-profit on a mission to save women’s lives from breast and ovarian cancer, debuted a new fundraiser, ChangeMakers: A Bright Pink Benefit presented by Deloitte on September 22 at Northwestern Pritzker School of Law's
Thorne Auditorium. This new networking and fundraising event attracted over 300 of Chicago's business and philanthropic community members and
raised funds to support Bright Pink's breast and ovarian health programs. The evening themed “Empowering Women Through the Art of Disruption,” featured cocktails, hors d’oeuvres and insightful presentations
highlighting the work of three game-changing visionaries. Each shared their personal stories of disruption through short, powerful talks centered on changing the game for women's empowerment and women's
healthcare. Janet Foutty, (chairman/CEO of Deloitte Consulting LLP) spoke on authenticity and leadership as a breast cancer survivor and the only female CEO to lead a major consulting practice. Othman Laraki (co-founder, Color Genomics) shared how his
background at Google and Twitter helped him disrupt the genetic testing marketplace and look toward the future of healthcare. Dr. Deborah Lindner (OB/GYN & Chief Medical Officer, Bright Pink) divulged how Bright Pink's Women's Health Provider Education Initiative is shaping new norms for health provider education. Two years ago Mary Ann Rose was asked by then Superintendent Garry McCarthy to establish the Chicago Police Foundation as the premier fundraising arm for the
Chicago Police Department. It’s no secret that the men and woman of the CPD have had to purchase their own vests, trauma kits, and in many instances, their own uniforms. Funds are also lacking for community and out-reach programs that would help to raise the awareness of the good that police officers bring to the city. This year, the foundation is committed to purchasing 2,000 trauma kits for the new recruits coming out of the academy and Mary Ann hopes we can all join her at the second annual True Blue Event on
Saturday, November 5, in the Hyatt Regency's Crystal Ballroom. Last year, the Foundation raised over $400,000 at its first event held at CPD Headquarters. For tickets and more info, click here.
