PAWS Chicago, the city's largest No Kill humane organization, hosted its 15th Annual Beach Party on July 20 at Castaways on North Avenue Beach. This year's sold-out event had more than 500 people and 100 dogs in attendance. The summer gala raised awareness about the life-saving work
PAWS Chicago is doing to end the killing of homeless dogs and cats. Emceed by country radio Hall of Famer Lisa Dent, the party was co-chaired by Dr. Tony Kremer and Michele Mistovich. The Pet Host Committee was comprised
of 77 dogs and cats, including Cosmo Crown, Tramp Tullman, and Taco Marchetti, whose sponsorships helped underwrite the expenses. The party was presented by Old Town Animal Care Center.
“Helping homeless pets is an integral part of what Old Town Animal Care Center is about, so partnering with PAWS Chicago, the most effective No Kill humane organization in the city made perfect sense,” said Beach Party
presenting sponsor and co-chair, Dr. Tony Kremer, Owner of Old Town Animal Care Center. PAWS Chicago is working to build a No Kill community through its free spay/neuter program in
underserved neighborhoods and through its comprehensive adoption program, taking in homeless animals, providing them with all necessary medical care and uniting them with new families. PAWS Chicago receives no government
funding and relies exclusively on the generosity of its donors and the success of events like these to continue and further its work.Lucky pups in attendance indulged in a doggie buffet provided by
PAWS Chicago’s exclusive feeding partner Merrick Pet Care, and were treated to pampered treatments at the Paradise 4 Paws “Dog Spa”, complete with animal paw-di-cures and splash pools. Some even danced the night away on the deck of Castaways. Their human counterparts enjoyed a beachfront
dinner buffet, photo booth, caricature artist, and a one-of-a-kind live and silent auction. Homeless dogs were available for adoption that evening, including Munchkin, a 9-year-old Chihuahua that was given up after her owner passed away. Munchkin
required medical attention upon her arrival at PAWS Chicago, including a full mouth dental extraction and treatment for an upper respiratory infection. Also in attendance that evening was Magellan, a four-month-old Yorkshire Terrier mix. He was found
abandoned on the streets of Chicago at a young age but his luck changed when he found a loving home at Beach Party! That Sunday, a record-breaking 57 pets also found forever homes during an Angels with Tails event in Roscoe Village! Happy "endings" all around! Arf! Arf!
Eversight Illinois hosted its 70th Anniversary Celebration, "Seeing Stars", at The Peninsula Chicago on July 26. The evening supported Eversight Illinois' mission of restoring sight and preventing blindness through donation,
transplantation and research. With themes of silver, black and white, the dramatic decor, by both Tamar Productions and Kehoe Designs, featured an illuminated,
freestanding 8-foot star as the central decor. It was surrounded by balloons with cascading ribbons set against a floor to ceiling mural of black and white images of past honorees and those who have helped make the gift
of sight a reality for thousands of recipients over the past 70 years. “It was such an honor to have a room full of individuals with the same passion and commitment of giving all patients suffering from corneal blindness the gift of sight,” said Diane Hollingsworth,
Executive Director of Eversight Illinois. “Our work truly would not be possible without the involvement of the community and passionate individuals like
Candace Jordan and Michael Caputo [event co-chairs]. Their efforts directly impact the people we serve each and every day.” A cocktail reception on The Peninsula’s Shanghai Terrace launched this year’s gala theme, “Seeing Stars.” Guests mingled, perused silent auction items and had their
portraits sketched by fashion illustrator Rosemary Fanti. Two "fortune tellers" added to the celestial fun. Partygoers also enjoyed a sizzling photo op posing
with "Silver Man,” a performance artist created by ZZAZZ Productions who was entirely outfitted in silver body paint, shimmering star motifs, and iridescent crystals. The Peninsula’s ballroom was adorned with glittery star centerpieces and midnight blue and silver
décor. A virtual star galaxy was projected throughout the room and added additional drama. Food stations represented a few of Chicago's iconic neighborhoods and included tasty
fare inspired by Greek Town, China Town, Italian Village, and the Magnificent Mile. Eli’s Cheesecake Company graciously provided a delicious and artistic 70th anniversary cake and DJ Akib kept the beat alive. MyEyeDr presented the ‘Eye Candy Bar,’ which provided a
variety of chocolate and candy treats and sweets for departing guests. The event raised over $50,000 to support the programs and services of Eversight Illinois, a non-profit that, in 2016 alone, facilitated more than 3,000
sight-restoring corneal transplants worldwide. Its mission is to recover, evaluate and provide human eye tissue for
transplantation; support research into the causes and cures of blinding eye conditions; promote donation awareness through public and professional education and provide humanitarian aid to people around the world in need of corneal transplantation. Cinema/Chicago and the 53rd Chicago International Film Festival presented a special tribute to two-time Academy Award-winner and three-time Golden Globe-winning actress Jane Fonda. A Tribute to Jane Fonda took place at the Radisson Blu Aqua
Hotel on July 29. The evening attracted over 300 guests and featured an on-stage conversation with Fonda, giving insight into her experience and approach to her craft, accompanied by iconic clips from her illustrious career, conducted by Richard Roeper. The celebratory evening concluded with the presentation
of The Chicago International Film Festival’s Gold Hugo Career Achievement Award to Fonda for her contributions to both film and television. Before receiving the award, Roeper took Fonda on a trip down memory lane discussing highlights of her illustrious film career. Fonda won the Best Actress Award in 1971 for Klute and in 1978 for Coming Home. And,
although she won awards for both, Fonda said the role that stuck with her the most was the character of Chelsea Wayne in On Golden Pond where she acted opposite her famous father, Henry Fonda. Katherine Hepburn also starred in the film and, as
Fonda recalled, helped her during a difficult scene by hiding in the bushes and telling her "you can do it." During the program, famous friends of Fonda appeared on-screen offering her
congratulations. They included past acting buddies Robert DeNiro, Robert Redford, Lily Tomlin (her recent co-star in Netflix's hit series, Grace and Frankie) and Geraldine Chaplin. Fonda was a three-time Golden Globe- winner and the 2014 recipient of the AFI Life Achievement Award. Along with starring roles in
dozens of highly acclaimed productions, Fonda also took on responsibilities as a film and television producer. Her credits include Coming Home, The China Syndrome, Nine to Five, Rollover, On Golden Pond, The Morning After and The Dealmaker. In 2007, Fonda received an Honorary Palme d’Or from the Cannes Film Festival, one of
only three people ever to be awarded this honor until then. In 2009, she received a Tony Award nomination for her role in Moisés Kaufman’s 33 Variations on Broadway. Her upcoming projects include a Robert Redford film, Our Souls at Night, set to premiere in the fall at the Venice Film Festival. Recently, she
started work on a movie called The Book Club. When Roeper concluded the discussion asking how she would like to be remembered, Fonda replied, "I'm too young to be able to answer that." Fonda is 79 years young.

Nearly 800 of Chicago’s philanthropists and social leaders converged at Shedd Aquarium on July 29 for one of the city’s premier summer fundraising events, BLU, to support Shedd’s mission of sparking compassion, curiosity
and conservation for the aquatic animal world. Hosted by Shedd Aquarium’s Auxiliary Board and co-chairs Jeffrey Ollada, Alexandra Miller and Whitney Key Towey, the event raised $400,000 to support Shedd’s conservation, sustainability and education initiatives. This year, “BLU Goes Green” to highlight the
aquarium’s many conservation initiatives, including the recent Shedd the Straw campaign and launch of the Aquarium Conservation Partnership. VIP guests enjoyed an early reception on the North Terrace with breathtaking views of the Chicago skyline and meet-and-greets with some of the Shedd's special
animal guests,including an up-close encounter with Shedd’s Magellenic penguins. The chic partygoers marveled at an exclusive aquatic presentation that featured dolphins, sea lions, and more in The Abbott Oceanarium that was lit with an impressive display of lights and sounds. During the special program, emceed by Shedd’s President and
CEO, Bridget Coughlin, a record-breaking paddle raise brought in more than $75,000 to support Shedd’s conservation efforts. One special bidder received a unique animal encounter when a
grateful sea lion laid a kiss on her cheek in thanks. Throughout the evening guests shimmied, sipped, and snacked, dancing and dining on some of the best food and drink Chicago has to offer. Partygoers
explored the Abbott Oceanarium, the Waters of the World galleries and Amphibians, special exhibit, and noshed on samplings from more than 20 of Chicago’s premier restaurants, including Hooked on Fish, Baptiste & Bottle, Bistro
730, Cemitas Puebla, Maple & Ash, Shaw’s Crab House and many more. Not to leave empty-handed, guests used their smartphones to bid on once-in-a-lifetime extraordinary experiences, including Lollapalooza
tickets, a Polaris test drive, and various experiences at Shedd that included a beluga encounter, shark feeding tour and more. As the sun sank over the glimmering
waters of Lake Michigan, the Sick Family Lakefront Terrace filled up with guests who gazed at the fireworks over Navy Pier. DJ Sherm in the Booth excited and delighted the crowd of pumped-up philanthropists as they danced late into the night under the dark sky. Concluding the eventful evening, shuttle service was provided at Shedd’s bus turnaround for a complimentary ride to River North.
The H Foundation’s 17th Annual Goombay Bash smashed all previous fundraising goals raising over $700,000 to benefit basic science cancer research at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of
Northwestern University in just one evening. The renowned Caribbean-themed “un-gala” was hosted by emcee Pete McMurray (WGN radio) along with lead sports anchor Ryan Baker (CBS 2 News) drew record numbers to Navy Pier’s Aon Grand Ballroom on
July 29 to help #smashcancer. Executive director Cortney Frahm said, “In 17 years, we have raised almost $8 million dollars to help find a cure for cancer donating
nearly every dollar to the research scientists at the Robert H. Lurie Comprehensive Cancer Center of Northwestern University.” Emcee McMurray kept the Bash moving interviewing special guests that included Jim Peterik (Ides of March), David Eigenberg (actor from Chicago Fire), some Chicago firefighters, Dr. Leonidas C. Platanias (director of the Cancer
Center at Northwestern University) and long time H-Foundation supporter George Wendt (“Norm” from the hit show Cheers). Dressed in Hawaiian shirts and leis, guests enjoyed the casual Caribbean-style event featuring 200+ silent auction packages, a live drawing of a $10,000 raffle prize (which was generously donated back to the H Foundation by
the winner), the Goombay Smash signature cocktail, a gourmet buffet, and a live auction. Event highlights included an appearance by actor and Naperville native David Eigenberg from Chicago Fire and Sex and the City. Eigenberg surprised guests when he entered the stage dressed as a firefighter with his friends from the Chicago Fire Department. A surprise performance by Jim Peterik,
also known for co-writing “Eye of the Tiger” from Rocky III, delighted guests. Guests also enjoyed mingling with a long list of professional athletes including former Chicago Bulls player Bill Cartwright, former Chicago Bears player Doug Plank, and former Chicago Blackhawks player Brent Sopel. During
his comments, Dr. Platanias reminded guests of the mission of the foundation, “The harsh reality is that while we were at the Goombay Bash raising money for cancer research, almost 2,000 people had lost their battle with cancer.” Platanias explained, “The H Foundation continues to help us provide critical funding and has had an extraordinary
impact on ground-breaking research to develop more effective approaches for cancer prevention, detection, and treatment.” The
inaugural “Guiding Lighting Award” was presented to the following lighting companies: Generation Brands, Hinkley, Kichler, Quoizel, Satco, and WAC Lighting. The evening, presented by AXION Risk Management Strategies, ended

Tom Kehoe, Kehoe Designs/The Geraghty Chicago, recently lost his beloved dad Luke at age 90. At a funeral on August 7 at St. Raymond de Penafort Parish in Mount Prospect, a standing room crowd of family and friends gathered together to mourn the loss of this gentle man. Tom delivered a moving eulogy about his dad who always insisted on family dinners nightly at 6 where he would give his nine kids something more precious than objects, he gave them his time, his heart and his ear. Granddaughters Nicole Kehoe, Kelly McGowan and Karly McGowan also spoke. Eight grandsons served as pallbearers. RIP Luke, you were much
loved.
On another sad note, Chicago lost one of its biggest champions, John E. "Jack" McHugh, who passed away from natural causes on June 15. During a Celebration of his Life at Gibson's 42 Club
restaurant on Rush St., his longtime friend, comedian Tom Dreesen served as host. Since it was a celebration, the event was big on humor. Dreesen said, "If Jack would've been here tonight, he would've left 15 minutes ago." Another friend said, "If he could've attracted this many people when he was alive, he wouldn't have closed the Four Torches." EVERYONE agreed that if
it wasn't for the love, support and care from his wife Brenda, he would've been gone 15 years ago. Dreesen also touched on his well known modesty. Jack received great acclaim playing football for St. Rita's High School.
He scored 16 touchdowns in one season and never wanted to talk about it. Dreesen said, "If that had been me, I would be wearing my jersey tonight." On the handout at the event, an unattributed quote reads: "We meet but briefly in life, if we touch each other with stardust–that is everything." Jack, you sprinkled stardust everywhere you went.
Renowned chef/partners Armando Vasquez and Joey Mondelli of Chicago’s famed La Scarola Italian Restaurant are celebrating the launch of their first book entitled “The Walls of La Scarola” which chronicle the celebrity pictures on the walls of the famous restaurant, combined with stories from notable guests as well as

Philanthropist Richard Driehaus threw his annual summer bash for over 1100 invite-only guests on July 29 in Lake Geneva. Always rivaling anything Jay Gatsby could dream up, the party this year had an old fashioned diner
theme with guests even enjoying fare off of TV dinner trays! On the opulent grounds, Richard had created a magical wonderland that included Mom's Diner, an American farm stand and more. The invite was a fabulous 3-D pop-up of a drive-in complete with cars from the 50's and
flashing lights with the invite displayed as a video on the movie screen. The RSVP was a replica of a bag of French fries! And, of course, the top notch entertainment, besides the fireworks? Jay Leno performed. Ah, the good life. 🙂
Huge congrats to dear friend and make-up "Maestro" Michael Perich! A kick-off party for Haute Dog Chicago was held at the lavish Gold Coast home of Dr. Jim Platis and wife Kate, event committee chair, on August 8. Supporters gathered together on the grand terrace
to hear Canine Companions for Independence development director Laurel Marks share the mission of the non-profit. She said, "Help is a four-legged word and it comes in the form of these amazing dogs that have changed the lives for people with disabilities. Canine Companions
provides expertly trained assistance dogs and ensures the success of each partnership through lifetime follow-up services, all free of charge." Supporters in attendance included Angie DeMars, Mitchell Hatcher,

Recently, I had the honor of touring a Chicago treasure that, surprisingly, I knew nothing about until Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas
introduced me to it! She has been taking classes at The French Pastry School for a while and was so enthusiastic about what they do there that she arranged a tour for me. I met with co-founders Chefs Sebastien Canonne and Jacquy Pfeiffer and was immediately charmed. Their culinary skills and enthusiasm carried over into the 1000-strong student body, some of the
most creative people I've ever met. On display, were cakes, candies, breads, pastries and a variety of other desserts. The cakes, and all the rest, were pure works of art (see amazing video here) and I could see why Maria was so excited. The school has been around since 1995 and offers both
professional classes (for credit, it's part of the City Colleges of Chicago system) and for fun (its "Food Enthusiast" classes). What a joy to know we have this unique school right in the heart of the city! Thanks Chefs Sebastien and Jacquy for your passion and leadership! You make life so much "sweeter"! I'm a big fan of Robert Feder's blog and, recently, he shared this inspiring story. He wrote: Although “The Kathy & Judy Show” has been off the air since February, Kathy O’Malley and Judy Markey still have a powerful connection with their audience. No wonder O’Malley and Markey’s legion of fans — a loose-knit sorority known as “The Girlfriends” — was so disappointed when the
duo was dropped from the Saturday lineup on WGN AM 720. (It was the second time they’d been canceled by the Tribune Broadcasting news/talk station. Their first run together ended in 2009 after 20 years in middays.) Just this week a poem O’Malley posted on the “Kathy and Judy” Facebook fan page generated more than 166,000 likes and more than 25,000 comments in only five days. It’s been shared more than 90,000 times. “I truly was stunned by the reaction,” O’Malley said.
Nothing she or Markey had written for the site ever made such an impact. O’Malley said it took her only 10 minutes to compose the verse, a bittersweet ode to the maladies and mishaps common to older women. “This certainly was not a Judith Viorst piece,” she said. “This was just a ‘sit down and make it rhyme’ poem. Howard Tullman, CEO of 1871, will step down from his leadership role at Chicago's foremost tech incubator hub at the end of the year. Tullman, who according to Forbes magazine has “built more companies than most people have worked for,” is a well-known face in the Chicago business community, but after four years at the helm of 1871 he's moving on. “I think three or four years into something it’s important to let new ideas come in,” Tullman said in an interview with Paris Schutz. “It’s important to turn over the leadership. I want to give other people the opportunity to move up.” In this WTTW Chicago Tonight story by Paul Caine, Tullman says he is proud of what 1871 has been able to achieve and notes that when the tech incubator was founded less than 2 percent of the city’s economy

Playboy's iconic Midsummer Night's Dream Party returned to the Mansion in Holmby Hills on Saturday, August 12. And, even though we were unable to attend this year, it gladdens my heart to see Cooper Hefner's name was proudly displayed on the invite as
the host. I think he's a godsend for the brand and the magazine and I believe he has his dad's sensibilities at heart in everything he does to represent Playboy. I'm also pretty geeked out to receive a personal invite–now that is special! Good luck Cooper, hope you had fun at your sexy, sleepwear party and, oh yes, give the Rabbit King a hug from me!
