"In my wildest dreams, I could not have imagined a sweeter life." This is Hugh Marston Hefner's quote that appeared on the covers of the two invitations to his Celebration of Life tributes, one held at the Playboy Mansion in Holmby Hills in California on Sunday, November 12, and the second in Chicago at the Ritz-Carlton on Monday, November 13. As excited as I was to return to the L.A. Mansion and see all the Playmates
and the Hefner family and friends, in my heart of hearts, I knew it would be the last time at this glorious, magical place Hef called his Shangri-La. The night before the memorial, I was thrilled to gather with friends at Madeo's in Beverly Hills. My best friend Tissy Eggleston, along with Playmates Cathy St. George and Ava Fabian, all shared personal stories about the legendary man we loved and
lost. Cathy recounted a tradition I wasn't aware of. In the past, Playmates would drop notes to Hef during parties or events in a sculpture shaped like a woman's behind. I can only imagine the smiles this must've
brought to his face. The following day, we met at the UCLA parking lot, as was customary for parties at the Mansion, to board the trolleys. Due to parking constraints in and around this pricey neighborhood, this was the best means of transport. (There were approximately 300 guests at the LA Celebration). As we pulled up to the grand, iron gates for the last time, I was touched by the items admirers had secured to there
as a tribute to Hef. Someone had mounted, what looked like, a child's vintage plush toy of a white rabbit. Alongside this was a pillow edged in gilt fringe with a large photo in the middle of Hef with the late Anna Nicole Smith (Playmate of the Year
1993). Further up the driveway, the iconic sign, "Playmates at Play" was a sad reminder that this would never be the case again. After departing the trolley, guests were directed to the back of the Tudor-style house where a large tent had been erected. Beside the podium, two video monitors displayed images of Hef with his trademark smile. I just know he was
thrilled to see one more gathering of his nearest and dearest friends in the place that he loved the most. Beautiful white roses and displays of mixed flowers dotted tables spread out on the lawn underneath white
tablecloths. A lavish buffet was served on multiple levels surrounding the famous grotto. I took a walk down to the area reserved for the zoo that Hef loved so much. He was the only resident of Holmby Hills to have a zoo license grandfathered in
and I hope the new owner will keep it intact. One of the keeper's said, so far, there's been no word about disbanding it. This is good news for all the little spider monkeys who were flitting around their cozy cages with babies on their backs. In the crowd, I saw Norman Lear (who spoke during
the service), ex-bandleader Ray Anthony, Sherry Lansing (former CEO Paramount Pictures), Rascal Flatts' lead guitarist/singer Joe Don Rooney and his wife Tiffany Fallon (PMOY 2005 ), Lillian Muller (PMOY 1976), Mary Lou Hamill, James Caan, Steve Bing, Brande Roderick (PMOY 2001), Kimberly Conrad (Hef's ex and PMOY 1989), the Bentley twins (Mandy and Sandy), Marilyn Grabowski (PB's former
West Coast photo editor), Barbi Benton and husband George Gradow, Devin Devasquez
(PM June 1985) and actor/singer Ronn Moss, Monique St. Pierre (PMOY 1979), Barry Gordy Jr. (who spoke at the service), Nels Van Patton (actor/producer), Alison Reynolds, Ava Fabian (Miss Aug. 1986), (Dick Rosenzweig (former PB exec who spoke at service), Patti McGuire Connors (PMOY 1977) and Jimmy Connors …..And, of course Hef's beautiful widow Crystal and her
mom along with his darling kids Cooper, Marston, Christie and David. As Cooper opened the program, it didn't surprise me that even the peacocks were crying. He started with a quote and, as the tears flowed,
he apologized and the crowd supported him with loving applause. He said, "I was reading some work by Walter Lippman this past week that made me pause. He talked about men who plant trees that other men will sit under. My dad was such a man except, in his case, he planted a forest." He continued, "Through his pursuit for truth and success, he fought for issues that seemed to accidentally and eventually allow him to be an
author of our collective history. He spent his life, not just as an editor or a publisher or a marketer, but as a creator and a philosopher, challenging the world to do better…Whether it was his undeterred convictions to diminish sex and sexuality as taboo; his fight in the civil
rights arena; his attempt to normalize the conversations around women's health care; or draw negative attitudes away from the lesbian and gay communities, or simply a fight for the individual's right to live the life he or she wanted to live–
he spent his life in a boxing match for all of our rights…All he ever wanted was to make the world just a little bit better and to smile all while doing it." Norman Lear brought laughter from the crowd. After needing help to mount a large
step up to the podium, he finally reached the mic and said, "Shit. I really wanted to do that myself." He recounted meeting Hef when he [Lear] was a young screenwriter. "Hugh Hefner was a pioneer, a visionary and a first amendment warrior," he said. Barry Gordy Jr., looking very dapper at 87 years old, spoke about his 25 years of friendship with Hef. He said, "He was the epitome of friendship and love and lived a life with more true friends that anyone I ever knew…Here [at the Mansion], it wasn't about who you are or what you do, but rather
what you're made of." Other speakers included Hef's lawyer Tony Glassman, Steve Randall (a longtime, former employee of the magazine), Dick Rosenzweig (a former PB exec who is also Cooper's godfather), Professor Rick Jewell
(USC Film School–Hef was a visiting professor there with an endowed chair, and loved it) and Dr. Mark Saginor (Hef's doctor). Rosenzweig noted that Hef was a direct descendant of William Bradford, who came over on the Mayflower in 1620. "I think many of his values came from this distinguished bloodline," he said. Hef's daughter Christie closed the program, using no notes, with an eloquent commentary on her dad's remarkable life. She noted that, yes, he loved women. "As a matter of fact," she said, "His two closest confidantes were Mary O'Connor and Bobbie Arnstein." Christie
got emotional speaking about the joy Hef's widow Crystal had given her father during the last two years and looked her way in the front row in kind acknowledgement. She added, "And in this time when, every day, we are told about the predators, boors and pigs, he [Hef] was the consummate gentleman. To women, he was kind and defined what it meant to be a romantic in his relationships." A video opened to the sounds of
Jimmy Durante singing "Young at Heart" and Hef speaking: "A question that I'm always asked, is how much of the mystique is real and is it as much fun as it appears to be? And the honest answer is 'more.''' A treasure trove of footage showed Hef as a little boy, looking as devilish as ever; traveling the world; partying with famous friends; the Big Bunny, his beloved custom jet; his most important relationships, both with women and famous friends and the joys of his life, of course, his kids and Crystal. The video ended
with Joan Baez singing "Forever Young" and Hef saying: "If I were to rewrite my life from beginning to end, one might change a few punctuation points, which would be business matters, but the things that mattered could hardly have worked out any better. I'm a lucky fellow." By the time it was all over, tears had wiped away all the ladies' mascara and men were unashamedly crying into their handkerchiefs. Following the service, no one wanted to leave the grounds. People wandered around in a daze taking in as
much as they could, recalling fond memories, storing up mental images and soaking in the atmosphere that had made this place so special. I tried to do the same. It only made me sadder. I was honored to be there but glad to go. Hef's spirit just wasn't there. You could feel it–or rather, you could feel nothing at all. Another Celebration of Life was held the following day in Chicago at the Ritz-Carlton. I was honored to
be invited to both and surprised to be the only Playmate at the Chicago service. I loved seeing former/fellow Playboy Bunny friends manning the check-in desk. Jackie Williams, Cheryl Carioscia and Anna D'Agata looked like they could still easily slip into their costumes. Anna told me, "I feel like this is the last Bunny promo." And I knew
exactly what she meant. For this tribute, hosted by Bill Kurtis, speakers included Rick Kogan, Bill Zehme, Reverend Jesse Jackson, Rosenzweig, Christie and Cooper. Kogan spoke most eloquently about the man that he'd interviewed on occasion, always calling him Mr. Hefner. He said, "There could have been no other place on this earth that would've informed the life of Hugh Hefner as did Chicago." Guests at the Chicago tribute, comprised mostly of corporate and business types, included the legendary Art Paul (who created the Bunny logo), Gary Cole (former PB director of photography), Jeff Cohen (former PB art director), Martha and
Rich Melman, Marina and Dr. Arnie Tatar, Linda Johnson Rice, Leslie Hindman, Elizabeth Norris (former Playmate Promotions Director), Michael Kutza, Pat Tomlinson, Dori Wilson, Sherren Leigh, Mary Ann Childers, Millie (Christie and David's mom), Dr. Lauren Streicher and Jason Brett, Garry Meier and Marlene Iglitzen, among others. I'm so grateful for my life with Playboy and am glad I had this last chance to say goodbye. Kogan said in his closing remarks, "Local boy makes good." How 'bout "local boy changes the world?" (Chicago photos by Richard Shay).
The Children's Service Board (CSB), an affiliate organization of the Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago, hosted the 62nd annual Gold Coast Fashion Awards Show on Oct. 12 at the urban-chic Revel Fulton Market. This year’s show honored American fashion designer Pamella Roland with the Children’s Service Board Award of Excellence.
"Since her win in 2003, Roland has upheld the mission and values of the Children’s Service Board through her steadfast support of Lurie Children’s. Her love for the Chicago community and unwavering philanthropic support made her an easy choice for this year’s award." Co-chaired by Kristina Nicolas and Megan Hodes along with CSS board president Nicole Legere, the fundraiser kicked off with a cocktail reception and hors
d’oeuvres from many of Chicago’s most popular restaurants, including Le Colonial, Sunda, Rosebud on Rush, Lou Malnati’s,
Gibson’s, Bar Siena and many more. Following the cocktail hour, guests gathered for the high-fashion presentation from Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenue, the GCFAS’s long-time retail sponsor. Models walked the runway, showcasing the latest fashions on display at the luxury specialty store this fall. As the fashion show concluded, Legere,
welcomed Roland onstage, presenting her with her much deserved award. Throughout the exciting ceremony, a collection of Roland’s newest designs were featured onstage. The fashion portion was followed by a paddle raise and live auction where guests bid on prizes with proceeds directly benefiting the Molecular Oncology and Bioinformatics
Program. A few of the hot-ticket auction items included an ultimate Chicago Sports package, a bespoke Aspen/Snowmass ski vacation, "Racing with the Rahals" at the 2018 Indianapolis 500 and a VIP Chicago dining
package that included a progressive dinner through Boka Restaurant Group and a private in-home dinner by Chef Perry Hendrix of Avec, among others. The evening came to a close with a decadent dessert bar from some of Chicago’s favorite sweet shops, including Glazed and Infused and Sweet Mandy B’s. More than 500 guests joined the sold-out Jackson Chance Foundation’s Fifth Annual Playing it Forward Ping Pong Ball, a fun and interactive ping pong party co-chaired by Heather Boyer and Tom Bulow and benefiting families with critically ill babies in the neonatal
intensive care unit (NICU). The event, held November 9th at the Hard Rock Hotel Chicago, broke fundraising records raising more than $350,000. The Ball featured four hours of table tennis fun, a lively party with delectable food and drink, a step and repeat, hand drawn illustrations by Kristine Steiner, crazy games like beer pong, with culinary treats and cocktails
provided by Mr. Brown's Lounge and the Hard Rock Hotel Chicago, GIF photo booth by The Bosco (which I love!) and unique auction packages with everything from vacations in Mexico, Nashville, and Park City to in-home dining experiences
from Chopped Champion Cory Morris. The VIP tournament, hosted by NICU mom Kye Martin of NBC5, featured a table tennis tournament between Chicago’s favorite sports teams. Players included Brian Campbell (Blackhawks), Jerry Azumah (Bears), Ron Kittle (White Sox), Will Perdue (Bulls) and Sean Marshall (Cubs).
And the winner was Ron Kittle, who won the VIP tournament's bragging rights! Last year’s crowd-favorite, top-ranked young pro and NICU alum, Nandan Naresh, and his brother Sid taught
guests some tips and tricks with tournament host Joola USA before the main event tournament started. Val Warner (Windy City Live) emceed the main event that included a table tennis tournament of more than 30 players, which was ultimately won by former Chicago Cubs player Jason Hammel (now with the Kansas City Royals). The Foundation also presented the
coveted 2nd annual Owl Give Award to NICU nurse Tiffany McCallum of Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital who received an all-expense paid vacation to the Caribbean and lifelong tickets to the Ping Pong Ball. More than 60 entries of deserving NICU nurses submitted from all over the country were received.
A "Salute to Vietnam Veterans" was hosted at Union League Club of Chicago, on November 10 to honor those who served during the Vietnam War. More than 300 attendees, including VW veterans and surviving spouses, attended the event and received much-deserved honors. The event kicked off with a reception and
resource/information tables staffed by representatives of organizations serving veterans, including the John Marshall Law School’s Veterans Legal Support Center.
Next, the program began including an introduction from the Master of Ceremonies Harry F. Sawyer, Assistant Director, IL Department of Veterans’ Affairs; welcoming from William Nissen, Union League Club of Chicago President; brief remarks from Illinois Secretary of
State Jesse White and a keynote address by Acting Secretary of the Army Ryan McCarthy, who was introduced by Erica Jeffries, Director of the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. Speeches followed with a musical performance by the West Point Glee Club and the presentation of the commemorative pin. Photos by Joe Gallo).

Nearly 150 guests recently gathered at The Arts Club to celebrate the Old Town School of Folk Music’s 60th anniversary, "The Legends Dinner," and the community who
helped make it possible: the faculty, students, performers and patrons alike. The event began with a cocktail reception followed by a special musical tribute and dinner honoring the School’s legacy – from its humble beginnings in 1957 as a group guitar class in an Oak Park dining room to its launch pad for the careers of Dave Prine, Bonnie Koloc and
Roger McGuinn to its current stature as the largest community school for a myriad of art forms in the country. In keeping with a tradition established in 2014, the School also
saluted its 2017 Old Town School Distinguished Teaching Artists, Julie Helenius, Jacob Sweet and Chris Walz. Co-chaired by Martina Keller and Kim Moran, the event raised funds to support Old Town School's mission of providing
arts access to all including outreach programs and financial aid. The School provides a wide range of music, dance, theater, and visual arts courses to people of all ages, abilities, and backgrounds. Whatever one’s interest, the Old Town School provides broad
access to more than 700 accredited class offerings, private lessons and over 400 concerts per year! (I know my Old Town former neighbor/ friend Diane Gonzalez just loves it and is a proud, talented member)! (Photos by Robert Carl).
I was thrilled to be invited back on Fox-32's "Good Day Chicago" to chit-chat about the recent Royal engagement! Sadly, I couldn't make it into the studio due to Trib deadlines, but I was happy to talk via phone with Sylvia Perez and Natalie
Bomke about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's wildly anticipated and greatly expected engagement announcement. The first American to wed a Royal since 1936 when Wallis Simpson wed then King Edward VIII, Markle is the perfect match for Harry, in my opinion. They both are devoted humanitarians and just so damn cute
together! I love that he A) got down on one knee to propose and B) that he designed her engagement ring and included two of his mother's diamonds. Both Prince Harry and William have now used stones from their mother's personal collection in their beloveds' rings. Diana would be oh-so proud of
them both! Love this happy news!
A special thanks to David Peterkofsky for including me in his unique podcast "For Keeps" about "collections and connections." I think everyone knows I'm an avid fan of both Playboy and Hef but I'm also an eager collector of PB memorabilia. Listen to this fun-filled interview as I discuss my treasures here!
Speaking of interviews, I was honored to be included on the legendary Mancow Muller Show recently on WLUP. I have never seen anything like it in all my years of being on radio and TV. The man is a genius and definitely the wizard behind the curtain. He seemed like an octopus and was flying over the keyboards like a man possessed. His A-List team, Al Roker
Jr., Cathy the Greek, Abe the Chameleon and DJ Luv Cheez, all try hard to keep up with him and they do succeed but I have no idea how. He can be conducting a phone interview, picking out music for the next segment and directing the team all at the same time. I was spellbound. I took a video of the Green Room because even that was a unique experience
(see it here). On the website for his show, he states, "This is my final act [The Loop] because I don't believe I'll ever top this! Chicago is a tough city for commuters and our ONLY goal with this show is to provide an escape and make our listeners laugh." I think he is succeeding.
The Hyde Park Art Center welcomed over 500 guests to honor three esteemed members of the Chicago arts community; Shirley and Walter Massey and artist and educator Anne Wilson. The successful and fun-filled event
was organized by two families who served as co-chairs, Sundeep Mullangi and Trissa Babrowski, and Monica and Bill Hughson. Numerous pillars of the Chicago creative community, including Dawoud Bey, Rhona Hoffman and Elissa Tenny filled the Art Center for a night of celebration. The gala kicked off
with a lively cocktail reception where guests bid on silent auction items, explored artists’ studios and entered to win an art collection of works on paper by more than 50 Chicago artists. Partygoers then indulged in a sumptuous dinner and enjoyed a heartfelt testimonial from Teen Programs Participant Madison Holley, as well as words of acknowledgement by the honorees Shirley,
Walter and Anne. Following dinner, guests returned upstairs for the Art Center’s official After-Party and celebrated with cocktails, dessert, music by Audio Jack and artist activities provided by Aurora Tabor, Documents Bureau, Jason Dunda & Paul Hopkin, Jessie Mott, Michelle Nordmeyer, Amina Ross, Kristine Steiner and Katie Vota. The event raised over $380,000 to benefit the Hyde Park Art Center
and keep it free and open to the public. Among the programs that will be supported is The Community Supported Arts School, Chicago’s first open-access arts school and an arts-learning model in which learners of all ages and backgrounds can develop their creative skills and voices.
I loved spending time with the beautiful Cathy St. George when I was in L.A. recently. She was Playboy Magazine's Miss Aug. 1982, and during our dinner chat, she mentioned that she had spent a lot of time at NYC's Studio 54 back in the
day. I too had enjoyed the decadent nightlife there when I was modeling for Wilhelmina so we had a great discussion. As it turns out, she had recently co-hosted a killer book launch party at Georgio's at The Standard in Hollywood on Sept. 19 for a man who had
experienced it from the inside out, Mark Fleishman, the author of "Inside Studio 54." and a former owner. In the early eighties Fleischman bought Studio, the world’s most glamorous and notorious
nightclub, from original owners Steve Rubell and Ian Schrager for $4.75 mil, and reopened it after it had been closed down by the state of New York. Ten thousand people showed up that night, ready to restart the party that abruptly ended after the raid in 1978 landed its former owners in jail. Hosts for the recent book launch party were Nikki Haskell, Adam Bravin, Henry Eshelman, Brad Weida, Tyson Cornell, Danny Fitzgerald, Mimi
Fleishman, Rich Ferrari, Bryan Rabin and, of course, Cathy. Back in the day, Cathy was even feted at the original Studio 54 in August 1982 to celebrate the publication of her Playboy centerfold! There she was joined by an ardent admirer, Tony Danza, who came to the party with his mom Ann, who had been trying to fix the two cuties up. Girl, you got your
own book in you!! Love you Cathy!

Well, that's it for this edition! I hope you're enjoying the holidays as much as we are! Decorating for Christmas is one of my favorite activities and I've been working like a
crazed elf getting it all up. This year, we have a tree in the bedroom and four on our terrace, besides the big tree in the living room. We have Christmas discs playing constantly and the glow from the holiday lights, both inside and outside, makes me grin from ear to ear. Now, all I have to do is wait by the door
for Larry Armstrong's annual holiday cookie delivery and we're all set! I hope your holiday plans are making you feel warm and fuzzy too!
Love, as always,
Candace
P.S. And, of course, something to leave you with a smile…..
