Grammy-winning artist wowed the crowd in a skin-tight purple catsuit, her favorite color, singing a wide-ranging variety of songs with her 4 back-up singers, the Hudsonettes. This was her first time performing with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra but not her first time at Ravinia–that debut was in 2011. The sellout crowd was electrified from the start, when she made her entrance, appearing as if by magic at the back of the Pavilion.

were invited backstage, thanks to Ravinia's PR whiz Nick Pullia, for a meet-and-greet that included several popular media peeps like Brittney and Connie Payton, Dina Bair, Jeanne Sparrow, Melissa Forman, Sylvia Perez and Cheryl Burton. There were about 25 guests in the small green room and she chatted and took photos with each and every one–never once losing that beautiful smile on her face. I've had the pleasure of meeting Jennifer before and she has always been incredibly nice and genuine–even as her star climbs ever higher, she will always be a our "hometown Jenny." Friday night at the Dalcy, at an intimate party hosted by Mesirow's Les Coney and Chaka's friend/manager/stylist George Fuller. Guests at this private meet-and-greet enjoyed a Q&A conducted by Fuller where she discussed, among many topics, how she got her start. (See video here). I am MAD about Marian!! The Music Man, running now at the Goodman Theatre (thru August 18) is a nostalgic look back at small town America and reminded me just how much I miss my own little town of Dupo, Illinois. I went in expecting Robert Preston and I came out with a deep appreciation of this hard working cast led by Geoff Packard as Harold Hill and expertly directed by Mary Zimmerman. The choreography, the songs, the staging all took us back to a kinder, gentler time and we loved every minute of it. And even though I knew the story, I still cried when the marching band appeared. Great news for local nonprofits! Art Van Furniture is celebrating more than a decade of giving back with the company’s 11th Annual Charity Challenge, which allows nonprofit organizations committed to women, children and human services to vie for 10 grants totaling $250,000, ranging from $5,000 to $100,000. Applications are open now through Aug. 19. Participating charities will compete to raise the most money from September 9 through 27. The top 10 fundraising nonprofits will be honored and receive their grants at Art Van Furniture’s 60th anniversary gala on October 24. I was proud to interview him on the opening night of this exhibit where many of his "ladies" were in attendance wearing his glam gowns. We touched on his many accomplishments– chairman/CEO of Creativity United, founder of the "We Dream in Color Foundation,", self-taught fashion designer, minister and many others. His foundation supports the homeless and at-risk youth as well as men going through transitional assistance programs. His Humanitarian Awards, which will be held this year on Saturday, July 13, will be emceed by Suzanne LeMignot and feature a fashion show and awards program. Chicago Ducky Derby coming August 8 to benefit Special Olympics!

Over 60,000 rubber ducks will drop off the Wabash Bridge into the Chicago River at 1 pm, August 8. The 14th annual Chicago Ducky Derby will benefit Special Olympics and enthrall people of all ages who watch the ducks "race" to the finish line. Marsha Brenner

I was so sad to learn of the passing of Marsha Brenner, the long-time executive director of the Apparel Industry Board. We had lunch together the week before with her "right arm," Ambar Campos. She was so enthusiastic about upcoming plans that it was very hard to believe that she passed away so soon after. During lunch, she talked about how lucky she was to have found Ambar to help her out as she advocated for Chicago designers. Marsha was always a tough little cookie who spoke her mind. I won't lie when I say we had our run-ins but I always admired her tenacity and love for Chicago fashion. She will be missed by all who knew her and especially by the designers whose lives she touched. It was a private service with family requesting donations be made to the COPD Foundation.

Face the Future Foundation (FFF) held its annual gala at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago on March 23. This year’s event, themed "Under the Big Top," attracted 370 people and raised nearly $600,000 (including a generous $50,000 donation from the Chicago Title Bowl-a-thon fundraiser.) Designer Borris Powell bares his soul at his "Trapped" fashion show.

On March 24 at the Drake Hotel one of Chicago's most beloved fashion designers bared his soul through his #TRAPPED collection. It was an exciting fashion moment, as all of Borris Powell's' runway shows are, but it also came with a touchingly honest revelation on the life he's led. As a sellout crowd enjoyed his latest looks, a new line that transcends seasons and instead embraces them all (his Trans Season Collection), no one was aware of the pain Borris had kept from even his closest friends. In Borris' own words, "I feel that while this is my most favorite collection that I've ever designed, it was the most hurtful at the same time. I personally was going through a lot of disappointment, heartache, shame, feeling of loneliness, and so much more that started to lead to a bit of depression. For way too long I would hide these feelings out of shame, or the fact that I thought I would scare friends and clients away. The Les Turner ALS Foundation hosted its annual Hope Through Caring Gala on March 9 at Rockwell on the River in Chicago. Nearly 450 people helped honor Mindy Evans-Williams and Robert L. Sufit, MD, raising $617,000 for the foundation. The gala featured a video presentation, paddle raise, balloon raffle, award presentations and music by The Chicago Players. Emcee Paul Lisnek (of WGN-TV) opened the evening’s program followed by heartfelt remarks from Les Turner ALS Foundation’s CEO Andrea Pauls Backman and board chair Ken Hoffman. Andrea and Ken spoke of the

Foundation’s role in the lives of those affected by ALS and thanked the 21 men and women living with ALS who were in attendance. “We were honored to be joined by so many people living with ALS and are grateful to everyone we serve for trusting us with their care,” said Backman. “People living with ALS and their families are the spirit of what we do, and every decision we make and step forward we take is informed by and because of them. Throughout his 27 years as a neurologist at the Les Turner ALS Center at Northwestern Medicine, Rob has helped thousands of families affected by ALS and has demonstrated a commitment to creating individualized treatments and furthering research through more than 90 scientific publications.

It was such an incredible night at the Geraghty for UNICEF's 12th annual gala. From the interactive installations to the sexy Moroccan vide to the keynote speaker, the event drove the point home about the need to support humanity (children in particular) in crises throughout the world. The 14th Award for Excellence in Sports Journalism benefit will support the work of the Union League Boys & Girls Clubs on Thursday, April 18, at the Club. The Ring Lardner Award, that honors excellence in sports journalism, will be presented to Peggy Kusinski (NBC 5), Mike Downey and Lacy Banks (posthumously). The "Art of Caring: Compassionate with Purpose" benefit will celebrate 30 years of support by the Catholic Charities of Lake County. The event will be held on Saturday, April 6 at the Armour House Mansion and Gardens and include a gourmet dinner, dancing, music by LFC Entertainment and more! Olympian Michael Phelps will host a star-studded benefit on May 19.

Olympian Michael Phelps will host "Golf. Give. Gala," an event to benefit his Michael Phelps Foundation on Sunday, May 19, at the Hotel Baker in St. Charles, Illinois. Influential guests will include Patrick Sharp (Blackhawks), Tim Tebow (NFL), Taylor Kinney ("Chicago Fire"), Kerry Wood (Cubs), David Ross (Cubs), Ben Higgins and Colton Underwood ("The Bachelor"), Jeremy Piven (actor), Drew Scott ("Property Brothers") and more! A surprise musical performance is scheduled too! The Foundation supports water-safety, wellness, and goal-setting programs for Boys & Girls Clubs of America members and Special Olympics International athletes. The Driehaus Design Initiative will present the Driehaus Awards for Fashion Excellence runway show competition on Friday, April 26, at Chicago Vintage Motor Carriage (700 S. Desplaines St.) Produced by ZZAZZ Productions, the designers will be judged by a celebrity panel to determine the winner, who will receive a check for $7,500, the production of a look book and an apparel display at Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenue. Neiman's Wendy Krimins will select one designer to receive the Neiman Marcus Distinguished Designer Award that will include a window display at the Michigan Avenue store as well.
