All the colors of spring with bright yellow tablescapes, florals of yellow roses and snapdragons and exquisitely boxed lunches (pink and white striped boxes tied with yellow ribbons). Lunch, catered from Food for Thought, consisted of roasted chicken salad tea sandwiches, a spring greens salad and strawberry panna cotta with berries for dessert. And they love her right back, connecting with her from every ethnicity. She has friends in high, low and everything-in-between places. We all want to be her best friend. Her Instagram and Facebook posts ask

There is not a phony bone in her body and her empathy for others knows no bounds. Personally, I think she would make a great mayor. I know she says no, but I think Mayor Maria has a great ring to it. A day in the country was just what we all needed, especially when it was our first-time trip to Richardson's Adventure Farm.  Arranged by Service Club of Chicago leader Heather Spyra, in Spring Grove, IL. (909 English Prairie Rd.), the event was an opportunity for a few Service Club members to experience this adventure that included a

delightful box lunch. Heather put her own touch on everything, including a tulip shaped cookie! This was the farm's first time Tulip Festival and the turnout, despite inclement weather, was terrific. The festival ended May 9, but, believe me, this place ALWAYS has something going on!

The SC gang is all here!

When we visited, there were 300,000 tulips popping up in 30 different varieties, with many guests picking their own bouquets in a specially designated area. The venue is on a private lakefront location with food trucks scattered here and there. There was plentiful free parking, dogs were welcome on leashes and, throughout the year, they also offer live music on

but they don't accept pets, so I doubt we'll return, but it was a lovely spot situated right on the lake. The dining room has beautiful views of the sunset but, our top choice for dining is always Mars Resort–it has live piano music, a lively bar and a mean Friday night fish fry. We also love Anthony's Steakhouse and I always get a kick out of IMG_5197the grizzled old men doing the seating. They seem like they could care less if anyone was there or not but, even this was charming and I always love a good relish tray. Lake Geneva will never lose its charm for us. (On the way back, we stopped at a wonderful grocery store in Antioch, the Old Mill Creek Country Store–loaded with items we'd never seen before….wish it was closer!)

Bernie Wong (3)

Bernarda "Bernie" Wong, a champion for the Chinese American community and so many others.

The Chinese American Community has lost one of its biggest champions in Bernarda "Bernie" Wong who passed away at age 77 on April 27. She was beyond a dynamo and, when I first met her, I just couldn't believe how much love, spirit, laughter, caring and empathy for others she carried in that small frame of hers. Former Mayor Rahm Emanuel joked that "no one ever says no to Bernie" and he was so right. She was always on a mission to improve her community and

Fumee Claire Candles by Tina Weller.

Kudos to Tina Weller, besides being a glam-girl-around-town, she also is one of the most philanthropic people I know. Her most recent project, Fumee Claire Candles (clean smoke), came about following a health scare. Many candles give off a number of known toxins so I think her timing for this couldn't be better. Each product purchased will help contribute to a yearly philanthropy fund awarded to a variety of charities that make a difference to those in need. Tina and her team select agencies that provide services to women and children, the food insecure, the disabled, medically challenged, elderly, the arts, preservation and the homeless as well as education enrichment programs for the underprivileged. Not only are they beautiful and smell good but they're also good for your health and the environment. (For more info, click here!)

me in its cover feature! It's especially nice as I was given the opportunity to highlight one of my favorite nonprofits, PAWS Chicago. The feature was shot on location at the adoption center (1997 N. Clybourn), with a passel of adorable pups. It took all the will power I had not to go home with all of them! This luxury lifestyle magazine serves Chicago, NYC and LA covering the latest trends in fashion, fine dining, nightlife, arts and cultures. 100% of the net proceeds benefit The Aparecio Foundation, a nonprofit that raises funds for educational grants and programs for low-income, high potential women in public high schools. Pendry Chicago opened May 26.

It's like comparing apples and oranges but there are a lot of similarities between the newly opened Greek restaurant Avli in

IMG_6919

Venteaux restaurant inside Pendry Chicago.

Lakeshore East and the recently opened, May 26, Pendry Chicago. Located in the loop (230 N. Michigan), the Pendry is a re-imagination of the iconic 1920s era Carbide and Carbon Building. This hotel was formerly the St. James and the differences between then and now are stark. Where the St. James was dark, the Pendry is all light with sparkling brass touches. In its 364 guest rooms and suites, beautiful parquet floors were discovered under the old carpeting. In the grand ballroom, which seats 500+, an enormous window, that was previously covered over, was revealed with great views of Michigan Avenue. And on and on. As the world opens up following the pandemic, restaurants, hotels and bars seem to be following suit, offering guests a more airy feel after the heaviness of isolation. FOP ED Kristen Field and FOP board pres Michael Borders.

FOP executive director Kristen Field and Michael Borders, FOP board president.

Friends of Prentice (FOP), a non-profit organization working in partnership with Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital to fund innovative and leading-edge research benefiting the lives of women, raised nearly $600,000 at its annual fundraising benefit, themed Still Together, At Home. Due to COVID-19, this is the first year that the gala was held virtually on Saturday, October 24. The

dollars raised during the virtual gala will go towards awarding doctors and clinicians grants needed to continue their life saving research across all areas of women’s health. Mike Borders, Friends of Prentice Board President, along with Executive Director Kristen Field, Untitle99dco-hosted the event with special appearances from gala co-chairs Donna Socol and Shannon Flavin. Close to 1,000 guests tuned in from the comfort of their own homes and “hosted” a virtual or socially distanced table. This year’s gala featured one of a kind online Belinda changauctions, music from DJ Megan Taylor and the Dr. Bombay band (with my favorites, Lee Golub on drums and singer Molly Callinan) as well as a cocktail hour led by two-time James Beard award-winner and mixologist Belinda Chang. Windy City Live co-host Val Warner served as emcee for the event that

encouraged guests to ‘come together’ virtually to honor the healthcare community while raising critical funds for medical research. In addition, the frontline health heroes, clinicians and physicians who have received grants from Friends of Prentice shared highlights of their research and the positive impact the funding has had on the research conducted within their respective

healthcare heroes, but also celebrating the mission of Friends of Prentice – to provide crucial seed money to brilliant clinicians and researchers who are shaping the future of women’s health care.” Since 1983, Friends of Prentice has raised over $20M and awarded grants to more than 100 researchers and clinical programs. FOP’s annual grants initiative has funded projects in the areas of COVID-19 research, gynecologic oncology, mental health, heart disease, disparities in access to care, diabetes, HIV, uterine and pelvic medicine, genetic biomarker research, home health care outreach and more. Yo yo ma

Cellist Yo-Yo Ma performs with Civic Orchestra member Dara Hankins.

The CSO's recent "Sounds of Celebration: An Evening at Home with the CSO", a virtual event, was a blockbuster raising over $910,000 (and counting) on October 31! Musical stars from around the world reflected on what makes the CSO so special with superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma creating an evening highlight during his duet with fellow cellist Dara Hankins, a Civic Orchestra member. Chiming in from Ravenna, Italy, CSO music director Riccardo Muti said, "I'm waiting until the orchestra can be together again…My family, my music family, is the Chicago Symphony so practically, I am sort of a father without the family around." He thinks the reunion will be "like a miracle" with the "feelings of every person coming together to create something really magical."  Other contributors to the special evening included jazz pianist Herbie Hancock, trumpeter/composer Wynton Marsalis and pianist Mitsuko Uchida. The evening concluded with Robert Chen and principal cellist John Sharp performing Ravel's Sonata for Violin and Cello.

The Joffrey Ballet's Ashley Wheater, Marie B. Galvin artistic director, took us behind-the-scenes of Christopher Wheeldon's "The Nutcracker."

The Women's Board of The Joffrey Ballet hosted a virtual event, "Pulling Back the Curtain: The Nutcracker" on Friday, November 7. The 45 minute (afternoon) event was a look back at the last 5 years of Christopher Wheeldon's "The Nutcracker" and allowed viewers into a world of magic, mind-blowing Joffreycreativity and artistic genius. When the Joffrey first introduced this production in 2016, I was still in love with the old version and couldn't imagine how it could be improved upon. Boy, was I ever wrong. Wheeldon, along with an amazing team, completely

And the scenes of Wheeldon with the dancers showed you what a genius choreographer he truly is. Proceeds from this event will go toward the Joffrey’s Crisis Stabilization Fund, a $12M initiative to provide for the continued health of the organization despite the COVID-19 pandemic. I hope you will consider a donation to keep this vital arts organization alive and thriving. Thank you Joffrey for this peek behind the curtain!

New York Social Diary's Blair Sabol casting her vote in Scottsdale.

I don't know if you read the New York Social Diary but it's one of my favorites, especially writer Blair Sabol. Her wit and wisdom is always spot on and I particularly loved her latest column that pretty much nails the way some of us might be feeling now (at least it does for me). "An endless fatigue has set in that is making us feel lax even with last week’s viral resurgence. We are losing interest, so our masks are slipping below our nose and our vigilance is faltering. It’s getting old and we are getting older. Remember last March when we were all in it to win it?  Nightly we banged pots in our cities from apartment windows for all medical first responders. That seems years ago. We’ve gone from cheers to jeers. We’ve morphed from impatience to rage to exhausted disinterest." But we're trying Blair! (Read her full column here).

Robert Caravaggi poolside at Swiftys

Swifty's Robert Caravaggi poolside in Palm Beach. (NYSD photo)

I found it interesting to learn that a few of NYC's hotspot restaurants are adding new locations in Palm Beach. Swifty's, our favorite, has completely decamped to PB where it has found a second life under the watchful eye of Robert Caravaggi (lunch and dinner poolside only for now). Le Bilboquet will be opening there soon and La Goulue Palm Beach has already opened for dinner only.

Chicago Star Media will host its first Streeterville Week, a community-focused event that will spotlight and support local businesses, all of which will be offering exclusive deals. The event was created to lift community spirits, boost morale and encourage residents and visitors to shop locally. Join them (and Streeterville Weekme) for a fun-filled kick-off event at Ogden Plaza (300 E. North Water) from 12:30 to 2 pm. A series of deals will be on offer during the week at gyms, hotels and other neighborhood businesses plus special menus at restaurants. For the kick-off, Marley Kayden of "Chicago's Best" on WGN-TV will serve as emcee, which will be live-streamed on the Chicago Star Media Facebook page and open to the public. The program, designed to support local artists and brighten this normally gray area of Streeterville, features rotating appearances from Chicago performers and street musicians, including actor Vikram Konkimalla — known for his role as Tiny Tim in The Goodman Theatre's "A Christmas Carol "— and Andrew David, a street performer whose powerful cover of “Hallelujah” in Chicago’s empty streets went viral this spring. To ensure the safety of attendees and performers during the walk-by event, masks are required, signs indicating social distancing will be placed in front of performers. Each performer will display a QR code to receive tips from passersby. Participating Streeterville Week restaurants will include Beatrix Market, Tallboy Taco, Pinstripes, Cupitol Coffee & Eatery, Labriola, Pinched on the River, Robert’s Pizza and Dough Company, Rosebud Steakhouse, Saigon Sisters and Yolk, among others. A complete list of businesses and offers can be found online here. Chicago Star Media, which publishes Streeterville News, New Eastside News and West Loop News, is dedicated to providing a positive, informative and community-building presence in the neighborhoods it serves.

PfizerIf reports are true that Pfizer has found a vaccine for Covid (that will be ready by the end of the month?!), our collective prayers have been answered! I know we probably won't go back to "normal." Quite frankly, I'm not even sure what this means anymore. I do miss all of our in-person events, that's a given, but I also miss the little things like lingering in bookstores (when I could find one) or spending hours wandering around the make-up section in a department store and actually TRYING THINGS ON. All the little things that I used to love to do seems like it happened in another lifetime, like living in the "Matrix." Wearing a mask takes away any joy anyway because, for some reason, when I'm

wearing one I can't see, hear or think. I know people are edgy now and, in some cases, aimless not knowing what's going to happen next. Many are looking for anything to do just to keep busy…my friends Bonnie Spurlock and Judy Tullman find joy volunteering at PAWS Chicago. Now THAT is something truly

Just for fun…..

worthwhile. I'm keeping busy writing The Blog (thanks to all my new subscribers too!), writing for Chicago Now and pondering some possibilities. I had a blast hosting the Apparel Industry Board Foundation's Rev Up event and would like to do more of that. I'd also like to discuss my events and what's going on in Chicago on some media outlets. I'm looking forward to a new venture with Tracey Tarantino DiBuono and videographer Troy Mairs that will be fun and fulfilling. In every case, I will continue to be a voice for Chicago, its charities, its happenings and whatever else is exciting and makes our city shine. Yes, despite Covid, the future is looking very bright. I can't wait to see what's around the next corner, hopefully a cure!

Stay safe and sane out there!

Love,

Candace

Gene Siskel Film Center Renaissance Award recipient, filmmaker Jon Favreau.

The Gene Siskel Film Center is repeatedly turning Chicago into the Hollywood of the Midwest and did so again on Saturday, June 15, for "Marvel, Movies and More: Honoring Jon Favreau in Conversation with Robert Downey Jr." To

say it was a love fest is an understatement. It was more like being a fly on the wall as two dear friends and collaborators took a walk down memory lane. Downey conducted an hour-long Q & A with Favreau that was the centerpiece of the gala that was co-chaired by Roopa Weber and Anita Liskey at the Four Seasons Chicago. The fun, however, began on the Red

Carpet. Each media outlet was instructed to ask each star only two questions. WGN's Dean Richards was the first in line and, if he only asked two questions, they must've

been really, really long ones, however, both stars still had that charismatic sense of humor by the time they got to me. Kristan Lieb, my Tribune photog that night, videotaped the convo using my Iphone. Well, as soon as Downey saw Chuck's photo on the Iphone case, the interview went sideways. (See the merriment here!) The two mega stars are definitely each other's biggest fans. Downey has been directed by Favreau in many films and they have also worked together as actors so they had much to discuss when they finally mounted the stage during

dinner in the ballroom. They both love Chicago and said, since they landed, it's been a "Taste of Chicago and we're bonding over food." Favreau discussed getting his start here in Chicago, even though he's originally from NY. He became eligible for his guild cards while acting at Second City and said, "Chicago remembers its own, it's so supportive." During my brief discussion with the stars, Favreau said this of their "Iron Man" collaboration, "We figured out what the movie would be based on you (nodding to Downey) being in it. My earliest memory was just you having complete confidence looking at me and me knowing that if I can work with this guy, I knew it could be a great movie. That was the beginning of both of our journeys." Jean de St. Aubin, GSFC executive director, welcomed guests and introduced Ellen Sandor, GSFC board chair, calling her the

"driving force behind the Film Center." Video tributes poured in from Favreau's friends Albert Brooks, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Holland and Scarlett Johansson. Brooks broke the crowd up during his clip when he said he had hoped to be asked to voice a character in Favreau's upcoming "Lion King" but

that "all the Jewish animals were already taken." Barbara Scharres, GSFC director of programming, introduced Jon as a "producer, director, writer and super hero-maker extraordinaire."  The place was packed with 300 fans and supporters and you could hear a pin drop during the conversation. Downey was very animated, coming into the audience several times, especially to clarify a point with his darling, Schaumburg-born wife Susan. The couple are both on the Film Center's advisory board and have contributed greatly in securing talent like Favreau for Renaissance Award honors. Past honorees have included Nicole Kidman, George Lucas (who was interviewed by Favreau in 2009), Jamie Foxx, Reese Witherspoon, Morgan Freeman, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Ethan Hawke, Michael Mann and

Downey himself in 2010. During the interview, Downey said to Favreau, "Your whole career, looking back on it now, has been about inclusion and diversity, underdog heroes and overcoming obstacles." Favreau said he had been inspired by Walt Disney who combined cutting edge technology with a great story. He said George

Lucas told him, "Your main audience is kids coming of age. You're teaching them how to succeed in this journey of life without having to make the mistakes themselves." This is the message Lucas based his Star Wars franchise on too. At the end of the 6-15b19 (184)@Mila Samokhinaconversation, Downey asked Favreau to join the Film Center board to which he readily agreed. Sandor and Elissa Tenny, president of the School of the Art Institute Chicago) presented Favreau with the Renaissance Award. He said, "I feel very grateful that stuff that's come out of my imagination has become a part of your lives." Congrats to all and especially to the Film Center, that raised $380,000 to support programming and outreach. (Photos by MILA SAMOKHINA)

Marsha Brenner

Marsha Brenner

I was so sad to learn of the passing of Marsha Brenner, the long-time executive director of the Apparel Industry Board. We had lunch together the week before with her "right arm," Ambar Campos. She was so enthusiastic about upcoming plans that it was very hard to believe that she passed away so soon after. During lunch, she talked about how lucky she was to have found Ambar to help her out as she advocated for Chicago designers. Marsha was always a tough little cookie who spoke her mind. I won't lie when I say we had our run-ins but I always admired her tenacity and love for Chicago fashion. She will be missed by all who knew her and especially by the designers whose lives she touched. It was a private service with family requesting donations be made to the COPD Foundation.

after we did a little research, we decided to experience it for ourselves on a recent trip to NYC. The program helps charities raise money using live auction packages of memorable vacation experiences. They include beach, city, mountain and international accommodations–everything from an estate on Lake Como to a private island in Belize and so much more! There's a reasonable reserve for the packages but

there's no obligation if it doesn't sell. (You can see how it works here.) We chose the NYC package and it was everything they had promised and more–friendly greeters, exquisite accommodations in a beautiful apartment and a follow-up to make sure you were satisfied. I love this concept and am very familiar with how hard it is to find/offer unique live auction prizes for

Adam Capes, Getaway2Give president/chief idea officer, founded the company in 2012 and "hopes to continue to help more charities and schools increase their fundraising capabilities." On our first night, we saw King Kong at the Broadway Theatre. I have no words to describe how fabulous and awe-inspiring it was. The mechanical gorilla has to be the 8th wonder of the world! The music was good but it was truly all about the ape. My mouth stayed open for the entire 2 hours and 15 minutes. (A must-see if you can). Afterwards, we had dinner at Raoul's, a

(And, of course, we had to take a sneaky photo for posterity! Lol!). The next day, we couldn't wait to see the CAMP exhibit at the Met. It did not disappoint. There are more than 250 objects dating from the 17th century to the present. The exhibit is inspired

Close to 400 guests attended the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) Midwest Region’s 2019 Spirit of Courage Benefit dinner at the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago recently. The Center bestowed its highest honor, the Humanitarian Laureate Award, on Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (2017 – 2019), for her courage and compassion in protecting global human rights and the state of Israel. Ms. Haley and Mary Hart, SWC Trustee and TV personality, had an inspiring conversation on Haley’s upbringing in an Indian immigrant family and the struggle of being an “other” in American society. Haley shared how this experience made her stronger and to take true pride in being an American. Ms. Haley also discussed the current negative political atmosphere and articulated that while it’s bad, we should

Nan Giordano and Gus Giordano --Nan Giordano Day June 9

The late Gus Giordano and daughter Nan Giordano both have days dedicated to them in Chicago!

Like father, like daughter! Congrats to the much loved artistic director of Giordano Dance Chicago, Nan Giordano! Former Mayor Emanuel designated Sunday, June 9 as NAN GIORDANO DAY in Chicago! Her late father, Gus Giordano, founder of the GDC, also has a day, April 25. Awwwww!

The weather we've all been waiting for appears to have arrived! Thank goodness as we have all sorts of fun outdoor activities we're anxious to pursue like checking out all of the city's wonderful street festivals! (See list here!)

Have a great summer!

Love,

Candace
