Dearest blog readers, This month, Candid Candace celebrates 13 years of delivering the best that Chicago has to offer. Thank you for supporting me since 2008! I feel the best is yet to come for all of us. Even though the past year has been one hot mess, I see great change on the horizon. For friends who have asked if they should consider leaving town, I say no, give it another chance. Even though crime is off the charts, I think we can at least celebrate being together again, planning weddings, seeing family and friends and smothering them with hugs and kisses. Since most of us are vaccinated, we can truly celebrate summer in the city with a sense of freedom that is palpable after our 15 months of hibernation, which already seems like a thing of the past. You can feel it in every corner of the city as people stretch their wings to fly again. Here's to soaring to great new heights together, FINALLY, and also to a very memorable, fun-filled fall.

The Service Club of Chicago hosted its annual Day on the Terrace fashion show/fundraiser Monday, August 2 at The Geraghty (2520 S. Hoyne). The event, this year themed "Here Comes the Sun," is always a labor of love that culminates after a long year of planning. The committee is always so supportive as is the Service Club's vibrant Auxiliary Board who planned a first-time after-party for this year's event (more on this later). The fundraiser was co-chaired by Jean Antoniou, Tracey Tarantino DiBuono and Sharyl Mackey with the leading sponsors and event producers being The Geraghty, Kehoe Designs, Black Oak Technical Productions and, of course, the one
and only Tom Kehoe (who always makes EVERY EVENT look so good!) The fashion show, as always, was expertly produced by ZZAZZ Productions and, so far, is
the largest runway presentation in the city. Nearly 300 attendees enjoyed a first look at fall fashion from retailers and designers that included Elda de la Rosa Couture, Sylwia Designs, Lauren Lein, Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenue (the finale segment), Anne Fontaine, Ted Baker, CRAM Fashion, Max Mara, alice + olivia, Contessa Bottega, Mira Couture, Maximilian Chicago, Peter Millar, Penny's from Heaven (kids) and St. John. For two years now, the Charles Ifergan
Salon and his team (love you Phillippe!) have donated their services for the event along with Torie Conn who provided beautiful makeup again for the
models. This was the first time DOT was held at the Geraghty and I just loved it, plenty of parking, right off the expressway and, of course, Tom always goes all out to make the events a success. I loved seeing all of these philanthropic ladies together again and thoroughly enjoyed my views from backstage of this incredible, 45-minute long fashion show. I have to say, it was really one of my favorites….all of the women
(and men) looked so chic in their outfits….Service Club president Sherrill Bodine offered welcoming remarks before the show began.
Some of the standouts (in my humble opinion) included Liz Teasley, wearing a dramatic red evening gown by Sylwia Designs; Mary Lasky and Darby Hills toasting with bedazzled go-cups as they walked together down the runway; Israel Idonije wearing Peter Millar (and a killer smile); NBC Chicago co-hosts Matt Rodrigues and
Cortney Hall in beautiful Elda de la Rosa Couture; WBBM Radio's Lisa Fielding in a stylish Maximilian fur poncho; Micah Materre, live auction and open call host and WGN-TV anchor, wearing a stunning, off-the-shoulder purple, figure-hugging Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenue gown;
Rhonda Liesenfelt in a super-chic red coat/pants ensemble from Contessa Bottega; Alex Antoniou (who got lucky twice) wearing a dramatic black and white Anne Fontaine flowing dress as well as an elegant royal blue evening gown from Mira Couture; Laura Schwartz Santiago and Alayna Crenshaw in beautiful Mira Couture evening dresses; Greg Hyder wearing a blue jacket with
black and white striped pants from CRAM that looked surprisingly fabulous together; Tina Weller in a fabulous
green, flowing evening gown from alice+olivia and Elaine Hyde (first time runway model and publisher/editor Chicago Star, the event's proud media sponsor) wearing a glamorous high-low, deep blue dress by Elda de la Rosa Couture. Really, everyone looked great but I really loved these looks and thought they were standouts! A wonderful luncheon was presented by J&L
Catering which nicely satisfied the crowd's need for fuel. Attendees also enjoyed a silent auction during the cocktail portion of the afternoon as well as a raffle featuring exclusive items donated by retailers and supporters. Myra Reilly (with support from Kevin Sullivan)
put together a spectacular Look Book, which was handed out to every guest. The book included all the models' photos plus ads purchased by supporters, with many pages dedicated to the late, great Hazel Barr. For the first time, the SC Auxiliary Board planned a fun-filled after-party which was held on the premises. Partygoers kicked off their heels and slipped
into flip-flops, enjoyed cocktails and colorful pool toys that came in handy for photo props. A record $200,000 was raised which will support the organization's Philanthropic Grant Program. And, unlike

As you all probably know, I owe a great deal to Playboy and Hugh Hefner, who literally brought me to Chicago and ultimately, to all of you. I am forever grateful and indebted to
this amazing man who I still miss and always will. I 
welcome any chance to revisit my Playboy family and former Bunny Diana Petersen made it happen for so many of us recently, in very grand style. Nearly 300 Bunnies from around the world convened in Chicago for the International Playboy Bunny Reunion which also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the first Playboy Club. Diana had planned a 4-day long series of events that included a Guys & Dolls party with a Gatsby
theme, comedy club visit, jazz brunch, Lake Michigan
fireworks cruise and brunch at the popular Rosebud Restaurant. The celebration culminated with a dressy dinner at the Drake Hotel on Sunday. I reconnected with Bunnies I hadn't seen in nearly 50 years. I had worked first at the St. Louis Playboy Club in 1973 with friends that included Marsha Callender, Patti McGuire Connors, 
Janis Schmitt, Rhetta Penninger and so many more. I saw a few of these St. Louis Bunnies here in Chicago. From my Chicago Playboy Club days, there was a better representation that 
included Judi Kalata Altiere, Angie Chester, Cindy Fossen Russell, Nancy Perry, Susan Stone, Candy Hockenberry, Eddie Cook, Anna D'Agata, Cheryl Carioscia, Rita……and others. The first of these events was a meet-and-greet which took place at the Knickerbocker Hotel. As you may or may not know, this was the location of the second Playboy Club following the original one at 116 E. Walton. Its final incarnation in Chicago was in Lincoln Park (in the old Four
Torches building). To be honest, I was hesitant to go. None of us are getting any younger and I really loved remembering everyone the way they were, darling faces and figures in a variety of colorful, iconic Bunny costumes 
but my curiosity got the better of me and off I went. THANK GOODNESS! I felt like I'd gone home again. Yes, we were all a little older but I could still see those cute faces and dazzling personalities that got them hired at the Clubs in the first place and I was back in the "hutch" with my friends again. Organizer Diana Peterson did a great job, even offering Playboy memorabilia for sale, many items she had created herself, like pillows with the girls' Bunny photos, sparkling rhinestone Bunny necklaces, cuff-links, costume cuffs,
earrings, pins, masks and even Bunny ears of every stripe and color. She had also created "standees" of the
girls' Bunny photos that were scattered throughout the room and hanging from banners from the second floor mezzanine railing. We were ensconced in all things Playboy and I couldn't have loved it more. (A friend of mine, Shelley Rosen, Luxe Bloom, even created a standing arrangement of specially treated roses with the Playboy logo which was a popular photo opp.) These ladies
were the sorority I never had and, as an only child, also 
the sisters I never had. The final event of the weekend took place in the elegant Gold Coast Room at the Drake and boy oh boy, it was so expertly planned right down to the magnificent floral arrangements on the tables to the giant black Playboy bunny logo statue that served as the focal point of the cocktail reception. An amazing array of rare Playboy memorabilia was on display in a silent auction with the live auction featuring two original Bunny costumes. Even Christie Hefner attended and delivered such a heartfelt speech. (Watch it here). The ladies danced and mingled throughout the magical evening. Thanks, as always Hef, for giving me a forever family. And thanks to you Diana Peterson for making it all possible!

PAWS Chicago hosted a joyous day in the country on July 31 for this year's (sort-of) re-imagined Beach Party. Paula
and Peter Fasseas generously underwrote an event at their beautiful farm in Three Oaks, Michigan. The weather gods were definitely smiling on us this day because it was one of the finest days of the entire season! The PAWS support team is one of the best of all the nonprofits and they executed a memorable day
that included a little petting "zoo" complete with a miniature cow, pony rides, a farm stand (which was thoughtfully supplied with bags for guests to take their
pick), a delicious buffet from Inspired Catering (Karen Stefani), live music, a DJ and more. Guests could also tour the retreat space on the property where long-term dogs who need a break can go to relax. A program included remarks by emcee/supporter Lisa Dent, founder Paula and moi (proud event chair). I had the pleasure of introducing Una, a lively
little dog who a finder saw THROWN OFF THE BACK OF A TRUCK! Thankfully, she was grabbed and brought safely to PAWS where she is now available for adoption. Another little dog, Bonnie, was born with only two legs but the PAWS people weren't about to let her slip away. She is now resting
safely and comfortably with star foster/board member Angie DeMars until she has some surgery and gets a little mobility cart. I've been involved with this amazing organization for the last 20 years and have watched them grow and Grow and GROW until they are now one of the highest rated nonprofits on Charity Navigator. Since PAWS' founding in 1997, Chicago has seen a 91% decrease in the number of homeless pets killed and, last year, PAWS found forever homes for over 4,000 dogs and cats. Kudos to all who support this great rescue and to its founders, Paula and her daughter Alexis.

Hinsdale Junior Woman’s Club (HJWC) hosted a summer fundraiser at the home of Dr. Jeffrey and Tina Weller recently. The Ibiza Nights, Neon Lights event raised over $32,000
and was attended by 150 HJWC members and guests.
Attendees were transported to exotic Ibiza and treated to an outdoor club-like atmosphere around the host homes’ pool. Dressed in white with neon accents, party-goers enjoyed appetizers from Hinsdale area restaurants, drinks, dancing, and a raffle. Funds raised though the evening's tickets sales and raffles will support nonprofit grants which help fund tangible items for deserving Chicagoland nonprofits. (Organizations can apply for grants up to $50,000 in value). Along with the Wellers, the event was hosted by Lauren and Brendan Kavanaugh, Michelle and Jim Riley, Julie Langdon and Mike Dudek, Sylvia and
Sabastian Kos, Amanda and Paul Mancini, Jeni and Eric Graham, Jill and Dr. Nick Angelopoulos, Ann and Jonathan Lockhart, Jennifer and Garrett Anderson, and Katie and PJ Beuke. The
event was sponsored by Parisa London and Sam Sharp of Guaranteed Rate along with food sponsors Nabuki, Eddie Merlot, Fuller House Bar, Altamura and Walkers. The HJWC was founded in 1949, making this their 72nd year. Over the last six years, HJWC has raised over $1 million for under-served organizations. In 2018, HJWC moved to a yearly grant funding model to support more organizations in need and in 2020-2021, HJWC raised more than $300,000 that funded grants to 27 nonprofit organizations. Hosted by the Near South Planning Board, The Harold Washington Literary Award Gala will celebrate its 31st anniversary on Friday, September 10. The Award Gala
recognizes diverse and stimulating authors who address issues of contemporary life. Each spring, since 1989, they have hosted a literary gala to bestow this prestigious award on a deserving writer with this year's honoree being Ta-Nehisi Coates. Past winners have included Rabih Alameddine, Rita Dove, Barbara Ehrenreich and Scott Turow. The gala is the Library's major annual fundraising event, with proceeds benefiting its Authors in the Schools program. (Details here)

The Chicago International Film Festival, North America's longest running, juried film fest, will present "Lights, Camera, CHICAGO" on Monday, September 13 at Bridge 410, an event space at 410 N. Paulina. The themed event will feature tastings from some of the city's most iconic restaurants and vendors (ELI'S CHEESECAKE!) and include live music, a silent auction, films, food trucks and more. For the second time, the much loved Tufano's Vernon Park Tap was featured on Guy Fieri's "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" show on the Food Network. (Watch segment here). Owner Joey DiBuono and his family are so
charming, on and off camera, that I think they need their own show! Here's the back-story on this great Italian restaurant located at 1073 W. Vernon Park Place. The restaurant was established in 1930 by Joseph DiBuono and his wife Teresa Tufano. In 1971,
Sam the “DA” DiBuono took over the restaurant. He worked side by side with his mother. In 1980, Joe DiBuono began running the restaurant. He
had the best cooks in the world helping him make the homemade dishes that included his mother Marie, his Aunt Rose Alecia, his other Aunt Antoinette Tufano and his grandmother, Teresa. Teresa worked in the restaurant until she was 90 years old. Now Joe has help from his sisters and daughters who will help him continue to carry on his family's traditions. In 2008, Tufano’s received the American Classics Award from the James Beard Foundation. The restaurant is still nestled in the heart of little Italy in Chicago. The Service Club of Chicago established The Diamond Circle three years ago as an opportunity to recognize
its major Member donors. And, on July 20, in celebration of these outstanding members, Steak 48 rolled out its red carpet at a luxurious luncheon organized with the support of Kathleen Henson, her fabulous Agency H5 and Steak 48's Oliver Badgio. SC president Sherrill Bodine welcomed
everyone to the party,“Please know that when you sponsor an event, buy tickets, raffle tickets, auction items or answer any
one of our myriad calls for help, you are making a difference to schools, hospitals, museums and so much more." The SC, their friends and supporters work hard all year long to raise funds for their Philanthropic Grant Program and this afternoon celebrated their service. The Vice-Presidents of Development, Cheryl Coleman and Bobbi Panter, helped organize this joyous event. Everyone agreed, Steak 48 was the “icing on the cake”!

Who knew you could fish off the Riverwalk? Chicago Park District's FREE "Fishing at the Jetty" program provides fishing opportunities, weekly afternoon fishing clinics and interactive activities for everyone! Fishing rods, bait and all the supplies needed for a big catch are provided. Never tried fishing before? The Jetty is the perfect place to give it a try and especially a great place to make memories with the kiddies! The Chicago Park District will “hook” you up with guided instruction, tips and more. Matt Renfree, senior program specialist, 
says, "Nearly everybody catches fish. Most days, we are at 80 or 90 fish. The first weekend we had 484 people out.” The program, on the west end of “The Jetty: Floating Gardens,” part of the 
Riverwalk between Wells and Franklin streets, runs Thursdays and Fridays from noon-6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm, now through August 15 and again from August 21 to September 25. The program teaches fish and fishing on the Chicago River and includes species such as bluegill and gobies, sunfish, crappie, large and small mouth bass, common carp and channel catfish. Fish are released, except for gobies, which are put in clear plastic bins to become a teaching tool about invasive species. So far, the rarest fish captured has been an American eel. Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas revisited her Greek homeland recently. And, along with pleasure, she made some serious inroads representing Chicago and sharing the inner workings of her well-oiled Cook
County Treasurer's Office. The Treasurer spoke before the World Hellenic Inter-Parliamentary Association in the Greek Parliament in Athens. Countries from around the world have invited her to speak about the success she's had in her office and how they can go about re-creating it in their own countries. In addition, she has been invited to conduct an exciting seminar twice a year (May and
September) in the Athenian Agora, where philosophers like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle held court. Pappas
would lead seminars attended by CEO's and other world leaders from 15 different global organizations which will last for five days and be designed to stimulate discussion on the kinds of thorny issues leaders face today. These seminars would highlight how crucial Ancient Greece was to the formation of modern society and how it is the birthplace of democracy. Besides being a Chicago treasure, Maria is also a world-recognized psychological counselor, political reformer and innovator. Watch her inspiring speech below:

Congrats to Noreen Heron and her Heron Agency for
executing a memorable grand opening party for The Forester, a brand new Hyatt hotel that's opened in Lake Forest at 200 N. Field Drive. There were so many exciting visuals, especially from Stage Factor. "Trees" walking on vine covered stilts, flower-adorned serving characters, music, drinks, live s'mores-making demos, and so much more! Kudos, as always, Noreen!

Lounge (4713 N. Broadway), celebrated his 80th birthday at Park West on July 27. The room was packed with friends, fans and well-wishers who all came together to honor this legend in the LGBTQ+ community (and beyond). The evening, produced as always by the talented Harrison McEldowney, included tribute performances by Maya Douglas, Tommie Ross, Dana Douglas, Angel Saez, Claire Chystalle, Stasha Sanchez, and so many more. The event closed with a performance by Dina Jacobs. Jim was teary-eyed throughout the night and mingled with every guest during the course of the evening. Seen at the event, among a crowd of about 200, was Howard and Bunnie Frum, longtime friends and supporters.

Welcome to fall! I hope you have spectacular plans with family and friends and that you're looking forward to all this brand new season has to offer. I can't wait to start
clambering through pumpkin pop-ups (hello Bengsten's, I'm comin' for you!), visit the Wickwood Inn in Saugatuck (making plans soon) and redo my tired looking summer patio with some fabulous fall colors. I'm also definitely ready for sweaters. Anyway, thanks for coming back and checking out Candid Candace!
