As with all events this year that have been forced to go virtual, PAWS Chicago's Fur Ball was no exception. But, for me, this was a tough one as there really is no substitute for rubbing cold little noses with all the rescues at this annual black-tie event at the Drake Hotel. But, as

always, this fabulous nonprofit managed to create joy and raise big $$$ even if it was only online. individual donors. On this night, the organization's donors were out in full force, thankfully. The evening was emceed by long-time PAWS supporter/radio personality Lisa Dent (who owns FIVE

They were fussing with his little tuxedo and then fretting over the fact that Bruce forgot to brush his (the dog's!) teeth. Phillip reminded him how important this was since Charlie was going to meet fellow co-chair Tinsley Mortimer's dogs Strawberry and Shortcake. In another

to Anne Marie and Murray Peretz's house where Murray shared that it was a PAWS pup (introduced to them by PAWS' friends Judy and Howard Tullman) that got them both involved. There was also a visit to the home of Erica Kelly and her family in Lakeview. Goodman conducted a "live auction" via video that turned out really well. I had no idea how he planned to do this but it was a great success and created almost as much excitement as an in-person event. Items included a foodie package for 10 in your home from Chef Doug Psaltis (RPM) that sold for $9K. Always a popular auction item, the opportunity to have your pet appear on the cover of the PAWS desk calendar, sold for $10K and a Rocky Mountain weeklong vacation for

PAWS Animal Rescue Transport van sold for $12K; a pair of A. Marek Fine Jewelry diamond earrings sold for $5K and a vintage 1970 Landrover Defender 90 (canvas top) sold for $45K! The last prize, a Tuscan villa for 10 for a week sold for $19K and included the chance to create your own wine at a local winery. The successful, and entertaining evening, concluded with a Fund-a-Need. Paula said, "Back in 1997, Chicago's stray problem was terrible. horrified and knew there had to be a better way. That's how PAWS got started." The stats tell the "tail": Last year– 5,134 pets were euthanized (down from 42,561 before PAWS existed);  PAWS has a 97.9% save rate; 5,217 pets were adopted; 15,174 spray-neuter surgeries were performed and volunteers put in 149,507 hours. What's next? PAWS is planning a spay/neuter clinic on the south side of Chicago, creating spay/neuter outposts in other U.S. cities of need and elevating the universal care of dogs and cats. (On another note, have you seen the PAWS Party Bus around town, blasting the song "Who Let the Dogs Out?"? …..They're hoping to raise $100,000, to A) stop the song (lol!) and B) support the shelter and its mission. Hosts

One Tail at a Time's Houndstooth at Home event co-hosts Elliott Bambrough (WGN-TV) and Heather Owen, OTAT founder/ED.

There were a LOT of grab-a-hankie moments during One Tail at a Time's first virtual Houndstooth at Home event on November 13. The evening was hosted by executive director Heather Owen and Elliott Bambrough (of WGN-TV) and featured adopted and adoptable dogs, their inspiring stories, a raffle, a silent auction and a fun game to cap off the paws-itively fabulous night! The opening video segments showcased happy dogs with their

band of saviors, that included Amber Serverence (ISO dog coordinator), traveled to Chicago Animal Care & Control to rescue 5 dogs. I have no idea how they can ever choose what dogs to save, it's a job I sure couldn't handle, but they seem to know instinctively which ones would make good pets. Then the evening moved onto Anna Johnson, foster program director, handling a transport of 7 dogs from the West Memphis Animal Services, one of OTAT's southern partners. These dogs all had urgent

IMG_8020

The story of Pork Bun and Potato Puff moved me to tears. (Those names, LOL!)

Potato Puff were found as strays in the south. They'd been attacked by other dogs and were both full of bite wounds. When they ended up at the shelter, they were terrified, naturally. Then they found their way to OTAT where they've learned how to be happy puppies again and will be ready for adoption soon. Heather talked about a new initiative that OTAT has implemented to rescue

She was riddled with bird shot, but thanks to the care she received at OTAT, she is now ready for adoption! Heather thanked her staff ("dream team all the way"), the board, volunteers, adopters and fosters old and new (3000+!!!!). Last year, the nonprofit saved 975 animals and this year, drum roll please, OTAT rescued 1,568 homeless pets! The evening

Fa La La mask by Taylor & Co. Events, custom order, $35.

As anyone who knows me knows, my love of all things Christmas borders on obsession. So, this season (especially), when we all "need a little Christmas," I've been scouting out my favorite spots around town to share with you. I've decided on 5 that are at the top of my list. See below:

1) Taylor & Company's Fa-La-La Holiday Pop-Up Experience–Beginning December 1 and

IMG_8201

Derrick Taylor teaches guest the fine art of wreath-making.

running through Christmas Eve, event designer Derrick Taylor has recreated the North Pole at 2819 N. Montrose. Fa La La is a pop-up experience (socially distanced, of course) with something fun for the whole family. Santa will be granting wishes on December 6 and 13, with professional digital memories included. Wreath-making classes, a showroom filled with snow globes, custom Christmas ornaments and more (all by Illinois craftsmen) will be offered too. Since 1947, Taylor & Co. has been a family business specializing in event planning, floral design, gifts, holiday decor and more. (See my first Candid Candace TV collaboration below of Fa-La-La with Troy Mairs, Tracey DiBuono and Elizabeth McNally–are you a subscriber?)

2) "Eleanor's Very Merry Christmas, the Musical"First the book and now the heartfelt

musical! Written by Chicagoan Denise McGowan Tracy, this charming Christmas story is appealing to the young and the young-at-heart and will is streaming now through December 27. It's the tale of a toy who's "left behind" and her journey to find happiness. A "Party in a Box" is available to enhance the experience with a copy of the book, holiday party hats, an Eleanor ornament, a reindeer ring toss game and more!

Event designer Tom Kehoe introduces his first holiday shop pop-ups.

Event designer/planner Tom Kehoe.

3) ) The Holiday Shoppe–This festive jewel box is event design guru Tom Kehoe's first holiday shop and it's filled to the brim with wreaths, garlands, trees, centerpieces, ornaments and more at the corner of Superior and Rush Streets (108 E. Superior). Other pop-up locations include The Park at Lakeshore East (333 E Benton Place), Ranalli's in Lincoln Park (1925 N. Lincoln) and Federales in the West Loop (180 N. Morgan).

4) Santa Baby Christmas Bar  –Indoor/outdoor over-the-top Christmas decor with three levels of gram-worthy experiences. Deuce's Major League Bar, renamed "Santa Baby" for the holidays, is located at 3505 N. Clark and will put any Grinch in the holiday spirit. (Reservations only now through mid-January) (Please enjoy my video tour below with Alex Morales, event designer from Smartmouth Designs, and GM Jasper Robinson).

5) Mangel Florist–You wouldn't think of a hotel shop as being something very special but Mangel's is an exception and definitely worth a visit. Besides exquisite floral arrangements, the store has a delightful selection of holiday decor and gifts arranged as if by Mrs. Claus DSC05652herself. This year, the store and the hotel it lives in, The Drake, are celebrating their 100th anniversaries!

IMG_7725

Botanic Garden's Lightscape, a sellout in its 2nd year!

And I would've definitely included the Chicago Botanic Garden's Lightscape on this list but, for the second year in a row, the event sold out before it was even open!  The Botanic's Woman's Board hosted an exclusive first look at Lightscape on November 12. This dramatic, holiday light show installation attracted a socially distanced crowd that meandered along a mile-long, illuminated trail while enjoying hot bites and cocktails. Artistic installations included the popular Cathedral of Light, a fire garden, a colorful enchanted forest, a neon lakeside trail, illuminated waterfalls and so much more. If you don't already have tickets, enjoy a sneak peek here!

Her recent book, "Aim High: How to Style Your Life and Achieve Your Goals" will be a topic very worthy of discussion for ALL of us! Details here!

The Chicago Public Library Foundation Awards will be held Libraryvirtually this year on December 9 at 6:30 pm (CST). In the past, this ginormous event was held at the UIC Pavilion with over 1000 people in attendance. Derrick Taylor (and elves not shown) with Michelle Durpetti and Collin Pierson for a Christmas Decor Ambush.

With all of the sadness surrounding our restaurant community now, here's a happy story. It was a Christmas

Ambush by Derrick Taylor and his band of elves at Gene & Georgetti's on November 24. They surprised Michelle Durpetti and Collin Pierson with a holiday makeover for the restaurant, decorating G & G's brand new tent and windows with garlands, wreaths and greenery donated by City Grange! Friends helping friends–in good times and bad–now THAT is a story worth telling.

Even though this hasn't been an ideal year, there is still much to Thanksgiving saying be thankful for. I hope you and your families were able to celebrate in whatever way was safest for you. I'm thankful for: Good health (for Chuck and our loved ones); to have so many wonderful friends who are there when I need them; that so many nonprofits didn't suffer as badly as they feared with their virtual events; that we have food on the table and a roof on our heads….And lastly, I'm so grateful that this election is over and for YOU.

Love, as always,

GALAS GOING VIRTUAL: HOW SHAKESPEARE THEATRE COMPANY CELEBRATED THE BARD’S BIRTHDAY IN STYLE ONLINE

IMG_7307

Sign seen on Covid car ride. We believe.

Welcome back for my second blog under covid. Like everyone else in the world, I feel like this thing has me by the throat. I understand the frustration of people trying to gain back some freedom. In the beginning, believe it or not, I thought this was sort of fun–at least I had an excuse to stay home with Chuck and Rooney. I even got in some very creative cooking, thanks to Chef Art Smith and his great Insta videos. The stay-at-home order was like having permission to take a staycation. Little did I, or anyone else,

and others) it would cost. I understand the safety precautions we all need to take but I'm definitely ready to get back to work, get out of the house and have a reason to get dressed and earn a paycheck again. Zoom meetings are not for me. I'm a Gemini, I need social interaction like I need air to breathe. I know this will end but then what? What will the new normal look like? We all see how the world changed following 9/11. I

How will I handle not getting a hug from Kathy Piccone at Gibson's and how sad would it be not to be able to sit at Tufano's with Joey DiBuono or at the bar at Pizano's with Brian shooting the breeze. Times will change but I pray memories like these will return for us all, and soon.

Fundraising-organizations-nonprofit-charityOur fabulous gala-going days have been cut short too, for now. Thank you Rona. However, that doesn't mean nonprofits aren't getting creative with their fundraising, ergo virtual galas! Now, we all know this isn't nearly as gratifying as rubbing shoulders with friends, comparing new outfits or toasting a successful night, but it is a vital effort for the organizations to stay afloat and keep revenue streams open. I've come to realize that if supporters have their heart set on your nonprofit, they will find a way to help and this gives them a perfect opportunity during this crisis. Case in point, I recently "attended/watched" Chicago Shakespeare Theatre's online event, "Toast to Shakespeare's Birthday." It's lucky for them that they have such a deep arsenal of performing and creative talent, which helped move along the 1/2 hour free celebration. It was joyous and thoughtfully produced with nearly 2000 households tuning in and several thousand more on-demand. The organization was really ahead of the game though as they've been producing "tons" of online content as part of their ongoing Shakes@Home initiative. The recent birthday celebration for the bard was the first virtual event of this kind that they have produced. The event was part of its Brave New World campaign which brought in more than $10,000 in new and first time gifts toward the $900,000 raised to date. Read details below:

Shakespeare Theater Company's virtual gala was a great success!

Chicago Shakespeare Theater presented a one-night-only streaming event Toast to Shakespeare’s Birthday! on April 23. On the occasion of the Bard’s 456th birthday, a line-up of special guests—including the Queens of SIX on Broadway, Chicago Theater legend Larry Yando, hip-hop sensations the Q Brothers Collective, actor/author John Tufts, as well as T.R. SIX Queens—Adrianna Hicks, Andrea Macasaet, Abby Mueller, Brittney Mack, Samantha Pauly, and Anna Uzele—who headlined the North American Premiere production of the hit show at Chicago Shakespeare in Spring 2019 and now await their return to the Broadway stage. Legendary Chicago theater actor Larry Yando joined online to discuss Shakespeare after appearing onstage in some of the Bard’s most storied roles. The evening also featured Chicago hip hop sensations, the Q Brothers Collective – GQ, JQ, Jax and Pos, who have created award-winning “ad-rap-tations” of Shakespeare including Othello: The Remix. The virtual event closed with cast members and other theater VIPs thanking the viewers and the front line workers. Gaines ended with, "Stay safe, be well and let's all take care of each other."

Josh Hale, pres/CEO Big Shoulders Fund, and friends.

The Big Shoulders Fund will host its annual "Reach for the Stars" gala on Friday, September 23 at the Hilton Chicago. Here's what Josh Hale, president/CEO, had to say about BSF which provides support to Catholic Schools in the neediest areas of inner-city Chicago. "We are actively working to keep our mission strong and vibrant. Our 95 schools are providing e-learning to some 26,000 children in under-resourced communities. Also, we are listening to the needs of these schools and children and are providing them with what they need – chromebooks, social-emotional supports, food, and caring – love!  While all of these are critical, ensuring these children, their families and communities have access to food has been the most critical and uplifting!  With the support of generous supporters, we have initiated U77ntitledan innovative partnerships with small community-based restaurants to deliver food/meals to our students, families, and others in the community facing food instability. Currently, we have 20 sites set up – our schools – located in some of Chicago’s lowest income communities.  We have partnered with just over 30 local, family owned

restaurants in these communities to provide meals.  We pay the restaurants to prepare the meals which are either distributed at our schools or picked-up from the restaurant. They are fresh, hot and restaurant quality. We see this as a win-win in that we help local community-based organizations – restaurants and our schools – to remain open, vibrant and fulfilling a great need in their community. This program has grown significantly and, thus far, we have served nearly 20,000 meals and counting." Keep up the great work Josh and BSF! Steve and Marjorie Harvey fashionably masked.

The Chicago Sun-Times shared a very important article about face masks. Basically, it's everything you need to know about wearing them, caring for them and what types are the best for safety. The article, by Stephanie Zimmermann, states that there are three kinds of masks–N95 masks, medical or surgical masks and cloth masks. N95s block 95% of particles and medical/surgical masks filter out about 60-80% of particles. Any of these types of masks work better than a bandana. Read article here for all the details. #StaySafe #StayMasked

Leave it to the Rolling Stones, they never miss an opportunity to stay relevant. They have released a very cool song perfectly describing the weird times we're all living through. "Living in a Ghost Town," the song and accompanying video, was written and created by Jagger and Keith Richards in London and L.A. (in isolation).  Mick said, ‘‘So the Stones were in the studio recording some new material before the lockdown and there was one song we thought would resonate through the times that we’re living in right now. We’ve worked on it in isolation. And here it is – It’s called ‘Living in a Ghost Town’ – I hope you like it” Keith said, “So, let's cut a long story short. We cut this track well over a year ago in L.A. for part of a new album, an ongoing thing, and then shit hit the fan. Mick and I decided this one really needed to go to work right now and so here you have it, "Living in a Ghost Town." Stay safe!” Watch it below…..so cool!

Facetune_02-05-2020-16-21-37On Saturday, when the temps reached 70 and the sun came out, Chuck, Rooney and I made a break for it. We took our old Sebring convertible north on Lake Shore Drive and we didn't stop until we reached a beach. We were careful to stay outside the I am sooo blogging about thispolice barricade but we could still feel the breeze on our faces and hear the gentle lapping of the waves on the shore. It felt like we had taken a long trip but it was only 20 minutes away. It's true that this virus has forced us to stop and smell the roses. I guess out of everything bad, comes something good. For us, that trip rejuvenated us beyond belief. We had sand in our shoes and grateful hearts. I hope you get a chance to do the same.

Love, as always,

Candace

P.S. And now, a bed time story of how it started and why hindsight’s 2020.
