For years we kept getting better and better with our spay/neuter program and the euthanasia rate has just plummeted over the years. During a lighthearted moment, he became the first astronaut to take a selfie in space. The photo went viral in 2017. Today, he is a spokesperson and advocate for many nonprofits, including the Navy Seal Foundation. Below is an excerpt from our Q&A: What's was one of your most awe-inspiring moments in space? And, yeah, that was what probably took my breath away; What was your scariest moment? “We had a spacewalk where my buddy and I were out IMG_5939there, and his spacesuit malfunctioned and there was water leaking inside his helmet and we had to hurry up and get back in. That was probably the scariest moment.”; With your unique perspective of the cosmos, do you think there's life on other planets? “I think that the universe is so giant, somewhere out there, there's life. We just don't know. I don't believe it's in our solar system, but in my opinion, it’s naive to think that it couldn't exist anywhere in the universe.”; What do you think about the civilians in space program and what advice would you give to those

train so intently, it’s not for the good day when everything goes by the plan, but it's for when things start breaking that you can save yourself, save the equipment, keep the thing alive, and your crew mates alive. So just have an appreciation for that and take the training seriously, because it's more than just an enjoyable ride. There's a lot to it.”; How did your training as a Navy SEAL help you as an astronaut? “The military does an amazing job, SEAL teams specifically, of preparing IMG_5934somebody to, in simple terms, walk, chew gum, talk on the radio, and make decisions all at the same time. You're dealing with a dynamic environment. Stuff in front of you is changing. You've got to talk on the radio, communicate that to somebody else, so that you have coordinated effort in that mission. All of that translates exactly to being an effective astronaut. So, I definitely

had some advantage with that training under my belt when I got there, but the NASA training is really good, and everybody gets up to that speed eventually.” The afternoon soiree included a Q&A with about 25 guests at the home of Muneer Satter and Kristen Hertel Satter. Invitees enjoyed mingling with Cassidy, taking photos, and a lavish lunch buffet before Cassidy answered further questions and shared his history in a delightful pavilion on the grounds that was situated in front of an infinity pool with a spectacular lake view in the background.  (Mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 13, when the Navy Seal Foundation hosts its 12th signature fundraiser, “Midwest Evening of Tribute,” at Navy Pier’s AON Grand Ballroom. THE WHO, WHAT, WHERE AND WOW: PARTY PEOPLE IN THE WINDY CITY

The Christkind at the market at Gallagher Way in Wrigleyville.

The Christkindlmarket is back and heralding the holidays like none other. The preview party, "Twas' the Night Before Christkindlmarket," was November 17. This

was a great chance to really see the amazing gifts on offer up close and actually chat with the vendors. I spoke to Frank of Frank's Ornament House, he's been coming to the market for 25 years and absolutely loves it. He said, "I love seeing people come here from around the world and am proud to display my over 2,500 ornaments from my country [Germany]!" Another vendor's daughter had designed several of the ornaments on display which I thought was so charming. Everyone has a story and I wish I could've chatted with every one of them. Inside a special warming tent, guests could snap

photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoy the popular gluhwein (spiced, mulled wine) and an opening ceremony that introduced the Christkind, the face of the market, who welcomed visitors. A buffet dinner was offered in the heated Grand IMG_3440Timber Haus where many of the food items for sale in the market could be sampled. (The potato pancakes were out of this world.). Carolers and the Phenix Trio provided a festive soundtrack to the market. The following day, the market in Wrigleyville/ Gallagher Way opened and, for the first time, a skating rink was placed inside Wrigley Field! It was so cool to see the stadium used in this way. In the Christkindlmarket, also for the first time, a charming

carousel took center stage surrounded by 35+ vendors. And, again for the first time, a brand new market was launched in Aurora at RiverEdge Park. There's is something for everyone at each market and it is such a great way to celebrate the season. The Daley Plaza and Aurora markets will be in place through December 24 and the Gallagher Way market through December 31. (christkindlmarket.com)

Kathy Piccone was honored as the Woman of Vision and Dr. Ali Djalilian was the Gift of Sight honoree. Both attracted supporters who were anxious Event co-chair Michael Caputo R (with Candid Candace) and guests James and Kay Macknyk.to give back to these two Chicagoans who have given so much to so many. Kathy was introduced by last year's honoree Justine Fedak, who gave a beautiful intro (all without notes!) and Dr. Ali, wearing a top hat, was presented by Dr. Parag Majmudar, last year's Gift of Sight honoree. There were so many exciting moving parts to the event that you didn't know where to look first. Upon entry, two "circus performers" (from ZZAZZ

Mary Ann Rose and her team tented the ballroom in large swaths of black and white fabric which matched the dramatic silk black and white tablecloths. A perfect final touch, donated by Mary Ann, were bright pink feathered fans at each place setting, which added the perfect pop of color. The overall effect was exactly

Congrats with love to realtor Frank N. Jeffery on the occasion of his 50th birthday. His longtime love Todd Hatoff threw him a fabulous bash at Sepia. Before this, he was feted at parties all over town and around the world (think San Jose del Cabo, at the Viceroy). Over 100 friends enjoyed delicious food and an amazing cake served by owner Emmanuel Nony himself. (Photos by Mila Samokhina)

More celebrations are in order, this time for longtime loves Kip Helverson and Trey Gonzales. They were united in marriage at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest on October 22.

programs that supplement resources and equipment available to the Chicago Police Department (CPD). Officers in attendance shared information about the work they do including Officer Orlando who was there with his police dog Rich, members of the bomb squad who demonstrated the use of their heavy equipment as well as a robotic dog and others. department’s colors. Two speakers stood out who inspired the room and made everyone feel proud to be Chicagoans. Here are their speeches in their entirety from Rick Simon, Chicago Police Foundation Board Chair, and Chicago Police Superintendent David O. Brown. Mary Ann Rose, as CPF executive director, coordinated and planned the event to perfection. Rick Simon, Chicago Police Foundation Board Chair: “What is the Chicago Police Foundation? What do we do? We serve those who serve us. Those who walk the thin blue line

every day. If you have the opportunity, go to the park across the street from Soldier Field and, in the park, you will see a blue line in tile about half a block long. That’s what every police officer walks every night when they go out to work—they walk that thin blue line that separates you from those who want to do you harm. The police officer that walks that line makes sure you don’t come to harm. So, I say to you, what will we do for them? …A LEMART [Law Enforcement Medical and Rescue Training] kit, that I’m holding here, costs

about $100 and we’ve supplied thousands of these life-saving pieces of equipment to police officers. By supplying these, not only are we saving citizens, but the officers are looked at someone who is a savior, partner, and friend.” David O. Brown, Chicago Police Department Superintendent, also addressed the crowd with this inspiring speech [in part]: “What you do holds together the fabric of our democracy. Policing is what happens to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to have a safe neighborhood, a place that you go to work and enjoy the fruits of your labors safely. Is it imperfect? Yes, officers have to make split second decisions many times to save lives. But often, not much appreciation for what they do. YOU have made Chicago Police Officers feel appreciated. You have. You help us build trust when we risk our lives going into some of the toughest neighborhoods. You make us feel like our jobs are not in vain. You have made us feel like the loud voices are not the majority, that YOU are the majority and are the examples of what society really feels about us, and that they appreciate our sacrifice.”

Kevin Sullivan, a key to Chicago's fundraising efforts for nonprofits, and a dear friend.

On a personal note, I want to send lots of love and healing hugs to Kevin Sullivan, a vital component of so many nonprofits' success around town. His commitment to The Service Club of Chicago and The Chicago Lighthouse are so appreciated by so many. He never says no which I am guessing is part of the reason he did some hospital time! To send a card (or a donation), please direct it c/o The Service Club, P.O. Box 10165, Chicago, IL 60610. We love you Kev and hope you're back to your old (wonderful) self soon!

SPECTACULAR! The last time we saw it was 2 years ago at the Auditorium Theatre. This production at the Lyric seems bigger, brighter and bolder, maybe it’s because the stage is larger at the Lyric which allows the dancers more room to shine and also more room to showcase the spectacular visuals! The entire cast is superb but you won’t want to miss veteran/star/dancer Victoria Jaiani as an Arabian dancer. Yowza! (Now through Dec. 27, Joffrey.org)

My first blog August 25 2008.

My first blog, August 25, 2008.

Dearest blog readers, This month, Candid Candace celebrates 13 years of delivering the best that Chicago has to offer. Thank you for supporting me since 2008! I feel the best is yet to come for all of us. Even though the past year has been one hot mess, I see great change on the horizon. For friends who have asked if they should consider leaving town, I say no, give it another chance. Even though crime is off the charts, I think we can at least celebrate being together again, planning weddings, seeing family and friends and smothering them with hugs and kisses. Since most of us are vaccinated, we can truly celebrate summer in the city with a sense of freedom that is palpable after our 15 months of hibernation, which already seems like a thing of the past. You can feel it in every corner of the city as people stretch their wings to fly again. Here's to soaring to great new heights together, FINALLY, and also to a very memorable, fun-filled fall.

The Service Club of Chicago hosted its annual Day on the Terrace fashion show/fundraiser Monday, August 2 at The Geraghty (2520 S. Hoyne). The event, this year themed "Here Comes the Sun," is always a labor of love that culminates after a long year of planning. The committee is always so supportive as is the Service Club's vibrant Auxiliary Board who planned a first-time after-party for this year's event (more on this later). The fundraiser was co-chaired by Jean Antoniou, Tracey Tarantino DiBuono and Sharyl Mackey with the leading sponsors and event producers being The Geraghty, Kehoe Designs, Black Oak Technical Productions and, of course, the one

The International Playboy Bunny Reunion was held at The Drake with Bunnies from around the world in attendance.

As you all probably know, I owe a great deal to Playboy and Hugh Hefner, who literally brought me to Chicago and ultimately, to all of you. I am forever grateful and indebted to

this amazing man who I still miss and always will. I IMG_9272welcome any chance to revisit my Playboy family and former Bunny Diana Petersen made it happen for so many of us recently, in very grand style. Nearly 300 Bunnies from around the world convened in Chicago for the International Playboy Bunny Reunion which also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the first Playboy Club. Diana had planned a 4-day long series of events that included a Guys & Dolls party with a Gatsby

fireworks cruise and brunch at the popular Rosebud Restaurant. The celebration culminated with a dressy dinner at the Drake Hotel on Sunday. I reconnected with Bunnies I hadn't seen in nearly 50 years. I had worked first at the St. Louis Playboy Club in 1973 with friends that included Marsha Callender, Patti McGuire Connors, IMG_9283Janis Schmitt, Rhetta Penninger and so many more. I saw a few of these St. Louis Bunnies here in Chicago. From my Chicago Playboy Club days, there was a better representation that IMG_9352 included Judi Kalata Altiere, Angie Chester, Cindy Fossen Russell, Nancy Perry, Susan Stone, Candy Hockenberry, Eddie Cook, Anna D'Agata, Cheryl Carioscia, Rita……and others. The first of these events was a meet-and-greet which took place at the Knickerbocker Hotel. As you may or may not know, this was the location of the second Playboy Club following the original one at 116 E. Walton. Its final incarnation in Chicago was in Lincoln Park (in the old Four

None of us are getting any younger and I really loved remembering everyone the way they were, darling faces and figures in a variety of colorful, iconic Bunny costumes 214625087_4367825173263621_1709824112094481413_n but my curiosity got the better of me and off I went. THANK GOODNESS! I felt like I'd gone home again. Yes, we were all a little older but I could still see those cute faces and dazzling personalities that got them hired at the Clubs in the first place and I was back in the "hutch" with my friends again. Organizer Diana Peterson did a great job, even offering Playboy memorabilia for sale, many items she had created herself, like pillows with the girls' Bunny photos, sparkling rhinestone Bunny necklaces, cuff-links, costume cuffs,

girls' Bunny photos that were scattered throughout the room and hanging from banners from the second floor mezzanine railing. We were ensconced in all things Playboy and I couldn't have loved it more. (A friend of mine, Shelley Rosen, Luxe Bloom, even created a standing arrangement of specially treated roses with the Playboy logo which was a popular photo opp.) These ladies

were the sorority I never had and, as an only child, also IMG_9093 the sisters I never had. The final event of the weekend took place in the elegant Gold Coast Room at the Drake and boy oh boy, it was so expertly planned right down to the magnificent floral arrangements on the tables to the giant black Playboy bunny logo statue that served as the focal point of the cocktail reception. An amazing array of rare Playboy memorabilia was on display in a silent auction with the live auction featuring two original Bunny costumes. Even Christie Hefner attended and delivered such a heartfelt speech. (Watch it here). The ladies danced and mingled throughout the magical evening. Thanks, as always Hef, for giving me a forever family. And thanks to you Diana Peterson for making it all possible!

"Fishing at the Jetty" program on the Riverwalk.

Who knew you could fish off the Riverwalk? Chicago Park District's FREE "Fishing at the Jetty" program provides fishing opportunities, weekly afternoon fishing clinics and interactive activities for everyone! Fishing rods, bait and all the supplies needed for a big catch are provided. Never tried fishing before? The Jetty is the perfect place to give it a try and especially a great place to make memories with the kiddies! The Chicago Park District will “hook” you up with guided instruction, tips and more. Matt Renfree, senior program specialist, Untitledsays, "Nearly everybody catches fish. Most days, we are at 80 or 90 fish. The first weekend we had 484 people out.” The program, on the west end of “The Jetty: Floating Gardens,” part of the 0369.3-cpp-4681_large-1800x2705Riverwalk between Wells and Franklin streets, runs Thursdays and Fridays from noon-6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm, now through August 15 and again from August 21 to September 25. The program teaches fish and fishing on the Chicago River and includes species such as bluegill and gobies, sunfish, crappie, large and small mouth bass, common carp and channel catfish. Fish are released, except for gobies, which are put in clear plastic bins to become a teaching tool about invasive species. So far, the rarest fish captured has been an American eel. All species that are caught are logged. (Check out more places to fish in and around Chicago here!) Now this is REEL fun!

Chance and the Biebers in chicago

Chance the Rapper, Justin and Hailey Bieber at Beatrix.

Even with the crime and Covid, Chicago is still a celebrity magnet! Spotted around town were Justin and Hailey Bieber lunching and dining with our own

Chance the Rapper. The trio visited Beatrix on Wednesday, July 29 sitting outside on the patio around 12:30 pm. Hailey sipped on an Iced Matcha with Honey & Oat Milk (thought you needed to know this). They chatted and enjoyed the weather at the neighborhood restaurant and coffeehouse for about an hour and a half. After coffee at Beatrix, they went for dinner that same night at RPM Seafood, sitting outside on a private terrace overlooking the Chicago River. After they finished dinner, which included the restaurant's signature Seafood Tower, they enjoyed dessert, Cookies & Cream Ice Cream Cake. On their way out, they stopped to take photos with a few fans outside the restaurant. On Bieber's Insta page he said of the evening and of his wife, "the love of his life," "This is my view during date night. Wtf. I'm so blessed."

The 3D interactive hologram of Survivors'

stories was profoundly moving and created by the Museum, which is the first in the world to employ this technology in a permanent exhibition space. To create this interactive experience, 13 Survivors from around the world agreed to go through a rigorous interviewing process. Each of the participating Survivors spent several days in a Los Angeles studio, answering over 2,000 questions about their Holocaust experiences before the unblinking gaze of 50-plus cameras. The experience is interactive and you can ask all the Survivors questions about their lives. Take a look at Fritzie Fritzshall's story below and I hope you get a chance to visit the Museum soon AND join me for the virtual event on Sept. 2 (Event details here!)

PoohWith the world spinning at such a pace and Chicago being turned upside down, I always think of this quote by the English theologian and historian Thomas Fuller. "It is always darkest just before the dawn." I pray this is true because we are going through some of the darkest days I've ever experienced here in our beautiful city. Looters seem to be on every corner and the disrespect towards our police is at an all-time high. I am not a political person but I do have common sense and I think I know what's right and what's morally wrong. There is no excuse for all this crime. NONE. PERIOD. I hope these hard times will serve a positive purpose as a wake up call to our communities, government officials and citizens. Protesting for what you believe in is one thing but trashing a city is an entirely different matter and should NOT be allowed in any way, shape or form.

GALAS GOING VIRTUAL: HOW SHAKESPEARE THEATRE COMPANY CELEBRATED THE BARD’S BIRTHDAY IN STYLE ONLINE

Sign seen on Covid car ride. We believe.

Welcome back for my second blog under covid. Like everyone else in the world, I feel like this thing has me by the throat. I understand the frustration of people trying to gain back some freedom. In the beginning, believe it or not, I thought this was sort of fun–at least I had an excuse to stay home with Chuck and Rooney. I even got in some very creative cooking, thanks to Chef Art Smith and his great Insta videos. The stay-at-home order was like having permission to take a staycation. Little did I, or anyone else,

realize how long this would last and the horrible loss of life, sickness and personal sacrifice (on behalf of the front line workers

and others) it would cost. I understand the safety precautions we all need to take but I'm definitely ready to get back to work, get out of the house and have a reason to get dressed and earn a paycheck again. Zoom meetings are not for me. I'm a Gemini, I need social interaction like I need air to breathe. I know this will end but then what? What will the new normal look like? We all see how the world changed following 9/11. I

How will I handle not getting a hug from Kathy Piccone at Gibson's and how sad would it be not to be able to sit at Tufano's with Joey DiBuono or at the bar at Pizano's with Brian shooting the breeze. Times will change but I pray memories like these will return for us all, and soon.

Fundraising-organizations-nonprofit-charityOur fabulous gala-going days have been cut short too, for now. Thank you Rona. However, that doesn't mean nonprofits aren't getting creative with their fundraising, ergo virtual galas! Now, we all know this isn't nearly as gratifying as rubbing shoulders with friends, comparing new outfits or toasting a successful night, but it is a vital effort for the organizations to stay afloat and keep revenue streams open. I've come to realize that if supporters have their heart set on your nonprofit, they will find a way to help and this gives them a perfect opportunity during this crisis. Case in point, I recently "attended/watched" Chicago Shakespeare Theatre's online event, "Toast to Shakespeare's Birthday." It's lucky for them that they have such a deep arsenal of performing and creative talent, which helped move along the 1/2 hour free celebration. It was joyous and thoughtfully produced with nearly 2000 households tuning in and several thousand more on-demand. The organization was really ahead of the game though as they've been producing "tons" of online content as part of their ongoing Shakes@Home initiative. The recent birthday celebration for the bard was the first virtual event of this kind that they have produced. The event was part of its Brave New World campaign which brought in more than $10,000 in new and first time gifts toward the $900,000 raised to date. Read details below:

The evening also featured Chicago hip hop sensations, the Q Brothers Collective – GQ, JQ, Jax and Pos, who have created award-winning “ad-rap-tations” of Shakespeare including Othello: The Remix. Also, we are listening to the needs of these schools and children and are providing them with what they need – chromebooks, social-emotional supports, food, and caring – love!  While all of these are critical, ensuring these children, their families and communities have access to food has been the most critical and uplifting!  With the support of generous supporters, we have initiated U77ntitledan innovative partnerships with small community-based restaurants to deliver food/meals to our students, families, and others in the community facing food instability. Currently, we have 20 sites set up – our schools – located in some of Chicago’s lowest income communities.  We have partnered with just over 30 local, family owned

restaurants in these communities to provide meals.  We pay the restaurants to prepare the meals which are either distributed at our schools or picked-up from the restaurant. They are fresh, hot and restaurant quality. We see this as a win-win in that we help local community-based organizations – restaurants and our schools – to remain open, vibrant and fulfilling a great need in their community. This program has grown significantly and, thus far, we have served nearly 20,000 meals and counting." Keep up the great work Josh and BSF! The Chicago Sun-Times shared a very important article about face masks. Basically, it's everything you need to know about wearing them, caring for them and what types are the best for safety. The article, by Stephanie Zimmermann, states that there are three kinds of masks–N95 masks, medical or surgical masks and cloth masks. N95s block 95% of particles and medical/surgical masks filter out about 60-80% of particles. Any of these types of masks work better than a bandana. Leave it to the Rolling Stones, they never miss an opportunity to stay relevant. They have released a very cool song perfectly describing the weird times we're all living through. "Living in a Ghost Town," the song and accompanying video, was written and created by Jagger and Keith Richards in London and L.A. (in isolation).  Mick said, ‘‘So the Stones were in the studio recording some new material before the lockdown and there was one song we thought would resonate through the times that we’re living in right now. We’ve worked on it in isolation. And here it is – It’s called ‘Living in a Ghost Town’ – I hope you like it” Keith said, “So, let's cut a long story short. We cut this track well over a year ago in L.A. for part of a new album, an ongoing thing, and then shit hit the fan. Mick and I decided this one really needed to go to work right now and so here you have it, "Living in a Ghost Town." Stay safe!” Watch it below…..so cool!

We were careful to stay outside the I am sooo blogging about thispolice barricade but we could still feel the breeze on our faces and hear the gentle lapping of the waves on the shore. It felt like we had taken a long trip but it was only 20 minutes away. It's true that this virus has forced us to stop and smell the roses. I guess out of everything bad, comes something good. 1 - With Sargent McCormick (2nd from R) with friends at Pump Room

With Sargent McCormick (2nd from R) with friends at Pump Room

I received a very unusual invite for the 108th Twelfth Night Masquerade. What the hell is this, you ask? I know, I asked myself the same question so I googled it: It turns out this is a very exclusive party (by invite only and, by this I mean only you and not your spouse or a plus-one which irritated me to no end). However, my natural curiosity got the best of me so I just had to go. From what I discovered, this event was founded in 1905 by Bill Gamble (of Procter & Gamble fame) and his high-society cohorts, who banded together to break up the doldrums of winter in Chicago by inaugurating the Widow & Widowers Ball. From the start, it was a party with an irreverent twist: Gamble and company drew up a list of all the couples in their social circles, decided which member of each couple they deemed the most fun and invited that person alone to attend the ball. By 1920, this rule was relaxed – no doubt because of the outrage from the other partner – and the name was changed to The Twelfth Night Masquerade. Billy Gamble died in 1921 but the party continues as his lasting legacy to Chicago social life. Twelfth Night 2 - Clemente Dadoo from the University of Chicago and Thomas Love from Northwesternhas been a fixture on the Chicago social calendar for more than a century and for many remains a family tradition with current guests, their parents and even their grandparents in attendance. In order to receive an invite, you must be known to the Committee of Twelve. Oh, and the evening was also a celebration of charming Sargent McCormick’s 30th birthday. 🙂 I could only attend the pre-party cocktail get-together at the Pump Room but the party hit its zenith later with 600 guests in costume in the Gold Coast Room of the Drake Hotel. No press allowed…oops, there goes next year’s invite! 😉 Their motto: Let good taste prevail to no avail. Their rule: No equestrians or mounted pedestrians.

Ladybug_Bash_final-01-19-13I love this event that benefits Atia’s Project Ladybug.  On March 23rd, HGTV host and “hottie-with-a-heart” Dina Manzo will host the third annual Ladybug Bash to benefit Comer Children’s Hospital at the Chicago Cultural Center, located at 78 E.
