CHICAGO’S RISING STARS HONORED BY FASHION GROUP INTERNATIONAL

The 8th Annual Rising Star Awards were presented by Fashion Group International of Chicago at the Hotel Sax on September 12th with our town’s most fashionables in attendance. It was a night of high spirits and high hopes as the nominees toasted each other with champagne and wished each other good luck. And in this case, it truly WAS an honor just to be nominated since we have so many accomplished and talented peeps in the Windy City. In the category of Accessories, nominees were Brynn Capella, Forme Millinery, Rachel Olesker and Toki Collection and Diego Rochas presented Forme Millinery with the beautiful, crystal Rising Star award. “Fashions have been a part of me since I was a little girl playing in my grandmother’s trunk. She was even a
milliner so it runs in my blood. It’s truly an honor to be recognized for my passion,” said owner Jenny Pfanenstiel. Ulta Beauty’s Carrie Lannon presented nominees in the Beauty category – Aaron’s Apothecary, Sonia Roselli The Makeup Studio, The Circle Salon (which was named by Elle magazine as one of the top 100 salons in the country), and Dirt, Erthe Beaute, LLC – and Aaron’s Apothecary won with owner Aaron Pietrykowski joking, “Who knew an apothecary could win a beauty award?” James Nyack (Baker Furniture) awarded Sean Michael Design with the award in the Interiors department (other nominees included INDO, inhabit and Meg Caswell) and winner Sean Michael had this to say: “The thing that makes me happiest and alive is to improve the lifestyle of my clients.” Nora Del Busto won in the Apparel category with stiff competition from Atelier Azza, C/FAN and Miriam Cecelia. (Presenter was Erica Strama.) Sarca’s Alexis Cozzini walked off with the crystal hardware (presented by Chicago magazine editor Beth Fenner) in the Retail category, where other nominees included 610 Home, Haberdash and Shop 857. I was thrilled to present the award for E-Commerce and loved everyone in the category that included Cheeky Chicago, Glossed & Found, Luxury Garage Sale and Trunk Club. All of these nominees took an idea from concept to reality with sheer determination and lots of innovation. Trunk Club, created by Brian Spaly, was created to solve a simple problem – guys hate to shop – and this online store provides a personalized, pain-free service to help guys look great with no hassles. The team has grown from four to 100 since 2009. Luxury Garage Sale was created by Brielle Buchberg and Lindsay Segal, childhood friends with a shared passion for collecting. LGS is the premier place for buying and selling new, gently used or vintage high-end women’s clothing, shoes, bags and accessories. It’s risk-free consignment plus they have a popular blog called “Off the Cuff.” Cheeky Chicago, created by Jessica Zweig and Erica Bethe Levin, is an online magazine catering to the “in the know” woman in Chicago. It covers EVERYTHING that you need to know about living in Chicago and is the ultimate key to the city. To screams of wild excitement, I opened the envelope to find Glossed & Found the winner. This online video magazine’s team is stellar and includes Beauty on Call founder Stacey Roney, Fig Media owner James Gustin and Emily Hard and beloved creative and editorial director, Graham Kostic. Their motto: “It’s beauty. It’s fashion. It’s fun.” The evening’s premier sponsor was bebe and other proud event sponsors included Chicago magazine, Peroni, Tito’s, Moet & Chandon, Classic Color and FORD Models. I’m not a part of the horsey set but I could quickly become addicted if the events were as delightful, charitable and as awe-inspiring as last weekend’s 4th Annual International Hunter Jumper Derby in Antioch, Illinois. Hosted by Chicago Equestrians for a Cause and sponsored by Canadian National Railroad, this event benefitted three charities – The Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, University of Chicago’s Cancer Research Foundation and the U.S. Hunter Jumper Association Foundation. It was a perfect day, with guests and organizers breathing a sigh of relief after the heavy rains the night before. I haven’t ridden since I was a little girl – my dad took home movies showing me riding ponies with my head bobbing so hard, it looked like I should’ve had a neck brace so I’m certainly no expert but I will say these horses were so beautiful that they took my breath away. The winner of the day, Jennifer Alfano, told me how she felt about her award-winning horse, Jersey Boy: “He loves to compete, he loves a challenge and I am so lucky to have him. He has a knack for these Derbies and just won the Derby Finals in Lexington, Kentucky.” Ten-year-old Jersey Boy – a big, athletic chestnut Hanoverian gelding – was recently named “High Performance Horse of the Year” and “Hunter Horse of the Year” and he and Jennifer both have won more awards than will fit into this space. Just to prove this point, Jennifer won first AND second place at this event also riding Helen Lenehan’s Dutch Warmblood mare Miss Lucy for a $50,000 purse! When I asked course designer Bobby Murphy if he had a favorite, he didn’t hesitate: Jersey Boy. There was so much to see, too! As you entered the beautiful, manicured grounds a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren gullwing was on view as well as a $250K motor home. A walk through the barn brought us face to face with more of these magnificent animals. Robert “Rush” Weeden, who owns Annali Farms (where the event was held on an old Steeplechase course) along with wife Caroline, said they have around 40 horses. I tried to envision growing up on a farm like this but even with my vivid imagination, I couldn’t conjure up a life this grand. It was truly something to see and, even if you didn’t understand the scoring or the judging, you could spot a winner when you saw one. Congrats to Jennifer and Jersey Boy – what a fabulous combination! And congrats to Chicago Equestrians for a Cause Founder Margaret Benjamin, who wears her passion for horses and her charities proudly on her sleeve! Since its inception in March 2009, Bottle & Bottega has quickly become the city’s coolest, most popular alternative to a typical night out. Bottle & Bottega’s hands-on art sessions can focus on painting on canvas, creating a mosaic, wine glass painting, jewelry making, live models and more. This opening night also included a charity component with three celebrity artists painting for their favorite local charities. Stefanie Safran (Steph and the City) donated her talents for La Porte Hospital Foundation, Rochelle Vayo Adkinson ("Bring It Home") painted for the American Cancer Society and Karl Sponholtz (Design Star Season 6) donated his time to the Center on Halsted. It was the “Perfect Pink Night” for the cocktail reception and LaSalle Street Bridge lighting benefitting the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation at Chicago Cut Steakhouse September 13th. In honor of the approaching Breast Cancer Awareness Month and as a kick-off for Komen’s Chicago’s 15th annual Race for the Cure, the LaSalle Street and Wells Street bridges were lighted pink on Thursday evening and will light up each night at sunset until September 22nd. The reception, held at ground level of Chicago Cut was hosted by Komen Chicago “Pink Tie Guy” Howard Bernick and co-chaired by Janet and Craig Duchossois and Jeffrey Aronin. Komen for the Cure Founder and CEO Nancy Brinker headed up an all-star committee that included Nancy and Steven Crown, Sabrina and Antonio Gracias, Aimee and Jim Grey, Leslie Hindman, Carol and Larry Levy, Martha and Rich Melman, Harriette and Ted Perlman, MK and JB Pritzker, Linda Johnson Rice, Cari and Michael Sacks, Marilyn and Rocky Wirtz and Heather and Beau Wrigley. One of the top emerging designer collective showcases during New York Fashion Week was founded AND produced by Chicago’s very own Dionne Williams. Now in its fourth season, “EMERGE! A Fashion Runway Show” recently showcased the Spring 2013 collections of an elite group of emerging designers from around the world. This highly-anticipated fashion event’s planners reviewed hundreds of designer submissions and selected the six best to showcase. They included actress India de Beaufort, (Ballyhoo); Franklin Rowe (Franklin Rowe International); Taneasha Prunty (Gidi Designs); Berny Martin (Catou Designs); Natasha Lazarovic (Temna Fialka), and Arefeh Mansouri (Arefeh Fashion). Held at the historic Broad Street Ballroom, Emerge! hosted an invitation only event with more than 400 guests that included celebrities, fashion insiders, media, retail buyers and tastemakers who came to see the newest trends and this year’s winning designers. Nearly 500 affluent professionals, entrepreneurs, media, sports and entertainment personalities came together to celebrate “Compassion, Fashion and Cocktails.” This evening honored the arts and raised money for non-profits that included The Musical Arts Institute, Bin Donated (as seen on ABC’s “Secret Millionaire”) and St. Vincent’s de Paul Center & Marillac Social Center. This evening was co-chaired by Lema Khorshid, Sarah Noonan, Fei Wang and Sam Yanover. Hosts included Michael Brown, Tom Carroll, Diana Chen, Katie Freeman, David Friedman, Kim Runner, Diane Testa, Jessica Young and Doug O’Donahue. Focusing on a theme of pioneers in fashion, food and film, Frontier (located at 1072 N. Milwaukee) was transformed into a cutting edge fashion runway scene as guests took part in raffles and door prizes that included a Mexican vacation, signed sports memorabilia and lots more. During this celebration of food and fashion, musician and founder of The Musical Arts Institute Michael Manson provided a jazz performance with three of his talented students. A runway show featured designer Eva Franco’s fall collection while a film montage of classic black and white films played throughout the evening. In honor of its big 1-0, local fashion retailer AKIRA is upping the scope and scale of its annual style extravaganza with its 10th
Annual Fall Fashion Show themed Métropolitain. The event will benefit five local charities and is set for Sunday, September 23 at Grossinger City Autoplex, located at 1500 N. Dayton St. Doors open at 4 p.m. and the runway show will begin at 7 p.m.; the after-party at Japonais (located at 600 W. Chicago Ave.) kicks off at 9 p.m. See your daily commute reimagined in a runway presentation at AKIRA's garage-turned-subway station. The show will be hosted by Olivia Culpo (Miss USA 2012) and emceed by Kelli Zink (Celeb-TV). Later, shop the looks you loved at their one-night-only pop-up store – proceeds from this event will benefit Imerman Angels, Project Ladybug, Clara's House, the Human Rights Campaign and AKIRA's Fashion Scholarship Fund. More than 2,500 partygoers fell happily down the rabbit hole at this exciting event benefitting Chicago Gateway Green!

Congrats to celebrity stylist Eric Himel! His latest styling gig for Giuliana and Bill Rancic and new son Edward Duke was featured on the cover of Life & Style magazine! AND, speaking of the Green Tie Ball, Eric also styled rock artist and event deejay Pete Wentz in a cool bowtie and suit from SuitSupply. Congrats Eric!

Congrats are also in order for darling and very stylish Lynne Bredfeldt, the Park Hyatt’s PR director, for being selected as one of six executives from across the country to be a part of the 2012 fall fashion campaign for bebe and Marie Claire magazine’s “Styled for Success” feature! ALL EYES WERE ON MAMIE WALTON AT THE ILLINOIS EYE-BANK GALA!

It’s not often that you feel transported to Britain here in the Windy City but this was the theme and the ambiance for the recent Illinois Eye-Bank Gala honoring Mamie Walton as the 2012 Woman of Vision and Dr. Joel Sugar as the Gift of Sight Honoree. (Joel has been the Illinois Eye-Bank’s Medical Director for 25 years.) The party, titled “Annabel’s: Indulge in London’s Veddy Best,” brought out more than 200 guests to the Peninsula on a perfect summer night. This hotel has one of the finest patios in town and when the weather is as flawless as it was on this night, no one wanted to move inside for dinner! Mamie Walton’s British roots made the party’s theme so appropriate for this magnetic and ageless woman. With décor by Tom Kehoe, the Grand Ballroom perfectly captured the look and feel of the famed London nightclub, Annabel’s, with purple linens, gold napkins and chairs and even a signature Annabel’s touch, a circular dance floor. This legendary club was founded in 1963 and named after the late Sir James Goldsmith’s wife, Annabel. It was the first of its kind – a members-only nightclub that catered to an exclusive clientele that included royals such as Princess Anne and the Prince of Wales, President Richard Nixon, Aristotle Onassis and Frank Sinatra. Entertainers who have performed there include Tina Turner, Ray Charles, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Ross and, most recently, Lady Gaga. On this night, we had our own top-notch entertainment with Mamie herself serenading us in song (“Time After Time”) in perfect pitch. As she glided around the dance floor in a glamorous vintage black Chanel cocktail dress, you felt like you were truly a lucky member of an exclusive club, the Mamie Walton Fan Club! Her dress, by the way, was worn 20 years ago to Annabel’s when she and her late husband, Julius, were in London. After dining out with friends, the Morales, they hit Annabel’s. He was the Ambassador for Great Britain to Panama at the time. The Mark Olen Trio performed and Franklin Lamphere sang three songs from the 50’s and 60’s. Master of Ceremonies was the incomparable Bill Zwecker who is a long-time friend of Mamie’s. Eye-Bank Executive Director Diane Hollingsworth announced the Beverly Blettner Gift of Knowledge education fund and acknowledged Amy Wimer. “Beverly looked for one person to carry that torch and it was Amy who chaired the event for the first three years.” Dr. Randy Epstein introduced Dr. Sugar and awarded him his honor. Bill introduced last year’s Woman of Vision honoree Jean Antoniou who proudly presented Mamie with her Woman of Vision Award to wild applause. It was one of those perfect nights in Chicago that we wait all winter for. Everyone was dressed in their best with smiles from ear to ear. If you live here, you know what I'm talkin' about. And it was on this night that a new, chic soon-to-be hotspot opened on Navy Pier called City Porch. I was proud to co-host the party with owner Manolis Alpogianis of America's Dog fame. He and his family have a long history of restaurant successes and this new spot will be yet another notch on their belts. For opening night, Chef Heather Terhune (Sable) featured some of her specialties. Every month, there will be a celeb
rity chef with Tony Mantuano (Spiaggia) in July and in August, Jimmy Bannos (Heaven on Seven and The Purple Pig) will be featuring his special menu. The menu under Executive Chef George Alpogianis (Manolis' cute brother) and Chef de Cuisine Anthony Riley has a variety of delicious selections in place under "Big, Small and Sweet Plates." For small plates, mouth-watering dishes like Moroccan buffalo wings, Wagyu beef sliders, Havarti mac & cheese, chicken souvlaki and hand-packed crab cakes are on the menu. Salad plates include a killer lobster avocado salad, heirloom tomato salad and chicken chopped salad. Big Plates offers some of the best margherita pizza I've tasted in a long, long time and the sandwich offerings are too extensive to mention! There is also a section for the little ones (whose menus I always covet) as well as fabulous sweets including Eli's Cheesecake, skillet cookies and chocolate peanut butter Napoleons! Designed by Gretchen Dockendorff (with input from Manolis) this new restaurant offers a chic dining experience looking over Lake Michigan and the skyline. It's charming yet upscale all at the same time. Chef Art Smith had this to say: “What I love about City Porch is the fact that it brings the best of Chicago to a very popular destination place, Navy Pier. Yes, there are funnel cakes, corn dogs, etc. but now, there are beautiful artisanal foods prepared by Chicago's very best. Our city has amazing chefs and thanks to Manolis Alpogianis and his family they will introduce this to thousands upon thousands of tourists at Navy Pier, too.” On opening night, bold-faced locals came out to play and party! On Friday evening, June 8th, hundreds of Chicago’s most fashionable and philanthropic joined together at the Greenhouse Loft (located at 2545 W. Diversey) for Macy’s Glamorama kickoff event, the Glam Launch Party! I was so proud to chair this event for the third year benefitting Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana (RMHC-CNI). The evening was a nod to the 60’s, coinciding with the 2012 Glamorama theme “British Invasion: The Music Then, The Fashion Now!” and featured the music of American English (who were just voted the top Beatles cover band in the country!) They kept the crowd dancing with rousing renditions of all of the Beatles classics along with a great DJ, Lee Michaels. At this exclusive event, guests mixed and mingled while sipping on cocktails courtesy of SkinnyGirl Cocktails (thanks for the introduction Tom Strehle!), Tito’s Handmade Vodka and Voga Wines, and enjoying passed appetizers from Food for Thought catering. Sweet treats were courtesy of our new sponsor, Amy DiTomasso of Sugar Chic Designs. Models, dispersed throughout the expansive space, showcased collections from local designers Anna Fong, Borris Powell, Elda de la Rosa and M2f Brand Denims. The view of Chicago from the beautiful landscaped rooftop garden was a highlight and as guests enjoyed cocktails and hors d’oeuvres al fresco, other supporters were busy having their photos taken by on-site photog, Steve Ewert. Other highlights included a performance from the high-energy hip hop dance troop, Hip Hop Connixon, fashion illustrations by beloved Rosemary Fanti and the ever popular (and my favorite!) Action Booth that had lines all night long! The “Mob Wives Chicago” premier party for cast member Pia Rizza took place June 10th at JBar in The James hotel. Jennifer Graziano, creator of the “Mob Wives” franchise, was also there with more than 100 guests. According to the press release, “Pia Rizza is the daughter of Vincent Rizza, a dirty Chicago cop who worked for the Mob. He testified against the Mob and then went into the Witness Protection Program. Pia has struggled all her life to hide from the shame of having a ‘rat’ for a father. It’s been especially difficult to avoid the judgments and finger pointing in a town like Chicago. With the success of the original ‘Mob Wives NYC,’ it would only be a natural progression to feature women that were associated with the ‘alleged’ Chicago Outfit.” I haven’t seen it yet but will be on the lookout! Sadly, Lord knows, everywhere you go in the world, the first gesture is of a machine gun when you tell people you’re from Chicago.

The Lincoln Park Zoo’s Zoo-ologie Gala was their biggest one yet, with 1,000 guests raising more than $150,000! Hosted by the Auxiliary Board and co-chaired by Frank Favia, Melissa Kearney and Jodi McNally, the sold-out event included gourmet food, signature drinks and exclusive after-hours access to Lincoln Park Zoo which is one of the nation’s last remaining free admission zoos in the world. Thanks to décor by Flower Firm, a luxury tent was reminiscent of a South Beach celebration with young, hip Chicagoans dancing to the beat of DJ Rock City and enjoying cutting edge cocktails. Nibbles were offered from some of Chicago’s best restaurants including GT Fish & Oyster and Mercadito. Luxury raffle winners took home incredible prizes: a Bulgari handbag, two round trip tickets to Europe courtesy of United Airlines and a custom Lilly Pulitzer bicycle. I met Karen Wojcikowski at Gene & Georgetti’s and I think she is someone you should know. She is the founder and president of The Bully Police Squad, an organization she created after receiving numerous cases of reported bullying, many of which have involved death. Karen, a Chicago police officer with 15 years of service, is a life coach and public speaker, speaking to schools, parents, teachers and children on the effects of bullying and educates them in the process. The 63rd Annual Old Town Art Fair was one of the best ones yet! We live in the heart of Old Town and every year, I can’t wait to hear the little hammers hard at work outside my door with artists building their booths for one of the largest juried art fairs in the country! With 300 artists participating this year and more than 50 private gardens open to the public, many for the first time, this was a weekend to remember. There was great festival food from Adobo Grill, Stanley’s Kitchen & Tap, Phil Stefani’s, Caroll’s Corn Crib and more. Music by Brad Cole Music and Check With Lucy made the weekend simply perfect! It was pretty awesome people watching, too! Check out this Watch312.com video and see what I mean!

The Museum of Broadcast Communications celebrated its 25th anniversary on June 12th. More than 400 guests came out to see legends of television including Betty White, Hugh Downs and John Mahoney at the MBC’s new location at 360 N. State, which also served as its unofficial grand opening. (The official ribbon cutting occurred the following morning.) With 62,000 square feet, this building houses the National Radio Hall of Fame, sets and costumes from “Bozo’s Circus,” puppets such as Charlie McCarthys, vintage radios and TVs, one of the cameras used in the Kennedy-Nixon debate, a former “Meet the Press” set and a studio dedicated to Paul and Angel Harvey among many other objects of interest. Collections span more than 25,000 TV programs, 5,000 radio shows and 12,000 commercials totalling almost 100,000 hours of viewing. The evening began with a welcome from founder, president and CEO Bruce Dumont followed by comments from Richard Price (event co-chair and chairman and CEO of Mesirow), Pam Cullerton (event co-chair/civic leader) and Cheryl Pearson-McNeil (SVP of Public Affairs and Government Relations for Nielsen). Hugh Downs spoke next and recounted his first TV appearance: “It was 67 years ago and my first spot was in September of 1945. I was asked to do a newscast. The lights began to heat up and by the end of it, sweat was all over my seersucker suit, which I thought was a good thing because it kept me from catching fire.” (He also went on to say that, “The really innovative stuff came out of Chicago.”) John Mahoney introduced Betty White as “one of the most talented people in the world.” She quipped, “Boy, have I got YOU fooled!” and went on to say, “I’ve lusted after him for so long and he finally did my show. And it STILL didn’t happen.” (I whispered to Betty that she was the only woman I knew who could cuss like a trooper and still be elegant! Her smile was from ear to ear…LOVE that lady!) Lucky guests included Keith Magee (my sweet host), Carol Marin, Dan Rutherford, Tom Dreesen, Larry Wert, Marty Wilke, Joe Ahern, Dean Richards, Terry Hemmert, Rich Koz, Theresa Gutierrez, Lyn McKeaney, Rob Johnson, Brenda Arelano, Steve Starr, Kathy Brock, Barb and Roe Conn, Thea Flom, Mancow, Pat Brickhouse, Roderick Hawkins, Melissa Kennedy, Alan Krashesky, Paul Harvey Jr., Toby Eveland, Caroline Cracraft, Stephen Lewis and Alonzo Brown among others. THE WINDY CITY WELCOMES HOLLYWOOD KINGS

Sometimes opportunities come around when you least expect them. I have known, loved and admired socialite/author Sugar Rautbord for many a year. Her global connections are well known and her stories are fascinating as she calls many world leaders her friends. So, when she called and asked me if I would like to ride in the limo with legendary talk show host/author Larry King to Wrigley Field to see him throw out the first pitch, I had to pinch myself. I’ve always known and admired him (who hasn’t?) but it wasn’t until I had the opportunity to sit with him and ask questions that I came to know what a legend he truly is. He was in town to promote his current book, “Truth Be Told,” which is described as “a fascinating collection of stories and anecdotes about favorite guests, memorable moments, funniest jokes and a half-century of asking questions.” I can’t wait to read this one, right after I read his last book, “How to Talk to Anyone, Anytime, Anywhere.” (With my new gig as host of “Social Circles,” I think this book will come in VERY handy!) And speaking of “Social Circles,” I was even allowed to have my cameraman, Fred Jackson, in the car with me so we could record each and every precious moment. At most, I was expecting a sound bite from Larry enroute to the ballpark, but what I received was 25 minutes of uninterrupted “Larry King-isms” that I will never forget. He recounted his friendship with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who he said will never speak on a cell phone. So when a call came in for Larry at his barbershop from the Russian Prez, Larry’s barber took the call and said, “Some clown is on the phone saying he’s Putin!” (Putin said this about Larry: “In U.S., there are many talented and interesting people. But, still, there is just one King.”) And then there was the time that Saddam Hussein called Larry when he was enjoying himself at a restaurant with friends. Larry told the waiter, “Put him on hold.” Former President Bill Clinton called King during his impeachment proceedings and the first thing he asked was “Who’s winning?” knowing how passionate Larry is about baseball. King also talked about growing up poor in Brooklyn and remembers his first pair of glasses was courtesy of government aid. When I asked him how he met his gorgeous wife, Shawn, he said in L.A. in front of Tiffany’s. “It became pretty expensive…I wish it had been a Target!” At the ballpark, he was inundated with fans requesting him to sign their baseballs and take photos – and he obliged every single one of them. He also shared a sweet moment on the field with Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa: When Larry playfully tried to switch baseball caps with him for a photo, Tony wasn’t having any of it and held the cap for the camera instead. (BTW, Larry brought the Cubs luck, even though he’s a Dodgers fan – they beat the Cardinals 5-4 in 10 innings!) His long-time friend, Sugar Rautbord, hosted a book launch party for him, along with International Insurance exec Debra Hoag, later that evening at her posh Gold Coast condo with lots of friends in attendance. Seen on the scene were Jesse Jackson (talking presidential politics with Larry), Leslie Hindman, Lynne Bredfeldt, ABC anchor Cheryl Burton (wearing the cutest hot pants), Cancer Treatment Centers of America CEO Steve Bonner, Sophie Bross, film director Matthew Miele, Marilyn Miglin and her daughter Marlena, Holly Hunt, Jerry Stone, Chef Art Smith, Lane Davis, former Miss Arkansas and equestrian Darby Hill, Sun-Times’ Laura Washington, Chicago Mag’s Rich Gamble and NBC’s Alison Rosati, among many others. This same night, the 47th Chicago International Film Festival) honored Martin Sheen with a long overdue Lifetime Achievement Award. Martin came to town with his handsome son, Emilio Estevez, as part of their 32-city, grass-roots promo tour of their film, “The Way.” Film Fest Founder and Artistic Director Michael Kutza couldn’t have chosen a more worthy recipient to honor than this hard-working, remarkable and much-loved film icon. Sheen remarked to the crowd, after Governor Quinn honored him with a proclamation naming August 19th as “Martin Sheen and Emilio Estevez Day” in Chicago, that he ‘hopes after all this fuss that you like the movie!” (Governor Quinn told me later that Sheen, being the avid human rights activist that he is, had contacted him to ask him to abolish the death penalty.) As for the movie, “The Way” is described as “a powerful, inspirational, and often amusing story about family, friends and the challenge of navigating through an ever-changing world.” Estevez, who wrote, directed and co-starred in the film, describes it as “essentially the retelling of ‘The Wizard of Oz’” with Sheen portraying Dorothy in her quest to find her way home. After Sheen received his Silver Hugo from Kutza, he remarked that “it looks like the Blessed Mother!” He also said he would follow FDR’s advice to “be sincere, be brief and be seated.” Emcee Bill Kurtis had an opportunity to tease the Governor with his comment, “Wouldn’t this [the theatre] make a great casino?” In the media line before the screening, the loving father and son talked to each and every reporter! Emilio has piercing eyes just like his dad and when I told him so, he said, “And no contacts!” He loved directing his father, whom he said “has such dignity,” and is “always on time and knows all of his lines.” He also said his dad inspired him to write the story. In a London Telegraph interview, when asked if he had considered any other actor for the lead role, Estevez said, “Dad wanted me to. He said, ‘You ought to go to Michael Douglas. You’re not going to get this movie made with me.’ But I said, ‘I’m only making this movie with you.’ Then he said, ‘Mel Gibson should play this part.’ I said, you are playing this role. Stop.’ That’s the level of his generosity.” The love and respect between these two men was palpable and a joy to see. When I spoke to Martin, I asked him how he liked Chicago and he said, “This is not only a city of Big Shoulders, but of big hearts, too.” And I couldn’t agree more! After the movie, the Film Fest’s annual Summer Gala was held across the street at the Sheraton Hotel & Towers. Even the walk to the after-party was exciting as you wound your way past 11 Lincolns (one of the event’s sponsors) and through the pulsating light beams of the six massive searchlights. It made me feel like I was in Hollywood at the premiere of “Casablanca!” (Summer Gala Committee Chair Rich Varnes did an outstanding job along with his notable host committee!) The party continued the movie’s Spanish theme with flamenco dancers, tapas and Sangria along with a huge memorabilia-filled auction that included two guitars, one signed by Paul McCartney and the other red, white and blue one, signed by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band! There were also sports jerseys from Patrick Kane, Derrick Rose and Billy Williams; a Carlos Zambrano baseball; a Kermit the Frog sketch signed by Jim Henson; a signed “Peanuts” cartoon sketch; signed film fest posters as well as signed movie posters by Sheen and Estevez. There was even an Oscar poster signed by Jack Nicholson, Robert Redford, Woody Allen and Steven Spielberg among many others. There is such diversity in Chicago for events! You can go high, you can go low or you can go fest! The first (hopefully annual) Street Food Artistry event was held recently at Galleria Marchetti. This event celebrated the rich street food culture in Chicago and had something for everyone! Guests sampled tastings from Bistro One West, Dawali Mediterranean Kitchen, Dark Matter Coffee Company, E.leaven Food Company, English Bar & Restaurant, Porkchop and Wow Bao. Participating food trucks included Bergstein’s NY Deli Truck, Forever Yoghurt Truck and the Old School Root Beer Float Cart among others. Macy’s Chefs A-Go-Go Tour featured the Mobi Munch Truck manned by charming Chef Takashi Yagihashi. (Watch for his new restaurant, Slurping Turtle, coming soon to 116 W. Hubbard St.) His delicious and healthy noodle dish with secret sauce was to die for! I also loved the LickLick truck for the poochies, manned by cute owner Andreana Droz. Porkchop offered delicious shredded pork sandwiches grilled with whiskey corks!?! It was tasty (hic!) though! Chef Julius Russell gave cooking demonstrations using Chilean ingredients – he is so sweet and talented that it’s no wonder he has just been named Culinary Ambassador to Chile! With wife Jada by his side, they make a formidable team. :) There was also a kids’ cooking demo by handsome Chef Eric Paul. Live entertainment included the sweet sounds of Chicago Street Musicians’ Meisha Herron, M.A.D.D. Rhythms, The Real Connection, Soul People and H2O Soul. There was also an interactive, live photo shoot by fine art and fashion photographer Geraldine Rodriguez. This event was presented by President and Co-founder Patrice Perkins (My Lifestyle Zen) and Co-founder Alicia August-Wright (A’Vents by August), both who wanted to bring Chicago’s diverse communities together as one. Proceeds from the silent auction benefitted University of Chicago Charter School, Common Threads and Chicago Street Musicians.

The 10th Annual Catholic Charities Gala of the Arts will donate a percentage of proceeds benefitting the Catholic Charities’ ongoing Emergency Assistance Programs for those in need. Fifteen juried artists will display and sell their artwork at this event which will also include a seated dinner followed by the live performance of “Under the Streetlamp: An Intimate Evening with the Recent Stars of Chicago’s Jersey Boys.” Tickets are $250 and can be purchased by calling 312.655.7912 or by emailing aowen@catholiccharities.net.

Sunday, September 11th

The 31st Annual Misericordia Family Festival runs from 11 AM until 6 PM at Misericordia’s Campus, located 6300 N. Ridge (just south of Devon Avenue). This event will include live entertainment, a children’s theater, games, a celebrity dunk tank, Jesse White Tumblers, Frisbee Dogs, clowns, Rainbow Dogs Pet Therapy, silent auction, bingo, craft booths, kiddie rides and so much more to support the exceptional programs Miseracordia offers for more than 600 children and adults living with mild to profound developmental disabilities. This year, Miseracordia must raise $13 million for costs not covered by the State of Illinois in their efforts to provide housing for individuals on its waiting list. (Thanks to my friend Mary Frances Bragiel for giving me a heads up about this great event for a wonderful cause!!)

Saturday, September 17th

The 20th Annual Green Tie Ball, presented by A. Finkl & Sons, celebrates a “Return to the Emerald City” this year and, since this event IS at Finkl Town, located 2011 N. Southport, you know it will be fun!!! Co-chairs Tim Smithe and Stephanie Castagnier have planned an evening that will include edibles from more than 60 of Chicago’s finest restaurants, charitable gaming, live entertainment by Dr. Bombay, DJ Rock City and Platinum Events DJs as well as premium open bars. The evening begins with a VIP reception at 6:30 PM. This ball’s proceeds will help raise money towards the greening and beautifying of Chicago’s expressways, gateways and neighborhoods.
