PARTIES, PEOPLE AND POSITIVITY–HERE’S TO A BIGGER, BRIGHTER, HEALTHIER NEW YEAR!

Bar Mar

Bar Mar–a new venture from Gibsons Restaurant Group and Chef Jose Andres.

This past year has been trying but, we're still here, so there's much to be grateful for. I love seeing events cautiously return and was so happy to hug my friends again, even though this new variant is taking us back a step. Crime is off the charts with no end in sight but, I'm still hopeful this city will survive and thrive. I'm thrilled to see so many new restaurants opening up. Alex Dana just opened his 9th restaurant, this time in Millennium Park, and Gibsons Restaurant Group has partnered with Michelin starred Chef Jose Andres in some exciting new ventures which will keep our city on top of the foodie chain. On a sad note, we lost a 40-year institution, Yoshi's Cafe, in Lakeview. But, despite some

setbacks, this holiday season has never been brighter, literally speaking. Rosemont debuted its AMAZE Light Festival this year with over 1 million lights in Impact Field. Six Flags' Holiday in the Park returned this year with both in-person and drive-thru options and, again, millions of lights. Navy Pier hosted Light Up the Lake inside Festival Hall and the

AMAZE–an AMAZING debut experience at Rosemont.

Botanic Garden's Lightscapes was a sell-out. Brookfield Zoo's Holiday Magic, at 40 years young, was the area's longest-running lights event. Lincoln Park Zoo's Zoolights is expected to bring in nearly $2.5 million this year for its bottom line and Morton Arboretum's Illumination surpassed 200,000 visitors this year. Yes, the city has never shined brighter, hopefully it will be a harbinger of good things to come for us next year. Shine on Chi! We're all rooting for YOU!

Navy Pier's Light Up the Lake, now through Jan. 2.

At Navy Pier's "Light Up the Lake" debut attraction, now through January 2, a magical wonderland awaits, all enclosed within the warm, inviting Festival Hall. First off, being enclosed is a big plus for families with kids who want to keep them comfortable and warm during our cold winters. Another plus is the carpeting, very IMG_6385thoughtful for one and all AND it provides traction for the kiddos as they dart around the sparkling exhibits–lighted ornaments, ginormous teddy bears, Christmas boxes, tunnels of lights, a 3-story Christmas tree and more. It was so heartwarming to see so many families out enjoying themselves after a long period of isolation. Couples walking hand in hand and taking photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus. Children IMG_6379squealing with delight on the mini-train tooling around Christmas cottages. Adults sipping spiked hot chocolate and enjoying a variety of delicious foods–funnel cakes, loaded latkes, smoked brisket sandwiches, cotton candy, funnel cake sundaes, beer, tequila cocktails, pastrami-spiced turkey sandwiches and so much more. There's even a cookie decorating kit for the kids!  As we wandered throughout the 170,000-square-foot space, we felt the spirit of Christmas that is alive and well here. We sat for a while by the ice-skating rink watching as skaters, with varying levels of talent, swooped around to the sounds of the holidays. Beyond the rink, picnic tables were set up for dining with large fireplaces projected on screens above the tables. Thank you Navy Pier for all you do for the city of Chicago and its vital tourism trade. You are always thinking of ways to make us smile. (www.NavyPier.org)

Palmer House 150 anniversrary 12-21

Happy 150th Palmer House!

The historic Palmer House, a Hilton Hotel, celebrated its 150th anniversary December 8. A ceremony and celebration took place in the hotel's grand lobby before a crowd of fans, friends and media. The event honored both the milestone anniversary and National Brownie Day (paying homage to the original brownie recipe that was invented at the hotel). The lobby came alive with digital projections of historic photos along the walls, a gallery of never-before-seen historic artifacts and a proclamation from the Mayor Lori Lightfoot declaring today to be "Palmer House, a Hilton Hotel Day in Chicago, in celebration of 150 years of history, elegance and hospitality." The State of Illinois also issued a proclamation honoring the hotel. The Palmer House first opened on September 26, 1871. The hotel began as an extravagant wedding gift from Potter Palmer to his bride Bertha Honore and was IMG_6296immediately regarded as one of the most luxurious hotels in Chicago. Speakers included Michael Edwards, president/CEO Chicago Loop Alliance, Greg Cameron, president/CEO of The Joffrey Ballet and Chairman

of the State Street Commission, and Larry Horowitz, executive director of the Historic Hotels of America and Dean Lane, Palmer House General Manager, who thanked the attendees and praised his staff, who speak 25 languages. He shared some of the many firsts the hotel is known for: 1) The first fire-proof building. Potter challenged anyone to start a fire in its guest rooms. 2) The first hotel to install Alexander Graham Bell's original telephone in every guest room. 3) The first use of the "vertical steam railroad," which would later become the elevator. 4) The first

Grant. The hotel hosted a banquet dubbed "the greatest banquet in American history" to commemorate the return of the President's trip around the world. Mark Twain, a friend of the Palmers, served as emcee. online turn in 2020, and all the guests were thrilled to be back together in-person. Every year, the luncheon chooses a charity for the guests to provide gifts for to herald the giving spirit. The crowd of nearly 200 arrived off the elevators carrying basketballs, coloring books and an assortment of toys, all to benefit Kids Above All, a nonprofit which has been caring for children in need since 1894. The Holiday Luncheon supports the valuable work of The Service Club of Chicago and allows its programs to grow and expand. This year’s event raised over $60,000 — another record high set for the year.

They tied the knot on Oct. 9 in a small private ceremony (she wore a magnificent gown by Elda de la Rosa) on the banks of the Big Sable river in NW Michigan where their cabin once stood. Murph said he "became emotional when she said those three little words, 'It's about time!" He added, "They didn't want to rush into anything."…LOL!  The perfect pair are now Mr. & Mrs.!

New year goodbyeI, for one, won't be sad to see 2021 in my rear-view mirror. I feel like we're living in a whole new world now, and not necessarily a better one. The headline says it all, here's hoping for a bigger, brighter year for us all! Almost everyone I know has been sick, either with a bad cold or Covid. I miss our dogs and Chuck and I were both sick during Christmas so we didn't get a chance to Resolutions really celebrate like we wanted to. This means our tree and decor will be staying up a LOT longer this year! I hope my neighbors across the street are fans of the holidays! I also felt like

NYE 2012-13 with Chuck

Here's to a bigger, brighter, healthier New Year!

the season just shot by–everything seemed to be over before it had even begun. Maybe I waited too long to put up my decorations. I know the paper is taking up a lot of my time now so my schedule has definitely changed but I just feel like this year has been a blur. I'm hoping to make (and keep) some New Year resolutions: Don't sweat the small stuff (and believe me, everything is "small stuff" unless it's your loved ones' health); Make yourself your number one priority (if you're not in a good place, nothing else will be either); Carve out time to read more (for fun); When the Thank youweather is nicer, make sure to get out and enjoy nature. I used to be an avid bird watcher. I'm going back to this in 2022; Get organized (magic words that I hope I can make a reality); Add more whimsy to your life (don't be so serious about things); Tell your loved ones you love them every, single day.

And, most of all, I thank you from the bottom of my heart–for sticking with my little blog and me. Your support means the world and I plan on sharing a lot more fun and positivity in 2022 with YOU!

Love,

Candace

As many of you know, I absolutely adore the holidays! I would leave my decor up year round if I could and, as a matter of fact, do have a year-round cabinet filled with antique Christmas items that are too fragile for storage. I'm always curious what other people think about the holidays so I asked a few of my favorite celebrities and Chicago notables to answer a couple of questions for me. 1) What is your favorite gift to

receive?  2) What is your top gift to give? I was surprised and humbled by their thoughtful answers. Chicago Fire actor/hunk and all-around great guy Taylor Kinney loves to gift photographs. He says, "I enjoy shooting black and white photography on 35mm film. If I take a photo of someone and I like the way it turns out, I enjoy the process of

printing it and framing it and giving it to them. That to me is worth Page_1more than something I can buy at a store." I laughed when I read his response to the best gift he ever received. "It was the best and worst gift I've received. It was my first bike. When I was around 5 years-old, I asked Santa Claus for a motorcycle and he brought me something with training wheels. It was the worst because it didn't have a motor. I lost faith in Santa. In the end, I loved the bike because I learned how to ride but I never asked Santa for a motorcycle ever again," Taylor said. Love this/love HIM!

Rick Kogan, writer/speaker extraordinaire.

One of my very favorite writers is Rick Kogan, who's had a column in the Chicago Tribune, among other publications, for a very long time. He writes about Rick-Kogan-at-Ancona-School-006Chicago in ways that make me weep. He doesn't strike me as the sentimental type but his answer about the best gift he's ever received made me think otherwise. "A kiss on the cheek and a silver dollar from a woman dressed as Mrs. Santa Clause at the bygone Tavern Club when I was 10, " he said. His favorite gift to give are "books of all kinds." He and his Kate Murray make such a beautiful pair. You should watch for his work in print, on the radio, TV…well, everywhere!

She said, "I'm a much better gift giver than a receiver. I love to give experiences, especially to my young nieces and nephews. I'll rarely buy them toys. My godson loves the theater so I Img_1241always take him to a show or a play. My niece loves sports so I get tickets to a Cubs or Bulls game. I personalize them to their interests. Those kind of gifts also guarantee quality time together beyond the holidays." Justine Fedak, a longtime corporate powerhouse is retiring. Well, not really, just moving on to her exciting next chapter that I'll get to in a minute. Her retirement party at BMO was a celebration of her long service and a testament to how loved she is. The room was packed with friends, fans and colleagues when confetti guns started firing! In marched every single sports mascot in Chicago to pay homage to Justine. I was proud to be there to witness all the love along with another FOJ,

Michael Caputo. Justine's next chapter involves launching her motivational speaking career. Being on the receiving end of some much needed Justine Advice, I highly recommend her and any and all services she will be providing! She said she has decided to "consciously uncouple" from corporate life and share her story that includes an MS (Multiple Sclerosis) diagnosis; managing mobility/chronic issues; suffering significant personal loss but yet still building an impactful career and a purpose-driven happy life. She's a recognized motivational speaker across the US/Canada. She is also co-principal, with Star Jones, of Instant Impact Group, focused on helping individuals and companies build their diversity, equity and inclusion mindset. Long may you reign Justine! Blog 1 - Art in Gaga;s Barney's windowIs there a more beautiful city in the country than Chicago during the holidays? Granted, New York has a lot to offer – I love those Bergdorf Goodman windows and the Barney’s windows, Blog 2 - Zoolights!this year decorated by Lady Gaga and who could resist that huge snowflake hanging in the center of Fifth Avenue? – but we have that and more (kinda)! I’ve never seen a prettier display than our own Lincoln Park Zoo’s “ZooLights” display. I can Blog 3 - Christkkindlmarket—Daley Plazajust imagine the animals having holiday parties after all of the humans have gone. And who can resist the Christkindlmarket in Daley Plaza? This delightful Blog 4 - a Macy’s window from Christmas pastspot is one of my favorites with its variety of crafts, gifts, entertainment, German food, drinks and more! Macy’s windows are always a must-see attraction and the Joffrey Nutcracker is a beloved holiday tradition. And finally, I don’t believe there is a prettier spot than right here in my own Blog 5 - Old Town fisherman cottagebackyard – the Old Town Triangle. Across the street from us is the most popular house on any Chicago tour, a darling fisherman’s cottage owned by Steppenwolf’s lucky David Blog 6 - Hef’s old home in the Gold CoastHawkanson. I love this city that just keeps getting better and better and better…can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings! Have a happy holiday! (To enjoy more photos from Christmas’ past in Chicago, please click here!)

Blog 1 - RMHC’s COB Paul Huebener, Jamie Haberkorn, Ronald, co-chairs Lesley Goodman, Carol Beitler and MaryAnne Smith This same evening, one of my favorite new spots in town, The Rooftop at Studio Paris, was the scene of a party hosted by The Women’s Auxiliary of Ronald McDonald House Blog 2 - Kimberly Gleeson, Richard Doermer, John and Carol McKinnon and friends Near Lurie Children’s. This benefit was co-chaired by three of the most enthusiastic ladies I know – Carol Beitler, Lesley Goodman and MaryAnne Smith (Coach Lovie’s Blog 3 - Marge Hamm, Anna Treiber, Kathleen Henson, Caroline Kinney and Julie Hamm vivacious wife). Two hundred plus supporters participated in this benefit that raised more than $50,000 to support the Rooftop Retreat of the world’s largest Ronald McDonald House. Debuting Blog 4 - Jami Weiman, Bari Izenstark and Steve Beitler in 2012 and designed to give families a chance to relax and replenish after a day at the hospital, this impressive space will be surrounded by Blog 5 - Rochelle Trotter and Frances Renk nine-foot glass walls with both a family activity area and a meditation garden. Blog 1 - Russell Crowe Film star and Oscar winner Russell Crowe tweeted to his 250,000 followers: "Rode from Algonquin to Lake Geneva (WI). Beautiful place, my first ever visit to Wisconsin. If you are in the area, check out Baker House." Blog 2 - Baker House Well, it just so happens my darling friend, Bethany, OWNS Baker House and this is her report: "Last night (8/25), Russell Crowe arrived (unannounced) at our new restaurant, The Baker House, in Lake Geneva, WI. He came in with two male friends and asked to be seated in our lakefront garden. They were hungry and seemed a bit tired…evidently, turns out he and his two male companions had biked from Algonquin, Blog 3 - Versailles Turret Luxury Suite Illinois, to Lake Geneva, 40 miles, and then spent the day trekking around our scenic 28-mile lake! Russell said it was his FIRST VISIT EVER TO WISCONSIN and Blog 4 thought it was beautiful, and when he left he tweeted to his fans that if ever in the area, they should check out the Baker House! Our staff all wear costumes set in the 1890's through 1920's and Russell was amused asking our waitress if she liked dressing up when she came to work! Blog 5 - Provence Premier Suite When he and his friends left, they said Blog 6 - Bordeaux Premier Room fireplace they had an early day in Chicago or would have spent the night in our luxury hotel rooms that just opened. That would have been awesome!" Truth be told, this beautiful, vintage hotel with a lakefront setting has been on MY hit list for quite some time. My neighbors love it and we have been invited a few times but my schedule has never allowed us to go. Nestled in scenic beauty on Blog 7 - Champagne Luxury Suite Geneva Lake, this hotel was built in 1885 as a summer home for a wealthy family. Situated at 327 Wrigley Dr. in downtown Lake Geneva, this vintage, painted lady boasts 30 rooms, 13 fireplaces, nightly entertainment, a lakefront garden and is a Nationally Registered Historic property. Luxury suites begin at $340 and there are many packages available. I am sure Russell will be returning…and I hope I can meet him for cocktails in the lakefront garden! (With my husband, of course!) (Baker House, 327 Wrigley Dr., downtown Lake Geneva, Wisconsin, 262.248.4700)

Godogood-1 I love feel-good stories, feel good movies and, of course, feel good campaigns! And this one is pretty special. Chicago Loop Alliance, along with the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, in support of their public art initiative, created the “GO DO GOOD” campaign. (You would only miss the brightly-colored yellow signs around town if you were living in a cave, which hopefully you aren’t!) This campaign is a summer long, citywide movement to prepare Chicago’s kids to succeed in school and to also encourage good deeds around town. The theme Events.Par.26414.Image.0.0.1 is based on the Chicago Loop Alliance’s commissioned “Go Do Good” art installation which is a six foot story mural by Midwest based, internationally-acclaimed contemporary artist, Kay Rosen. This 30-second PSA was produced by Julee White’s Testarossa Entertainment in association wih the Illinois Center for Broadcasting (that shot and edited the spot). Check it out (campaign ends on Sept. 10th) and GO DO GOOD!!! :)
