this new normal will look like and it's unnerving for a control freak like me. I don't know how comfortable people will be in larger crowds so where will that leave nonprofits and their critical fundraisers? Virgil Abloh, Off-White founder and Louis Vuitton men's artistic director, spoke about the pandemic and our changing world from a fashion point of view. "I'm inspired that fashion can mean something different out of the end of this. It doesn't feel like it did a year ago. Today it seems useless, in a way: a

The quarantine cooking group seems to be going strong with some fabulous dishes and recipes being shared there (Paul Iacono, Greg Hyder, Beth Heller, Mark Olley and Thomas O'Gorman being standouts). With the future of the newspaper industry in question, I'm focusing more on survival. Who knows what's going to happen

Other friends are planning their exit strategies although I'm not sure where someone can hide from all of this. I think hunkering down with the survival mentality of a pioneer might be the way to go. I'm over hoarding food and supplies but sort of wish I had an underground bunker ready and waiting. I find myself needing to connect more with my good friends. Sister Rosemary Connelly, the heart of the "Heart of Mercy".

Congrats to Misericordia Heart of Mercy on its first virtual fundraiser held on Saturday, June 20 that raised a whopping $1,405,000! This year marked the 60th Misericordia Family Association Benefit which still turned out to be very clever, heartwarming and fulfilling in terms of dollars raised, albeit virtually. The event had been planned and coordinated by Jim Capraro with support from the benefit committee and staff in less than 90 days! The 90 minute event, with lots of cool moving parts, opened with longtime supporter Lou Manfredini (WGN-TV home repair expert) welcoming guests. The "virtual cocktail session" from 6-7 pm, featured pianists Charlie Carpenter and Holly Jennings (co-chair) and

guitarist Jim Splithoff, who performed as silent auction items scrolled across the IMG_0402screen. The program portion of the event opened cleverly with the Star Wars theme followed by a video flyover of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels in a salute to Misericordia's essential workers. Father Jack Clair offered a blessing before

a musical salute to Sister Rosemary Connelly (Misericordia's fabulous and much loved executive director for over 50 years) was performed in the Highland Cathedral with the Shannon Rovers and organist Charlie Carpenter. (All appropriately socially distanced). Supporters appearing

in the video included Caroline Kennedy, Mike Ditka, Joe Maddon, Mayor Lori Lightfoot, co-chairs Holly Jennings and Beth Merlo (with their families), Laurie and Bill McCarthy (MFA chairs), New York Giants Saquon Barkley and Grant Haley and more. Lois Gates (assistant executive director in charge of development) and Mary Pat O'Brien (director and CFO) joined auctioneer Greg

"G-Man" Dellinger during the fundraising portion of the event.  Sister Rosemary said, "Tonight is a celebration of our loving devotion to all our children and adults who call Misericordia home. We have the best family organization in the country. The reason Misericordia is the beautiful home it is today is because we are a community of dreamers. We believe that, not only do our residents have a right to life, but to one worth living. And, although our residents can't create a  good life for themselves, once it is theirs, they

become the gift-givers. Our residents are being cared for tenderly and lovingly and every day our staff creatively challenges them to remain engaged in personal growth, each to the best of their abilities." To date, Misericordia cares for over 600 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities with a staff of 1,000+ across a 31-acre campus, with a new drive-by Misericordia Hearts & Flour Bakery being planned now.

A Silver Lining founder Dr. Sandy Goldberg and Greg Hines.

I'm a big fan of Dr. Sandy Goldberg and her wonderful A Silver Lining Foundation that provides breast health support for those in need. So, when I heard that the 18th annual Tasting Stars event, which supports ASLF, was going to be virtual, I was at my computer and ready on Saturday, June 13 at 7pm. Paul Lisnek (of WGN-TV) emceed this virtual champagne event that would normally have been held at the DIRTT Environmental Solutions space (325 N. Wells) with magnificent views of the Loop and river. I'm always curious to see how the various nonprofits are able to pivot to virtual for the first time and this one, despite a few technical difficulties, went off without a hitch and was very informative and entertaining. Viewers tuned into YouTube Live for the hour long event

that opened with jazz pianist Anthony Pocetti (who performed beautiful standards intermittently throughout the presentation). Viewers were able to purchase "French Food Boxes" from the Entertaining Company (a longtime supporter) before the event in keeping

with the event's French theme. Lisnek introduced a video explaining ASLF's impact, how it came to be and the important work it's doing in the community. The video opened with one of the most dynamic singers I know, Opal Staples (of the famed Staples gospel family). Her singing always brings me to tears and this time was no exception. Her rendition of "Rise Up" is mind blowing (see video here). WGN-TV's

Micah Materre was also a contributor and spoke about the people the organization serves. Dr. Sandy spoke passionately about her nonprofit that was born in 2002 after she was IMG_0063diagnosed with breast cancer. She recalled having access to "everything that she needed during that journey." And when she realized others weren't as fortunate, she and her husband, Greg Hines, co-founded the org at their kitchen table with one donation. The programs have grown over the last 17 years to include five programs 1) The Chicagoland Cancer Information Coalition (which

IMG_0184

provides research and outreach), 2) Buy A Mom A Mammogram (ASLF now funds all breast health testing, screenings through biopsies for under-insured, un-insured and undocumented women and men). 3) The Evelyn IMG_0073Goldberg Mammography Center (renamed at UI Health in honor of Sandy's late mother) 4) Keep aBreast (a program designed specifically for young people) and 5) Survive to Thrive (a support program for those already diagnosed). Dr. Sandy said, "The women and men we deal with at A Silver Lining Foundation feel like they don't matter. They feel like nobody cares and that they're alone in the world. This is NOT the premise on which this foundation is based. We turn NO ONE away! We need you to RISE UP and help us make sure no one goes unrecognized. We feel everyone deserves a chance to survive." Tasting Stars co-founder IMG_0057(with wife Ann) Brent Carstensen spoke about the nonprofit's champagne partnership with master IMG_0079sommelier, Sir Charles Stanfield. Traditionally, at past events, Sir Charles would "saber" a cork off a bottle of champagne to start the event so, this year, a video was shown of him doing it virtually so the tradition could remain intact. Tasting Stars has raised and distributed

over $600,000 to the cause since its founding 18 years ago. The event closed with Dr. Sandy awarding the annual Evelyn Goldberg Memorial Award to the "Tasting Stars

Family." In 2019, ASLF stats showed: 15 partner hospitals; 1,487 women served; 227 zip codes served; 1,965 tests funded with 18 diagnoses discovered. ASLF's signature fundraiser, A Sterling Event, will be held on Saturday, October 3. The virtual event closed with a champagne toast and the announcement that the event has raised over $60,000! (And, as Dr. Sandy added, "with no charging for tickets and no silent and live auctions!")

RefuSHE Fashion Challenge winning designer Concetta Cipriano (lower left) with her design worn by model Eleanor Simon.

RefuSHE hosted its first virtual Fashion Challenge on June 19, in celebration of World Refugee Day, with seven talented, emerging designers: Amy Fenderson, Concetta Cipriano, Fraley Le, Lagi Nadeau,  Kate VanAsten, Taylor Graves and Xochil Herrera Scheer. The concept this year consisted of a virtual fashion show inspired by Project Runway with designers showing their looks using fabrics and materials sourced from RefuSHE's Artisan Collective, a program that fosters leadership and business skills through the production of hand-dyed fabrics and scarves that are created by girls and women in the organization. The nonprofit was co-founded by Anne Sweeney and Talyn Good in East Africa to protect and support separated and orphaned girls and young women who often fell through the gaps of protection,

becoming invisible and vulnerable. They are the first and only organization dedicated to refugee girls in Kenya. The virtual event included remarks from Tamasha Rimba, Associate Director of 3fdb1b97-8794-48b0-82f4-ab51810e0f9dCase management and Safe House in Kenya. She spoke about the wide range of services the org provides to every girl who comes into the organization with the priority being the provision of basic needs–access to food, clothing, water, shelter and medication. She said, "Most of our girls are survivors of war and sexual-based gender based violence and also young mothers." Tamasha shared the story of a young 15-year-old

malnourished." She flourished under RefuSHE nurturing and programming. Geoffrey Thige, executive director, took viewers on a virtual journey to Kenya where they saw the campus through the eyes of the women there. He said, "There are more than 18 million displaced people in Sub Saharan West Africa and over half are under the age of 18." Before the runway show, final (powerful)

comments were delivered by RefuSHE alumna Chantale Zuzi who told a harrowing story of how she survived as an albino woman in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Her mother was encouraged to abort her but she refused. Chantale said albino children were used for sacrificial purposes there and not figured viable in this society. She's now living and thriving in the U.S. while getting an education that she hopes to use to help her people. Judges for the runway show included Cheryle Jackson (CEO of Grit + Grace), Kahindo Mateene (founder/designer of KAHINDO), Monica Singh

(designer and UN Women Youth Ambassador) and Travis Paul Martin (executive director of PR at Skoog). The Fashion Challenge event celebrated the power of philanthropy and fashion's ability to tell a story through art and the stories were colorful, joyful, hopeful and amazing. Each designer was paired with a RefuSHE participant who served as their muses. Viewers voted for their favorite designers donating $20 per vote with designer Concetta Cipriano taking away the win for this year's Challenge with glam model Eleanor Simon. The event raised $124,037 with 100% of proceeds going towards RefuSHE's transformational model of care for young refugee women, girls, and their children in East Africa and around the world. To learn more abut this remarkable nonprofit, click here  and see all of the beautiful designs in photo below.

The late Bunky Cushing and Hazel Barr at DOT in 2010.

With all of my nonprofit fundraisers temporarily suspended, I decided to take a look back at some of the more popular events. One of my favorites is the Service Club of Chicago's "Day on the Terrace" fashion show. It's typically hosted the first Monday in

August at the Peninsula. It's such an exciting show because so many of our local men and women (and members) participate–it's sort of like a social family reunion. This year, the event will be virtual on the same date, Monday, August 3 (11 am to 12:30 pm). Join the watch party and enjoy a fabulous production created by co-chairs Jean Antoniou, Tracey Tarantino DiBuono, Sharyl Mackey and Jamie Thorsen in collaboration with BlackOak Technical Productions! The ticket price, $100, will include a Look Book that will be mailed out prior to the show (buy a page and advertise your

business, salute your friends, etc.) (Fab illustration by Elda De la Rosa) (DOT info here! ) It won't be like being in the same room with friends but it's great that they're soldiering on, as the SC has done for the last 130 years! The SC is unique because of the fact that 100% of the funds raised goes directly to charity. This year, its Philanthropic Grant Program awarded over $440,000 to 38 nonprofits. The organization

does not give the grantees a check. Instead, they assist, improve and enlarge upon agency programs. The Albany Park Community Center requested (and received) a used van. The Apparel Industry Foundation received laptops and lockers and The Council for Jewish Elderly received security cameras. The grants are awarded across a variety of deserving nonprofits and helps recipients expand facilities, improve equipment and initiate new programs which

will better serve a large number of people in need. I served on the Philanthropic Committee one year and it was life changing. To see the needs that are so great and to know that you've helped somehow in a small or large way is rewarding beyond comprehension. I applaud all the members of this remarkable organization and can't wait till we can all be together again, celebrating another successful event. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy these photos from past events. Also, mark your calendars for another SC event, "A Very Patriotic Zoom Cocktail Party" on Thursday, July 2 in collaboration with Steak 48! Special thanks to all of our local designers who have made the Elda pivot to mask-making! One of my favorite designs was created by Chicago's own Elda de la Rosa! Monogramming is the very latest in mask wear and one of these beauties can be yours for only $25! Contact Elda here!

That's it for this week. As always, stay safe, sane and civil. Call your friends, bake decadent desserts and read that book that's been in your drawer forever and I'll see you again soon!

Love, as always,

The love in the room was palpable for fashion designer and hometown hero Peach Carr, three of her fellow Project Runway All Stars, and the nonprofit they came together to support, JourneyCare, the country's largest non-profit

organization providing hospice, home health, palliative and pediatric hospice care. The event at Theater on the Lake on Saturday, June 29 attracted an overflow crowd for an exciting fashion show presented by the All Stars of Project Runway designers Joshua Christensen, Johnathan Kayne Gillaspie, Korto Momolu, Christopher Palu and, of course, Peach! Joe Matty, president JourneyCare Foundation, opened the show by encouraging all of the clinical team members in the audience to stand and be recognized. He said, "Right now, we have around 1500 clinicians and care members taking

JourneyCare is there. We're a family and we take care of each other. Our promise is to meet the patients where they are, build trust and share a journey. JourneyCare has never turned anyone away due to inability to pay. We offer programs that include integrative therapies (pet, massage, art and music), Jewish Care Services and our "We Honor Veterans" program. Despite the benefits of these special programs, they are not reimbursable through Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance." Allison Rosati, of NBC-5, served as emcee. (Peach was also a co-chair). The fashion show, expertly produced by ZZAZZ Productions, began with a thrilling video of Chicago created by Eric Hines. Designer Johnathan Kayne opened the show with a dramatic shocking pink evening gown delicately embellished with a crystal neckline followed by flowing gowns in bold colors. boots, gowns slit-up-to-there and plunging necklines. The show closed with a standing ovation as Peach showed her first collection following a horrible accident that left her wondering if she would ever be able to design again. Well, this show proved she could and in spades! The audience roared as every single new design made its appearance on the runway. From colorful cocktail dresses with the Chicago skyline outlined in jet black

beadwork to a chic black and white number with a big bow at the edge to a skirt with the British flag emblazoned all over it, the collection was pure Peach–whimsical, wearable, washable and on trend. When designing, Peach always asks herself, "Would Edie Sedgewick wear this?"…And the resounding answer is EVERYONE wants to wear this! For the finale, Peach sent her longtime "bestie" Camerone

brought in over $52,000 with the event raising approximately $200,000 for the nonprofit. For 40 years,  JourneyCare teams have served patients and families living with advanced illnesses so that each may live with dignity and comfort. It was a night I won't soon forget and a privilege to be in the room to witness the love and support for Peach, her fellow Project Runway designers who came out on her behalf, and this most deserving nonprofit.

AA_20190627_RenOne_0003Pride parties were happening all over Chicago including the underground South Side pride festival that took place on June 27 at the Promontory in Hyde Park. Red Bull Music hosted AA_20190627_RenOne_0014Red Bull Presents: Renaissance One – an amazing pride event that featured exciting DJ sets and performances BbyMutha, TT the Artist, Kidd Kenn, Blu Bone, DJ Hijo Pródigo, Professor-Wrecks and DJ Rae Chardonnay. Renaissance One's mission was to elevate these progressive artists while paying tribute to Chicago’s LGBTQ+ pioneers before the city’s 2019 Pride celebrations on June 30th. In 1970, following the Stonewall riots, a gay liberation AA_20190627_RenOne_0009organization formed at the University of Chicago and AA_20190627_RenOne_0017 sponsored a dance at the South Side’s Coliseum Annex which would become the first-ever public lesbian and gay dance event (aside from Halloween drag balls that were already happening). Following the dance, these energized organizers led a campaign to make the Normandy on Rush Street Chicago’s first gay bar to secure a license and permit same-sex dancing. Kudos to Windy City Live's Ryan Chiaverini! If you think he's just a hunky daytime talk show co-host, think again! His new song, "This is Country," is a real toe-tapper! And it doesn't hurt to have "Eye of the Tiger's" Jim Peterik on your team either! Check it out below and congrats, with love, Ryan!

We attended the July 8 official opening night of Meredith Willson's "Music Man" at the Goodman Theatre and, even though I had visions of Robert Preston's iconic version in my head, this production (directed by Tony-Award winning director Mary Zimmerman) was a wonderfully nostalgic and delightful trip back to River City. The show has spectacular (and complicated) choreography, hum-able musical favorites and a superior cast. The opening night dinner honored Zimmerman's 25th anniversary as an Artistic Associate with the Goodman. The production headed for Broadway from here with Hugh Jackman playing the lead. See it before it leaves on August 18!

We're finally enjoying the summer we've been waiting for (and deserve!) here in Chicago and I hope everyone is having a chance to enjoy it. The July 4th celebrations made me so proud to live in the U.S.A. and the long weekend offered us a chance to enjoy good friends and fine weather along the lakefront. I love all the neighborhood celebrations too with friend Raleigh Chin noting that she could see fireworks popping up all around the city from her apartment. Why can't we just legalize them already and save everyone long trips to Indiana!? Just sayin'…..

Love, as always,

Candace

Nick Caprio and Matt Jacobi

Nick Caprio and Matt Jacobi tied the knot in Scottsdale!

More love in the air! Super cuties Matt Jacobi and Nick Caprio were married over Memorial Day weekend at The Scottsdale Resort at McCormick Ranch. The Kkcouple made international news in December when they created a custom “Same Sex Barbie Wedding Set” for their 8-year-old niece’s birthday. Jacobi and Caprio wanted to give their niece, something special for her birthday since she and her little sister, would be flower girls in the couple’s wedding. When the couple could not find a toy that was reflective of their wedding or IMG_4185special bond with their nieces, they created their own! IMG_4183The couple exchanged vows in front of 160 guests and toasted to all the LGBTQ freedom fighters and allies that helped make marriage equality the law of the land. The couple were the first same sex couple to get Ukntitledmarried at the resort and tasked event experts at Juliet Le Fleur, Glamour & Woods, and Southwest Teepee to surprise them on their wedding day. The two grooms left all the U99ntitleddetails up to the wedding vendors so they had no idea what to expect of their wedding décor until they walked down the aisle. I'd say they were pretty happy! Congrats with love, Matt and Nick! (Everlemon Events, photos by Leland Gebhardt Photography)

The preeminent jeweler, then and now, designed the jewels that epitomized glamour and lit up posh Manhattan supper clubs. The sheer exuberance of this magical moment in American life pervaded Rockefeller Center, scene of the Ball that took place within a 31-foot-high Tiffany Blue Box covering the center’s famous 15,000-square-foot ice rink. URBAN GATEWAYS’ “ART FOR ALL” GALA SPOTLIGHTS ITS POETS AND DANCERS

Blog 1 - Linda Johnson Rice (L) and friend with co-chairs Cheryl and Eric McKissackUrban Gateways’ artists were the highlights of the evening for its annual Art for All Gala held at Venue One. Two hundred fifty guests attended this benefit to introduce the arts into Blog 2 - Tarrah Cooper, Mayor’s Press Secretary, with her cute momthe lives of children in Chicago. Co-chair Eric McKissack said, “Cheryl [McKissack] and I were very pleased to co-chair this event with Nick and Susan Pritzker. Urban Gateways is near and dear to all of us. The work of UG as a pioneer and leader in arts education helps to develop the Blog 3 - Catherine Kirk, Tyronne Stoudemire, Abe Thompson, Valerie Stoudemirecreative potential of more than 100,000 young people a year in Chicago.” The night began with a cocktail reception and silent auction that featured the artwork of many talented UG artists. There were original works Blog 4 - Elements Contemporary Balletby Karolina Gnatowski, Jeff Maldonado and Kate Walsh. James Jankowiak donated an abstract acrylic on canvas while Nicole Beck created a steel maquette of one of her public sculptures Blog 5 - UG teaching artist Michael Riendeauat Dubuque’s Grand River Center. (Some other auction items included an “instant memory wine cellar” with personal notes affixed to each bottle that sold for $4,500.) After the guests had perused the auction offerings, emcee and president and CEO of the Better Government Association Andy Blog 6 - With UG Executive Director Eric Delli Bovi and emcee Andy ShawShaw took to the stage and stated, “Urban Gateways provides art experiences that the public schools can’t offer. In a perfect world, this would all be done there. They’re not doing what must be done. They’re not stepping up.” Andy is Blog 6not afraid to speak his mind and always tells it like it is – so refreshing! And then the highlight of the evening: the live performances by Urban Gateways touring artists! First up was Elements Contemporary Ballet, Blog 7 - Poet Lamar Jordanfounded in 2005 by artistic director Mike Gosney. These elegant dancers combined the beauty of classical technique with the intensity of innovative contemporary dance. Young Chicago Authors’ Louder Than a Bomb Blog 8 - Li
sa Newman and Angela Thompsonpoets held the audience in the palm of their hands as they recited their views of the world. Malcolm Lundy’s poem, “Letter to My Unborn Daughter,” was a touching and cautionary tale about what he wants his future daughter to know about life and men especially. “You are preordained to despise your origins and me.” When speaking of future suitors, he said they “inhale virginities and Blog 8 - Poet Malcolm Lundyexhale excuses.” He ended the poem with “my princess, never lose your fairytale endings. I pinky promise to be a great father.” Needless to say, there wasn’t a dry eye in the house. A female poet with the single name of George delivered a powerful poem Blog 10 - Chelsea and Jim Smithcalled “My Father’s Promises.” Lamar Jordan’s “Be Step” poem spoke about the joys of this dance form calling it “the choreography of kings.” If you’re not familiar with Louder Than a Bomb, Jon Siskel created a fantastic film by the same name that I highly recommend. The premise surrounds the competition. Every year, more than 600 teenagers from 60-plus Chicago Blog 11 - Emcee Andy Shawarea schools gather for the world’s largest youth poetry slam, a competition known as Louder Than a Bomb. Founded in 2001, Louder Than a Bomb is the only event of its kind in the country – a youth poetry slam built around teams. Blog 12 - FootworKINGz charming the audienceRather than emphasize individual poets and performances, its structure demands that kids work collaboratively with their peers – presenting, critiquing and rewriting their pieces. To succeed, teams have to create an Blog 13environment of mutual trust and support. For many kids, being a part of such an environment in an academic context is life-changing. The movie is spellbinding just like these young poets were Blog 14on this night. The next act, a nationally recognized dance crew founded by UG teaching artist Leida “Lady Sol” Villegas, brought the crowd to its feet. FootworKINGz performed a high-energy dance number that defied gravity. They have appeared on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent” and MTV’s “America’s Best Dance Crew.” You Blog 15really have to see them to believe it. Guests seen mixing and mingling included Linda Johnson Rice, Abe and Angela Thompson, Valerie and Tyronne Stoudemire, Theaster Gates, Dawoud Bey, Stephanie and Gary Cole, Michelle Askew, Blog 16 - FootworKINGz dance memberTarrah Cooper, Kay and Jim Mabie, Ruth Horwich and Judith Venturino. Urban Gateways is one of the largest and most comprehensive arts education organizations in the country and a recipient of the White House “Medal of Blog 17 - Venue sceneArts.” For more than 50 years, UG has brought the arts into the lives of millions of children in Chicago. Blog 1 - Event Chair Richard Wester, GPC Alliance President Eunita Rushing and emcee LeeAnn TrotterIf you missed this year’s fourth annual Fleurotica Fashion Show, please put it on your calendars NOW for next year! I’ve never seen anything quite like this show which benefitted Garfield Park Conservatory with all of the designs created from Blog 2flowers, leaves, moss and any other type of plant material imaginable. The backstage action was almost as exciting as the runway with designers scrambling to get the last petal glued on before the show began. Even real life fashion designer Peach Carr showed a stunning creation titled “Driving Miss Daisy” to wild applause, with styling and makeup by AJ’s Salon (who was there filming his Blog 8Chicagolicious” reality show). Judging was difficult with all of the breathtaking designs but Borris P

and Adam Schwerner seemed to have a lot of fun doing it and awarded “Best in Show” to Blumgarten & Blog 9Co.’s Lance Larsen. Darling LeeAnn Trotter (NBC 5 entertainment reporter) returned as emcee this year and did a great job, of course! Who doesn’t love LeeAnn?! She introduced the president of Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance, Eunita Rushing, who reminded us that all proceeds from this event will help to rebuild the roof of the Conservatory which was Blog 10 - Nena Ivon (R) and frienddamaged by a freak hailstorm last summer. REDMOON’S SPECTACLE LUNATIQUE IS A MOVEABLE FEAST

…COSTUME COUNCIL HOSTS HAL RUBENSTEIN, FACE THE FUTURE FOUNDATION GALA, THE BEST FRENCH TEACHER, HORACIO NIETO PRESENTS, WATCH312’S VIP CLUB PLUS ANOTHER NEW VIDEO AND MORE!

Blog 1 - Dr. Lauren Streicher (2nd from L), co-chair Sarah Beardsley and friendsI have been to quite a few galas and fundraisers in my day, but never have I seen such a visual feast like Redmoon Theater’s “Spectacle Lunatique” at the Hudson Club on March 17th. Everywhere you looked, there was something to delight your senses. Financier Byron Trott with Development Director Sean KaplanTheater members and volunteers were riding bicycles dressed in exotic garb serving cosmos from teakettles! Giant colorful balloons would surprise you around corners and you saw people sleeping in flying and twirling bathtubs, a guy scribbling in an ancient notebook high atop a burned-out Victorian room, Blog 3people dressed as huge birds on 20-foot-long flying bicycles…I tell ya, I thought I had seen just about everything until this gala night – it was surreal! One guest described it as “being right out of a Fellini movie” and I couldn’t agree more! From the very start, upon entering the venue (which Blog 4 - Saira Mohan and Christoper Cooper (R) with friendtruly used to be an old Hudson car dealership), the excitement began with at least 50 theater members forming a gauntlet for guests. As you walked through the gauntlet, wild applause began as if you were an actor receiving accolades. And they did this for EVERY SINGLE GUEST! Blog 5 - HGTV’s Kevin Grace and cute Table LadyAll through the night, I could hear the applause and it brought a smile to my face. I could imagine some needy guests going in and out multiple times just to hear the applause! It was so cool! The VIP reception, which started earlier than the actual event, began in Blog 6 - Dawn Mattozzi and friendthe front of the venue near its 2222 S. Michigan address. (Guests actually entered from the rear on Wabash since the food trucks were all accessed from there.) The reception, designed in part by the dynamic HGTV star Kevin Grace, was loaded with fantastic and fantastical food stations. The VIP Lounge chefs included David Posey Blog 7 - Pierre Desy and Michel Desjardins with cute friend(Blackbird), Efrain Cuevas (Clandestino Supper Club), Valerie Bolon (Culinary Speakeasy), Jeff Pikus (Maude’s Liquor Bar), Jason Vincent (Nightwood), Duncan Biddulph (Rootstock) and Joshua Kulp (Sunday Dinner Club). Food trucks were well represented with the Brown Blog 8Bag Lunch Truck, Chicago Schnitzel King, Tamale Spaceship, Wagyu Wagon, Curry Cruiser and Hummingbird Kitchen offering up delicious dishes. Delicious desserts were prepared and served by emerging pastry students from the French Pastry School. After the VIP reception, guests were directed into the next room, the aptly-named Spectacle Hall, for a unique fundraising “ask.” Blog 9 - Ted Tetzlaff, MJ and Rob Fasan and Sarah BeardsleyTheater members were gathered onstage and began singing for donations…an opera singer would sing out the amount and then the rest of the group would sing Blog 10a refrain. It was one of the most clever ways to ask for money that I’ve seen in a long time and it must’ve been effective since I saw people waving and raising their hands all over the room! After this unique display, there was a digital countdown to the main event which, in and of itself, made the room hum with expectant excitement. And then the machines were started up and the Blog 11 - Mary Ann Youngpageantry began in earnest. All sorts of wild displays of imagination began their turn around the venue and all the while, there were surprising games, smaller displays and a silent auction positioned all around the Blog 12edges of the room. I felt like I had fallen down the rabbit hole and I didn’t know where to look first! Guests must’ve drained their iPhone capacities capturing it all on their cameras!  From 10:30 p.m. until dawn, the space became a huge dance party with more food catered by friends of Redmoon including Manny’s Deli. Redmoon’s directors Jim Lasko and Frank Maugeri said that “this night’s gala was a first Jesse Garza and Pamela Sage with Tina and Byron Trottstep towards a new large-scale public spectacle that Redmoon is planning to build using the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice as a point of departure. We will be performing installments Blog 14 - Chicago Mag’s Carmen Rivera and friendof the piece in high-traffic public venues which will be guerrilla-style, pre-announced, promoted and curated affairs. Some will be brief parades exploring a single contraption. Others may be 15-minute-long performances focused on a narrative event.” Proceeds from this gala will directly fund Redmoon’s artistic Blog 15mission of community building through the company’s award-winning Neighborhood Arts Programming, public art events and a fraction of the costs associated with Blog 16 - Food Dude David Lissner (R) and friendrunning an internationally touring, Chicago-centric not-for-profit arts organization. I just can’t wait to see where they lead us next!!! (Fab photos by Mila Samokhina.)

DESIGNER BORRIS POWELL WOWS THE CHICAGO FASHION CROWD!

…PLUS BEAR NECESSITIES GALA, CHICAGO FASHION FOUNDATION’S “STREET STYLE,” TCW MAG’S SINGLES SOIREE, UPCOMING EVENTS, PALMER HOUSE COUP, THREE NEW WATCH312.COM VIDEOS AND MORE!

Blog 1 - The one and only Borris PowellThe Without a Shadow of a Doubt Fashion Show presented by local designer Borris Powell set a very high standard for Chicago fashion shows recently at the River East Art Center. Opening with chic fashions from Blog 2 - PR Queen Daphne Ortiz (R) and cute friendsLincoln Park's newest boutique, STRUT, owner Niala Conte sent models down the runway in wearable and accessible outfits that made you want to rush to her store at 2549 N. Clark St. And indeed, guests could shop in her pop-up store after the show with a 20-percent discount thrown in for good measure. Being the ultimate showman, you never know Blog 3 - The Bears' Rashied Daviswhat to expect from Mr. Borris Powell but when the red Ferrari powerfully hummed into the middle of the event Blog 4 - Joking with co-host Marcus Rileydriven by two gorgeous models, both wearing red, the crowd just lost it! It sat there front and center throughout Borris' faultless fashion show. For the first time, Borris presented his menswear line to wild applause. Special guest Rashied Davis of the Chicago Bears was wearing the very first men's suit that Borris had created as he told the crowd about his wonderful foundation that he and his wife Dianna founded, The Rashied Davis Charities, which teaches Blog 5 - Shea Vaughn and beautiful friendstudents how to overcome obstacles. And then the show! I was thrilled and honored to co-host with NBC's Marcus Riley, who made quite a fashion statement himself: He was wearing all local designers and his girlfriend, Nicole Townsend, was beaming with Sally and Kerry Shorr with Monika Dixonpride. Factor models glided down the runway in fashions that made me swoon. Borris' latest handbag, which was premiered on this night, can be used by both sexes and is the perfect shade of chocolate that will match every outfit for fall. His use of pops of color with more classic looks was the perfect mix for now. I loved the full length leather gown and his extra-wide belts, which were shown with lots of the ensembles. This new wide shape was modern and new and I want one in every Blog 7 - Hot STRUT lookcolor! The makeup (by Brenda Blog 8 - STRUT’s Niala Conte with her finale dressArelano, among others) was simple and clean with a bright red mouth. Hair by Nevena Zee from the Custom Hair Lounge & Spa also echoed the makeup with classic shapes and men's looks inspired by Italian Vogue – slicked back and sleek. The menswear collection had something for every type of
male from the buttoned-up businessman to the guy channeling his inner Marc Jacobs. Quenten Schumacher already has his eye on the copper colored statement suit…so heads-up Blog 9 - Great menswear look by Borrishere, Borris! And when the man himself came out for his final bows with that winning smile that we all love, the crowd was sitting in the palm of his hand. As he danced along behind the Blog 10 - Charron (wearing Borris) with cute friendsFerrari as it hummed out of the ballroom, we knew we had all just witnessed fashion magic! Long may you reign, Borris!!! (To see ALL event pics by Caitlin Saville Collins and Mitchell Canoff, please click here and check out my Watch312.com coverage below!)
