Fashion and business phenom Diane Von Furstenberg

In 1976, Newsweek named Diane von Furstenberg ‘the most marketable woman since Coco Chanel’. In a one-of-a-kind Executives’ Club of Chicago Signature Series discussion on November 14, fashion mogul Furstenberg shared highlights from her decades long career in fashion and philanthropy during a sold-out luncheon at the Radisson Blu Aqua. Clad in a chic knit leopard print sweater and skirt with black boots, the fashion icon was joined by moderator, Kristina O’Neill, WSJ Magazine, editor and veteran of the New York magazine industry, who conducted the hour long interview. Diane shared her most recent philanthropic work as chair of the fund-raising for the much anticipated Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island in New York City. They discussed the importance of utilizing one’s voice, knowledge and connections to uplift

liberties and freedoms in this country and in particular for women empowerment. Margaret Mueller, ECC president/CEO and Tracie Morris, US Chief HR and Inclusion Officer BMO Financial Group, welcomed the crowd along with new ECC Chief

Content and Communications Officer, Eva Penar. Diane has dedicated her life to empowering women all over the world through her philanthropic efforts. She was born of Belgian Jewish parents. Her mother survived Auschwitz, being liberated weighing only 49 pounds. 18 months later, Diane was born. She told the crowd, after her mother suffered in the camp, she never allowed Diane to show fear even going so far as locking her in the closet when she was afraid of the dark. In 1974, Furstenberg introduced the wrap dress that would make her world famous at 23 years of age. By the time she was 28, she had 18 licensing agreements. She shared many words of wisdom with the rapt crowd including the following: 1) "I promise you, the most important relationship you have is with yourself. Once you have that, every other relationship is a plus and not a must." 2) The only thing you have 100% control over is your character. You can lose your health but you never lose your character." 3) "The secret to life is owning it. If you own your

imperfections, they become an asset and if you own your vulnerability, it becomes your strength." 4) "At least twice a week I wake up feeling like a loser. The only people who don't feel this way are the losers." 5) "Make sure you engage with

someone once a week that no one pays attention to. It will expand your universe and theirs."  6) "Serving as a mentor is a nice way to stay relevant as you grow older and it works because you're not a threat to them then."  7) "It's very important that we fight violence, abuse and inequality." 8) "I did an interview and was asked what I wanted to be now, I told them I wanted to be an oracle." She ended her fascinating discussion with this. "If I'm lucky, I'm in the autumn of my life and it's great because in the autumn, the foliage is the most beautiful. It's a wonderful time. I have a lot to give and share." She received thunderous applause and a standing ovation. What a great afternoon! Happy BD Leslie!

It was a complete takeover of the elegant Marchesa restaurant at 535 N. Wells on Thursday, November 21 when auction maven Leslie Hindman threw a spectacular

birthday party for her 65th with around 120 FOLs (friends of Leslie's) in attendance! Everybody who was anybody was there including the Governor and his MK, Linda Johnson Rice, Neal Zucker and Marko Iglendza, Robin and Mark Tebbe, Ken Norgan, Michael Kutza, Mary Lou Gorno, Trish Rooney, Les Coney, Suzette and Alan Bulley, Michael Sneed, Judy Erwin, Don and Maron Hindman,

Christie Hefner, Helen Melchior and so many others. The party began in the intimate wine room on the lower level. There, a duo sang and played French music as chicly clad guests mixed and mingled. Then the party moved

to the main floor where tables were topped in crystal and silver with gorgeous white flowers. Place cards directed guests to their seats–not happy about being separated from Chuck but was grateful to be included. Loving toasts were presented by her brother Don and her longtime friend Mike Sneed, among others. Everyone sang the praises of this loyal, much loved friend

before a birthday cake sailed out of the kitchen amid blazing sparklers. Dinner, prepared by Chef Didier Durand, was exquisite, as one would expect from this top rated French restaurant. Desserts were served on the top floor, which is my favorite. There, the decor makes you feel

like you're in a 19th century French chateau–all antiques and oil paintings (many from Leslie's auction house). Singer Bradford Newquist, whose real job is Director of Development for the wonderful Gilda's Club, performed hits from the Great American IMG_1205Songbook dressed in a bright red vest, so perfect for the evening. The love in the space was palpable for Leslie whose next chapter, I hope, is filled with all of the joy she's so freely and lavishly given to others. Here's to 65 more Leslie! Israel "Izzy" Idonije, entrepreneur, humanitarian, former NFL player and all-around nice guy, broke ground on the FBRK Impact House at 200 W. Madison Street on November 13. Set to open in March 2020, the 45,000 square-foot space will be the city’s first innovation-focused philanthropy center dedicated to serving and supporting grant makers, family foundations and impact investors. Local foundations, media and notable Chicagoans attended the groundbreaking event, which revealed design plans, reinforced the need for the IMG_0841facility and further discussed the vision for the new space. FBRK Impact House, founded by Izzy and friends, is the result of a shared vision between FBRK, Field Foundation, Woods Fund, United States Artists and Forefront, with the core desire to unify Chicago’s Impact Community, break down silos, encourage collaboration and provide greater access to opportunities. a membership-based work club with a thoughtfully designed ecosystem to provide a balance of private offices, work space, meeting and conference rooms where impact organizations can work together, collaborate and operate with greater efficiency. “Chicago is filled with wonderful people who are committed to making our city better,” said Idonije. “FBRK Impact House will offer an inviting, transparent environment to foster relationships among organizations — a framework in which the philanthropic community will thrive.” According to the most recent Giving in Illinois report, there

Together, these organizations have reached a giving record of $4.6 billion in 2016 – collectively nearly tripling the amount of giving since 2006. Despite this, challenges for grant-making institutions often include working in isolation, having laborious application and review practices and being intimidating to approach. FBRK Impact House will provide a creative and safe space for these organizations to meet, conceive ideas and collaborate. "Tunneling" with the one and only, Mamie Walton.

Had a fabulous lunch with the one and only Mamie Walton at RL recently. She rivals my favorite model, Carmen dell'Orefice, in looks and glamour with personality plus. She needs her own reality show. I asked her for some beauty tips and she told me she exercises religiously, at the barre of course! It's no wonder she's so limber. And I raced to Saks following

lunch to buy the same makeup she uses since her skin is so flawless (DIOR Airflash, you're welcome). She is so involved and curious, it's no wonder she looks like she's 50 at age 91. And no, this isn't a typo. She is much loved and endlessly fascinating. On the day we lunched, it was bitter cold outside but she was wrapped in a light (chic) coat. I asked her if she didn't get cold coming from the Peninsula and she told me no since she used the tunnels. WHAT?! My head snapped around since I'd never knew anything like this existed. Well, she was kind enough to walk me through them (not open to the public, just for deliveries and Mamie!) and it was so cool! You can literally walk completely underground from the Pen to RL. Who knew? Now we all do! Lol!

Robert Garvey and Dana Hokin Garvey at Robert's Pizza.

Robert's Pizza and Dough Co. isn't exactly new, it opened on May 17, but it was new to us until recently. When we found this charming spot on the river at 465 N. McClurg Ct., we were happy IMG_1215 to see its affable co-owner and pizza maverick Robert Garvey hanging out at the bar with customers. He and his charming wife, Dana Hokin Garvey, have been perfecting their/his delicious pizza recipes for a Untitledlong, long time–beginning first with a restaurant at the family owned Bitter End Yacht Club, that was lost during the last hurricane but is in the rebuilding process. Robert told me he has tried literally over 1000s of recipes before landing on his top 13 that includes ingredients IMG_1161like carmelized onions, house-made pepperoni and sausage, Brussels sprouts and bacon, seafood, fennel, duck, the classic and more. The house-made meatballs will give you nighttime cravings. When the pizza restaurant was located at the Bitter End Yacht Club, even Virgin Group's Richard Branson couldn't resist serving Robert's pizzas at his daughter's rehearsal dinner! We highly recommend this spot, that in the spring/summer, will also have an outdoor patio and space for docking boats. Our Balsam Hill Silverado Slim Flip Tree. (Also changes to color and a combo with a dimmer.)

I know some would say it's too soon, but our Christmas decor has been up for quite a while now and we're loving every minute of it. I posted a video of Chuck setting up our new Balsam Hill Silverado Slim Flip Tree (watch video here) and I'm telling you, it's

changed our lives. We have struggled with fake (and real) trees, falling apart in too many pieces, failing light strands and so much more for so long, that I was more than ready for change. When we dragged our old one out of storage and it, yet again, failed to light, I almost threw it over the balcony. Coincidentally, this was the same day the Balsam Hill catalog arrived (it was almost

IMG_1565

like they knew). I flipped through it and thought the trees looked nice but it wasn't until I came across the flip tree that I became laser focused. I watched their installation video online and was immediately hooked. When it arrived, all it needed was a little branch fluffing to IMG_0984 make it look like the Christmas miracle that it is. Every single ornament fit and the branches sweep almost to the floor. I couldn't love it more. Not gonna lie, it was a little pricey but it has a three year warranty so my conscience is clear. We have four small trees on the balcony too, but all I need from them is the glow so I'm good there. Christmas is the happiest time of the year for me. As early as I can remember, I've been enchanted by the decor and it only gets stronger with each passing year. I hope it's the same for you!

The event at Theater on the Lake on Saturday, June 29 attracted an overflow crowd for an exciting fashion show presented by the All Stars of Project Runway designers Joshua Christensen, Johnathan Kayne Gillaspie, Korto Momolu, Christopher Palu and, of course, Peach! Joe Matty, president JourneyCare Foundation, opened the show by encouraging all of the clinical team members in the audience to stand and be recognized. He said, "Right now, we have around 1500 clinicians and care members taking

boots, gowns slit-up-to-there and plunging necklines. The show closed with a standing ovation as Peach showed her first collection following a horrible accident that left her wondering if she would ever be able to design again. Well, this show proved she could and in spades! The audience roared as every single new design made its appearance on the runway. AA_20190627_RenOne_0003Pride parties were happening all over Chicago including the underground South Side pride festival that took place on June 27 at the Promontory in Hyde Park. Red Bull Music hosted AA_20190627_RenOne_0014Red Bull Presents: Renaissance One – an amazing pride event that featured exciting DJ sets and performances BbyMutha, TT the Artist, Kidd Kenn, Blu Bone, DJ Hijo Pródigo, Professor-Wrecks and DJ Rae Chardonnay. Renaissance One's mission was to elevate these progressive artists while paying tribute to Chicago’s LGBTQ+ pioneers before the city’s 2019 Pride celebrations on June 30th. In 1970, following the Stonewall riots, a gay liberation AA_20190627_RenOne_0009organization formed at the University of Chicago and AA_20190627_RenOne_0017 sponsored a dance at the South Side’s Coliseum Annex which would become the first-ever public lesbian and gay dance event (aside from Halloween drag balls that were already happening). Following the dance, these energized organizers led a campaign to make the Normandy on Rush Street Chicago’s first gay bar to secure a license and permit same-sex dancing. Flash forward to 2019 and, thanks to these early activists, Chicago’s

Angie Tarantino

Tracey Tarantino DiBuono with her late mom, Angie Tarantino.

A life well lived was the loving takeaway at the funeral of Tracey Tarantino DiBuono's dear mom, Angela "Angie" Tarantino on June 24. She passed away at age 92 and ran Tracey's ZZAZZ Productions office for over 25 years as well as being a force in the community. The service at The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii was a testimony to her popularity. It was filled to the brim with friends, family and loved ones. In lieu of flowers, donations in Angie's memory can be made to the Service Club of Chicago.

The late Lynda Silverman with her loving husband Howard.

More sad news with the passing of Lynda Silverman after her longtime battle with cancer. She was a dedicated member of the Service Club of Chicago and, during her 30 years with the nonprofit, she served in almost every officer's position. In recent years, she was the loving caretaker for her husband Howard who struggled with his own health challenges. She is survived by Howard and her daughter Mimi. She was a pillar in the Service Club and for all the other nonprofits she came in contact with.  RIP dear Lynda.

The late Phil Geier with his Julie.

We've lost a giant in the world of business and philanthropy with the passing of Phil Geier, loving husband of Julie Geier and brother-in-law to Chicago's own, Gayle Anthony, on June 19. I was so sorry to hear this sad news as Chuck and I got a chance to get to know him during our time together in Palm Beach. He and Julie were inseparable with him passing in her loving arms. They were a striking couple, handsome and beautiful with an encyclopedic knowledge of the world around them. Phil was the former chairman/CEO of The Interpublic Group of Companies and an avid art collector who served briefly on President George W. Bush's National Economic Council, in addition to a number of other affiliations and achievements. (Read his complete obit here). In Phil's memory, donations can be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Our Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas just keeps hitting 'em out of the ballpark! Lately, she partnered with Reverend Jesse Jackson and Operation Push to help Chicago seniors save their homes. Maria discovered that more than 7,600 suburban Cook County property owners are in line for property tax refunds! She is the hardest working public servant I know and we're so lucky to have her! Recently, Maria was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Operation Push. Congrats Maria! So deserving!

We attended the July 8 official opening night of Meredith Willson's "Music Man" at the Goodman Theatre and, even though I had visions of Robert Preston's iconic version in my head, this production (directed by Tony-Award winning director Mary Zimmerman) was a wonderfully nostalgic and delightful trip back to River City. The show has spectacular (and complicated) choreography, hum-able musical favorites and a superior cast. The opening night dinner honored Zimmerman's 25th anniversary as an Artistic Associate with the Goodman. The production headed for Broadway from here with Hugh Jackman playing the lead. See it before it leaves on August 18!

We're finally enjoying the summer we've been waiting for (and deserve!) here in Chicago and I hope everyone is having a chance to enjoy it. The July 4th celebrations made me so proud to live in the U.S.A. and the long weekend offered us a chance to enjoy good friends and fine weather along the lakefront. I love all the neighborhood celebrations too with friend Raleigh Chin noting that she could see fireworks popping up all around the city from her apartment. Why can't we just legalize them already and save everyone long trips to Indiana!? Just sayin'…..

Love, as always,

Candace

THE JOFFREY BALLET’S COUTURE & COCKTAILS: SIX YEARS LATER AND STILL GOING STRONG!

Blog 1 - Kelli Zink interviewing co-chairs I have a soft spot for The Joffrey Ballet’s “Couture & Cocktails”…I admit it. Six years ago when Helen Melchior and I planned this event, I could never have anticipated how successful it would become nor how it Blog 2 - Yolanda Tyler, Ashley Wheater, Melissa Babcock and Christine Ott would bring me a lifelong friend in Helen. I know this year’s co-chairs, Rebecca Besser and Kristina McGrath, also bonded over this event. It usually happens this way when two like-minded people unite Blog 3 - Mike and Kristina McGrath with Rebecca and Charlie Besser for a common purpose, especially one that is so much fun to plan and for such a wonderful organization. The Joffrey Ballet has come a long way too since its inception. Founded by visionary teacher Robert Joffrey in 1956 in NY, guided by celebrated choreographer Blog 4 - The Darling Dancers! Gerald Arpino from 1988 until 2007, The Joffrey Ballet continues to thrive under internationally renowned Artistic Director Ashley Wheater and Executive Director Christopher Clinton Conway. I have loved Blog 5 - Bears Charles Tillman and Anthony Adams with Victoria Jaiani and Temur Suluashvili watching it grow since I’ve been a Women’s Board member and, this year, the Women’s Board has a birthday, too: Our 10th anniversary is being planned as I type and I can’t wait to share those details with you when Blog 6 - Dr.Michael O’Meara and Margaret O’Connor they’ve been formed by Event Chair Maureen Smith. Every year, Couture & Cocktails has presented a top name designer and, in years past, they have included Maria Pinto (for the inaugural event at The Illuminating Co.), Temperley Blog 7 - Bear J’Marcus Webb, Kendall Cooper, Paul Iacono and Fabrice Calmels London and Escada (for the party at the Bentley Dealership where the street was closed and tented!), Pamella Roland (for the first fashion show ever to be presented in the Grand Lobby of the Palmer House), Carmen Marc Valvo Blog 8 - Courtney Sherer, Lucien LaGrange, Melinda Jakovich (another killer show at the W) and this year’s designer, David Meister. This year’s event was also a first, being the first institution to host a major event at The Hudson at 2222 South Michigan. The previous party held there was the Blog 9 - John Walcher, Rhonda Sanderson and Paul Iacono much publicized Ikram anniversary party! Another signature for Couture & Cocktails is always the food! For the original event, we had re
al White Castle sliders in boxes served on silver trays – the first, fun Blog 10 - Yolanda and Joffrey Board Prez Jason Tyler food idea! This year, The Entertaining Company carried on in fine form with sliders, yes, but beef tenderloin sliders, along with many other tasty and creative choices. The dancers were an inspiration and the reason the event Blog 11 - Shelley Farley, Jim Karas and Shauna Montgomery was created. We wanted to showcase them in a friendly, fun atmosphere…away from the stage where guests could get to know them as people. They are not only incredible dancers, as we all know, but the most Blog 12 - Designer David Meister, Britta Lazenga, April Daley and Alan Siegel amazing human beings with multiple talents. Why, dancer Amber Neumann even designed cocktail dresses for a number of her cohorts for this night and they were GORGEOUS! Many others are artists and Blog 13 - Perri Irmer and Mary Ann Young designers. And they are all charming! The live auction was something to behold this year. Great auction packages included a trip for four plus airfare to the British Virgin Island’s Bitter End Yacht Club with airfare courtesy of United Airlines Blog 14 - Alan Sax and Sheryl Dyer that sold for $14,500. For this package, Executive Director Christopher Conway even donned a sailor suit! He looked adorable! Another package was an “Instant Cellar: Wine & Champagne Collection” with over 50 bottles that sold for $6,500. A Blog 15 - Kelli Zink and Ryan Poli PGA Masters Tournament and the Double Eagle Club for four (courtesy of Charlie and Rebecca Besser) plus business class airfare on United Airlines sold for $13,500. Mike and Kristina McGrath donated their 108-foot yacht, the Kristina, for Blog 16 - Having some C & C fun! a group of eight for four days and three nights that sold for $21,000. And for the final package, for the first time in the ballet company’s history, a dance-on role was offered during the season opener of its upcoming world premiere of Blog 17 - Christopher Clinton Conway and Rhonda Brown Don Quixote (which begins on October 12th and runs through the 23rd). This sold for $5,000. The party continued in the Intersport VIP Lounge as hot DJ Ashok lured the guests onto the dance floor. Seen on the scene were Chicago Bears Blog 18 - David Meister and Elena Besser Charles Tillman, Anthony Adams, J’Marcus Webb and Robbie Gould as well as the sensational, international choreographer for Don Quixote, Yuri Possokhov. May it never end! Congrats to Kristina and Rebecca along with the supportive Joffrey staff and Women’s Board committee members. (C & C 2011 raised over $250K).  For tickets and more info for the Joffrey Ballet and Don Quixote, please visit www.Joffrey.org/DonQuixote or call 800.982.2787. Blog 1 I love the name of this event! The 8th Annual “Mutt Strut” invites Chicago to “strut” their stuff for charity on Saturday, October 8th, in Lakeview along Newport Avenue (between Southport and Lakewood) from noon until 2 PM. The party kicks off with a 1.5-mile walk “with your mutt” Blog 2 followed by an old-fashioned block party. This event is open to all ages and will include lunch, children’s activities, contests, raffles, music and a chance to visit with adoptable Chicago Canine Rescue Foundation doggies. Tickets are $25 but kids and dogs get in free! Proceeds will benefit CCR, which was founded in 2001 to help find loving homes for dogs and cats, especially for the most Blog 3 vulnerable in Chicago who are slated for euthanasia because they are too old, too young, too injured, have disabilities or have simply been overlooked for too long by potential adopters and other shelters. CCR is moving to a larger space and the proceeds from this event will help a lot! I hope to see you all there with your four-legged and two-legged friends!
