took place on January 25. Thanks to the throng of A-listers and foodies, the restaurant hummed with excitement for this handsome spot that will soon be on everybody’s Hot List. The River North restaurant at 504 N. Wells was formerly the Hudson, SushiSamba and lastly Bottled Blond. It is awash is calming shades of neutral browns and reds with scattered greenery and large, spacious booths. On this opening night, guests were greeted with champagne, an open bar and a lite buffet. On the first floor, the spacious dining room features row upon row of arching lights, which was reminiscent of lighting in

this is definitely apparent in this 12,000-square-foot-space with an additional 2,000-sq-ft of event space. The Boka Boys have tapped Chicago native Chef Daniel Rose to help with this big endeavor. Rose rose to prominence with award-winning restaurants in Paris and New York. (This dynamic trio will soon be opening another eatery inside L.A.’s Hoxton Hotel, according to Eater). The Le Select menu is extensive with specialties of

Well, that was exactly the party that beloved Chef Art Smith and his husband/artist Jesus Salgueiro threw on January 26. A cold, snowy night didn’t keep the lines of cars from pulling up to the valet in Kenwood to make their arrivals. From the front door, all throughout the house, there were fantastic colorful decorations for this very special New Year soiree. The room was decorated in grand, understated elegance with the florals, crystal, vases, chairs, bars and even the silver reflecting carpet leading to the ceremony, all matching the existing decor–brilliant! There were IMG_6181absolutely no mistakes, no missteps, nothing that didn't fit perfectly in that fantastical dreamscape. All of the wedding party was dressed in black and white, carrying long bouquets of white freesia. Even the couple's dachshunds wore outfits that matched the IMG_6204wedding party– black organza with brilliant, sparkling brooches on top. At the podium, the wedding party gathered round Derrick and Scott as they exchanged their vows. Derrick said, "You acknowledge my strengths and accept all of my faults, allowing me to be broken in your arms — the safest place I've ever been. You make me want to be a better person every single day. You were so worth

also adhered to an old tradition, especially popular in farming communities, of donning crowns which symbolize power and dignity. Derrick and Scott were surrounded with love from both sets of parents as well as Scott's daughter Madison Ellsworth. Following the ceremony, guest enjoyed champagne, cocktails and delicious hors d'oeuvres. A darling "Ring the Bell" station supplied guests with the signature cocktail of the night through a closed curtain when they rang a bell. It went off throughout the reception, as you can imagine! LOL! For the seated dinner, guests enjoyed the music of the always fabulous Tina Jenkins (TJ) Crawley, a string quartet and more. It was truly one of the most beautiful and touching ceremonies we've had the honor of witnessing. Long may you love Derrick and Scott!

Based on the novel by Leo Tolstoy, Possokhov’s immersive adaptation—winner of the 2019 “Oscars of Dance” Benois de la Danse International Prize for Best Choreography—features an original composition by award-winning composer Ilya Demutsky, costumes and sets by Emmy Award-winning designer Tom Pye, and lighting by famed designer David Finn. In a one-of-a-kind Executives’ Club of Chicago Signature Series discussion on November 14, fashion mogul Furstenberg shared highlights from her decades long career in fashion and philanthropy during a sold-out luncheon at the Radisson Blu Aqua. Clad in a chic knit leopard print sweater and skirt with black boots, the fashion icon was joined by moderator, Kristina O’Neill, WSJ Magazine, editor and veteran of the New York magazine industry, who conducted the hour long interview. Diane shared her most recent philanthropic work as chair of the fund-raising for the much anticipated Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island in New York City. They discussed the importance of utilizing one’s voice, knowledge and connections to uplift

liberties and freedoms in this country and in particular for women empowerment. Margaret Mueller, ECC president/CEO and Tracie Morris, US Chief HR and Inclusion Officer BMO Financial Group, welcomed the crowd along with new ECC Chief

Content and Communications Officer, Eva Penar. Diane has dedicated her life to empowering women all over the world through her philanthropic efforts. She was born of Belgian Jewish parents. Her mother survived Auschwitz, being liberated weighing only 49 pounds. 18 months later, Diane was born. She told the crowd, after her mother suffered in the camp, she never allowed Diane to show fear even going so far as locking her in the closet when she was afraid of the dark. In 1974, Furstenberg introduced the wrap dress that would make her world famous at 23 years of age. By the time she was 28, she had 18 licensing agreements. She shared many words of wisdom with the rapt crowd including the following: 1) "I promise you, the most important relationship you have is with yourself. Once you have that, every other relationship is a plus and not a must." 2) The only thing you have 100% control over is your character. You can lose your health but you never lose your character." 3) "The secret to life is owning it. If you own your

imperfections, they become an asset and if you own your vulnerability, it becomes your strength." 4) "At least twice a week I wake up feeling like a loser. The only people who don't feel this way are the losers." 5) "Make sure you engage with

someone once a week that no one pays attention to. It will expand your universe and theirs."  6) "Serving as a mentor is a nice way to stay relevant as you grow older and it works because you're not a threat to them then."  7) "It's very important that we fight violence, abuse and inequality." 8) "I did an interview and was asked what I wanted to be now, I told them I wanted to be an oracle." She ended her fascinating discussion with this. "If I'm lucky, I'm in the autumn of my life and it's great because in the autumn, the foliage is the most beautiful. It's a wonderful time. I have a lot to give and share." She received thunderous applause and a standing ovation. What a great afternoon! Happy BD Leslie!

It was a complete takeover of the elegant Marchesa restaurant at 535 N. Wells on Thursday, November 21 when auction maven Leslie Hindman threw a spectacular

Everybody who was anybody was there including the Governor and his MK, Linda Johnson Rice, Neal Zucker and Marko Iglendza, Robin and Mark Tebbe, Ken Norgan, Michael Kutza, Mary Lou Gorno, Trish Rooney, Les Coney, Suzette and Alan Bulley, Michael Sneed, Judy Erwin, Don and Maron Hindman,

to the main floor where tables were topped in crystal and silver with gorgeous white flowers. Place cards directed guests to their seats–not happy about being separated from Chuck but was grateful to be included. Israel "Izzy" Idonije introduces FBRK Impact House.

Israel "Izzy" Idonije, entrepreneur, humanitarian, former NFL player and all-around nice guy, broke ground on the FBRK Impact House at 200 W. Madison Street on November 13. Set to open in March 2020, the 45,000 square-foot space will be the city’s first innovation-focused philanthropy center dedicated to serving and supporting grant makers, family foundations and impact investors. Local foundations, media and notable Chicagoans attended the groundbreaking event, which revealed design plans, reinforced the need for the IMG_0841facility and further discussed the vision for the new space. The event featured remarks from Idonije, as well as Candace Moore, Chief Equity Officer for the City of Chicago, and Angelique Power, President, Field

FBRK Impact House, founded by Izzy and friends, is the result of a shared vision between FBRK, Field Foundation, Woods Fund, United States Artists and Forefront, with the core desire to unify Chicago’s Impact Community, break down silos, encourage collaboration and provide greater access to opportunities. a membership-based work club with a thoughtfully designed ecosystem to provide a balance of private offices, work space, meeting and conference rooms where impact organizations can work together, collaborate and operate with greater efficiency. “Chicago is filled with wonderful people who are committed to making our city better,” said Idonije. “FBRK Impact House will offer an inviting, transparent environment to foster relationships among organizations — a framework in which the philanthropic community will thrive.” According to the most recent Giving in Illinois report, there

Together, these organizations have reached a giving record of $4.6 billion in 2016 – collectively nearly tripling the amount of giving since 2006. Despite this, challenges for grant-making institutions often include working in isolation, having laborious application and review practices and being intimidating to approach. FBRK Impact House will provide a creative and safe space for these organizations to meet, conceive ideas and collaborate. The FBRK Impact House will be the first space of its kind in the country. “Our

"Tunneling" with the one and only, Mamie Walton.

Had a fabulous lunch with the one and only Mamie Walton at RL recently. She rivals my favorite model, Carmen dell'Orefice, in looks and glamour with personality plus. She needs her own reality show. I asked her for some beauty tips and she told me she exercises religiously, at the barre of course! It's no wonder she's so limber. And I raced to Saks following

lunch to buy the same makeup she uses since her skin is so flawless (DIOR Airflash, you're welcome). She is so involved and curious, it's no wonder she looks like she's 50 at age 91. And no, this isn't a typo. She is much loved and endlessly fascinating. On the day we lunched, it was bitter cold outside but she was wrapped in a light (chic) coat. I asked her if she didn't get cold coming from the Peninsula and she told me no since she used the tunnels. WHAT?! My head snapped around since I'd never knew anything like this existed. Well, she was kind enough to walk me through them (not open to the public, just for deliveries and Mamie!) and it was so cool! You can literally walk completely underground from the Pen to RL. Who knew? Now we all do! Lol!

Robert Garvey and Dana Hokin Garvey at Robert's Pizza.

Robert's Pizza and Dough Co. isn't exactly new, it opened on May 17, but it was new to us until recently. When we found this charming spot on the river at 465 N. McClurg Ct., we were happy IMG_1215 to see its affable co-owner and pizza maverick Robert Garvey hanging out at the bar with customers. He and his charming wife, Dana Hokin Garvey, have been perfecting their/his delicious pizza recipes for a Untitledlong, long time–beginning first with a restaurant at the family owned Bitter End Yacht Club, that was lost during the last hurricane but is in the rebuilding process. Robert told me he has tried literally over 1000s of recipes before landing on his top 13 that includes ingredients IMG_1161like carmelized onions, house-made pepperoni and sausage, Brussels sprouts and bacon, seafood, fennel, duck, the classic and more. The house-made meatballs will give you nighttime cravings. When the pizza restaurant was located at the Bitter End Yacht Club, even Virgin Group's Richard Branson couldn't resist serving Robert's pizzas at his daughter's rehearsal dinner! We highly recommend this spot, that in the spring/summer, will also have an outdoor patio and space for docking boats. (Dine in, carry out or delivery, www.robertspizza.com , 312.265.1328, they take reservations too!)

Our Balsam Hill Silverado Slim Flip Tree. (Also changes to color and a combo with a dimmer.)

I know some would say it's too soon, but our Christmas decor has been up for quite a while now and we're loving every minute of it. I posted a video of Chuck setting up our new Balsam Hill Silverado Slim Flip Tree (watch video here) and I'm telling you, it's

IMG_1569

changed our lives. We have struggled with fake (and real) trees, falling apart in too many pieces, failing light strands and so much more for so long, that I was more than ready for change. When we dragged our old one out of storage and it, yet again, failed to light, I almost threw it over the balcony. Coincidentally, this was the same day the Balsam Hill catalog arrived (it was almost

IMG_1565

like they knew). I flipped through it and thought the trees looked nice but it wasn't until I came across the flip tree that I became laser focused. I watched their installation video online and was immediately hooked. When it arrived, all it needed was a little branch fluffing to IMG_0984 make it look like the Christmas miracle that it is. Every single ornament fit and the branches sweep almost to the floor. I couldn't love it more. Not gonna lie, it was a little pricey but it has a three year warranty so my conscience is clear. We have four small trees on the balcony too, but all I need from them is the glow so I'm good there. Christmas is the happiest time of the year for me. As early as I can remember, I've been enchanted by the decor and it only gets stronger with each passing year. I hope it's the same for you!

IMG_6254There are parties and then there are DRIEHAUS parties of which there is a world of difference. As a matter of fact, Richard Driehaus just may well be the Hugh Hefner of our age sans Bunnies! One of the most coveted invitations around is Richard's Summer Party, which also celebrates his birthday each year. This year's "O77" theme

was a nod to both James Bond and Richard's 77th birthday. It was the largest in the event's long history with over 1,100 of his closest friends in attendance. We love any excuse to travel to Lake Geneva in the summer and this is a really good one. Our long weekend started off at a friend's beautiful

lake house where we met up with several friends including Linda Yu (host with her Stuart), Sylvia Perez, Frances Renk, Andrea and Dr. Steve Stryker, Peach Carr, Nora Dunn, Alison Ruble, among others. The "mother" of all parties began with a unique invitation that included details printed on silvered metal with an image of Richard posing as James Bond between Sean Connery, Roger Moore, Pierce Brosnan and others, enclosed with a black leather kit (marked "Top Secret-For Your Eyes

Only") containing a complete portable martini set for two! The invitation box also included a very real-looking passport with Richard's photo and info as a "Special Agent."This sort of attention to detail is a hallmark of every Driehaus party and it's a thrill to behold. We drove up to the "estate on the lake" where valet parkers took guests'

cars before boarding trolleys and buses to the party site. Among the many lakes and ponds dotting the property, the one bordering the cocktail and dining areas were filled with ginormous "casino chips" floating lazily atop the water. Aerialists and models dressed as "golden girls" greeted guests as they meandered through the orchard and "Children's

elegant.  Food stations were scattered throughout the space and featured "Skyfall" (Mediterranean fare), "License to Kill" (carving station with baby lamb chops, salmon, pasta), "The Spy Who Loved Me" (veggies), "Casino Royale" (paella and salads), "Goldfinger" (desserts including caramelized bananas and mini apple pie skillets) and a "Pretty Cool" ice cream bar. Every year, Richard thrills guests with

top. Richard made his entrance in his usual dramatic fashion via a video that showed clips from past James Bond films with his image superimposed in several key scenes (see video here). During his opening remarks, he sat in an oversized red leather chair and began in story-telling fashion of how his father influenced his life. "One of the greatest gifts of time and aging is the perspective it gives on life. Danish philosopher Kierkegaard said this, 'Life can only be understood backwards but it must be

lived forwards.' With that in mind, tonight I want to acknowledge my father Herman and his influence on my life…Dad wanted the best for us and he gave me a priceless gift, the power of aspiration, " he said.

Richard's father was a successful mechanical engineer with 24 patents but he only received $1 per patent and wasn't able to afford a house that he desired. This inspired Richard to make sure he was in a better position to provide for his own family when the time came. With his voice breaking, he concluded, "I thank you dad, you inspired me with your aspiration. It was a life-changing gift. Thank you dad

for what you did." Diana Ross entered in grand fashion too (see video here) and opened her hour long set with "My World is Empty Without You Babe" and sang many

of her hits including "Stop! In the Name of Love", "Baby Love", "Why Do Fools Fall in Love" and many more. During "Reach Out and Touch", she asked the crowd to hold up their cell phones in flashlight mode. She made three gorgeous costume changes, one more exquisite than the next, wished Richard a happy birthday and then, poof, she was gone leaving everyone in a dreamlike state. Afterwards, Richard's family presented him with a huge birthday cake and then it was time for fireworks! On the lawn, more cocktails and desserts were served…..It was a party for the record books, as they all are. I'm sure Hefner was watching with envy.

Streisand by Kathy

Streisand at the United Center (photo by Kathy Piccone).

By now, the whole world knows that Chicago designer Azeeza Khan has designed a wardrobe for Barbra Streisand's summer tour! Azeeza is no stranger to celeb dressing having had stars like Beyonce and Sarah Jessica Parker already wearing her designs but she seemed particularly excited about this big collaboration and no wonder! In a Tribune article by David Syrek,

Khan said she became acquainted with Streisand through a hook-up by a store manager at Barney's where Azeeza's line is exclusive. Babs had seen her designs there and, voila, here we are! Their meetings at Streisand’s California home resulted in the singer wearing a show-stopping black ruffled silk gown (now dubbed “The Barbara,” that will retail for $2995) designed by Khan as Streisand performed her classic song “The Way We Were” in London early last month. During her United Center gig, Babs acknowledged "Chicago designer Azeeza" from the stage. How cool is that?! Since those meetings, Khan has created about 30 pieces for the star for on and off the stage. You go girl!

This year, Taste of Chicago had the highest attendance rate since 2012 when the food fest moved to a five-day format! Over 1.6 million people enjoyed more than 200 menu items from 66 food restaurants and food trucks in Grant Park! By the numbers–Gold Coast Dogs sold over 90,000

hotdogs and 10,000 Maxwell Street Polish sausages! O'Brien's Restaurant and Bar sold 28,000 ears of corn; Lou Malnati's sold 20,000 slices of pizza; Miller's Pub sold 15,000 turkey legs; Pork & Mindy's sold 10,000 pieces of pig candy (bacon); Billy Goat Tavern & Grill sold 13,000

cheeseborgers and BJ's Market & Bakery sold 6000 lbs. of mustard-fried catfish (heavenly) and 9500 servings of peach cobbler (my will power held on this one). You get the picture, the event was wildly successful for both vendors and attendees with Saturday alone seeing the strongest sales since 2009 with over $1.9 million being spent! Of all the entertainment, food and fun though, our favorite was the fabulous birthday

celebration hosted by Eli's Cheesecake Company on Saturday. The event has become an annual tradition for both Eli's and Taste of Chicago, which both launched in 1980. (Eli's is the only vendor that can boast perfect attendance throughout the 37 years!) On this beautiful summer day, Maureen and Marc Schulman and their family pulled out all stops! A live performance by Cirque du Soleil (inspired by the upcoming

The 1500-lb cheesecake (this year chocolate chip and cream cheese) took a week to prepare and included more than 700 lbs. of cream cheese, 200 lbs. of sugar and 60 lbs. of chocolate chips, to name just a few of the delicious ingredients! (Eli's has sold over 5

million slices of cheesecake at Taste over the past 36 years!) And to top it all off, Julianna Zobrist, the beautiful wife of Cubs second baseman and outfielder Ben Zobrist, led the crowd in a round of Happy Birthday! ALL the food at Taste was tempting but Eli's had us at "cheesecake." It's a parent's worst nightmare–imagine you give birth to a happy, healthy baby only to find out a year or two later that he/she is diagnosed with a rare disease for which there's no cure (yet!) Well, this is exactly what happened to Hollywood producer Gordon Gray and his wife Kristen when they

Beauty over 50 imageAnd now, it's time for a little rant, if you will allow me. Lately, I've been googling "beauty tips for women over 50" just to see if I've been missing anything. Amusingly and #5frustratingly, what I've come to realize is that a LOT of these articles seem to be written by "bloggers" who haven't even REACHED the age of 50! What the hell!? Today I read a column filled with all sorts of ridiculous "beauty tips" and the top of my head almost blew off. One

Model Carmen dell' Orifice, the epitome of ageless beauty at 86!

of the lists boldly stated "Do not wear eyeshadow if you're over 50"; "Don't wear bright colored lipstick"; "Don't wear your hair below your shoulders" and so much more! Omg, it was laughable. These women don't even know how to deal with skin on women my age. My face cries out for cosmetics, eye shadow and any other external help I can provide it with. And, at this point in your life, let me

Actress Helen Mirren, timeless beauty at age 71

remind you that this is your time to shine! You know yourself inside and out so make a bold statement! Wear your hair shockingly short or any damn way you please. If you want to draw a lipline like Betty Boop, I say just do it! The rules are that there ARE NO RULES! My favorite octogenarian style icon, Iris Apfel, wisely said, "When you don't dress like everyone else, you don't have to think like everyone else." And even though there are NO rules, here's a few I follow for my own style. I

feel much better now. Thank you.

And speaking of style, if you're a fan of octogenarian style icon Iris Apfel like I am, then you will love this story about the Queen of South Beach, the late Irene Williams. There was a celebration of her life recently in SoBe. Congrats to award-winning filmmaker Eric Smith on this great doc (it's not long and soooo interesting!) Watch here!

Celebrating a decade of providing essential support for Chicago area community college students, One Million Degrees (OMD) raised a record $775,000 at its 10th Annual Food & Wine Tasting on June 2nd. Co-chaired by Deb Gross, Caroline Grossinger, and Rose Lizarraga, the benefit attracted nearly 600 people, who set the stage for helping 1,000 high-potential community college scholars across Chicago by 2018 succeed in school, work, and life. And even though the restaurant offers a classic steakhouse menu, there are so many other dishes by Chefs Marc Lupino and Brian Key to tempt you like Shetland Island salmon, prime steakhouse meatloaf, Chef's PB&J (paté, fig jam and Woodford Reserve bourbon), Alaskan king crab and rock shrimp mac & cheese and on and on and on! I highly recommend this elegant, yet cozy dining spot and was happy to see so many familiar faces who work there now, like Charlie Gitto! I also love their philanthropic efforts on behalf of the Chicago community. Food, fundraising, elegance and ambiance–all watchwords for this cool new player in the city's restaurant scene.

Over a thousand of Chicago’s philanthropists and social leaders (and all-around cuties) gathered at Shedd Aquarium for one of the city’s premier summer fundraising fêtes, BLU, on August 5. As many of you know, I attend a LOT of fabulous events throughout the year,

LOLLA was conceived and created in 1991 by Jane's Addiction singer Farrell as a Perry 176800farewell tour for his band. The event ran annually until 1997 and was revived in 2003. From its inception through 1997 and its revival in 2003, the festival toured North America. In

She is bringing her own special brand of luxury to Chicago with Veluxe, an on-demand beauty and fitness app that is available NOW!
