The Chicago Lighthouse's greatly anticipated FLAIR fashion show on October 16 was a virtual delight. It literally took a village, albeit a very socially distanced one, to bring this important mission and vision to life. Designers and retailers showcased their looks in pre-taped segments that went

off without a hitch! This is all thanks to the talent and skills of my event co-host and show producer, Tracey DiBuono and her ZZAZZ Productions team, along with Kevin Sullivan and Francisco Perez. Huge kudos to Sheree Valukas and Sherrill Bodine who have expertly co-chaired this show for the past 4 years! The event's fashion segments were filmed at Tufano's Vernon Park Tap (1073 W. Vernon Park) with an edgy, cool urban backdrop (and filmed all in ONE day)! Male models

strutted down the middle of Vernon Park Place as a drone caught their moves from above. Models Sheree Valukas, Elyse Leavy, The Lighthouse's Lindsay Inglis and Elizabeth Mairs even climbed onto the roof (wearing designs by RedE) for dramatic shots from that angle. The creativity was truly off the charts. The scenes were all

the hallways of this haven of hope and it was so powerful to see. Dr. Janet Szlyk (Chicago Lighthouse president/CEO) spoke about the organization and how, over the past year, The Lighthouse "has come together to succeed during this tough time and shine like the beacon that we are." She talked about the org's employment services and job training programs and spotlighted staff members Kalari Girtley Jackson, Carly Englander and Jessica Smith, who are thriving in various positions within the organization. Kalari debuted the OrCam MyEye Pro, an amazing piece of technology that empowers people who are blind, enabling them to discern

Dr. Janet introduced Gaelynn Lea, a dynamic advocate for the disabled community who was born with a genetic condition that causes complications in the development of bones and limbs. She sang an original song (she also plays the violin) and is a past winner of the NPR Tiny Desk Contest. Event coordinator/friend Kevin Sullivan zoomed in from Marchesa where a fabulous Watch Party was being attended by about 34 guests. Dr. Sandy Goldberg and her supportive husband Greg Hines during the virtual event.

Even though it had to be virtual, Dr. Sandy Goldberg and her talented team figured out a way to make this year's (16th!) A Sterling Event benefiting A Silver Lining Foundation something very, very memorable just like she's always done in the past at her live events. Auctioneer Jim Miller opened the 90 minute show by introducing longtime supporter and WGN anchor Micah Materre who was shown in her kitchen busily creating the event's signature cocktail, a

(Just love him and the love they have together). I was honored to share a video tribute for this amazing nonprofit along with ABC-7's Tracy Butler, NBC Chicago's LeeAnn Trotter and Cancer Wellness magazine founder Caylei Vogelzang, among others. Tracy was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2018 and heard Dr. Sandy on the radio providing much needed inspiration and hope. LeeAnn lost her mom to breast cancer at an early age. Later

has evolved from a single outreach program connecting those in need of breast health resources to a funder of potentially life- saving breast health testing. In 2019, ASLF funded almost 2000 tests for 1487 women, resulting in 18 life-saving diagnoses. The organization has 15 partner hospitals in the Chicagoland area. All event proceeds will support the programs of the foundation, in particular, Buy A Mom A Mammogram, which funds cost-free breast health testing for uninsured, underinsured, undocumented women and men and for those who have lost their jobs and health insurance due to the pandemic. The Luminarts Cultural Foundation hosted a successful virtual event on October 10. "Next Begins Now," was a fundraiser to support our city's outstanding emerging artists so that they can pursue careers in the arts. Throughout the evening, we heard outstanding performances in a variety of genres. Katya Schloeman, a Luminarts Fellow in Dance 2017, performed a stirring ballet. She is a former company member of The Joffrey Academy of Dance. I was proud to introduce Josh Brown (via video of course), a 2019 Fellow in Classical Music, who performed on a 1679 Pietro Guarneri violin! According to stats, the greatest roadblock to first-gen success isn't a lack of talent or desire, but the lack of financial resources. Dollars raised from this event will be used to help remove that barrier. The evening celebrated student scholars who are the beneficiaries of 1stGEN Scholarships as

award-winning director/writer/producer Robert Zemeckis for HBO, premiered on Oct. 22. Robert's adoring wife Leslie threw a socially distanced DIY cast party to celebrate with cake and champagne and, of course stylish masks. The story, which stars Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer and Stanley Tucci, takes place in late 1967. A young orphaned boy goes to live with his loving grandma (Spencer) in the rural Alabama town of Demopolis. As the boy and his  grandmother encounter some deceptively glamorous but thoroughly diabolical witches, she wisely whisks him away to a seaside resort. Regrettably, they arrive at precisely the same time that the world's Grand High Witch has gathered her fellow cronies from around the globe — under cover — to carry out her nefarious plans. So please bear with me, you just might find a new org you hadn't heard of before and then be able to support it when the new event date is set. During this awful time, if you have the means, please consider supporting whichever nonprofits touch your heart. They, along with all of our wonderful arts organizations and cultural institutions, need our help now more than ever. Also, for our restaurant community, please consider carry-out, curb service or delivery, if offered. Hopefully soon, the news cycle will look a little different but, until then, I hope everyone stays safe and follows the guidelines (that seem to change hourly) Fingers crossed and prayers up……

They were set to host an event on March 25 at the BOSS Store at the Shops at North Bridge but, as we all know, all social gatherings have been halted. The event was intended to raise funds to build a youth center for children coping with grief after losing a loved one. Sadly, both ladies have experience with this type of grief. Brittney, as you know, lost her father Walter Payton when she was very young and Michelle's 3 children recently lost their dad. Michelle said, "There are not enough services dealing with grief other than the therapist that the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute has on board. We want to change that, " she said. (The center will be a part of the Institute). Please watch for a new date and I hope you can all join us then!

Tribune nonprofit article 3-14-20Thanks to the Chicago Tribune for running my article titled "A letter of support to my friends in the nonprofit community." Read it here and here: I feel your pain. I've watched with dismay as one after another of the events I planned on covering in my Chicago Tribune "Candid Candace" column was cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak. At first I was angry that they would succumb to this panic but, as more and more organizations, governments, countries and even Broadway cancel events, close their borders, restrict air travel, limit gatherings and close down the Great White Way, I have to admit the obvious….that my way of thinking, to soldier on, could be tempting fate. I applaud businesses who have the courage to keep their doors open in the face of all of this though. Many have sent sensible messages letting their clients know they are taking extra sanitary precautions and checking their workers more closely and encouraging both to stay home if feeling sick in accordance with recent guidelines. In my opinion, this is a common sense response. I believe it's a time for preparation, not panic. Here's a thought. Many of these nonprofits and arts organizations have had to cancel their biggest fundraisers for the year. If you've already purchased a ticket to one of these events, and CAN afford it, please let the donation ride. Right now, they need it more than you know…

I woke up to such sad news today. My beloved Playboy magazine may well have published its last print issue due to complications from Covid-19. When I shot my cover pictorial in the last Equality issue on October 22, everyone at the mag seemed so upbeat and positive about

the future of Playboy and then, in the blink of an eye–everything changed (for everyone). Here's an excerpt from an open letter on March 18 from the magazine's editor-in-chief, Ben Kohn "Last week, as the disruption of the coronavirus pandemic to content production and the

supply chain became clearer and clearer, we were forced to accelerate a conversation we’ve been having internally: the question of how to transform our U.S. print product to better suit what consumers want today, and how to utilize our industry-leading content production capabilities to engage in a cultural conversation each and every day, rather than just every three months.

2nd to the last of the PB print editions, The Equality Issue.

With all of this in mind, we have decided that our Spring 2020 Issue, which arrives on U.S. newsstands and as a digital download this week, will be our final printed publication for the year in the U.S. We will move to a digital-first publishing schedule for all of our content."

Playboy has been my family for the last 40 years and I have no plans to let them go now. Even if it's only on a digital platform, my Bunny ears will still be attuned to its always timely, diverse and informative articles and photos. Keep it up Playboy and I'll catch you on the digital ride soon! Your Biggest Fan–"Candid" Candace Jordan

These are crazy, surreal times right now, along with you, and I'm not quite sure how to process it yet. dinner recently (please don't judge, local businesses need help too and this was before the ALL OUT CLOSING of bars and restaurants! Gallucci Pizzeria Napoletana was great, btw, at 1551 N. Wells. Please try it when it reopens!) Some people still think some of this might be rather excessive but, I for one, know it's better to be safe than sorry. I just wish I'd stocked up on necessities sooner. Chuck always said I was a hoarder but definitely not in the areas of food or drink, sadly. Luckily, as much as I love my social life, I've also always been a bit of a homebody. I want this thing to end and I hope there's not more loss of life. I feel like I'm in a bad horror movie, like "Outbreak," that's now coming true! I love the way the Italians are handling isolation, singing on their balconies to let their neighbors know they're in it together. Here's praying it doesn't come to that here though….I have a horrible voice.

Love, as always,

after we did a little research, we decided to experience it for ourselves on a recent trip to NYC. The program helps charities raise money using live auction packages of memorable vacation experiences. They include beach, city, mountain and international accommodations–everything from an estate on Lake Como to a private island in Belize and so much more! There's a reasonable reserve for the packages but

there's no obligation if it doesn't sell. (You can see how it works here.) We chose the NYC package and it was everything they had promised and more–friendly greeters, exquisite accommodations in a beautiful apartment and a follow-up to make sure you were satisfied. I love this concept and am very familiar with how hard it is to find/offer unique live auction prizes for

Adam Capes, Getaway2Give president/chief idea officer, founded the company in 2012 and "hopes to continue to help more charities and schools increase their fundraising capabilities." On our first night, we saw King Kong at the Broadway Theatre. I have no words to describe how fabulous and awe-inspiring it was. The mechanical gorilla has to be the 8th wonder of the world! The music was good but it was truly all about the ape. My mouth stayed open for the entire 2 hours and 15 minutes. (A must-see if you can). Afterwards, we had dinner at Raoul's, a

(And, of course, we had to take a sneaky photo for posterity! Lol!). The next day, we couldn't wait to see the CAMP exhibit at the Met. It did not disappoint. There are more than 250 objects dating from the 17th century to the present. The exhibit is inspired

Close to 400 guests attended the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) Midwest Region’s 2019 Spirit of Courage Benefit dinner at the Ritz-Carlton in Chicago recently. The Center bestowed its highest honor, the Humanitarian Laureate Award, on Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (2017 – 2019), for her courage and compassion in protecting global human rights and the state of Israel. Ms. Haley and Mary Hart, SWC Trustee and TV personality, had an inspiring conversation on Haley’s upbringing in an Indian immigrant family and the struggle of being an “other” in American society. Haley shared how this experience made her stronger and to take true pride in being an American. Ms. Haley also discussed the current negative political atmosphere and articulated that while it’s bad, we should

With Sargent McCormick (2nd from R) with friends at Pump Room

I received a very unusual invite for the 108th Twelfth Night Masquerade. What the hell is this, you ask? I know, I asked myself the same question so I googled it: It turns out this is a very exclusive party (by invite only and, by this I mean only you and not your spouse or a plus-one which irritated me to no end). However, my natural curiosity got the best of me so I just had to go. From what I discovered, this event was founded in 1905 by Bill Gamble (of Procter & Gamble fame) and his high-society cohorts, who banded together to break up the doldrums of winter in Chicago by inaugurating the Widow & Widowers Ball. From the start, it was a party with an irreverent twist: Gamble and company drew up a list of all the couples in their social circles, decided which member of each couple they deemed the most fun and invited that person alone to attend the ball. By 1920, this rule was relaxed – no doubt because of the outrage from the other partner – and the name was changed to The Twelfth Night Masquerade. Billy Gamble died in 1921 but the party continues as his lasting legacy to Chicago social life. Twelfth Night 2 - Clemente Dadoo from the University of Chicago and Thomas Love from Northwesternhas been a fixture on the Chicago social calendar for more than a century and for many remains a family tradition with current guests, their parents and even their grandparents in attendance. In order to receive an invite, you must be known to the Committee of Twelve. Oh, and the evening was also a celebration of charming Sargent McCormick’s 30th birthday. 🙂 I could only attend the pre-party cocktail get-together at the Pump Room but the party hit its zenith later with 600 guests in costume in the Gold Coast Room of the Drake Hotel. No press allowed…oops, there goes next year’s invite! 😉 Their motto: Let good taste prevail to no avail. Their rule: No equestrians or mounted pedestrians.

This is only the third time this award has been given. Past recipients were the directors of the Sundance and Telluride Film Festivals! Thanks for all you do Michael! We are all lucky to know you!

I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving…I know I did: We shared a lovely meal at my sister and brother-in-law’s, Nancy and Dr. Os Steinwald, with a fun group of 16. It’s so exciting to see how much the little ones have grown from one holiday to the next.
