THE WHO, WHAT, WHERE AND WOW: PARTY PEOPLE IN THE WINDY CITY

The Christkind at the market at Gallagher Way in Wrigleyville.

The Christkindlmarket is back and heralding the holidays like none other. The preview party, "Twas' the Night Before Christkindlmarket," was November 17. This

was a great chance to really see the amazing gifts on offer up close and actually chat with the vendors. I spoke to Frank of Frank's Ornament House, he's been coming to the market for 25 years and absolutely loves it. He said, "I love seeing people come here from around the world and am proud to display my over 2,500 ornaments from my country [Germany]!" Another vendor's daughter had designed several of the ornaments on display which I thought was so charming. Everyone has a story and I wish I could've chatted with every one of them. Inside a special warming tent, guests could snap

photos with Santa and Mrs. Claus, enjoy the popular gluhwein (spiced, mulled wine) and an opening ceremony that introduced the Christkind, the face of the market, who welcomed visitors. A buffet dinner was offered in the heated Grand IMG_3440Timber Haus where many of the food items for sale in the market could be sampled. (The potato pancakes were out of this world.). Carolers and the Phenix Trio provided a festive soundtrack to the market. The following day, the market in Wrigleyville/ Gallagher Way opened and, for the first time, a skating rink was placed inside Wrigley Field! It was so cool to see the stadium used in this way. In the Christkindlmarket, also for the first time, a charming

carousel took center stage surrounded by 35+ vendors. And, again for the first time, a brand new market was launched in Aurora at RiverEdge Park. There's is something for everyone at each market and it is such a great way to celebrate the season. The Daley Plaza and Aurora markets will be in place through December 24 and the Gallagher Way market through December 31. (christkindlmarket.com)

Kathy Piccone was honored as the Woman of Vision and Dr. Ali Djalilian was the Gift of Sight honoree. Both attracted supporters who were anxious Event co-chair Michael Caputo R (with Candid Candace) and guests James and Kay Macknyk.to give back to these two Chicagoans who have given so much to so many. Kathy was introduced by last year's honoree Justine Fedak, who gave a beautiful intro (all without notes!) and Dr. Ali, wearing a top hat, was presented by Dr. Parag Majmudar, last year's Gift of Sight honoree. There were so many exciting moving parts to the event that you didn't know where to look first. Upon entry, two "circus performers" (from ZZAZZ

Mary Ann Rose and her team tented the ballroom in large swaths of black and white fabric which matched the dramatic silk black and white tablecloths. A perfect final touch, donated by Mary Ann, were bright pink feathered fans at each place setting, which added the perfect pop of color. The overall effect was exactly

All the speakers' comments were well thought out and added so much emotion to the evening. Congrats with love to realtor Frank N. Jeffery on the occasion of his 50th birthday. His longtime love Todd Hatoff threw him a fabulous bash at Sepia. Before this, he was feted at parties all over town and around the world (think San Jose del Cabo, at the Viceroy). More celebrations are in order, this time for longtime loves Kip Helverson and Trey Gonzales. They were united in marriage at the Church of the Holy Spirit in Lake Forest on October 22.

programs that supplement resources and equipment available to the Chicago Police Department (CPD). Officers in attendance shared information about the work they do including Officer Orlando who was there with his police dog Rich, members of the bomb squad who demonstrated the use of their heavy equipment as well as a robotic dog and others. department’s colors. Two speakers stood out who inspired the room and made everyone feel proud to be Chicagoans. Here are their speeches in their entirety from Rick Simon, Chicago Police Foundation Board Chair, and Chicago Police Superintendent David O. Brown. Mary Ann Rose, as CPF executive director, coordinated and planned the event to perfection. Rick Simon, Chicago Police Foundation Board Chair: “What is the Chicago Police Foundation? What do we do? We serve those who serve us. Those who walk the thin blue line

every day. If you have the opportunity, go to the park across the street from Soldier Field and, in the park, you will see a blue line in tile about half a block long. That’s what every police officer walks every night when they go out to work—they walk that thin blue line that separates you from those who want to do you harm. The police officer that walks that line makes sure you don’t come to harm. So, I say to you, what will we do for them? …A LEMART [Law Enforcement Medical and Rescue Training] kit, that I’m holding here, costs

about $100 and we’ve supplied thousands of these life-saving pieces of equipment to police officers. By supplying these, not only are we saving citizens, but the officers are looked at someone who is a savior, partner, and friend.” David O. Brown, Chicago Police Department Superintendent, also addressed the crowd with this inspiring speech [in part]: “What you do holds together the fabric of our democracy. Policing is what happens to ensure that everyone has a fair chance to have a safe neighborhood, a place that you go to work and enjoy the fruits of your labors safely. Is it imperfect? Yes, officers have to make split second decisions many times to save lives. But often, not much appreciation for what they do. YOU have made Chicago Police Officers feel appreciated. You have. You help us build trust when we risk our lives going into some of the toughest neighborhoods. You make us feel like our jobs are not in vain. You have made us feel like the loud voices are not the majority, that YOU are the majority and are the examples of what society really feels about us, and that they appreciate our sacrifice.”

SPECTACULAR! The last time we saw it was 2 years ago at the Auditorium Theatre. This production at the Lyric seems bigger, brighter and bolder, maybe it’s because the stage is larger at the Lyric which allows the dancers more room to shine and also more room to showcase the spectacular visuals! LIPS Chicago drag stars.

I felt a little guilty accepting the invitation for opening night of Chicago's newest drag club, LIPS Chicago on Friday, August 23. After all, my first date with Chuck was at the Baton Show Lounge, then located at 436 N. Clark, and it felt a little like cheating. The Baton, an iconic female

impersonator show that just celebrated 50 years in February, has always been our go-to place, taking family, friends and anyone who would say yes, there to party. The legendary tennis player Jimmy Connors was a guest of ours at the Baton and I still have photos of

him tipping Chilli Pepper onstage. On this night, I wondered who I would see at this new drag spot and if there would be a crossover of guests and/or performers between the two. I did see Mimi Marks, former Miss Everything who came to fame at the Baton and who is renowned for her beauty and popularity as a performer. I missed her when she left the Baton but now I know where to find her. And, as the LIPS show unfolded on opening night, I realized there is no need for concern as the two clubs are as

different as can be and there's certainly more than enough room for both, and then some! LIPS Chicago (2229 S. Michigan) is the 5th location of this 23-year- IMG_7145old drag/dinner chain (others are located in Manhattan, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale and San Diego). According to its founder and former drag perfomer himself, Yvonne Lamé, the Chicago location is the largest and grandest to date. Upon entering, guests part red velvet curtains and are smack dab in the middle of a set right out of Alice in

Wonderland. Designer Robert Tabar, along with performers Tori Sass and Kinley Preston, transformed this former Ford Motor Company showroom into the "Palace of Versailles but with a drag queen running it', according to Lamé. Four, 8-foot chandeliers and and an amazing, state-of-the-art sound and lighting system keep this room sparkling and humming all night long. Brightly colored decor features a giant floral bustier

and spilling out in ballgowns and stilettos before striking a pose on the red carpet for the anxiously awaiting paparazzi. The club is pegged "The Ultimate in Drag Dining–Where the Boys are Men and so are the Girls"! Its Diva cast features Shavonna B. Brooks, Mimi Marks, Ruff N' Stuff, Angel LeBare and Delilah J. Brooks with other performers that include the former Baton performer Victoria Le Paige, Ari Gato, Hinkypunk, Saffire Blue and many others. For the opening party, delicious appetizers were served but, in general, this is a serious restaurant too with dishes

developed by Tom Schmitt, of the award-winning Little Goat restaurant. All items are named after LIPS performers and include appetizers (elote corn fritters, crispy shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, short ribs, spinach and artichoke dip, fried calamari, chicken tenders, Caesar and IMG_7138wedge salads and a Too Wong Foo sampler platter) and entrees (shrimp fettucine alfredo, flat iron chicken with kohlrabi slaw, chicken penne pasta ala vodka, lobster ravioli, curried garden veggies, Dover sole, grilled salmon, cheeseburgers, filets and more). There is a different show every day of the week. On Wednesdays, Delilah J. Brooks hosts "Twisted Broadway", Thursdays, "Dinner with the Divas" hosted by Angel LeBare, Fridays and Saturdays, the

"Glitz & Glam" show is hosted by Shavonna B. Brooks, a South Shore native who worked in the Atlanta location for 5 years before returning home to her roots here in Chicago. A late night, adults-only show is in development for Saturday night called "Taboo", and Mimi Marks hosts a modern hits show, "Showstopper Sundays" on Sunday night. (For Sunday brunch, there will be a Dragalicious Gospel Brunch). This club is a great addition to our already rich drag show landscape. At the Baton, I feel like everyone there is family and it will always be my favorite but I'm glad to have LIPS in Chicago, dining, drag and drop dead decor? Who can beat that? Dance for Life finale choreographed by Randy Duncan. (Photo by Todd Rosenberg)

Dance for Life celebrated its 28th annual event on August 17 with a record-breaking crowd of over 3,100 dance enthusiasts at the Auditorium Theatre. I was so happy that co-chairs Tom and Mark Ferguson Gomez switched it up this year! Instead of going to the Hilton Chicago BEFORE the performance for the party/buffet/cocktails, they put it  where it should be, FOLLOWING the performance. This way, everybody could let their hair down and celebrate the amazing

the crowd couldn't stop clapping and dancing in their seats. At the end, a resounding standing ovation reverberated throughout the space. The crowd welcomed every number with enthusiasm and appreciation. The Ensemble Espanol Spanish Dance Theater dedicated its moving piece, "Mar de Fuego/Sea of Fire", choreographed by Carlos Rodriguez, to its late founder Dame Libby Komaiko. Hubbard Street Dance Chicago honored the life of founding member/teacher Claire Bataille in "Decadence/Chicago" by Ohad Naharin. The Joffrey Ballet performed two works, one featuring the much loved husband/wife duo of Temur Suluashvili and Victoria Jaiani who danced to an excerpt from Yuri Possokhov's "Bells." companies included Chicago Human Rhythm Project/Stone Soup Rhythms, Robyn Mineko Williams and Artists and Chicago Dance Crash that presented an exciting and athletic mix of hip hop and modern dance. A finale, featuring the world premiere of "Release" choreographed by Randy Duncan, combined dancers from various companies. A highlight for me during the party at the Hilton was seeing the joy on everyone's faces over the success of the event. I especially loved seeing Dance for Life co-founder Harriet Ross, hoisted onto the shoulders of the co-chairs for a victory dance! Photographer Ernest Collins

I first became aware of Ernest Collins, the renowned Chicago photographer, in 2018 during a Fleurotica fashion show at Garfield Park. He had been hired to photograph the models wearing their striking plant and floral fashions but, in true Ernest style, he upped the ante for these photos ten-

fold (as seen in the photo). I was covering the event for my Tribune column and immediately noticed him stationed in a corner with the most striking, hand painted back drop that I'd ever seen in my life. He's larger than life and was barking orders to the models on how to pose and I could sense he was frustrated. As I came to know him, this chaotic environment was completely the antithesis of

the way he likes to work. He's a perfectionist in the best sense of the word which means he knows what he wants and his instincts are spot on–honed, no doubt, during the 20+ years he spent working in Paris. His studio is awe-inspiring too with the most gorgeous fashion photos filling every wall. On the day of our shoot, he was assisted by

Ernest discovery (2)

A gorgeous model discovery (and before and after photos) by Ernest. (She's 82!)

Kendall Howard, a handsome, affable guy who obviously knows what Ernest needs out of a shoot and delivers. It was short and sweet but the results were unlike anything I'd seen before. He saw me in a way I've never seen myself. I've worked with a lot of photogs (I've been modeling since I was 13) but I've never come across one who was so sure of himself before–he sees things in a unique way

OMG) Since he posted her photos on his website (ernestcollins.com), she has become one very popular lady! And, get this, she is 82 years old! Herrington Inn & Spa

The beautiful Herrington Inn & Spa in Geneva, Illinois.

Chuck and I both love road trips, near or far, so for Labor Day Weekend, we were itching to hit the road. On Sunday, we took a ride to The Farm farmstand in Westmont. We were dying for some end-of-summer fresh veggies and this place at 34 E. 63rd St. in Westmont,

Ill. was just the spot. It was bittersweet to return there as we used to love taking my mother-in-law Jean Jordan there on weekends following a visit. We bought so much it was like we were getting ready to hunker down in a root cellar for the winter but it was such

fun. And then, on Monday, as I was perusing Instagram, I came across a bucolic photo of art expert Gary Metzner and his husband who were spending a stay-cation in Geneva, Illinois at the Herrington Inn & Spa. Well, that photo was all the inspo I needed so off we went, the three of us, on another little roadtrip. The clouds were like sky paintings they were so beautiful and, with the top

down, we were able to enjoy it ALL. The ride is less than an hour from Chicago so perfect for a quick getaway. We had been to Geneva once

before but it was a fast drive through. We planned on taking our time this time and got a chance to see just how charming Geneva really is. The Herrington Inn is located on a site that was the town's first known dairy dating to 1864 (on the riverfront at 15 S. River Lane). It was also home to Geneva's founding family, James and Charity Herrington. The Inn is a perennial AAA Four Diamond award winner and we weren't one bit surprised after we were given a grand tour. Most of the rooms are

equipped with fireplaces and balconies. The bathroom we saw could make the Ritz in Paris jealous! We also discovered that it is pet friendly (for small dogs and with a fee) but

still….I can't thank Gary enough for posting that sweet photo on Instagram–it was a great day in Geneva! (An aside about Gary, he was recently included in Art 50: Chicago's Visual Vanguard 2019. According to the article in NewCity Art, "Art 50 shines a light on this group of power players, whose work making our city’s art scene thrive too often goes unacknowledged. We bring you our take on those who wield the most influence in the Chicago art world, from nonprofits with humble beginnings to philanthropists with some of the deepest pockets in Illinois." Congrats Gary!

Walter Payton's family, including his daughter Brittney, wife Connie Norwood and son Jarrett, were on hand for the unveiling of the "Sweetness'" statue on September 3. The 12-foot, 3,000-pound statue is outside of Gate O at Soldier Field and was sculpted by Fisher Sculpture and designed by Populous. (A George Halas statue was also unveiled) “This is truly a good representation of Walter and who he is," said Connie Payton, his widow. "So we couldn’t be prouder.” Several of Halas’ and Payton’s relatives were in attendance, as well as Payton’s contemporaries, including Mike Ditka, Dan Hampton, Matt Suhey and Steve McMichael. A lasting tribute, so fitting!

Brenda McHugh

Brenda McHugh honoring the 50th anniversary of Special Children's Charities.

Longtime friend Brenda McHugh is honoring the 50th anniversary of the founding of Special Children's Charities by climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro! She is making the climb in honor of her late husband, Jack McHugh (McHugh Construction), who was a founder of the Charities. The event came to be following the first Special Olympics games held in Chicago in 1968. Jack put together a group of influential friends (he knew them all!) as a way to fund programs for people with

1 - Model Pat Cleveland chats with Hamish BowlesIt was one of the most beautiful events I’ve attended. Every guest who came through the front door of the Chicago History Museum looked like they were stepping out of the pages of Vogue – even emcee Bill Zwecker agreed
2 - A dreamy, floral bridal gown by Ungaro (1996-97)saying, “In all of the years, I don’t think I’ve seen a more glamorous, fashionable crowd.” From the moment you entered the building, you knew you were going to witness history. Beautiful models were stationed at every turn wearing the most dramatic fashions from the legendary Ebony Fashion Fair collection. They lined the staircases, draped languorously against

Eunice Johnson’s eye was unerring and she gravitated towards the bold and dramatic, much like I suspect she was as a person. I would’ve been screaming at people to “watch my train” – the true mark of an amateur – but not Pat: As she posed for photos, you sensed a life in front of the cameras, someone completely comfortable in her own skin. Vogue’s international editor-at-large Hamish Bowles spotted

My favorites were the Givenchy silver raffia

When honorary chair for the event, Linda Johnson Rice, was finally introduced the standing ovation was thunderous. Blog 1 - Dramatic space designed by architect Jeanne GangEXPO Chicago brought its world-class art show back to town after an eight-year hiatus and more than 3,000 attendees couldn’t have been happier! I'd been to one at the Merchandise Mart in an earlier incarnation and Blog 2 - David Manilow (“Check Please” creator) and Mary Kenneyagree with the event planners, that it wasn’t the place to be. Important art needs to be seen in a dramatic space and nothing could’ve been more exciting than being at Navy Pier’s Festival Hall for the opening night event, Vernissage. Benefitting the Museum of Contemporary Art, this Blog 3 - Jeanne Gang of Studio Gang Architectsnight included art, sculpture, photographs, large-scale installations and so much more. Blog 1I’m a great lover of antiques – my husband says I collect so many things that the only thing left that he can afford to collect are toothpicks…LOL! Blog 1 - Guests with Red Moon Theater actorsThe Office Max Green Tie Ball just keeps getting bigger and better! I didn’t think they could top last year’s theme – “The Wizard of Oz” – but with the fantastic addition of Red Moon Theater Company, “Alice in Wonderland” came Blog 2 - Joanna and Grant DePorterto life this year for more than 3,000 guests. Blog 1 - Jessica Radloff giving me a shout-out!The film critics’ award ceremonies are just a recent memory now and, hopefully, all of your favorites won! But for Glamour.com’s West Coast entertainment contributor Jessica Radloff, the Critics' Choice Movie Blog 2 - The HeartthrobAwards will forever be etched in her memory! Of course, there were a gazillion stars there since this is the largest film critics organization in the U.S. and Canada so Jessica happily conducted tons of interviews for the Glamour network including Melissa McCarthy (who was battling laryngitis), Judy Greer (who was hilarious according to Jessica), Ellie Kemper, Wendi McClendon-Covey (who said she would sign up for Blog 3 - OMG! She got her start in the entertainment industry by interning with NBC Sports in St. Louis, the “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno,” “The Young & the Restless” and Carsey-Werner. I loved Hector’s sassy designs and especially his copper colored leather- and fur-trimmed suit. His attention to detail is flawless and this collection highlighted his masterful skills.
