Former President Bill Clinton keynoted the Holocaust Museum & Education Center Humanitarian Awards dinner.

It was a jam-packed crowd of over 2000 for the Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center's Humanitarian Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency on March 31. To say it was an inspiring night is a gross understatement. Former President Bill Clinton was on hand to celebrate the Center's anniversary (he was on hand to open it 10 years ago too) and to honor Holocaust survivors (over 200 were in the audience). The Chicago Sinfionetta Project Inclusion Quartet set the tone for the evening playing soulful

melodies from the film "Schindler's List" as names and images of survivors scrolled across two oversized video screens. The Chicago Children's Choir lent their voices to the evening too singing special renditions of "One Day" (by Matisyahu) and "Hallelujah"

(by Leonard Cohen). The highlight of the evening, for me, was the speech delivered by Fritzie Fritzshall (Museum president and Holocaust survivor). Fritzie had spent two years at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp where her mother, two younger brothers and other family members were gassed. (To see this powerful video, click here) Fritzie shared her fears about anti-semitism and the sad fact that

it's still with us today. She urged the audience to "look our for your neighbors, speak out and never forget the Holocaust." John Ettelson, CEO William Blair, was the recipient of the Humanitarian Award. He spoke about the

Museum's mission to "remember the past and transform the future." Philanthropist Lester Crown introduced Governor J.B. Pritzker who conducted the conversation with Clinton. Their 30 minute convo touched on who helped shape Clinton's life (his maternal grandfather who taught him about civil rights); his greatest accomplishment while in office ("inclusive prosperity"); his biggest regret (not doing more to intervene in the Rwandan genocide) and his biggest fear for our country (cyber security). Giordano Dance Chicago performs at 2nd Legacy Ball.

Congrats to Giordano Dance Chicago on its 2nd annual Legacy Ball! Over 300 supporters enjoyed an evening of surprising dance performances, fun and delicious food, a live auction and a special tribute to two longtime supporters, Liz and Matt Connelly. The dance party on steroids was held at the Ravenswood Event Center, which surprisingly is one of the few venues I

hadn't been to before. I loved it! Vintage cars and neon signs from the Hayes Collection lined the walls and circled the floor in this huge space allowing guests a walk down memory lane while they enjoyed the party. Buffets were lavish,

tasty and catered by REC to perfection. The Giordano Dancers thrilled the crowd at every turn performing favorite high-energy numbers throughout the night. Executive director Michael McStraw and artistic director Nan Giordano welcomed the crowd with Nan introducing her friends, the Connellys. A short video surprised the honorees with a special performance dedication. Choreographer Marinda Davis dedicated her

The evening concluded with a performance of "SOUL", choreographed by Ray Leeper, followed by a live auction conducted by Nick Coombs of Leslie Hindman Auctioneers. A highlight of the auction was a chance to star in a production number with the dancers that was won by board member Chris D'hondt for $7,000. Congrats to ALL! Newly engaged lovebirds Kathleen Henson (wearing Escada) and Chris Sarpy.

It was a lovely affair as more than 120 VIPs raised a glass and toasted the whirlwind romance of local PR maven and CEO of Agency H5, Kathleen Henson, and Chris Sarpy, a health-tech sales executive and recent transplant from Dallas at the elegant DL Loft. Guests gathered in the stylish studio space of celeb event planner Debi Lilly of A Perfect Event, who curated an elegant evening of light bites, Champagne

and (the couple’s favorite) particularly potent old fashioneds. When they weren’t congratulating the happy couple, guests snapped photos in front of a floor-to-ceiling white rose flower wall or next to the fireplace, which had been stuffed with white and gold balloons. Henson’s close friends Dorri McWhorter (CEO of the YWCA), Courtney Wright (CEO of Gemini Builds It) Ellie Forman (VP of Community Relations of Mesirow Financial) and Heidy Best (renowned stylist) took the mic to deliver heartfelt (and occasionally tearful)

toasts to the betrothed. Henson and Sarpy’s love story is one for the books. The two met in Summer 2018 and quickly hit it off. A dinner in Chicago led to an unusual second date: A weekend getaway in Paris. From there it was time to introduce the families: her five kids (aged 10 thru 19) and his one son, 12. trips back and forth between Chicago and Dallas later, the pair knew it was real love. They got engaged at the very place they first serendipitously met through a mutual contact when Sarpy dropped to a knee at local hotspot Prime & Provision. The two plan to tie the knot in summer 2019.  Guests included Bela Gandhi and husband, Andrew Annacone, Dr. Lauren Streicher, Susanna Homan, Noren

Appearing on Kitchen Chat TV with hosts Margaret McSweeney and celeb Chef Jaime Laurita.

What a thrill appearing on the award-winning Kitchen Chat TV show hosted by Margaret McSweeney with celebrity Chef Jaime Laurita! The show was filmed in the elegant Viking Showroom at the Merchandise Mart, which was designed by Laurita as well as other locations across the country. Jaime serves as a brand ambassador and they are very lucky to have this one man dynamo–he does it all from cooking to designing to hosting his own show on TLC, "Make This Place Your Home." I had a blast chatting about my

passions and projects but, the most fun, was cooking with JAIME, who has worked for top stars including Madonna,

Sting, Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, Prince, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and many more. He's an author, graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and has his own Italian food and wine lines. Whew! Anyway, of course I was nervous, but Jaime can make a cat in a room full of rocking chairs feel calm. I'm definitely not a "cook" but I do love to cook and my fallbacks are always things I learned in the kitchen with my Mama Mary Johnson, who was like a second mother to me. She was born in 1903 in Tupelo, Mississippi and taught me all about authentic Southern cooking–dishes that included Navy beans and cornbread, greens, black-eyed peas, fried green tomatoes, fried chicken and so IMG_1368 much more. On this day, I even brought her Griswold cast iron skillet from the 1930s as a good luck charm and it worked! My chicken turned out fantastic! It's a simple recipe that I will share when I receive the show video but, suffice it to say, Jaime "Jaime-ized" it to make it even more delectable and I can't wait for you to see it! On another fun note, the show just won TWO Taste Awards recently in Beverly Hills!

Chicago Lights creator/photographer Abigail Zoe Martin, husband Leonardo and familyIt was a dream come true for acclaimed British photographer Abigail Zoe Martin when her passion project, Chicago Lights, presented in collaboration with White Color Productions and Agency H5, opened at the Zhou B Art Center on Friday, November 16. Since Abigail moved here from London three years ago, with Leonardo (her Kathleen Kenahan Henson in front of her photohandsome financial executive husband) and two beautiful teenage children, she has been quietly photographing people of interest. It began as a way to get to know the city and its people better but it grew into something much, much bigger. On her blog (chicagostoriesblog.com), before she put the Celebrity Chef Jamie Laurita and hubby Rich Lane in front of his photoexhibition together, she said she wanted to "create a space where portraits and quotes from people of all colors, economic levels, religions and ethnicities stand side by side, expressing their common humanity in a dignified way, a show With Zhou B Art Center co-owner ShanZuo Zhou in front of my portraitabout joy and the things we love." Following the night of the audio/visual exhibition of 81 notable and some not so notable Chicagoans, she expressed herself this way. "I am just coming up for air after that sparkly and magical evening. The sheer scale and Izzy Idonije and cute girlfriend Jatnna Toribio in front of his photodiversity of the event was so very exciting. The friendliness was amazing. All sorts of people were chatting to each other and it was so comfortable. It was exhilarating and felt so loving. I'm so thrilled that the idea of kindness and community permeated the room and that Former SNL star Tim Kazurinskyeveryone felt it. That for me is a perfect world."  I was fortunate to have been photographed by Abigail back in August….I was hoping to either shoot in Washington Park or in the gardens in front of our building but the weather didn't cooperate so we shot it in the lobby Peter Au, cute friend, Cynthia Au, Jon and Andrew Landanof my building. Rooney was just as happy being inside since he didn't want his little top hat to get wet. Abigail is a master at deep diving into people's characters. After she left, I felt like I'd been through a great therapy session. She Singer/songwriter Kiara Lanier in front of her enigmatic photoknows bull-sh_t when she sees it which is why it wa
s such an honor to have my photo included with so many wonderful personalities like celebrity chef
Jamie Laurita, Israel Idonije, Nan Giordano and her wonderful Giordano Dance Chicago dancers, Bela Gandhi, Tarrah Cooper, CM Punk, Chef Curtis Performers, exhibit subjects, Essence Walker and Carina SheroDuffy, Chef Bruno Abate, Kathleen Kenahan Henson (whose H5 Agency helped produce the event), Trisha Rooney, Tim Kazurinsky, the Zhou B brothers (ShanZuo ZhouShi and DaHuang ZhouShi), Lieutenant Governor-elect Juliana Stratton, Duchess Darling Shear (cabaret star who performed two Abigail Zoe Martin, Jason Brett and Dr. Lauren Streicherdramatic numbers), Kiara Lanier (whose songs made everyone weep with joy), Father Michael Pfleger, Secretary of State Jesse White, Dr. Lauren Streicher and her husband Jason Brett,  Essence Walker, Dr. Theri Raby, JoJo Baby, Giordano Dance Chicago's Nan Giordano had a whole wall dedicated to her talented companythe Mayor and so many more. There were names you recognized and those you didn't–they included tattoo artists, college students, small business owners, bartenders, a professional wrestler, a professor, a beekeeper, a firefighter, a doorman and more. Chef Bruno Abate in front of his exhibition photo The show is described as a raw unfiltered conversation with Chicagoans that illuminates the incredible kindness Martin found. Each photograph and conversation represents the :ecelectic and diverse cross-section of people: Martin met, all with :a wonderful inner light and a common thread of integrity, compassion Nina Mariano with Jason Chan in front of his photoand empathy." One of my favorites, Liz Dozier, former educator and star of the CNN series "Chicagoland," posed for her photograph on the front porch of a favorite student who died due to senseless gang/gun violence. The neighborhood was so dangerous, she had to have spotters on the street on the Chef Curtis Duffy and Jennifer McClain (Duffy was a subject in the exhibit)lookout. The night was filled with laughter, new connections, lots of Iphone photos, wine from Cream Wine Company, cocktails from CH Distillery, light bites from LM Catering and pizza from Connie's (thanks to Nina Mariano). Thank you Abigail for including me in this incredible exhibition. Every photo comes with an inspiring sound-bite from Abigail's int
erview with each subject, to hear any or all of the comments,
click here and to read Rick Kogan's wonderful Tribune column about the installation and Abigail's amazing process, click here!  On Abigail's Judge Erika Orr (R) and friend in front of her portrait Insta-feed, she summed the show up this way, "The main ingredients of this show are kindness and integrity. Let's spread as much of that as we can around the world and create some ripples." For sure, she achieved her goal and created not just ripples, but an entire ocean of kindness. (A coffee table book is in the works and photographs are available for sale at info@abigailzoemartin.com) (Come to the closing night party for the book at Zhou B Art Center on Jan. 8 and view the photos for the last time!)

Newly engaged Sheryl Dyer and Joe Schmidt! Such happy news! Longtime lovebirds Sheryl Dyer and Joe Schmidt made it official on Thanksgiving Day when he popped the question in front of family and friends at a Sea Island, Georgia get-together! Sheryl is the managing director of Van Cleef & Arpels and Joe is the president (and crack golfer) at Saint Patrick High School! Long may they love!! Woot! Woot!

Christmas is comin' your wayChristmas is in full swing at our house. Actually, we started decorating before Thanksgiving but don't judge me 'bro. It's our favorite time of the year so I'm always anxious to dust off the decor and fill the house with holiday cheer! Nothing makes me happier than to see every nook and cranny filled with something that makes me smile. I'm especially proud of our antique Christmas collection, but then, this stays up all year-round! Ho! Ho! Ho!

IMG_7659I hope you all had the happiest of Thanksgivings! We had a bittersweet one with my sister and brother-in-law (Nancy and #2Dr. Os Steinwald). Bittersweet because it was our last one together in Chicago as they're moving to Florida soon. We're losing so many friends to the enticing warmer clime of the Sunshine State. Just this week, beloved Jan Melk has decamped to her new home on Fisher Island and Leslie Hindman (Happy Birthday!) has made Palm Beach her permanent residence as well.  I hope they all know they haven't escaped us….we can drive ya' know!

Love, as always,

Candace

Blog 1 - Guests with Red Moon Theater actorsThe Office Max Green Tie Ball just keeps getting bigger and better! I didn’t think they could top last year’s theme – “The Wizard of Oz” – but with the fantastic addition of Red Moon Theater Company, “Alice in Wonderland” came Blog 2 - Joanna and Grant DePorterto life this year for more than 3,000 guests. From the moment you entered the steel factory grounds of A. Finkl & Sons, you knew magic was afoot when you walked the GREEN carpet! Dramatic visuals thrilled your senses everywhere you looked beginning with striking artwork from this classic book streaming down the sides of the Blog 3 - Emcee Val Warner with the Landon Twinstent as you entered the grounds. The Mad Hatter’s tent made me gasp as I saw oversized lamps and fabulous scenes projected on every wall. And the FOOD! There were more than 70 food stations and I don’t mean little tastings: This was REAL food prepared by Blog 4 - Interviewing Pete Wentz and girlfriend Meagan Camperchefs who wanted to be noticed. Zapatista’s carnitas on rice flower tortillas with jalapenos was mouthwatering and Flo & Santos served ravarogi (meat pierogies) with vodka Blog 5 - Sarah Cooley (2nd from R), Richard Roeper and friendscream sauce. Thank goodness I didn’t get to ALL 70 restaurants, although I did see great stuff from Frog & Snail, GT Fish & Oyster, III Forks, Rosebud, 25 Degrees, Province, Frontier and Public House. I was especially touched by Blog 6 - Jerry Roeper and David Lissnerthe offerings from the sweet kids from Bethlehem Lutheran Church who were on hand from the After School Matters’ Culinary Arts Program. Shannon Roche, Gisel Bahena, Abigail Garcia, Lily Harris and Omar Cardenas proudly displayed their works of art and told me how Blog 9important the program was to them. Gisel plans on working in the culinary arts and Omar was happy to have a place to go that would keep him “off the streets.” Abigail commented on the fun she had and how much she loved learning how to Blog 10 - Zac Stemer and Jordan Stemercook. He showed up on the green carpet around 9:45 p.m. with gorgeous arm candy, Meagan Camper. My friend and celebrity stylist Eric Himel styled them both to perfection saying, “For

When I asked him how he liked his outfit, he said, “I feel a little Farrakhan-ish but that’s okay, I'm a fan.” He was dancing and tweeting pics of the crowd as he deejayed. So cute! Meagan was in a sleek black dress from Top Shop with green Alexis Bittar earrings. Such a stylish pair! Blog 1 - Host Mike Wilkie and Terry LeontiosThe Chicago Air & Water Show is one of my favorite events every summer – Chuck and I always love seeing the rehearsals the day before when the planes fly right over our deck and terrify the Chihuahuas! And although Blog 2 - (Front) Tess, Jamie Gaballa, Whitey Pearson, (top) Charles Herrick and Chuckmuch is written about the show itself, I love the viewing parties thrown across the city to celebrate! I know the newly opened Hotel Lincoln hosted an event as did friends Michael Wilkie and Kristina and Mike McGrath. Wilkie's penthouse home – Blog 3 - Mr. and Mrs. Paul Episcope and friendhigh atop 1500 N. ARETHA FRANKLIN WOWS N’DIGO GALA CROWD

…PLUS WINDY CITY LIVE’S EXCLUSIVE CELEBRATION, ELI’S BAKES BIG CAKES, CUPID'S ARROWS FIND HEDY AND LAURIE, WORLD’S LARGEST BLOCK PARTY, MARCO'S BENEFIT FOR ONE HOPE UNITED, UPCOMING EVENTS, PEOPLE IN THE NEWS, NEW WATCH312.COM VIDEOS AND SO MUCH MORE!

Blog 1I knew she was called the “Queen of Soul” and I certainly loved her music but it wasn’t until I attended the 17th annual N’Digo Gala that I realized WHY she IS the Queen! This event was something special. First of all, I adore N’Digo Magazine Blog 2 - The One and Onlypublisher/founder Hermene Hartman. She is a one woman dynamo who loves her community and is the pure definition of giving back with her N’Digo Foundation, which she founded in 1995. This foundation awards merit-based college Blog 3 - 2012 N’Digo Foundation scholarship recipientsscholarships to students from Chicago and the suburbs and, to date, has awarded 286. Hermene’s friends and fans are legion and her Gala always includes top notch entertainment plus fun-loving, well-dressed attendees. In years past, performers including Blog 4 - KC and Cheryl Pearson-McNeil with Reverend Jesse JacksonBabyface, Ray Charles (with a full orchestra), Jerry Butler and Nancy Wilson, Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, George Benson, Ledisi and Seal have all appeared at this event. More than 1,500 guests turned out to celebrate the 50th anniversary of soul music as well as to support the foundation at this black-tie gala themed “Legends de Soul.” The dynamic and inspiring Blog 5 - The Impressionsprogram began with hosts Hermene and NBC’s Art Norman welcoming the crowd. Hermene introduced a video showcasing past scholarship recipients and what they’re doing now, saying, “These are the youths who’ve done it their way and are now living their Blog 6 - Quinton de’ Alexander with his designs and modelsdreams.” It was a wonderful confirmation of the good that this organization does. The 2012 winners were introduced onstage as Pastor Charles Jenkins and the choir of Fellowship Chicago Baptist Church performed their hit song, Blog 7 - Michelle Boone proclaims Aretha Day in Chicago“Awesome.” Music legends The Impressions took the stage as the concert began at 7 p.m. wowing the audiences with their infectious energy as well as their classic songs that Blog 8 - Aretha performs tribute to Whitneyincluded “Gypsy Woman” and “Super Fly,” which was an homage to the late great Curtis Mayfield. Comedian Jonathan Slocumb – a favorite of Ms. Franklin for his clean-cut style – had the crowd in stitches especially during his impersonation of Reverend Jesse Jackson who happened to be coming down the aisle at the same time. Arie Blog 9 - Hermene does some steppin’ to celebrate the night!Crown Theater was filled to capacity when the Queen took the stage and announced, “Hello Chicago, here I am!” Before her performance, Michelle Boone, the Mayor’s Cultural Commissioner, proclaimed June 30th to be Aretha Franklin Day in Chicago – it’s good to be Queen! She performed Blog 10 - Lindsay Rafaykotirelessly for at least two straight hours, never leaving the stage. (The only concession was removing her shoes.) She looked great in a white gown embroidered with large pink/red flowers and her voice rocked the rafters as she sang hits such as “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher” and “Skylark.” She introduced “Skylark” after telling of being turned away from “The Ed Sullivan Show” at age 17 when they told her they had Blog 11 - The dramatic Terrace at McCormick Placeoverbooked. She said, “This is the song I was going to sing.” She played the piano during a moving tribute to Whitney Houston as photos were shown overhead. “She was gracious, she was real and my Christian sister,” said Franklin of Houston. As the show continued, photos Blog 12 - The Wobble!were also shown of Aretha with greats such as Stevie Wonder, Clive Davis, Don Cornelius, Smokey Robinson and Ray Charles among many others. I couldn’t believe the energy this 70-year-old woman had! It was an incredible history Blog 13 - With comedian Jonathan Slocumbmaking moment as she finished her performance with “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” to standing ovations…oh what a night! Ms. Franklin has won 18 Grammys and is the first female to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I couldn’t believe she would allow anyone into her dressing room after this tiring performance (let alone me!) Blog 14 - The Impressions at the After-Party on the Terracebut she did and I will never forget it. My cameraman and photog were the only media allowed in her dressing room and I will be forever grateful to Hermene for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity…check out my Watch312.com video below! But the party didn’t stop there, as guests moved onto the terrace for more refreshments, small bites and dancing – I even learned how to do the Wobble!! BTW, watch for N’Digo Magazine in Blog 15 - Interviewing the Queenyour local Walgreen’s coming soon for just $1.00! Restaurateur Eli Schulman debuted the cheesecake at the first Taste of Chicago in 1980. Grammer, along with the leads from “Rock of Ages,” led the crowd in "Happy Birthday." Blog 1 - Lucky in love—Hedy and Mort make it official!Love was in the air for a popular and much-loved couple who “have been living in sin for the last 43 years," according to Hedy. Hedy Ratner, founder and co-president of the Women’s Business Development Center, and Blog 2 - Hedy in FINE form on her big day!Mort Kaplan, of Morton H. Kaplan and Associates, finally tied the knot after fooling friends and family with a few false starts (some would call them pranks) for the last few years. Last year’s party celebrated Hedy’s birthday with a fake wedding but this time, the nuptials were for real. Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg wrote a delightful column on this remarkable and loving couple and in his Blog 3 - Hedy and Mort dance for joy!interview, he asked them what had changed. “A couple of things,” said Mort. “I had a stroke in January and something happened in that period that I did not like. She wanted to get a prescription filled, and one doctor said, ‘Who are you? You’re the girlfriend.’ And I said, ‘She’s not the girlfriend!’ She was the quarterback of my recovery.” They were married on July 1st at Orchestra Hall. And they will CONTINUE TO live happily ever after!  🙂
