CHICAGO’S GREAT “GREAT GATSBY” PARTIES!

Maxim’s was the place to be on May 6th when Warner Brothers, Margaret O’Connor (MarCon Communications), Dr. Michael O’Meara and ReachMail hosted one of the hottest Gatsby parties in town. With Gatsby fever raging for months, this
invitation was coveted among the see-and-be-seen crowd and besides being a blockbuster film, Margaret had another reason for producing this event: Being a fellow Aussie like director Baz Luhrmann, she was keen to present this movie since most of the filming takes place in her native
Australia! The invitation requested guests dress in Gatsby attire with the added enticement of prizes for the most Gatsby-esque. (And it didn’t take much to encourage attendees to channel their best “Daisy” and “Jay” attire either!) Before the start of the film, Deputy Consul General of Australia in Chicago Lorenzo Strano
said he hoped the beautiful scenery would entice everyone to visit Australia. Next, Bill Zwecker and Chaz Ebert introduced the film. Chaz said “The Great Gatsby” was a favorite film and book of her late husband Roger’s and he had been eagerly awaiting the film and he
was “so jazzed” to see Baz Luhrmann’s version. She added that the last page of the book had been recited at their wedding. Bill said that he, too, was looking forward to Baz’s interpretation and that he had run into Mia Farrow (who played the part of
Daisy Buchanan in the 1974 version) in Connecticut a couple weeks earlier. After the film, guests headed over to Maxim’s, located in Chicago’s Gold Coast and once the hot spot for celebrities and the posh set back in its heyday. With its
striking plush red velvet and mahogany décor, Maxim’s was the perfect backdrop for this lavish Gatsby-themed party. At the entrance, under the canopied walkway, a blue 1931 Ford Phaeton replica, belonging to Mamie Walton and given to her at Maxim’s on her 50th birthday, was
parked alongside a lemon yellow 1947 Lincoln convertible (somewhat reminiscent of Jay Gatsby’s yellow Rolls Royce). Having their photos taken with the cars were men of style Michel Desjardins, Pierre Desy, Paul Iacono and William Holdeman, all wearing pastel suits and looking every bit the part of a 1920’s GQ fashion spread. Models dressed in ’20s attire draped themselves languorously beside the
classic cars in a fashion installation created by Kate Johnson Artistry. Others channeling Gatsby style included Mamie Walton, Margey Teller, Dr. Kathleen Albrecht, Laurie Davis, Jan Melk, Joan Colmar, Hazel Barr and couples John
Donohue & Julianne Glatz, Katie and Jason Mclenaghan, Kevin & Janine Larson and Stanley Paul & niece Joanie Legittino. Inside, music from the Stanley Paul 1920’s Theatre Collection mixed in with Jay-Z’s film soundtrack played while Gatsby-style attired guests table-hopped and chatted about Luhrmann’s dazzling 3-D
epic which captured the glamour, opulence and indulgent lifestyle of the era. Prosecco, served in keepsake flutes embossed with the Gatsby logo, flowed while servers wearing black flapper fringed dresses and sequined headpieces circulated with St. Claire vodka cocktails and
hors d’oeuvres. Models dressed in the theme of the night took pictures with guests throughout the evening and attendees took home gift bags filled with items from the sponsors that included everything from Warner Brothers’ water bottles and martini shakers
to iPad and iPhone covers and screen wipes. Prizes for “Best Gatsby Attire” included Gatsby beach bags, the book, soundtrack and more. For the film’s official opening at the Cannes Film Festival on
May 15th, there was a glittering red carpet premier. Director Luhrmann found it only fitting to premier the film first in Cannes since F. Scott Fitzgerald’s first draft of “The Great Gatsby” was completed on the French Riviera. (An extravagant
Australian premier is set for May 22nd.) Others guests seen in the crowd included Jacqui O’Neil, Dr. Michael O’Meara, Chicago Bear Henry Melton, former Bear James “Big Cat” Williams, Greg & Lily Gulik, Mary Sleger & John Murphy, Steve Traxler, Paul Iacono, Jesus Salgueiro, Sean Eshaghy, JP

Maxim’s backstory: This legendary hotspot opened in 1963 and quickly became the gathering spot for celebrities and Chicago’s elite. The striking décor was an exact replica of the famous
Parisian restaurant and throughout the years Maxim’s has been used in other films – there is an extended sequence in Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglourious Basterds” and Owen Wilson and Marion Cotillard’s characters travel back in time to the Belle Époque and have dinner together at Maxim’s in Woody Allen’s “Midnight in Paris.” (Photos by Jon Recana and Alex Riemann.)

Tiffany & Co. jewels sparkled at the recent Chicago screening of “The Great Gatsby” when they rolled out the red carpet on May 15th to host an exclusive screening at the Gene Siskel Film Center.
More than 100 by-invite-only guests attended the 1920’s Jazz Age-themed cocktail party and movie premier with Tiffany designs taking center stage as models showcased pieces that appear in the film. Many of
the jewels are from Tiffany & Co.’s famed 2013 Blue Book Collection. Featured statement pieces from the Collection included The Savoy, a diamond and
freshwater cultured pearl headpiece with detachable brooch and a brilliant necklace featuring a 49.59 carat emerald-cut aquamarine. A jazz quartet set the stage for the event while guests sipped signature cocktails, including “The Daisy” and “Red Berry Mint Julep.” Passed hors d’oeuvres
included griddled buckwheat blinis with American sturgeon caviar presented by Blue Plate Catering. As the lights dimmed, guests were handed boxes of truffle salted and caramel drizzled popcorn to enjoy while they watched the fabulous show! It was a night filled with fashion…but not the kind you are used to seeing on a runway: No my friend, this was the 79th annual School of the Art Institute of Chicago’s (SAIC) “The Walk,”
arguably the most creative and innovative fashion show of its kind in the country! More than 90 design students from SAIC filled the 90-foot runway with the most awe-inspiring, futuristic designs I’ve ever seen. Everything from clear plastic blazers to headgear resembling something Princess Leia would wear, it was a head-spinning evening for sure in
Millennium Park on May 3rd! The Legend of Fashion honor went to sisters Laura and Kate Mulleavy, award-
winning designers/creators of the Rodarte line which they founded in 2005. Their beautiful fashions are worn by First Lady Michelle Obama, Kiera Knightly, Cate Blanchett, Natalie Portman, Kirsten Dunst, Chloe Sevigny, Tilda Swinton, Dakota Fanning,
Scarlett Johansson and Reese Witherspoon to name a few and The New Yorker calls the sisters “the most celebrated American designers working today.” Philanthropist Melissa Sage Fadim was honored with the first ever
Heart of Fashion award. Even though the runway fashions were to-die-for, the 500+ attendees could’ve taken a turn on their own runways! I always love this event because the fashions are usually as innovative on the guests as they are on the models!
This year’s stand-outs included Ellen Sandor (who looked chic wearing a student-designed cape), Azeeza Kahn (who looks great in anything all the time), Laura Kofoid (whose outfit was colorfully creative), Quintin Primo III (who was wearing a Mick Jagger-inspired jacket) and Tommy Walton (a “Check, Please!” host contender who
always makes a fashion statement). Other notables included Creatures of the Wind’s Shane Gabier, Chris Peters and Michael Walls, Todd and Sylvie Ricketts, Ikram and Josh Goldman, Nina Ricci artistic director Peter Copping,
AJ Johnson, Kim and David DeJesus, Elle magazine’s Anne Slowey, Paper magazine’s editorial director Mickey Boardman, designer Maria Pinto, Ebony’s editor-in-chief Amy Dubois Barnett, and Bill Kurtis and Donna

Congrats to 25-year-old Raquel Pomplun for winning the Playboy Playmate of the Year title as the first Mexican-American centerfold! Fellow Playmate Dianne Chandler attended this year’s PMOY party at
the Mansion in LA on May 16th and shared the story with me: For many of the luncheon guests, the day began with a trolley ride from UCLA’s parking lot. This is usually the case with Hef’s parties since those fine folks in Holmby Hills frown
on having cars parked on their multi-million dollar manicured lawns. Dianne says she was helped from the trolley by an exceptionally handsome Latino man whose muscles sent her into a temporary swoon. The luncheon was
held on the front lawn under a lavishly decorated tent in shades of Playmate pink and white. Chandeliers were twinkling and the day was a typical gorgeous, sunny California dream. One of the drinks offered was a non-alcoholic cucumber/water concoction (How I miss the old days…I
don’t recall any non-alcoholic drinks even offered in the ‘70s!) Dianne insists it was “delightfully refreshing” so I’ll have to take her word on this. Cooper Hefner spoke first and introduced his dad, who was dapper in a white
suit and seated with his lovely new wife Crystal Harris. (Hef recently gifted Crystal with a $4-million home on Sunset Strip.) He introduced Raquel, noting that she was chosen by the magazine’s readers, editors, photographers and
the PR department of Playboy. He presented her with a check for $100K and a year’s lease on a red Jaguar F-Style convertible. (It’s good to be PMOY these days: The checks have increased tenfold since the
days when I was a PM!) Raquel, a biochemistry major and a classically trained ballerina, had a 103-degree temperature when she shot her pics. If this layout was Raquel on a “bad day,” I can’t imagine what her photos would’ve
looked like had she been feeling well! Married at age 22 to Alejandro Pomplun, she submitted her photos via Playboy’s website with her husband’s blessing. She said posing nude “made me more confident and less obsessive about little things. I learned to appreciate my body a
little bit more. Not a little bit more. I appreciate it, period.” At the end of the day, a group photo photo was arranged by handsome and beloved Playmate promotions director, James Gonis. There were Playmates in attendance from all generations and Dianne was thrilled that Hef
remembered her from her centerfold days. (They were both alums of the University of Illinois.) All past Playmates are invited to Hef’s parties and it’s always a thrill to connect with old friends. Dianne was one of
the few Playmates who was also a Playboy Bunny: A hometown girl from Berwyn who now lives in Atlanta, she was September 1966 Playmate. Her gatefold was shot by the legendary lensman Pompeo Posar (who also shot Patti McGuire’s beautiful layouts).
Congrats to Raquel and I’m not surprised about Hef's memory: He might be growing older but he always remembers the ladies who brought him to the party! The wonderful video below was created by fellow Playmate Miss May 2010 Kassie Logsdon, who captured the afternoon perfectly!

The Women’s Board of the Lincoln Park Zoo recently held a Preview Party at Paul Stuart to kick-off this year’s festivities for Zoo Ball 2013: Wild at Heart. The cocktail party was hosted by dapper Paul Kelly (regional manager of Paul Stuart) at the chic Paul Stuart Oak Street location. Guests of honor included Zoo Ball co-chairs Charlotte Monhart, Vasiliki Weiden and Jennifer Caruso and
Women’s Board president Peggy Swift White. Mark Walter (CEO of Guggenheim Partners and presenting sponsor of Zoo Ball 2013) and his wife Kimbra were also in attendance alongside Lincoln Park Zoo’s president & CEO Kevin Bell. Guests enjoyed small bites courtesy
of Boutique Bites paired with Maker’s Mark cocktails and Goose Island craft beer while perusing Paul Stuart’s expansive inventory and taking in the musical styling of jazz artist Kyle Asche. The buttoned-up preview party at Paul Stuart is just a little taste of what to come at Zoo Ball 2013’s annual affair on July 12th so mark your calendars now! Fleurotica 2013 will be presented at the Museum of Contemporary Art on June 12th. Co-chaired by Deirdre Koldyke, Shauna Montgomery and Whitney Lasky this flower-filled fashion show will also include a champagne reception with small bites. The show is a unique haute couture fashion extravaganza with all of the runway designs created from a variety of flowers and greenery. The Joffrey Ballet’s Auxiliary Board is hosting an unforgettable night filled with mystery and intrigue at its inaugural Joffrey Blue Masquerade Ball on June14th. Thanks to the Palmer House Hilton for including me as a member of its “Iron Chef” competition on May 7th. I partnered with PH Catering Director David Brandt for an event that put me clearly out of my
comfort zone! Executive Chef Stephen Henry conducted the competition between the four teams. A long table was laid out with every kind of kitchen goody imaginable and each team had a few seconds to grab whatever ingredients they thought
they would need to add to the “secret ingredient,” which turned out to be ground beef. My team quickly whipped up delicious blue cheese mini-burgers sautéed with mushrooms and onions. In the end
(and to our surprise), the team of judges selected our team as the winners! I love this hotel and it was thrilling to take a peek behind the scenes into its gorgeous, massive kitchen area and sample its always-delicious cuisine!!

COMMON THREADS CELEBRATES 10 YEARS AT WORLD FEST!

Common Threads celebrated its seventh annual World Festival and the 10th anniversary of this beloved non-profit organization, an after school cooking program that hopes to get one million American kids moving away from fast food and toward healthy meals with their families by 2017. It’s a lofty goal but with the
dedication and passion shown by founders Chef Art Smith, artist Jesus Salgueiro and executive director Linda Novick O’Keefe, it is sure to happen sooner rather than later. World Festival is Common Threads’ largest fundraiser and growing bigger and better every year. This year, more than 65 top chefs gathered at
Soldier Field on March 4th to offer specialty dishes to more than 500 supporters. “Top Chef” judge/emcee Gail Simmons kicked off the event at Kendall College with a VIP experience. Thirty-five lucky guests enjoyed a trolley ride to Kendall where eight Small Threads from a Common Threads class were waiting
to show off their cooking skills. They prepared a mouthwatering nut- and dairy-free pesto with roasted fruit and ricotta parfaits with famed Chef Bill Telepan, who flew in from NY just for the occasion. As guests arrived at Soldier Field, you could feel the excitement of the crowd and smell the
delicious scents from the 65 chefs cooking their hearts out for CT. It truly showed the spirit of our chef community as they rallied together to help support the much needed programs of this organization. Participating chefs included Bill Kim (Urban Belly and
Belly Shack); Rey Villalobos (Table Fifty-Two); Jess De Guzman (Sunda); Takashi Yagihashi (Slurping Turtle); David Blonsky (Siena Tavern); Tony Priolo (Piccolo Sogno Due); Ming Tsai (Blue Ginger); Rick Tramonto (Restaurant R’evolution);
Floyd Cardoz (North End Grill); Alex Rosado (Post 154); David LeFevre (Manhattan Beach Post); Beverly Kim and so many more. I was proud to co-host this fabulous event with Hillshire’s Jon Harris and Beam Global’s Mindy Mackenzie. “This is a one-of-a-kind event where
our community of chefs, donors, sponsors, board members and many more are able to come together to support our students,” said Chef Art Smith. “That is the positive attitude and enthusiasm we saw all across Chicago World Festival on Monday that
made this event so inspiring and meaningful for everyone who participated.” It was announced earlier in the day that CT is committed to getting one million children cooking healthy meals by 2017. To kick-start this five year campaign and anniversary year, CT has been gathering diverse
groups of supporters through a series of mini-summits in Chicago, LA, Miami, NYC and Washington, D.C. to focus on ways they can work together to address these nutritional issues affecting America’s children. Walmart announced that it would provide a $720,000 grant to expand CT’s programming to 20 more schools in both
Chicago and Miami. WE LOVE WALMART!!! Prominent guests at World Festival included food photographer Stephen

The UCLA Institute of the Environment and Sustainability (IoES) presented its second annual “An Evening of Environmental Excellence” recognizing Al Gore and Lyn Lear at the Beverly Hills
home of Jeanne and Anthony N. Pritzker. More than 350 guests attended this star-studded event including Barbra Streisand, Warren Beatty, Annette Bening, Courteney Cox, Sumner Redstone, Jeff Goldblum, Zach Braff,
Larry King, JJ Abrams and Alan and Cindy Horn. IoES is an organization dedicated to generating knowledge and solving regional and global environmental problems and this event recognized the extraordinary
environmental feats of Al Gore (former VP and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate) and Lyn Lear (co-founder of the Environmental Media Association). Lawrence Bender, Sydney Holland, Alexandria Jackson, Anthony N. Pritzker and Tina Quinn chaired the event which featured special performances by Grammy Award-winning artist Jason Mraz and actress and comedian Sarah Silverman. Actress Amy Smart and TV personality
Carter Oosterhouse served as masters
of ceremonies. Auctioneer Grant Snyder hosted a unique live auction which featured a one-week stay in a private villa at the beachfront Amanpuri resort in Thailand; an autographed Fender Sting guitar with a meet and greet Sting concert package; an autographed Bruce Springsteen guitar; and a Verengo Solar custom-installed solar power system. The event raised more than $1 million to benefit IoES, whose mission is to generate knowledge and solve regional and global environmental problems. Giuliana Rancic “squeezed” in a fun brunch to toast the end of the award season in LA. Some of Hollywood’s top stylists and fashion insiders joined the “E! News” host and “Fashion Police” commentator for an elegant brunch on
February 26th at the swanky SLS Hotel in Hollywood to toast the top colors from this year’s award season. Hosted by Crystal Light Liquid and Rancic, guests sipped and sampled this brand new product that debuted during award season – a pocket-sized bottle that can be taken on the go to
squeeze into still and sparkling water to add flavor and vibrancy. Attendees were treated to a fashionable morning of mixing, mingling and celebrating the end of another star-studded and successful award season. Giuliana talked about the
Oscar episode of “Fashion Police” where she selected Anne Hathaway as her pick for worst dress and Jennifer Lawrence who rocked it as her top pick on the red carpet. Before sitting down at the breathtaking table adorned with vibrantly colored Crystal Light Liquid-colored flowers, Giuliana asked guests
to raise a glass in honor of all the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to execute flawless red carpet looks. Giuliana gave a special toast to her eight-month pregnant celebrity stylist, Monica Rose, who also styles the Kardashian sisters. “Project Runway” alum and renowned fashion personality Nick Verreos also attended with his husband, David (the duo was spotted chatting with Giuliana about Verreos’ new fashion line, which is debuting later this spring) and celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik (with wife Liz) shared behind-the-scenes scoop from the Oscars (his celebrity clients include Beyonce, Zooey Deschanel and Anne Hathaway). Love Giuliana and I guess I have to try Crystal Light Liquid now, too! LOL!

On a related note, First Lady Michelle Obama and a girlfriend dined at Giuliana and Bill Rancic and the Melman family’s hotspot, RPM Italian. The duo enjoyed the light and modern Italian fare of
acclaimed Chef Doug Psaltis (the P in RPM). As part of a three-state, two-day tour, Mrs. Obama was in the Windy City as she celebrated the third anniversary of her anti-obesity program Let’s Move! Entering the front door of the packed River North restaurant looking chic in all black, a surprised room of diners
erupted in applause while she waved to her fellow Chicagoans before entering a private dining room. After spending an hour and half in the restaurant, she stopped to thank Chef Psaltis and the Melmans for a wonderful meal. Diners applauded as she left, as well! The next morning, Mrs. Obama attended a special event to mark the occasion at McCormick Place alongside Chicago
Mayor Rahm Emanuel, Nike president Mark Parker, and Olympians Serena Williams and Gabby Douglas. Only in Chicago, baby! Love all of the excitement in our town! 🙂

More than 300 guests escorted by more than 80 pet companions gathered at Galleria Marchetti on February 22nd for an evening of dinner and dancing at PAWS Chicago’s Seventh Annual Animal Magnetism. The event,
which celebrates people and their pets, raised more than $90,000 – money which will go directly to saving the lives of Chicago’s homeless animals. Lucky pups in attendance indulged in a doggie buffet and “pupcakes” from Swirlz
while their human counterparts enjoyed a lovely dinner buffet, fabulous silent and live auctions, raffle, dancing and insight into their pet’s thoughts through animal communicator, Alicia
Halloran. Hosted by PAWS Chicago’s Professional Board and emceed by 103.5 KISS-FM Morning Show’s Angi Taylor and former Chicago Bear Jerry Azumah, this magnetic event was co-chaired by Ashley and Noah Pettit and Courtney
and Eric Weiler. In addition, Congressman Mike Quigley was honored for his extraordinary leadership in animal welfare through advocacy and legislative reform to address pet overpopulation through spay/neuter programs, limit
high-volume breeding and impose harsher penalties for those who knowingly participate in animal fighting. The highlight of the evening was the live auction which raised thousands of dollars and featured items including luxury tickets to a Chicago Bulls game in the BMO Harris Club suite with a jersey and basketball signed by Joakim Noah, a culinary party for 10 with Chef Austin Yancy, a day on the set of the HGTV’s “Kitchen
Crashers” with host Alison Victoria and a VIP trip for two to Las Vegas. PAWS Chicago is committed to saving the lives of more than 6,000 homeless cats and dogs this year and will spay/neuter more than 18,000 pets, the majority of which are free for families in underserved communities. The Auxiliary Board of the Art Institute hosted its fourth annual “Uncorked: A Case for Wine,” a wine- and food-tasting event benefitting the Art Institute of Chicago recently. More than 250 guests arrived at The Casino Club in Chicago to participate in wine tasting as well as a live and silent auction. Auxiliary Board member of the Art Institute and executive vice president of Auctions by ATG Diana Peterson hosted both the live and silent auctions. This

Over the weekend, Hennessy V.S presented an ‘80s-themed birthday bash for popular NYC promoter and socialite Legendary Damon at Good Units in the Hudson Hotel. GLAMOUR, GLITZ AND FRIENDS: CHICAGO’S OSCAR PARTIES ROCKED!

There were so many Oscar parties around town that it was a hard decision to choose just one. But the event hosted at PUBLIC by GlossedandFound.com’s
Graham Kostic and Monika Dixon was not to be missed! The red carpet snaked from the lobby into the library where these two party pros had prepped the room to perfection. A towering cake
by Jacob Neminarz (of the family-owned Sugar Hills Bakery) had created an Oscar-worthy delight that included edible film reels! Besides Dixon and Kostic, glam host committee
members included Alexis Cozzini, Jessie Kalin and Darnell Robinson. I love the library space at this hotel and think it’s so intimate and chic and the back viewing room served as THE
perfect place to watch the 85th Academy Awards in style! I saw so many friends there like Leah Chavie, Jared Hatch, Lonnie Rodriguez, Eva Pawlus, Yana Nirshberg, Paul Iacono, Geoffrey Dixon, Kasia Konair, Mary Kostic, Drew
Doleski, Victoria Olivares, William Heard, Ricardo Sebastian, JuJu LaCour, Eva Daiburl, Amelia Canham Eaton, Samantha Voss, Gregory Fear, Greg Dillard, Monika Gabal, Eva Starzomski, Suzan Faber,
Anthony Berg, Thai Tyler, Darnell Robinson, Amy DiTomasso, Jessi Sheehan, Anna Majewski, Morgan Byrne, Marisa Ruis and Laura Modica among many others
(around 120 in all). Guests enjoyed two large viewing screens and DJ Kamil Bartoszcze kept the crowd swaying to the music. Partygoers received mini bottles of Moet & Chandon champagne and, besides the Sugar Hills Bakery cake, the sweets table also included treats from Amy DiTomasso’s Sugar Chic Designs. All of the guests came dressed to
impress but the Best Dressed Award winners were Amelia Eaton (The Chicago Life Blog) and
Darnell Robinson (of Christian Louboutin). And my highlight of the Oscars? Seeing Charlize Theron’s stunning new close-cropped haircut! This woman could look fabulous in a garbage bag but her new short do made her look exceptionally stunning. Hope you enjoyed your Oscar party, too!

Another top Oscar party was a more intimate affair but no less delightful! Hostess with the mostest Helen Melchior hosted her own get-together at her fabulous Nate Berkus-designed
apartment on Lake Shore Drive – even her hall statue was draped in a red feather boa, alerting to the surprises within. Helen had her own red carpet which flowed down her hallway and into her home theatre (aka her cozy den). As we all enjoyed the show, the food never stopped
coming…delightful treats from Helen’s favorite, Benchmark (located at 1510 N. Wells), included sliders, chicken roll-ups, lamb chops, quesadillas and more. Helen prepared her specialty, homemade guacamole, along with tasty Italian meatballs and roasted shrimp and sinful apple tarts came courtesy of
George Jewell. Guests included Leslie Hindman, George Jewell, John Walcher, Joan Colmar, Ken Norgan, Cammie Britton, Tara Klecka, Phil Lumpkin and Bill Tadford, Beth Silverman and Christopher Clinton Conway. We were all given ballots to vote for our choices but in the end, Joan Colmar walked away the winner. A fun night with friends…what more could you ask?

Now in its fifth season, EMERGE! A Fashion Runway Show created and produced by Dionne Williams of D. Williams Public Relations Group, featured an eclectic
ensemble of artists during New York Fashion Week 2013. These aspiring fashion designers from around the world showcased their artistic genius with amazing collections that powered down the runway. Highlights
included celebrity stylist and lifestyle guru Phillip Bloch honoring fellow style guru Mikki Taylor, a woman who has given birth to a culture of glamour, sophistication and innovation, with the Fashion Innovator Award.
This invite-only affair played host to retail buyers, fashion influencers, top fashion editors, tastemakers, socialites and an amazing array of celebrities who included honoree Mikki Taylor (fashion icon), Phillip Bloch (brand ambassador), Regina Taylor (actress), J. Alexander (“America's Next Top Model”), Dwight Eubanks (“Real Housewives of Atlanta”), Carissa
Rosario (international model), Justiin
Davis (“Boardwalk Empire”), Phyllis Yvonne Stickney (actress) and many more. The Broad Street Ballroom came to life with the thrilling fashions from EMERGE! designers. They included:
Bishme Cromartie – Bishme Cromartie’s collection is edgy sophistication with well-constructed pieces. His collection was cohesive and yet unafraid to take risks.
Parul Aneja – Parul Aneja’s collection adorned the runway with vibrant colors inspired by her hometown of New Delhi. She
specializes in wedding gowns, cocktail dresses, prom and eveningwear.
Deidre Jefferies, ESPION Atelier – ‘ESPION’ (French
for the English word ‘spy’) Jefferies defines her design aesthetic as “the future of classic clothing.” Her strong, yet sexy collection embodied a sleek sophistication combining male and female elements into a luxury line committed
to quality.
Bernice Morgan, Designersberg – A full line of beautiful custom-made

The Chicago Sky’s Swin Cash’s involvement in Girls in the Game (GITG) is more than just as an honored champion at the gala event. In September 2012, one
month after receiving her second Olympic gold medal, Swin launched The Sport-It Girl Initiative. Her vision was to develop a mentoring program for middle-school aged girls to honor the 40th anniversary of Title IX (the landmark legislation banning sex discrimination in schools, whether it be in academics or athletics) which had a significant
impact on her own life. She partnered with Girls in the Game and works with 40
girls from the Chicago Public Schools system who are involved in sports and collaborated with the Chicago Sky, Sky Cares Foundation and Nike to make the launch a memorable experience for the girls. The initiative provides in-depth mentoring and programming
focused on sports, leadership, health and community service. Sport-It-Girl is off to a great start and Swin regularly interacts with her girls through social media. One week later, Swin
was at McCormick Place as one of a handful of elite athletes who had been invited to participate alongside First Lady Michele Obama for the launch of Let’s Move Active Schools, the newest

More than 400 people recently attended Chef Art Smith’s Big Gay Ice Cream Social at the James Royal Palm Hotel in Miami Beach. Eating handmade ice cream poolside by Real Sorbet of Miami and floats created by the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck, attendees came together to help raise awareness for
marriage equality in Florida. (Recently, Chef Art and his life partner Jesus Salgueiro also co-hosted the Equality Illinois Justice for All Gala in Chicago.) Celebrity chefs and a famous female impersonator brought some noise to support marriage equality in the middle of the SOBE Food and Wine Fest.
Chef Art said, “For a place known as the sunshine state, it’s in the darkness over LGBT rights. My Florida will see the sunshine. It’s the place where I was born and it’s the place where I found Jesus on South Beach. LOL! It’s the place we will return to my family’s historic farm
but, we will return as a recognized legally married couple.” Guests in attendance included Andrew Zimmeren (Discovery Channel), Duff Goldman (Food Network), Johnny Luzzini (“Ace of Cakes”), Spike Mendelsohn (“Top Chef”), Anne Burrell (“Top Chef”), Sunny Anderson (Food Network), Lorena Garcia (“Top Chef Masters”), JM Hirsh (AP Food Editor) and famed gay icon Chi Chi Larue.

The Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum, in conjunction with Johnson Publishing Company, will host the Costume Ball on March 15th beginning at 6 p.m. with cocktails and an exhibition preview of “50 Years of the Ebony Fashion Fair.” This one-of-a-kind exhibition will explore the 50 year history of Eunice W. Johnson’s ground-breaking fashion show, which brought
couture fashions to African American communities, while raising millions of dollars for charity. More than 60 garments, including works by Oscar de la Renta, Christian Dior, Stephen Burrows and Yves St. Laurent, will be on display. This black-tie event is chaired by Linda Johnson Rice. CHICAGO BEARS ISRAEL IDONIJE AND JERRY AZUMAH “LAUGH OUT LOUD” FOR CHARITY

A cold and rainy night didn’t keep the crowds from packing the house at the hot River North nightclub, Untitled, for the second annual Laugh Out Loud comedy show on January 29th. Chicago Bear Israel Idonije and former all-pro Chicago Bear Jerry Azumah teamed up to benefit their respective charities for a night that included some of the top comedic talent around. Jerry’s charity, the Azumah Student Assistance Program (ASAP) Foundation, develops innovative and unique programs and charity events designed to raise funds for disadvantaged students. Israel’s charity, the Israel Idonije Foundation, inspires underserved communities by providing programs focused on social and emotional life skills. Together, these great superstars created an evening that all those in attendance won’t soon forget. By the end of the night, my sides hurt from laughing so much at the show’s co-hosts WGCI’s Leon Rogers and Brian Babylon, along with featured comedians Damon Williams (of BET’s "Comic View" who also served as the opening act for the legendary Kings of Hollywood Comedy Tour), Adrienne Irmer (Perri’s darling daughter), Ali Clayton, Tony Scolfied, Ron Baker, Jr. (handsome brother of Ryan), Mitch Hurley, Erica Clark and Willie Lynch. The fun-filled night began with a VIP reception in the club’s exclusive bar area behind the main stage. Here, guests got a chance to meet the hosts and mingle with the comedians as well as enjoy a fabulous buffet. Legendary Chicago Bear, 1985 Super Bowl MVP and Class of 2011 Pro Football Hall of Fame inductee Richard Dent was the featured guest speaker at the Union League Club reception and luncheon held on January 29th. Richard was there to discuss his book, "Blood, Sweat & Bears," written with veteran Chicago Tribune sportswriter Fred Mitchell. After lunch, Fred interviewed Richard as he recounted stories in the book and playing football for the fiercest, most dominant defense in NFL history AND playing the game before violent helmet-to-helmet tackles were forbidden. He spoke about growing up in a family with nine kids and having a mother who did whatever it took to make ends meet. Richard asked the audience, “How many of you have seen the movie, ‘The Help’? That was my mom and she made the best biscuits around.” Fred fielded questions from the crowd and as the luncheon came to a close, Richard shared this with the audience, “You are the first to know I will be carrying the Vince Lombardi trophy onto the field at Sunday’s Super Bowl game!” Two guests at the luncheon who sat with Richard and Fred at the Author’s table were Sheila Dorman (Sr. VP and COO of Northern Trust) and Margaret O’Connor (the producer of Richard’s pre-induction Hall of Fame celebration at Carnivale for 450 people). Sheila and Margaret also traveled to Canton, Ohio, for Richard’s induction into the Hall of Fame in August 2011. Water is one of the most important elements on earth and an exciting new documentary, “Water Pressures,” a film that features Northwestern University students and desert villagers in water-distressed Rajasthan, India, will premiere on March 20th at the Wilmette Theater (1122 Central Ave). Produced by Artistic Circles’ Ann Feldman, the film is hosted by "Entourage" star Adrian Grenier and directed by Bill Natale (executive producer for Illinois Centers for Broadcasting and Watch312.com), who also served as the associate producer of the doc. The story demonstrates how understanding, education and collaboration can lead to sustainable solutions, particularly between developing and developed countries. Based on the relationships created by the documentary, Northwestern is now setting up a research site in the desert at the Jal Bhagirathi Foundation to study and assist with desalination and water-related diseases. “Water Pressures” premiered at the Chicago South Asian Film Festival, winning merit awards for a video for social change. It has been translated into Hindi with plans to be broadcast in India as well as on public TV stations nationwide beginning March 20. “Water Pressures” is presented by WTTW Chicago and will be nationally distributed by American Public Television. More Chicagoans making a national impact include the delightful owners of Eli’s Cheesecake, Maureen and Marc Schulman: This year marks the fourth inaugural cake that Eli’s has been invited to create! Both of former President Bill Clinton’s inaugurals and President Obama’s 2009 Commander-in-Chief Ball all had giant Eli’s cheesecakes! This year’s 500-pound creation was served at the Staff Ball after Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga performed. The President, First Lady, Vice President and Second Lady were also in attendance. Maureen says, “It was a cheesecake frenzy!” The cake also appeared on the Jumbotron much to the delight of the Schulmans! I received a very unusual invite for the 108th Twelfth Night Masquerade. What the hell is this, you ask? I know, I asked myself the same question so I googled it: It turns out this is a very exclusive party (by invite only and, by this I mean only you and not your spouse or a plus-one which irritated me to no end). However, my natural curiosity got the best of me so I just had to go. From what I discovered, this event was founded in 1905 by Bill Gamble (of Procter & Gamble fame) and his high-society cohorts, who banded together to break up the doldrums of winter in Chicago by inaugurating the Widow & Widowers Ball. From the start, it was a party with an irreverent twist: Gamble and company drew up a list of all the couples in their social circles, decided which member of each couple they deemed the most fun and invited that person alone to attend the ball. By 1920, this rule was relaxed – no doubt because of the outrage from the other partner – and the name was changed to The Twelfth Night Masquerade. Billy Gamble died in 1921 but the party continues as his lasting legacy to Chicago social life. Twelfth Night has been a fixture on the Chicago social calendar for more than a century and for many remains a family tradition with current guests, their parents and even their grandparents in attendance. In order to receive an invite, you must be known to the Committee of Twelve. Oh, and the evening was also a celebration of charming Sargent McCormick’s 30th birthday. 🙂 I could only attend the pre-party cocktail get-together at the Pump Room but the party hit its zenith later with 600 guests in costume in the Gold Coast Room of the Drake Hotel. No press allowed…oops, there goes next year’s invite! 😉 Their motto: Let good taste prevail to no avail. Their rule: No equestrians or mounted pedestrians.

I love this event that benefits Atia’s Project Ladybug. On March 23rd, HGTV host and “hottie-with-a-heart” Dina Manzo will host the third annual Ladybug Bash to benefit Comer Children’s Hospital at the Chicago Cultural Center, located at 78 E. The Civic Opera house will be transformed into 1920’s Paris with the lower-level Opera Club morphing into the Moulin Rouge, the foyer and mezzanine levels will become the “Streets of Paris” with French gourmet samplings and spectacles, the Cabaret will showcase stars of the Lyric’s winter productions performing non-opera repertoire and will include singers Jamie Barton, David Cangelosi, Elizabeth Futral, Amanda Majeski, Ana Maria Martinez, Lucas Meachem, Albina Shagimuratova and Andrea Silvestrilli. Her sell-out show, which channeled Nina Simone, was a huge hit at City Winery last month and her recent show at Davenport’s, a tribute to Janis Joplin, was also a sell-out! The Black History Month Innovation Panel will be hosted by the Women’s Innovation Network on February 19th at the International House at the University of Chicago. Panelists will include beloved PR queen Dori Wilson (Dori Wilson Public Relations), Jetta Bates (award-winning marketing expert and creator of JettaSetting), Makeba Kedem-Dubose (artist, curator and art educator) and Dawgelene Sangster (author and founder of Think Royally Inc.). Dancing with Chicago Celebrities is an annual star-studded charity ball presented by Arthur Murray to raise funds for the fight against breast cancer. Over the last seven years, the ball has raised more than $800K which has been donated to deserving charities who champion this cause. The 8th Annual Dancing with Chicago Celebrities will take place March 8th at the Hyatt Regency and will include beloved WGN’s Dina Bair (I’ve seen this woman dance at Newsapalooza and I hope the other competitors are rehearsing NOW!), WBBM-TV’s Pam Jones, ’06 champion Chef Rick Bayless, ’12 MVP Kim Vatis (NBC5) and ’12 champion and former Chicago Bear Desmond Clark, NBC’s Stefan Holt, WGN’s Frank Holland, ABC’s Michelle Gallardo, Miss Illinois Megan Ervin, former Chicago Bear Anthony Adams and Christina Filiaggi (WLS-AM Radio 890). The Chicago Film Critics Association (CFCA) will celebrate its 24th annual Awards Show on February 9th at the Muvico Theaters in Rosemont, located at 9701 Bryn Mawr Ave. Nadine Velazquez and Joe Perillo will emcee and award-winning actress Jane Lynch will receive the Comedia Extraordinaire Award at 7:30 p.m. at the theater. I love it that Playboy glamour girl and perpetually fit Jenny McCarthy (40!), loves Chicago’s delicious Giordano’s pizza…and stuffed pie at that! In a recent cover story article in Shape Magazine, she says she gets her Windy City fix by having it shipped to LA when she craves a taste from home. She said, “There’s this place in Chicago called Giordano’s which has the best deep-dish pizza in the world. It’s my therapist, my best friend and my boyfriend on Friday nights.” I doubt that she’s ever very lonely but nice to know she loves one of Chicago’s many legendary institutions!

The Adler Planetarium will celebrate its 10th anniversary with a reception hosted by new president Dr. Michelle Larson and chairman of the board, John Estey, on February 7th. The night under the stars will begin with a cocktail reception at 5:30 p.m. in the Adler’s Sky Pavilion followed by a program honoring featured speaker and New York Times best-selling author of “Galileo’s Daughter” Dava Sobel.
