1 - Joffrey dancers Temur Suluashvili and Victoria JaianiThe Joffrey Ballet’s Auxiliary Board hosted its third annual Pointe of Departure at the elegant space of Block 37 on February 7th. It attracted more than 200 guests and helped raise $25,000 to support the Ballet’s
2programs and performances. The theme of this year’s event was taken from the title of The Joffrey’s Winter Program, “American Legends,” which features pieces by Jerome Robbins, Twyla Tharp, Gerald Arpino and Stanton Welch. (Arts critic Sid Smith

I met Val when she was still working at WGN-TV and even then her energy and charm were off the charts. And, as WCL's executive producer Marlaine Selip once told me, "She is lightning in a bottle" …and her legion of fans couldn't agree more. When I asked Jeff what he loved most about his Val, he said, "Even with all of her many successes, she still remains the same person." Governor Pat Quinn declared "”an historic week in Illinois” and on Valentine’s Day, it became just that when the Illinois Senate passed the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act on a vote of 34-21. (If the bill becomes law, Illinois will become the 10th state to allow same-sex couples to marry and Gov. Quinn will become the sixth consecutive Catholic governor to sign marriage equality legislation). At the recent Equality Illinois Justice for All Gala, co-chaired by Chef Art Smith and his partner/husband Jesus Salgueiro, Quinn issued a call to arms for supporters of the Religious Freedom and Marriage Fairness Act. “This year we're going to pass and make a law called marriage equality in Illinois,” Gov. Quinn said. “When people band together and work together using the power of democracy, we can make sure we pass a landmark law. And I hope everybody works together in these next few weeks so we get the votes in the Senate, to get the votes in the House, and make history in Illinois.” On the night of February 9th in the Chicago Hilton, the biggest black-tie gala for LGBT equality in the Midwest was a combination celebration of the coming vote and a call to action. “To all those who said ‘it’s not gonna happen,’ it is happening,” Equality Illinois CEO Bernard Cherkasov told the crowd. “The freedom to marry is unstoppable; in the Land of Lincoln, it is inevitable!” The bill has been endorsed by more than 300 members of the clergy and top Illinois business leaders and according to polls, the freedom to marry has the support of a majority of Americans and a majority of Illinoisans. In addition to Quinn, gala attendees included Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who is part of the national group Mayors for the Freedom to Marry. Scores of other federal, state and local officials attended the event, including U.S. Rep. Mike Quigley, U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider, Lt. Gov Sheila Simon, Attorney General Lisa Madigan, Illinois Comptroller Judy Barr Topinka, Illinois Senate President John Cullerton, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle, Cook County State’s Attorney Anita Alvarez and the bill’s legislative sponsors, state Senator Heather Steans and State Rep. Greg Harris. Among the 1,200+ attending guests, the organization hosted local business leaders who included Hillary and Danny Wirtz, Col. James Pritzker, Laura Ricketts, and other Chicago notables. At the gala, Senator Steans was honored with the Equality Illinois Freedom Award for her indefatigable work on behalf of equality. The Fashion Show Production class at The Illinois Institute of Art- Schaumburg is hosting its annual fashion show, Awakening, at the Meadows Club (2950 W. The Smithe brothers (Tim, Walter and Mark), known across Chicago for their witty and memorable Walter E. It’s all about the kids for the “Mini Me Fashion Show” coming March 10th. Michael Kutza accepting the Sydney Pollack AwardCongrats to Chicago International Film Festival founder Michael Kutza on his latest accolade! The American Cinematheque honored him with its Sydney Pollack Award at the Beverly Hilton on November 15th. Accepting the award, Kutza recalled meeting Pollack in 1986 shortly after he had directed “Out of Africa.” They became good friends with Pollack becoming a mentor and encouraging Kutza to support independent film. This is only the third time this award has been given. Past recipients were the directors of the Sundance and Telluride Film Festivals! Thanks for all you do Michael! We are all lucky to know you!

As always, the extensive silent auction offerings kept the black tie clad attendees busy bidding while they sipped cocktails and mingled with friends before the doors were swung open to reveal spectacular décor by Tom Kehoe Designs, the Blog 3 - Tina Weller, Myra Reilly and Lynda Silvermanorganization’s much loved design expert. Co-chaired by Kimberly Gleeson and Elizabeth Brodsky, the night was themed “With Gratitude” and featured a parade of past gala chairs who were led into the ballroom on the arms of tuxedo clad dancers Blog 4 - With Mary Pat Burns, Tracey DiBuono, Sheryl Dyer, Sharyl Mackey, Jean Antoniou and Sheila O’Gradyin top hats. Twenty-five former gala chairs were in attendance beginning with Marguerite Hark, who chaired her gala in 1983. This organization is one of the oldest in Chicago having been founded Blog 12 - Cookie Cohen, Stuart Feinberg and Mamie Waltonin 1890. Originally created to serve the needs of the city’s most vulnerable, particularly immigrant women and children, the club hosted bazaars and participated in sewing circles to raise the revenues they needed to support their charitable work. Celebrity photographer Steve Starr passed away suddenly on November 12th, a month to the day before an event that he had been planning for over a year, “The Blog 2 - By Tyler Curtis (Darkroom Demons)Face of the News”. The event has now turned into a celebration and tribute to this beloved man’s life. I never heard him say an unkind word, he always had a smile on his face and encouraged everyone around him to have one on Blog 3 - By Mila Samokhinatheirs. No one cared more than he did if you looked good in your photo. He stayed up through the wee hours sending out individual pics from the evening to those people whose photos he’d taken. He taught us how to pose, he taught us Blog 4 - My dear friend –RIPhow to live. He was a shining example of how to make the most out of life, live every moment, enjoy every party and cherish your friends. God is smiling bigger and leaning forward, just a little bit. We will miss you, Steve – our town will never be the same without you. Please join me in a celebration of Steve on 12/12/12. Besides ticket sales, donations are gladly accepted.

Blog 1 - Guests with Red Moon Theater actorsThe Office Max Green Tie Ball just keeps getting bigger and better! I didn’t think they could top last year’s theme – “The Wizard of Oz” – but with the fantastic addition of Red Moon Theater Company, “Alice in Wonderland” came Blog 2 - Joanna and Grant DePorterto life this year for more than 3,000 guests. From the moment you entered the steel factory grounds of A. Finkl & Sons, you knew magic was afoot when you walked the GREEN carpet! Dramatic visuals thrilled your senses everywhere you looked beginning with striking artwork from this classic book streaming down the sides of the Blog 3 - Emcee Val Warner with the Landon Twinstent as you entered the grounds. The Mad Hatter’s tent made me gasp as I saw oversized lamps and fabulous scenes projected on every wall. And the FOOD! There were more than 70 food stations and I don’t mean little tastings: This was REAL food prepared by Blog 4 - Interviewing Pete Wentz and girlfriend Meagan Camperchefs who wanted to be noticed. Rub BBQ Company served a BBQ martini consisting of coleslaw, cornbread, baker beans and smoked pork shoulder all in one cup! Zapatista’s carnitas on rice flower tortillas with jalapenos was mouthwatering and Flo & Santos served ravarogi (meat pierogies) with vodka Blog 5 - Sarah Cooley (2nd from R), Richard Roeper and friendscream sauce. Thank goodness I didn’t get to ALL 70 restaurants, although I did see great stuff from Frog & Snail, GT Fish & Oyster, III Forks, Rosebud, 25 Degrees, Province, Frontier and Public House. I was especially touched by Blog 6 - Jerry Roeper and David Lissnerthe offerings from the sweet kids from Bethlehem Lutheran Church who were on hand from the After School Matters’ Culinary Arts Program. Proud ASM Culinary Director/Chef Gloria Hafer said, “These students are special to us and I know they will succeed because of the Blog 7 - After School Matters students with their creationsconcern of the people here who have taken an interest in the program. I’m working diligently through ASM to promote self-esteem, excellence, and appreciation of the culinary arts.” Students in the program prepared, displayed and served more Blog 8 - Shari and Paul Duffythan 2,000 “Alice in Wonderland”-themed cookies and cakes. I watch a lot of master chef shows and these kids could teach them a thing or two from what I saw on this night. Shannon Roche, Gisel Bahena, Abigail Garcia, Lily Harris and Omar Cardenas proudly displayed their works of art and told me how Blog 9important the program was to them. Gisel plans on working in the culinary arts and Omar was happy to have a place to go that would keep him “off the streets.” Abigail commented on the fun she had and how much she loved learning how to Blog 10 - Zac Stemer and Jordan Stemercook. This was sheer genius by the event organizers to add these kids so they could highlight this worthy organization! Of the 50 world-renowned chefs invited to this event, After School Matters was the only teen initiative asked to participate. The event was emceed for the second year by Blog 11 - Elena Samokhina and magical friend“Windy City Live” hosts Valerie Warner and Ryan Chiaverini. When I interviewed them for Watch312.com, they were so excited about expanding to the weekend, with a Sunday edition coming soon. Ryan jokingly said, “You will be sick of us soon like my parents.” They are too cute for words, as we Blog 12 - Susan and John Collettiall know! Corri McFadden, glam e-Drop Off founder and star of VH1’s “House of Consignment,” and Donald Storino, principal and co-founder of the government affairs firm Fidelity Consulting Group, served as co-chairs. This Blog 13 - DJ Rock Cityevent benefitted Chicago Gateway Green, which was founded by Donald DePorter in 1986. His son, Grant DePorter, President of Harry Caray’s Restaurant Group and Chairman of Gateway Green, carries on his father’s tradition in grand style. “As Gateway Green’s Blog 14signature fundraising event, the Green Tie Ball not only raises our mission but also serves as the catalyst for our ongoing beautification programs, including the Expressway Partnership, for which proceeds from this year’s gala will be directed.” The night also Blog 15included top notch dance music from deejays Justin Jacobson (founder and impresario of Platinum Events), Rock City and former Fall Out Boy bassist and half of the Black Cards duo, Pete Wentz. He showed up on the green carpet around 9:45 p.m. with gorgeous arm candy, Meagan Camper. My friend and celebrity stylist Eric Himel styled them both to perfection saying, “For

When I asked him how he liked his outfit, he said, “I feel a little Farrakhan-ish but that’s okay, I'm a fan.” He was dancing and tweeting pics of the crowd as he deejayed. So cute! Meagan was in a sleek black dress from Top Shop with green Alexis Bittar earrings. Such a stylish pair! I loved Eric’s Blog 18outfit, too, that featured a green skull necklace on a leather cord from Beatnik's, a great store in Lakeview. Entertainment included live performances from Chicago cover bands Dr. Bombay Blog 19 - Brenda Arelano and Lisa Apratiand South of 80. Co-host Ryan Chiaverini thrilled the crowd when he got onstage to sing his now signature song, “Sweet Home Alabama.” The Rivers Casino tent featured craps, blackjack and roulette. There was also a Red Moon bubble-blowing, mobile DJ, Blog 20 - Charitable gambling courtesy of Rivers Casinoan Office Max photo booth filled with “Alice in Wonderland” props and “Hawk Man,” who hovered over the crowd on a 20-foot crane flapping his massive, feathered wings (also from Red Moon). Partygoers happily fell right down the Blog 21 - “Hawk Man” from Red Moon Theater Companyrabbit hole at this party! Faux “funkin” pumpkins will be decorated by local “celebrities” to be auctioned off.  I must say she corralled me for this funkin decorating and I tried but had to relinquish my duties to my dear friend (and crafty Blog 3 - Tissy Eggleston, my “Funkin” carving savior!genius), Tissy Eggleston. So, even though I will have a pumpkin entered, just know it was a collaborative effort! LOL! There will also be an open bar, food stations, a live band with guests encouraged to wear costumes. More than $1.1 million was raised from this year’s event with proceeds benefitting under-funded women’s health programs at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Blog 1 - Playmates Shelby Chesnes, Beth Williams, Amelia Talon and Kimberly SpicerGlamourcon 53 featured Playboy Playmates (past and present), Playboy Cyber girls and Special Edition models plus pin-ups and it was great seeing some of my fellow Playmates like Janis Schmitt, who was also Blog 2 - Jessa Hinton (Miss July 2011)a Bunny with me at the St. Louis Playboy Club. Patti McGuire, Janis and I were all friends at this wonderful club back in the ‘70s and I’m happy to say we all remain close today. Such is the story for most Playmates I know – their friendships are lasting due to shared Blog 3 - Patrice Hollis (Miss Sept. 2007)experiences and I saw lots of new Playmates making friends-for-life at this weekend affair founded by Bob Schultz. Until I interviewed Bob, I never really knew how Glamourcon, in this format, began. He recounted that for years the event didn’t include Blog 4 - Traci Denee and Ashley Ilenfeld (Playboy Cyber girls)Playboy Playmates until Hef walked in one day and “his whole world changed.” Hef walked around the show and commented, “You need Playmates!” and Bob said, “Do you know anyone who could help me with this?” and the rest, as they say, is history. The show now centers around Playmates who are well represented from every era including the early ‘50s, Blog 5 - Playmates Kerry Kendall (9-90) and Ava Fabian (8-86)when Playboy first began, to this year’s latest double centerfold Playmates, Beth Williams (8/12) and Shelby Chesnes (7/12), who both busily took photos and signed autographs for the fans. For the first time ever, the opportunity to “Shoot a Blog 6 - Tracy Vaccaro (Miss October 1983)Centerfold” was presented by two legends of Playboy, Jeff Cohen (former Special Editions Editor) and Gary Cole (former longtime photo director), where they offered amateur photogs the chance to shoot Playmates in lingerie. This event also included a party bus downtown to The Joynt on Blog 7 - SekaSaturday night where guests could mix and mingle at this local nightclub with the Playmates. It was a great idea which gave many fans the opportunity to remove a “bucket list wish item” according to Jeff. I love this event, not only because it gives me a chance to see my “sorority sisters” but also Blog 8 - Lorraine Michaels (Miss January 1981)because it has the best fans! They are all very knowledgeable and interested in Playboy and its history plus, sometimes, they bring you memorabilia that you never knew existed: Last year, a fan brought a foreign Playboy double cover of mine that I never knew was even published! This year, I received flowers…it’s a fun event for all Blog 9 - With Jeff Cohen (former Playboy Special Editions Editor)involved and I can’t wait till the next Glamourcon in Long Beach on November 10th and 11th. Blog 1 - President-CEO John McCarter with Museum Trustee Dave TolmieThe Field Associates of the Field Museum hosted their annual Summer Soiree, co-chaired by Melissa Genova and Katie Sassaman, on the Stanley Field Hall Balcony July 19th. Prospective Field Associates were invited to join active members for this fun evening co-hosted by the Blog 2 - Glenn Kolososki, Nicholas Killion, Jim Cerami, Jennifer NolanField Museum President’s Leadership Council. More than 100 guests enjoyed not only cocktails and hors d’oeuvres but the opportunity to learn from the museum’s Department of Environment, Culture and Conservation how birds use their bills and adapt to their food sources plus lots of other interesting factoids. Guests also got a chance to tour the museum’s newest Blog 4 - Kelsey Phillips, Andrew Critchell and Kelsey Tolmiepermanent exhibit, “Restoring Earth.” This total immersion experience allowed visitors to see conservation efforts from Chicago to South America, to Pacific coral reefs and points in between through the use of huge, Blog 3 - Katie Sassaman (co-chair) with Jessie Zhangbreathtaking visuals. (If you haven’t seen this exhibit, it is a must-see!) Partygoers also dressed up in various types of field gear, such as fire suits (used in prairie burns) and hip waders, vests and binoculars (used in wetland surveys) to snap fun pics in the photo booth. Produced by Vasta & Associates, this year's 6th Annual Taylor Street Festa Italiana had Blog 2 - Tommy Lasorda holds court at Festa Italianasomething for everyone, attracted more than 50,000 during its four day run and was bigger by five blocks. The multiple stages showcased talents that included Moreno Fruzzetti, Blog 3 - Mark Roscoe designTony Spavone, Dominic Mantuano, Aaron Caruso and Packy Angelo Ciaravino. The line-up of pop and rock entertainment included "Chicago's Entertainer" Ron Hawking, Hair Bangers Ball, The Legendary Drifters, Mike & Joe, Liquid Soul, Acoustic Generation, Your Villain My Hero, This Must Be Blog 4 - Watch312 Host Jess Altieri with designer Mark RoscoeThe Band, Jaw Potato, Peter Guerin, John Vincent, Ten Foot Tail, Breakfast Club and Hot Sauce Committee. A fabulous fashion show presented by ZZAZZ Productions' Tracey DiBuono featured all local designers and included exquisite collections from Kate Boggiano, Cettina, Mark Roscoe Design, Loreta Corsetti, Couture Millinery, Blog 5 - Event producer Lou VastaPaul Sisti Creations, Mona Lisa Boutique and Silver Elements, a jewelry line from accessory designer Marla Lenza Zegart and The Lovehammers' Marty Casey. This was a fabulous Blog 7 - Grape stomping contest with models!production, as only ZZAZZ can do, and had the large crowd cheering with every model run. "I was thrilled to see Festa Italiana Chicago salute Italian food, singers, family and fashion done in a professional production with a salute to Chicago's talented Italian Americans in the fashion industry. From Milan to Taylor Street, they walked Blog 6 - Giancarlo Turano II and friend at Festa 2012in great style," said DiBuono. Fun activities included a grape stomping competition, a meatball eating contest (hosted by presenting sponsors Turano Baking Company and Fontanini) and a bocce ball tournament. Giancarlo Turano II Blog 8presided over the meatball eating contest with a female participant downing the most sandwiches (eight!) in just two minutes! The food stands were out-of-this-world with pizza, pasta, pork chop Blog 9 - Models on top of Little Italy!sandwiches, Italian-style corn on the cob (parmesan cheese and butter!), steamed clams, gelato,  meatball sandwiches, Italian beef and sausage sandwiches, Italian ice, grilled calamari and all of the wine and beer you could drink! There were also stands carrying toys for the kids, jewelry, handmade Blog 10 - Your Villain My Heroclothing and handbags among many other offerings. A portion of the proceeds benefitted the University Village Association, a non-profit Blog 12 - A record crowd at Festa Italianadedicated to improving the economic and residential development of the neighborhood. Last year, beloved designer Barbara Bates filled the room for her 25th anniversary in business at her annual Barbara Bates Foundation Fashion Show and this year will be no different with reservations already flying out the door! After being diagnosed Barbara Bateswith breast cancer herself, Barbara has extended her philanthropic reach to support the cause of breast cancer research and treatment so this year, her show will feature her gorgeous designs on models who are also breast cancer survivors. Blog 1 - Rachel Schwanz and fiancé Chef James David De MarteThere she was, standing at the sink with chicken juice all over her fingers and in a crappy mood, when he came back from Costco and announced he’d bought a gift for himself – a sub-woofer for their home theater system. She thought, “Just GREAT!” and continued to decimate the chicken…until he said, “I got a gift for you, too.” As Rachel Schwanz turned around, she saw her boyfriend of two years, Chef James David De Marte, go down on one knee offering her a tiny box. As she pulled Blog 2 - Rachel’s gorgeous ring using her grandmother’s stoneher hands OUT of the chicken, she asked, “You’re doing this now?!” He did indeed propose and squeezed the ring onto her salmonella-covered finger amid many tears of joy. As Rachel said, “It’s classic that a chef proposed to me in the kitchen, of course!” I adore both of these successful, dedicated and beloved people and wish them a lifetime of happiness! They will have a small wedding in Playa del Carmen, Mexico, on April 20, 2013…Mrs. Rachel De Marte sounds really, really good, don’t you think? Congrats to you two lovebirds!

ARETHA FRANKLIN WOWS N’DIGO GALA CROWD

Blog 1I knew she was called the “Queen of Soul” and I certainly loved her music but it wasn’t until I attended the 17th annual N’Digo Gala that I realized WHY she IS the Queen! This event was something special. First of all, I adore N’Digo Magazine Blog 2 - The One and Onlypublisher/founder Hermene Hartman. She is a one woman dynamo who loves her community and is the pure definition of giving back with her N’Digo Foundation, which she founded in 1995. This foundation awards merit-based college Blog 3 - 2012 N’Digo Foundation scholarship recipientsscholarships to students from Chicago and the suburbs and, to date, has awarded 286. Hermene’s friends and fans are legion and her Gala always includes top notch entertainment plus fun-loving, well-dressed attendees. In years past, performers including Blog 4 - KC and Cheryl Pearson-McNeil with Reverend Jesse JacksonBabyface, Ray Charles (with a full orchestra), Jerry Butler and Nancy Wilson, Gladys Knight, Natalie Cole, George Benson, Ledisi and Seal have all appeared at this event. More than 1,500 guests turned out to celebrate the 50th anniversary of soul music as well as to support the foundation at this black-tie gala themed “Legends de Soul.” The dynamic and inspiring Blog 5 - The Impressionsprogram began with hosts Hermene and NBC’s Art Norman welcoming the crowd. Hermene introduced a video showcasing past scholarship recipients and what they’re doing now, saying, “These are the youths who’ve done it their way and are now living their Blog 6 - Quinton de’ Alexander with his designs and modelsdreams.” It was a wonderful confirmation of the good that this organization does. The 2012 winners were introduced onstage as Pastor Charles Jenkins and the choir of Fellowship Chicago Baptist Church performed their hit song, Blog 7 - Michelle Boone proclaims Aretha Day in Chicago“Awesome.” Music legends The Impressions took the stage as the concert began at 7 p.m. wowing the audiences with their infectious energy as well as their classic songs that Blog 8 - Aretha performs tribute to Whitneyincluded “Gypsy Woman” and “Super Fly,” which was an homage to the late great Curtis Mayfield. Comedian Jonathan Slocumb – a favorite of Ms. Franklin for his clean-cut style – had the crowd in stitches especially during his impersonation of Reverend Jesse Jackson who happened to be coming down the aisle at the same time. Arie Blog 9 - Hermene does some steppin’ to celebrate the night!Crown Theater was filled to capacity when the Queen took the stage and announced, “Hello Chicago, here I am!” Before her performance, Michelle Boone, the Mayor’s Cultural Commissioner, proclaimed June 30th to be Aretha Franklin Day in Chicago – it’s good to be Queen! She performed Blog 10 - Lindsay Rafaykotirelessly for at least two straight hours, never leaving the stage. (The only concession was removing her shoes.) She looked great in a white gown embroidered with large pink/red flowers and her voice rocked the rafters as she sang hits such as “Your Love Keeps Lifting Me Higher” and “Skylark.” She introduced “Skylark” after telling of being turned away from “The Ed Sullivan Show” at age 17 when they told her they had Blog 11 - The dramatic Terrace at McCormick Placeoverbooked. She said, “This is the song I was going to sing.” She played the piano during a moving tribute to Whitney Houston as photos were shown overhead. “She was gracious, she was real and my Christian sister,” said Franklin of Houston. As the show continued, photos Blog 12 - The Wobble!were also shown of Aretha with greats such as Stevie Wonder, Clive Davis, Don Cornelius, Smokey Robinson and Ray Charles among many others. I couldn’t believe the energy this 70-year-old woman had! It was an incredible history Blog 13 - With comedian Jonathan Slocumbmaking moment as she finished her performance with “R-E-S-P-E-C-T” to standing ovations…oh what a night! Ms. Franklin has won 18 Grammys and is the first female to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. I couldn’t believe she would allow anyone into her dressing room after this tiring performance (let alone me!) Blog 14 - The Impressions at the After-Party on the Terracebut she did and I will never forget it. My cameraman and photog were the only media allowed in her dressing room and I will be forever grateful to Hermene for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity…check out my Watch312.com video below! But the party didn’t stop there, as guests moved onto the terrace for more refreshments, small bites and dancing – I even learned how to do the Wobble!! Blog 1 - Ryan and Val cut the Eli’s cheesecake!It’s one of my favorite shows and I’m so glad they're doing SO well! “Windy City Live” hosted its one-year anniversary on June 11th at Epic on Hubbard. I was expecting this by-invite-only party to be jam packed but it was the PERFECT number of people – not too Blog 2 - Marlaine Selip, John Idler (new Prez and GM Ch. 7) and Cindy Patrassomany and not too few. Executive Producer Marlaine Selip explained, “We invited all of the people who’ve made this night possible, our family, our producers, our advertisers and our friends.” It was a joyous affair and the whole place was reserved for this party Blog 3 - Ryan and Ernie Banks toast!including their lovely rooftop bar area where everyone seemed to congregate on this perfect summer evening. A giant cake, courtesy of Eli’s Cheesecake, was the first thing guests saw as they entered the venue. Along with Marlaine, “WCL” hosts Blog 4Val Warner and Ryan Chiaverini welcomed the crowd and thanked their many contributors. New General Manager John Idler was in the crowd and laughed as Ryan joked about having his 10-year contract drawn up and ready for him Blog 5 - Emerald-Jane Hunter and Ji Suk Yito sign. It was a loving group of supporters who were all there to cheer this great show on. Blog 1 - Kelsey Grammer cuts the cake!Maureen and Marc Schulman have been very busy this week! Besides the "WCL" party, they also appeared at the opening of Taste of Chicago! Kelsey Grammer (Chicago Mayor Tom Kane on Starz original hit series “Boss”) performed some "mayoral" duties when he opened Taste by cutting a 1,000-pound Eli's Blog 2Cheesecake in celebration of Chicago's 175th birthday and the 32nd birthday of Taste of Chicago AND Eli's Cheesecake. Restaurateur Eli Schulman debuted the cheesecake at the first Taste of Chicago in 1980. Grammer, along with the leads from “Rock of Ages,” led the crowd in "Happy Birthday." Blog 1 - Lucky in love—Hedy and Mort make it official!Love was in the air for a popular and much-loved couple who “have been living in sin for the last 43 years," according to Hedy. Hedy Ratner, founder and co-president of the Women’s Business Development Center, and Blog 2 - Hedy in FINE form on her big day!Mort Kaplan, of Morton H. Kaplan and Associates, finally tied the knot after fooling friends and family with a few false starts (some would call them pranks) for the last few years. Last year’s party celebrated Hedy’s birthday with a fake wedding but this time, the nuptials were for real. Sun-Times columnist Neil Steinberg wrote a delightful column on this remarkable and loving couple and in his Blog 3 - Hedy and Mort dance for joy!interview, he asked them what had changed. “A couple of things,” said Mort. “I had a stroke in January and something happened in that period that I did not like. She wanted to get a prescription filled, and one doctor said, ‘Who are you? You’re the girlfriend.’ And I said, ‘She’s not the girlfriend!’ She was the quarterback of my recovery.” They were married on July 1st at Orchestra Hall. And they will CONTINUE TO live happily ever after!  🙂

Blog 1 - Highland Park Theater marquee with proposalSpeaking of love, beautiful chanteuse Laurie Marchese is ENGAGED to longtime love, Bill Russ. Laurie lives in LA now but is originally from Oak Lawn and Bill, who also lives in LA, is from Aurora. Their love story could be a Hollywood movie: They met 30 years ago on the set of “Risky Business,” where Bill was an assistant to the producer and a stand-in for Tom Cruise, and Blog 2 - Laurie and Bill at SpagoLaurie was an extra in a crowd scene at the Highland Park Movie Theater. They had a whirlwind teenage romance and then parted ways as their careers moved in different directions. Fast forward to 2012 after fatefully reuniting, Bill arranged a surprise marriage proposal at the same theater where they met all those years ago and, of course, Laurie said YESSSSSSSSS!!!! Cupid’s arrows have hit their marks AGAIN!!  Congrats Laurie and Bill!

Blog 1 - Waiting for Ben Folds FiveThe 28th annual World’s Largest Block Party for Old St. Pat’s was another blowout event with almost 18,000 people attending this two-day event in the parking lot across from the Church. This party is known for creating marriage matches and has connected dozens of attendees throughout the years. I was so thrilled to be a guest bartender along with Natalie Martinez, Dean Richards, Ravi Baichwal, Anthony Ponce, Stefan Holt, Blog 2 - Serving beer with WCIU’s Aly BocklerMarcus Riley, Borris Powell, Sherren Leigh, Dori Wilson, Jason Knowles, Aly Bockler and Andrea Metcalf. Proceeds support the church and the Center for Social Concerns on the Old St. Pat’s campus, which houses the following outreach programs: Horizons for Youth, Career Transitions Center of Chicago and the Global Alliance for Africa. Blog 1 - The David Rothstein Orchestra has the crowd on their feet!Congrats to David Rothstein and his dynamic and talented music company on their 12-year anniversary! This versatile 11-piece orchestra has won numerous awards, performed for celebrities and Fortune 500 companies, and is regularly flown cross country for special events. And besides Blog 2 - David Rothstein and Goldiebeing such a talent, he has a big philanthropic heart, too! His “Share the Love” program is nothing short of genius. After weddings, instead of throwing away floral arrangements or begging guests to take them home, David delivers them to the nearest nursing home or women’s and children’s shelters. He has also made numerous charitable contributions of his musical talent. And on top of it all, this cute guy is single, too! (Ladies are you listening?) Blog 1 - Fun friends in MichiganI am so happy Chuck and I got a chance to take a weekend getaway trip to Michigan – we were thrilled to spend time with good friends in fabulous spots! The lake was like glass and I even tried kayaking for the first time with friends Paul Iacono, Ken Norgan and Blog 2 - My favorite new home décor store in Union Pier!Pepe Conforme. We also had a delicious dinner at fabulous caterer George Jewell’s Burscott Park estate and met uber-talented interior designer, Jim Dennen. CAMPFIRE BALL SPURS MEMORIES OF CHILDHOOD FOR SUPPORTERS AND HOPE FOR KIDS WITH CANCER

The Memorial Day weekend came and went before I even knew it. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that it was also my birthday, but I do know I wish it would’ve lasted longer. I want to thank everyone who sent birthday wishes. I feel so lucky to have such wonderful friends – you know who you are!

Blog 1And now, what’s been happening around town? Well, first off, I want to give a shout-out to one of the coolest charity events around, The Campfire Ball. I had never heard of this until I received the press Blog 2 - Creative Co-chairsrelease (and believe me, if I don’t respond to some of your emails, it’s because my inbox is filled with these but I’m not complaining!) and what attracted me to this fundraiser was its description. How many adults wouldn’t like to Blog 3 - Maggie Conlonrelive a part of their childhood, especially the part where you’re camping, eating s’mores over a fire and drinking spiked bug juice!? I was intrigued and did a little further research and after I found out what this event benefitted, I was completely and totally Blog 4 - Kori Chambers guest bartendedhooked. The Campfire Ball supports Children’s Oncology Services and through its One Step Programs, helps send kids with cancer to camp. Their philosophy is “a diagnosis of cancer should not prevent a child from experiencing the Blog 5simple joys of childhood.” Hundreds celebrated this night at Venue One with décor reminiscent of northern Wisconsin. Even the signs pointing to the “lake” and the “cabins” were scribbled on wood. Blog 6And the food! Oh my! Cork Catering served gourmet versions of grilled cheese sandwiches and hot dogs. Sprinkles served mini s’more cupcakes and Theory offered smoked pork sandwiches. The honey, bacon and jalapeno popcorn from Bridgehouse Tavern was out of this world!  Co-chair Jordan (Jordi) Izsak had this to say: “Every year I am more and more impressed with the showing of support Campfire Ball garners. Our guests and donors deserve a round of applause for making such a huge impact on the One Step At A Time programs. I was beside Blog 8myself Saturday night to see a packed house and know that every person there was helping us reach our goal of raising $100,000 and sending 100 kids to camp!” The summer camp hosts nearly 300 children but the beautiful thing about Blog 9Children’s Oncology Services is that they help offset the financial burden of the cost of camp for families that need it. Lynn Rubin, a counselor and cancer survivor describes her experience this way, “I
ve been involved with One Step Blog 10Camp for six years. I’m a camp counselor, a program leader and a cancer survivor. One Step Camp holds a very special place in my heart. It’s a magical place where kids with cancer can just be kids. They can be themselves without judgment and just Blog 11 - The Bachelorette’s Ed Swiderski (L) and cute friendsenjoy life without thinking about being sick. I volunteer at camp to help these kids have the best summer of their lives, but actually, they have helped me so much more. They have taught me about life, strength and happiness. I Blog 12 - Stephanie Krol (R) and friendswill always be a volunteer at One Step Camp. I’m a lifer. Peace. Love. Camp.” During the evening DJ Matt Roan kept the dance floor filled and the wildly popular Digital Photobooth by MVS Studio projected cute guests’ photos on the walls Blog 13throughout the night. Local media celebrities guest bartended and included NBC 5’s Lauren Jiggetts, former Chicago Bear and sports personality Jerry Azumah, FOX’s Kori Chambers, Time Out Chicago’s Marissa Conrad, Jason Goff from Blog 14The SCORE/CBS radio and Ed Swiderski, winner from “The Bachelorette” Season 5. Nine-year-old Maggie Conlon, whose cancer has been in remission for nearly eight years, said, “I loved camp so much that my counselors called my parents Blog 15to ask if I could stay an extra week.” She is already counting down to her next visit. The after party continued at RPM Italian (RJ and Jerrod Melman and Giuliana and Bill Rancic’s new restaurant). And the parting gift for guests? Why, a box of Campfire matches, of course! Blog 1 - Event Hosts Bill Kurtis, Donna LaPietra, Deann and Rick BaylessThe 30th anniversary celebration for the Chicago Academy of the Arts featured top chefs and student performances at the Harris Theater on May 10th and attracted more than 530 guests. The night began with a video Blog 2 - Stephen Flach (co-chair), Justin Tranter, Chris Fryson (co-chair)montage of students, past and present, speaking about the CAA and what it meant to them. Emcee Bill Kurtis introduced Head of School Pamela Jordan, who had this to say: “At CAA, we want our students ready for collaborative opportunities Blog 3 - CAA Studentsthat the 21st century will offer. Our plans include an upgraded recording studio, a refurbished science lab, incorporating SKYPE into classrooms and building a state-of-the-art creative lab. We now have a global program, a student Blog 4 - Art and Jen Wirtzcomposed full length opera performed by professional artists, a student directed and produced 90 minute film and the CAA Repertory Dance Company.” Student/alumni performances included musical theater soloist Eleri Ward, soprano Jessica Oliver, and classical pianist Blog 5 - Pamela Jordan (Head of School) and husband Christopher ScottSu Jin Kang. The performances opened and closed with the CAA Repertory Dance Company. Rock band Semi Precious Weapons, featuring front man Justin Tranter, performed a high-energy number that had the crowd on its feet. This group opened for Lady Blog 6 - Randy Duncan and Natalie Rast (CAA faculty)Gaga during her 2009-2011 Monster Ball Tour but Tranter said, “I’ve told more stories about the CAA than Lady Gaga!” Following the performances, guests moved to the Millennium Park Rooftop Terrace where Blog 7 - CAA students Haley Gehrkeand and Isabella FarrellChef Rick Bayless (an event host with wife Deann, Donna LaPietra and Bill Kurtis) had assembled a culinary team who had all been featured on Bravo’s “Top Chef.” It included chefs Sarah Grueneberg, Tony Mantuano, Stephanie Izard, Chris Jones, Richie Farina, Dale Levitski, Amanda Rockman, Heather Terhune and Blog 8 - Rick Bayless introduces the chefsTakashi Yagihashi. Bayless quipped, “You will not see a group of this caliber together in one place, for one night, anywhere else in Chicago!” Stephen Flach and Chris Fryson were the event co-chairs and Barbara Levy Kipper was the civic chair. The event raised more than $460,000 for the organization. Founded by Essie Kupcinet in 1981, The CAA was designated a National School of Distinction and remains the only independent arts high school in Illinois. This year marks the CAA’s 30th anniversary. Development Board members and “Frankie’s on the Park,” a Lincoln Park children’s Blog 2 - On the catwalk!boutique, teamed up to host the second annual Girls Spring Fashion Show & Tea at the Women’s Athletic Club. "Windy City Live" stylist Eric Himel emceed the show with proceeds from the event supporting medical research and advances in patient care at Comer Children’s Hospital. Blog 1 - Prez-CEO Deb Lahey and Peggy NotebaertChicago’s civic and corporate leaders filled the tent for the 14th annual Butterfly Ball benefitting the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Themed “Tour de Nature,” this event celebrated the museum’s popular new exhibition “Bikes! The Green Revolution” and embodied its Blog 2 - Judy Istock, Susan Whiting and Cate Waddellcommitment to be the urban gateway to nature and science. This year’s co-chairs were Rita and John Canning (who also recently co-chaired the Big Shoulders Fund benefit) along with Susan Whiting. Vendors for the ball were chosen for their creative and vibrant commitment to being environmentally responsible with the flowers dotting the event being repurposed in the Woodward Blog 3 - Diana and Steve Ferrara (Museum Board President)Wickham Butterfly Garden. The stunning décor by Event Creative included butterfly images projected throughout the tent and painted Blog 4 - Rita and John Canning (co-chairs)bicycles hanging from every light pole. ABC 7’s Linda Yu served as the charming emcee, even wearing a butterfly pin to prove her commitment. Senior Curator of Urban Ecology Steve Sullivan hosted a Q & A and showcased specimens from the museum’s collection that included a prairie chicken. Sullivan said, “There is an interesting and sad history here with the prairie chicken being very prevalent 100 years ago and now down to a few dozen in Illinois.” Calihan Catering prepared a seasonal menu for Blog 5 - Having fun with the Auxiliary Boardthe black tie crowd with guests meandering throughout the museum following dinner. The Judy Blog 8 - Susan Whiting (co-chair) and Toni PreckwinkleIstock Butterfly Haven was my favorite. The fabulous Lynne Jordan & the Shivers kept the dance floor filled. Besides co-chairs Rita and John Canning and Susan Whiting, other notables seen at the gala included Toni Preckwinkle, Deborah Blog 6 - Anna Pramaggiore and son Jack HarringtonLahey, Gery Chico, Vi and Vince Daley, Sharon Walton and John Burns, Jacky and Michael Ferro (who is remaking the Sun-Times), Diana and Steve Ferrara, Blog 7 - Marc Miller, Sharon Pearson-McNeil and Chris HorsmanFrancee and Vern Broders, Cheryl Pearson McNeil, Libby Prakel, Steve Connell, Marc Miller, Chris Horsman and Anne Pramaggiore (with her darling son). Rashied Davis and wifeRashied Davis, former wide receiver for the Chicago Bears, had some fabulous moves on the field but he’s proving he’s got what it takes in the world of philanthropy, too! Rashied Davis Charities is hosting its annual charity cocktail event to support and promote literacy among children. “Cocktails for Brighter Tomorrows” will take place June 5th, from 6 to 9 p.m. at Rockit Bar & Grill (22 W. Hubbard St.) with WLS ABC 7 sports reporter/anchor Rafer Weigel emceeing. Several of Davis’ former Rashied's invite phototeammates will be on hand to lend support including Lance Briggs, Brian Urlacher (maybe he’ll bring Jenny!), Earl Bennet and Jerry Azumah. The proceeds raised at this event will benefit the Saturday Place Program, a supplemental educational program for third and fourth grade CPS students who are underperforming. Tickets start at $75. RVA SaveTheDateOn Wednesday, June 13th, Rape Victims Advocates (RVA) will honor those individuals who have given hope to sexual assault survivors at the 8th Visionary Awards themed Legacy of Hope. This high-energy gala at Salvage One, located at 1840 W. Hubbard, will pay RVA Visionary Awards E-viteposthumous tribute to RVA’s founder, Dr. Natalie Stephens. Tom and Mary Seeberg will be honored with the Dr. Natalie Stephens Visionary Award along with RVA volunteers, past and present. (Seeberg’s daughter Elizabeth, aka “Lizzy,” tragically committed suicide after a sexual assault and the Seebergs have been adamant in their pursuit of truth, justice and accountability on behalf of their daughter.) The RVA has been doing important work in the city for 38 years with 100 volunteer advocates on call 24/7 for 14 Chicagoland hospitals. Val Warner of "Windy City Live" will emcee. Attila GyulaiCongratulations are in order for the handsome former VP of Operations for the Elysian, Attila Gyulai (pronounced like the month July): He and Executive Chef Thai Dang (formerly the chef at Chef Thai Dangthe Elysian’s Ria) are teaming up to open a new restaurant this summer in the West Loop, at 564 W. Randolph, called Embeya. The cuisine will be “progressive Asian.” We wish them luck and I can’t wait to become a regular!

Hugh-Hefner-and-Crystal-HarrisIn the “I can’t believe it” file, runaway bride Crystal Harris – aka the girl who dumped Hef at the altar – is moving back in with him at the Mansion. He tweeted on May 31st, “Getting back together with Crystal Harris shouldn't be a big surprise, since I have a history of remaining close to former girlfriends.” And recently, on June 2nd, he tweeted, “It's Mary O'Conner that brought Crystal Harris back. Crystal was miserable & said so. Mary told Crystal to write & tell me, which she did.” So there you have it. No comment.

Manolis AlpogianisCongratulations to handsome restaurateur Manolis Alpogianis on his newest venture at Navy Pier! City Porch, a chic yet comfortable dining spot, is just what the place needs! Enough of the burger joints – finally something sleek with an extensive and delectable menu to match! Plus, I loved the Adirondack chairs out front for viewing the fireworks. This place is sure to be a hit on the dining scene and will even feature guest celeb chefs each month to add their specialties to Watch 312 logothe menu! Congrats, Manolis!

Blog 1 - Grammer and Mahoney, reunited!Beyond the International Film Festival and now in its 48th year, the Hugo Television Awards is an international television competition that culminated in a grand gala at the Radisson Blu Aqua recently honoring the best television commercials and Blog 2 - Kayte and Kelsey Grammer and Rotimi Akinoshoproductions from nine countries around the world. Co-hosted by Cinema/Chicago and the IFF, the highlight of the night was the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to actor Kelsey Grammer. Best known for his award-winning role as Blog 3 - Emcees Val Warner and Ryan ChiaveriniDr. Frasier Crane, among countless other roles, the evening’s tribute to actor/producer/director Grammer included video highlights and the award presentation by his longtime "Frasier" co-star, John Mahoney. Earlier in the year, Grammer received the Blog 4 - Hugo founder Michael KutzaGolden Globe for Best Actor in the Chicago-based drama series “Boss” as Mayor Tom Kane. As Dr. Frasier Crane, he played the celebrated character in three television series ("Wings," "Cheers," and "Frasier") for more than 20 years. He’s won four Blog 5 - Top prize winners, OPTIMUSEmmy nominations, eight Golden Globe nominations and 16 SAG nominations and he is the first actor in TV history to receive multiple Emmy nods for performing the same role on three series! (Not surprising, since he received his training at the prestigious Juilliard School Blog 6 - Rich Varnes, Cynthia King and Dennis Minkelof the Performing Arts.) Michael Kutza, founder and artistic director of Cinema/Chicago and the Chicago IFF, said, “For decades Kelsey Grammer has entertained us — across genres and media he has proven himself to be a remarkable talent. From the Blog 7 - Alex Kopecky, Vivian Teng, Rebecca Fons and Michael Kutzastage to the screen, from behind the camera to our television, Grammer has provided audiences with some of our most beloved, iconic characters. We are thrilled to honor him for his television work at the Hugos.” Judging from the banks of media at the Blog 8event, everyone agreed! We could barely squeeze our Watch312.com cameras onto the red carpet but we managed to get some great interviews with Mahoney, Grammer and Grammer’s “Boss” co-star Rotimi Akinosho. Kelsey was accompanied by his beautiful wife, Kayte (whose name he had tattooed on his abdomen that day to much fanfare), and who is Blog 9expecting twins. She couldn’t have been more gracious and when he was asked what his inspiration was replied, “She is.” They never stopped holding hands and he kissed her at every opportunity. It was so sweet. Following the red carpet, guests were ushered into the ballroom after enjoying a cocktail reception. Blog 10 - John Mahoney, Bob Mills and Merritt PavichevichDarling co-hosts Val Warner and Ryan Chiaverini (of “Windy City Live”) welcomed the crowd of 400 and introduced event founder, Michael Kutza, who said, “It was funny thinking back to 1965 when Mr. Leo Burnett himself helped me Blog 12 - Boss star Rotimi Akinosho and Michael Kutzastart the TV Festival and to see so many awards going to some fantastic Leo Burnett spots tonight!” Leo Burnett had the most wins of the evening (24), winning Silver Hugos for “Active Duty” (a heartwarming Hallmark commercial) and “Mayhem” Blog 12(a series of Allstate commercials featuring actor Dean Winters). Other top winners included a Gold Hugo for the documentary series, “Have You Heard from Johannesburg” (about anti-apartheid in South Africa) directed by Connie Field. Director Magdalena Lazarkiewicz (“The Deep Blog 13End”) traveled all the way from Poland to receive her Gold Hugo in the Dramatic Series category. David Hyde Pierce also made a surprise video appearance telling Grammer, “I’m so frustrated that you’re there tonight being honored and I can’t stop them!” (He went on to say that he did hope Blog 14 - Tribune and Watch312.com media teamsGrammer ran for office.) Production company powerhouse Optimus won the Commitment to Excellence Award while the Audience Choice award went to Burrell Communications for “A Frosty Affair,” a McDonald’s Nc1commercial about meeting someone special over a McFrappe. The after-party continued in the Felini Bar with everyone from Hugo winners to John Mahoney Nc2taking turns in the photo booth. Event producer Alex Kopecky did a great job putting the whole show together and Carol Fox and Associates’ Carly Leviton and Nick Harkin did an outstanding job as well. For over a century, the Place Vendome location has been at the forefront with a signature style and a mastery of the craft of fine jewelry inspired by the longstanding Blog 3 - Van Cleef’s Kristina Buckley surrounded by models Blog 4 - A table fit for royalty!themes of the House, nature, couture and the arts. I was so proud that Watch312 was the exclusive media outlet for this event. As high-profile guests mixed and mingled in the exquisite jewel box boutique, it was the jewelry that was the star of the night. After cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the boutique, guests were led to the Palm Court which had been transformed by Tom Kehoe into a Parisian salon complete with languid models draped over ivory chairs in chic gowns created Blog 8 - Molly Melman, Suzy and Al Friedman, Sherren Leigh and Dr. Julius Fewby French designer Gaspard Yurkievich. In earlier times, women’s fashions were designed to match their jewelry as was the case on this night. Factor models floated around the room showcasing millions of dollars’ worth of exquisite gems to appreciative guests Blog 9 - Heather Farley and Toni Canadaas they sipped champagne in this flower-filled room to the sounds of a string quartet. It was truly surreal. And as if this weren’t enough, we were then ushered into the Gold Coast Room for the main event. Sharp intakes of breath emanated from every guest upon seeing this already magnificent room transformed as if for Queen Blog 10 - Sonya Jackson, Nicolas Bos and Melissa BabcockElizabeth’s Diamond Jubilee dinner! I’ve never seen anything like it. A long, single table was brimming with flowers, candles, crystal and silver while the sparkling chandeliers above had been dimmed and spotlighted with pale colored lights. The room literally glowed…I heard several Blog 12 - Mike and Kathleen Hensonpeople mumbling that “had they known this event would be like this, they would’ve dressed better!” And the menu seemed to be something that would be served at Buckingham Palace, too, beginning with quenelles of Lake Erie Pike, diver scallops, morel mushrooms and Beluga caviar. Main Blog 11 - Rick and Toni Canadacourse: Kobe Filet and foie gras, local farmed asparagus, haricot verts, roasted shallot pommes Dauphines with Bordeaux reduction. Dessert included a trio of miniature desserts, charlotte russe, hand churned salted caramel ice cream and passion fruit crème brulee. (And the sweetest part, pun intended, the plates all carried this message: “To Chicago, Love Paris.”) Wines served featured Pascal Jolivet, Sancerre (Loire France 2010), Chapoutier Blog 13 - The table setting made guests speechless!Estate “La Petite Ruche” (Crozes Hermitage 2007) and, of course, Taittinger Brut La Francaise (Champagne NV).  Guests enjoying the evening and admiring the collections included William Wolf, Martha Melman, Leslie Prizant Goodman, Laura Schwartz, Greg Hyder, Linda Yu, Sylvia Blog 15 - Gerrard Messague, Bridgitte Young, Tom WoodPerez, Suzy and Al Friedman, Melissa and Brian Babcock, Carol Beitler, Heather Farley, Paul Rehder, Greg Hyder, Toni and Rick Canada, Susanna Negovan, Mary and Tim Smithe, Heather Farley, Sherren Leigh and Sonya Jackson among others. Blog 1 - Ginger Zee, Kyler Powell and Christian CarabiasChicago’s second annual Red Dress Party was held in the Loop recently at the beautiful Joffrey Towers, located at 10 E. Randolph. More than 300 people donned their favorite red fashions to benefit the Aids Foundation of Chicago and the Equality Project. This party began in the 1990's when two gentlemen who were dating discovered they had both Blog 2contracted HIV/AIDS. They swore to one another they would each wear red dresses to their partner's funeral. From this promise the concept of the Red Dress Party began. Currently, there are Red Dress parties all over the U.S. from Seattle to Chicago. The highlight of the evening was a performance by Blog 3 - Dr. Michael O’Meara, Miss Foozie and Margaret O’ConnorBeverly McClellan, who was a contestant in the Final 4 on the first season of the popular NBC show, “The Voice.” “The Voice” introduced Beverly to the world as a singer of stunning power and range comparable to Etta James, Janis Joplin and Melissa Etheridge to name a few Blog 4 - Happy supporterstalents whose legacies she evokes. The party also included a dramatic aerial act and a decadent VIP Red Carpet reception hosted by the beloved Miss Lucy Foozie. Ginger Zee (“Good Morning America” meteorologist) and actor/singer Christian Blog 5 - Christian Carabias, Elena Samokhina and Beverly McClellanCarabias were the hosts for the evening. Event chair and board president Kyler Ashton Powell sang a memorable duet with McClellan to Cee Lo Green’s “F*ck You” song. Blog 1 - Event Chair Richard Wester, GPC Alliance President Eunita Rushing and emcee LeeAnn TrotterIf you missed this year’s fourth annual Fleurotica Fashion Show, please put it on your calendars NOW for next year! I’ve never seen anything quite like this show which benefitted Garfield Park Conservatory with all of the designs created from Blog 2flowers, leaves, moss and any other type of plant material imaginable. The backstage action was almost as exciting as the runway with designers scrambling to get the last petal glued on before the show began. I loved seeing the stunning wedding gown floating down the runway by Flower Petal. The Virgin Mary was certainly a show-stopper too with the model Blog 3 - Winning designer, Lance Larsenclasping her hands in prayer before she walked off the stage. And the tulip skirt was too darling for words by Whole Food Market South Loop. But I’m getting ahead of myself…the cocktail reception was delightful, too, with some of the best food tastings I’ve sampled in a long, long time. Marcello’s served turkey, Blog 4 - Judges Dennis Remer and Borris Powell having fun!artichoke and sun-dried tomato paninis. Phil Stefani’s was dishing out delicious Korean noodles with bok choy and mushrooms in a soy-ginger sauce. Kenmare Catering couldn’t keep the blue shrimp coming fast enough! One of the highlights was Goose Island’s Blog 5 - Designer Peach Carrclever food and beer pairings: Pulled pork was infused with their latest brew called Pepe Nero and salmon was soaked in Sofie beer. Beyond Events was serving six kinds of bruschetta and Wishbone Restaurant had a line every time I looked so I’m not sure what they were serving! A five-piece band, Visions, played while guests perused the extensive silent auction Blog 6 - Event Creative’s Sean Cannon (2nd from R) and friendsofferings. Soon, we were all summoned to the second level of Venue One where the show was about to begin. Participating designers included Flower Child, A Stem Above, Zuzu’s Petals, Ildiko Blog 7 - Iron Florist competitors Peter Vrotsos and Matt BarrettPhillips Designs, Natural Beauties Florals, Luxe Floral Chicago, Flower Petal, Anna Held, Scarlet Petal, Blumgarten & Co., Stem Line, Green Jean’s and Whole Foods Market South Loop. Even real life fashion designer Peach Carr showed a stunning creation titled “Driving Miss Daisy” to wild applause, with styling and makeup by AJ’s Salon (who was there filming his Blog 8“Chicagolicious” reality show). Judging was difficult with all of the breathtaking designs but Borris P
owell, Dennis Remer, Christy Webby and Adam Schwerner seemed to have a lot of fun doing it and awarded “Best in Show” to Blumgarten & Blog 9Co.’s Lance Larsen. Darling LeeAnn Trotter (NBC 5 entertainment reporter) returned as emcee this year and did a great job, of course! Who doesn’t love LeeAnn?! She introduced the president of Garfield Park Conservatory Alliance, Eunita Rushing, who reminded us that all proceeds from this event will help to rebuild the roof of the Conservatory which was Blog 10 - Nena Ivon (R) and frienddamaged by a freak hailstorm last summer. (Sixty percent of the roof was destroyed in the Fern Room, Show House and Desert House.) There was also a live auction that included a Jamaican getaway that sold for $2,500, a Chicago Stay-Cation that sold for $1,750, and a Taste of Chicago package and a yacht experience that included dinner for eight – all included in the more than $80,000 that was raised for the Conservatory. Opened in 1908 and designed by noted landscape architect Jens Jensen, the Garfield Park Conservatory is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Blog 1 - Bill Kurtis, Jeff Garlin, Donna LaPietraThe recent grand opening party for the new Allium restaurant attracted an overflow crowd of 600 foodies and fashionistas to the seventh floor of the Four Seasons recently. Host for the night was funnyman Jeff Garlin (see our Blog 2 - Host Vince Anzalone, Erica Bethe Levin, Jessica Zweig and friendinterview on Watch312.com below). This American restaurant with a farm-to-table menu is by Chef Kevin Hickey whose inspiration was his multi-cultural neighborhood in Chicago where he grew up. Blog 3 - Jesus Salguiero and Linda O’KeefeThe menu features Tallgrass beef (in a brilliant collaboration with CBS’ Bill Kurtis), game bird sausage, suckling pig flat bread, Wagyu beef short-rib sliders, bison tartare, Chicago-style hotdogs, Wisconsin walleye, chorizo cheese chips, oysters, lamb neck Blog 4 - Lakesha and Jim Rose with Linda O’Keefeagnolotti and crab fritters to name just a few of the delicious offerings. Allium, a name derived from Latin origins, meaning “onion,” pays homage to Chicago whose name comes from the Native American “Shikaakwa” or “wild onion.” The restaurant’s beverage program also echoes the restaurant’s commitment to American artisan producers. The beer list is strictly Midwestern, including the limited-release Allium Blog 5 - With Vince Anzalone, Vonita Reescer, Diana Palomar and Lonnie RodriguezRoseus, a Belgian red ale created by Chef Hickey and Goose Island’s head brewer, Jared Rouben. Blog 1I am so excited to share the news about this year’s Joffrey Ballet Celebration Gala on Sunday, May 6th at the historic Palmer House Hilton, located at17 E. Monroe. This year’s event will be a tribute Blog 2to the Joffrey’s dynamic Women’s Board who have raised a staggering $16 million in ten years for the Joffrey, making them the largest single contributor to this organization! The night will begin with a special performance at the Auditorium Theatre beginning promptly at 6:30 p.m. Afterwards, trolleys will whisk guests to the Palmer House where a cocktail reception will begin in the State Ballroom around 7:30 p.m. The Rich Daniels Orchestra will provide elegant background music to start our evening off in style. A special commemorative tribute video will be presented by co-chair Donna LaPietra of Kurtis Productions with a very clever surprise thrown in. The Arpino Angel Awards will be given to the Blog 3producers of the film “Joffrey: Mavericks of American Dance” and they include Jay Alix, Una Jackman and Erica and Harold Ramis. And for the first time, we are partnering with the Joffrey Auxiliary Board for an exciting “Grand Finale” party in the Empire Room. Blog 1 - Days of Our Lives cast Bill and Susan Hayes, Matthew AshfordChicago’s springtime coming out party, “An Evening in Bloom,” previewed at the Chicago Flower & Garden Show on March 9th at Navy Pier. Twenty-five stylized gardens were featured this year with proceeds benefitting Chicago Gateway Green and Friends Blog 2 - CFGS Tony Abruscato and Jenny Pickfordof the Parks. In keeping with this night’s theme, which reflected the influence of fashion and design in floral, plant and landscape creations, models strolled through the show wearing new creations by local young designers from the Chicago Fashion Incubator. Cast members from the NBC daytime drama “Days of Our Lives” had a featured garden in the show and greeted guests as they sampled fine Blog 3wines and hors d’oeuvres from Harry Caray’s, Dirk’s Fish and Gourmet Shop and Cyrano’s Bistrot Wine Bar, among others. Highlights from this year’s show featured a White House vegetable garden and a lifestyle rooftop garden. Co-chairs for this night were Lee and Sandy Golub. More than 75 entries from the Garden Guild and other GCA clubs will incorporate a theme of the historic Route 66 highway, also known as America’s Main Street. Man-about-town with a real job, Paul Iacono, celebrated his birthday on March 29th, with an intimate dinner for friends at RPM Italian Blog 2 - Jennifer Sutton, Paul and Rachel SchwanzRestaurant. Guest Rachel Schwanz of The Entertaining Company did an outstanding job of decorating the private room with beautiful flowers and candlelight much to the delight of Blog 3 - Monika Dixon, Saira Cooper and Rhonda SandersonGayle and Jim Anthony, Saira and Chris Cooper, Rhonda Sanderson (who was also celebrating a birthday), William Holdeman, Jennifer Sutton, Cindy Burns, Paul’s sweet dad Ralph Iacono, Monika and Geoff Dixon, Eva Pawlus, Diana Iacono and Cadey and Andrew Hershoff. Hedwig and Bob at BDAnother birthday shout-out goes to the ageless, beloved and beautiful Hedwig Golant! Her unique party was held at Ten Pin, where guests tested their bowling skills…some were good, some not so good but everyone had a great time! Love you, Hedwig!
