As my friends know, I live for the holiday season and there's no better place to experience it than right here in the Windy City! And, although I don't quite have the weather I want yet- a soft, sparkling blanket of snow – I'm still very thankful for what we have. I’m glad we have the Christkindlmarket back as I’m a huge fan (through Dec. 24). I love the festive feeling, the food and the one-of-a-kind ornaments. And yes, every year, I pick up one of the new mugs (it’s now become a tradition and, as Chuck says, yet another collection for me.) The tree is up at Macy’s (still Marshall Field’s to me) and the Walnut Room beckons for our annual Christmas luncheon. This city shines so brightly during the holidays; it thrills me to see the homes decorated, the pop-ups all around town and all the fun-filled parties with friends to look forward to. Our tree is up and our home is so cozy and cheerful. And, even though it’s a complete hassle getting all the decor out of storage and dragging it home; once it’s set up- all the stress just melts away. (We have a Balsam Hills flip tree and decorating has never been easier!) My wish for Santa this year will be a little different than years’ past. We’ve had a tough few years, not only in Chicago, but in the country and the world. I believe in biorhythms and feel like we are all due for an uptick in our charts. I hope/wish we can all come together in a friendlier way and agree to accept each other’s differences as well as celebrate our commonalities. Sounds simplistic, but if anyone can do it, Santa can! I will be putting out extra milk and cookies. Here’s to a brighter, happier, healthier and more prosperous future for us all! _______________________________________________________________________________

Guerdy Abraira from “The Real Housewives of Miami”, who shared her story as a breast cancer survivor and championed early detection. The event, co-chaired by Dana Sanders and Jenny Stevens, featured Matthew Hoffman’s iconic 'BIG hope' sculpture, temporarily relocated from Michigan Avenue, which served as a powerful tribute to those impacted by breast cancer. Through partnerships with top Chicago hospitals, the Lynn Sage Foundation is driving breakthroughs in treatment access. Yet, as the American Cancer Society notes, breast cancer still affects 1 in 8 women in the U.S., underlining the ongoing need for research and support. “Everyone deserves hope and access to lifesaving care,” said co-founder Laura Sage, as the foundation works tirelessly to make that a reality.

Zemeckis, accompanied by his beautiful wife Leslie and daughter Zsa Zsa (both in the film), was warmly welcomed on stage by CIFF Artistic Director Mimi Plauché and Managing Director Vivian Teng. They celebrated the filmmaker’s iconic work on Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and more. Ahead of the screening, Zemeckis mingled with fans at a VIP reception and charmed attendees on the Red Carpet. Later, he joined Kutza and family for dinner at RL, capping off a memorable night before heading to New York to support Back to the Future: The Musical. The Chicago International Film Festival, presented by Cinema/Chicago, fosters global connections through film, making this award a perfect honor for Zemeckis and his unforgettable storytelling.

Chef Art shared his thoughts on Dia de los Muertos, “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t cry for them [late friends and family] or think about them. It took two movies, Coco and Remember Me, to teach America and the world about this beautiful custom.” Dia de los Muertos is a two-day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their departed family members. It’s a rare holiday for celebrating both death and life that is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed. It is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.

The 900 Shops delivered the first tree lighting on the avenue with its "Illuminate 900 event," Make-A-Wish Illinois' biggest holiday fundraiser! Set in a winter wonderland on all levels, the experience included holiday activations, delicious food and drink, the ZZAZZETTES, toy soldiers, Ava Fain, Ballet Chicago and SANTA, all wrapped up in a holiday bow! The 900 Shops first presented this unique experience in 2016 and, since then, have raised over $116,000 for charity!

For the 21st year Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas is celebrating ethnic holiday traditions of nearly 100 different nationalities at the “Christmas Trees from Around the World” display at her office. The annual celebration of cultural diversity showcases handcrafted ornaments and decorations. “Christmas Trees from Around the World” is a display of 3-foot trees decorated by members of various ethnic and religious communities. Fa La La is a pop-up experience (socially distanced, of course) with something fun for the whole family. Santa will be granting wishes on December 6 and 13, with professional digital memories included. Wreath-making classes, a showroom filled with snow globes, custom Christmas ornaments and more (all by Illinois craftsmen) will be offered too. 3) ) The Holiday Shoppe–This festive jewel box is event design guru Tom Kehoe's first holiday shop and it's filled to the brim with wreaths, garlands, trees, centerpieces, ornaments and more at the corner of Superior and Rush Streets (108 E. Superior). Other pop-up locations include The Park at Lakeshore East (333 E Benton Place), Ranalli's in Lincoln Park (1925 N. Lincoln) and Federales in the West Loop (180 N. Morgan).
4) Santa Baby Christmas Bar –Indoor/outdoor over-the-top Christmas decor with three levels of gram-worthy experiences. Deuce's Major League Bar, renamed "Santa Baby" for the holidays, is located at 3505 N. Clark and will put any Grinch in the holiday spirit. 5) Mangel Florist–You wouldn't think of a hotel shop as being something very special but Mangel's is an exception and definitely worth a visit. Besides exquisite floral arrangements, the store has a delightful selection of holiday decor and gifts arranged as if by Mrs. Claus herself. This year, the store and the hotel it lives in, The Drake, are celebrating their 100th anniversaries!
Botanic Garden's Lightscape, a sellout in its 2nd year!
And I would've definitely included the Chicago Botanic Garden's Lightscape on this list but, for the second year in a row, the event sold out before it was even open! The Botanic's Woman's Board hosted an exclusive first look at Lightscape on November 12. This dramatic, holiday light show installation attracted a socially distanced crowd that meandered along a mile-long, illuminated trail while enjoying hot bites and cocktails. Artistic installations included the popular Cathedral of Light, a fire garden, a colorful enchanted forest, a neon lakeside trail, illuminated waterfalls and so much more. Kudos to the creators of the Chicago Makers Holiday Pop-Up Shop, Anna Romo and Monica Little! This delightful store is filled with holiday gift ideas at 1279 N. Milwaukee Avenue in Wicker Park. Handmade items include pottery, gemstone jewelry, soy wax candles, organic skincare, leather goods, greeting cards, art, woodwork, sustainable fashion, bath bombs, clay earrings, plants, locally roasted coffee and so much more. Kudos again to the amazing efforts always put forth by The Service Club of Chicago! Its Phantom Gala set a fundraising record, bringing in over $365,000! And mind you, this wasn't even a virtual event, it was a week-long online campaign created by co-chairs Mary Lasky, Tina Weller, Mary Claire Moll and Kristine Kinder. One of my very favorite writers is Rick Kogan, who's had a column in the Chicago Tribune, among other publications, for a very long time. He writes about Chicago in ways that make me weep. He doesn't strike me as the sentimental type but his answer about the best gift he's ever received made me think otherwise. "A kiss on the cheek and a silver dollar from a woman dressed as Mrs. Santa Clause at the bygone Tavern Club when I was 10, " he said. His favorite gift to give are "books of all kinds." Sad news for fans of The Joffrey Ballet's lead dancer, Fabrice Calmels, who will be retiring this month. After 18 years with the Joffrey, he will follow his heart and career to L.A. where he hopes to "pursue his next adventure as an artist." 38-year-old Calmels said the move came about "because a lot of things that I want to do could be movie related. I also feel like it's far away from ballet." His final performances, in "The Nutcracker" will be Dec. 26, 27 and a 2 pm show on Dec. 29. (For tickets, more info, click here!)

Happy birthday BILL RUSSELL! Bill's darling wife bought a birthday shout-out for him in my blog at the recent Service Club of Chicago's (fabulous) gala auction! What a sweet gift to surprise your handsome husband, with all in the name of charity! Bill is truly someone you should know. He's well known in the boating, yachting and commercial boat business. Captain Bill started his maritime career as a crewman on Western Rivers Towboats in 1977 and joined the Coast Guard in 1981. During more than 20 years of service, he has served in several mission areas including search and rescue, law enforcement, marine safety and also served aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Sherman in the Pacific Ocean, Bering Sea and Arctic Ocean. Since retiring from the Coast Guard, Russell has served as Director of Marine Operations for Chicago Line Cruises and Director of Safety and Training for Illinois Marine Towing. His current work includes co-ownership of Chicago Boat Adventures. He and his wife Lori Tisinai are active in many philanthropic activities in the Chicago area, including supporting the Service Club of Chicago in grand style! Happy BD Bill!

The National Runaway Safeline (NRS) hosted A Night of Magic & Wonder: Celebrating the Spirit of Youth at Revel Fulton Market on November 2. Nearly 300 people celebrated/honored the Chapin Hall Center for Children (located at the University of Chicago) and the cast and crew of NBC’s “Chicago P.D.”, and The event helped raise critical funds to help end youth homelessness and featured performances by the Magic Penthouse magicians, award presentations and a sneak peek of a new documentary, “Lost in

America." The Spirit of Youth Award was presented to Bryan Samuels, executive director of Chapin Hall, for the research center’s dedication to improving the lives of society’s most vulnerable children, youth and families. NBC’s “Chicago P.D.” actor and Harvey, IL, native LaRoyce Hawkins accepted the Spotlight Award on behalf of the television show. His energized spoken word performance reinforced the need to nurture young minds. He also spoke about the police drama’s commitment to telling the stories of real people living on the streets. The program continued with remarks from "Lost in America" film director Rotimi Rainwater He spoke about his personal experience being homeless and the ability to rise above obstacles.
The Women’s Board of Lincoln Park Zoo hosted more than 200 Zoo supporters for an intimate evening at The Casino on November 21 during its biennial event ZooLA (Zoo Live Auction). Raising more than $245,000 to benefit this beloved institution, the event offered guests a live auction where rare, luxury packages were available for purchase, including an opportunity to name two of Lincoln Park Zoo’s Chilean flamingos. Co-chaired by Jennifer Caruso and Beth Harrington Stamos, the event supported the Women’s Board's mission to obtain the highest standards of animal care, education and conservation for the Zoo as well as ensure a free educational and all-inclusive experience that is accessible to all.

She said she has decided to "consciously uncouple" from corporate life and share her story that includes an MS (Multiple Sclerosis) diagnosis; managing mobility/chronic issues; suffering significant personal loss but yet still building an impactful career and a purpose-driven happy life. She's a recognized motivational speaker across the US/Canada. Tails in the City hosted their 16th annual Halloween Pet Parade and Party on Sunday, October 27th. Over 150 dogs who arrived in costume, along with their owners, paraded to Washington Square Park to raise money for PAWS Chicago, one of the largest No Kill shelters in the country. Prizes were awarded for the Scariest Costume, Funniest Costume, Best Duo or Group, Most Glamorous, and Best In Show. Best in Show honors went to a Mary Poppins pup look-a-like. You won’t need your skis to enjoy An Evening In Park City, Utah with Camp One Step by Children’s Oncology Services at TheRitz-Carlton Chicago. In 2019, Camp One Step is refocusing the “destination” meaning of flight from a culturally-themed gala to that of the journey of the campers. Byron, along with supermodel Heidi Klum, introduced the movie to a roomful of kids at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles recently. ARCTIC DOGS was created for kids, so there was no better audience to premiere the movie than with the kids at this hospital through its partnership with Holiday Heroes, a nonprofit that provides joy and normalcy to

Over the last decade, Holiday Heroes has become an established partner for children’s hospitals across the country with a growing national footprint. The 34th annual Friends of Prentice "An Evening in Oz" benefit raised more than $750,000 for research of women's health. FOP board member Dr. Michael Socol was honored for his distinguished service to Prentice Women’s Hospital over the past 40 years, including the training of over 350 obstetric residents and 40 fellows and for delivering over 6,000 babies over his long career.
