News of the issue has been featured in Forbes, People and the Daily Mail as it's a first for the magazine and celebrates diversity, empowerment and 5 decades of Playmates. This party was the first without any Hefners and I didn't know quite what to expect as I'm a lifelong fan of the Hefner family and, of course, the man who started it all. At first, it felt a little like a betrayal but then the incredibly welcoming Playboy staff made me, and

everyone else, feel right at home. In fact, I felt like I was right where I belonged again. It was also great to finally put faces to the names of some of the staff at the magazine. I was thrilled to see that everything seems to be in very capable hands with the likes of Cat Auer, Erica Loewy, Kristi Beck and Micaela Leone, to name a few. Playboy CEO Ben Kohn gave a short speech at the party detailing all of the magazine's recent triumphs and plans for the future, which looks very bright indeed! He announced

"The Wizard of Oz" was filmed a block away and, as the story goes, Judy, the Munchkins and several other cast members used to hang out here. On this night, I saw Playmates Jeana (Tomasino) Keough (November 1980 Playmate, Real Housewives of Orange County), Michelle Drake (PM May 1979), Vendela Lindblom (PM Jan. 2019), Bonnie Large (PM March 1973), Cathy St. George (PM August 1982), Raquel Pomplun (PMOY 2013), Ashley Doris (March 2013), Louann Fernald (June 1979 PM), Tiffany Toth (September 2011) and Victoria Valentino (PM Sept. 1963),

and so many more. We took lots of photos and chatted about what we were all up to. No matter how long I'm away from Playboy and the Playmates, our interactions always feel like we just left off yesterday. It's a very unique sorority that I'm proud to be a part of. It was a night I'll never forget. The excitement over the success of the magazine combined with seeing myself featured 40 years after appearing as a centerfold seemed like a fairytale. Thank you Hef for creating such a loving, loyal and supportive family. I'm so happy to see his vision being carried on in such grand style. I think, and I hope, he likes what he sees. I know I do. News Corp Australia reported that "there are real concerns entire species of plants and animals have been wiped out by bush fires following revelations almost 500 million animals have died since the crisis began." "Ecologists from the University of Sydney now estimate 480 million mammals, birds, and reptiles have been lost since September," according to News Corp. "That figure is likely to soar following the devastating fires which have ripped through Victoria and the [New South Wales] South Coast over the past couple of days, leaving several people dead or unaccounted for, razing scores of homes and leaving thousands stranded." Koalas in particular have been devastated by the fires, Graham noted, because they "really have no capacity to move fast enough to get away." As Reuters reported Tuesday, "Australia's bushland is home to a range of indigenous fauna, including kangaroos, koalas, wallabies, possums, wombats, and echidnas. Officials fear that 30 percent of just one koala colony on the country's northeast coast, or between 4,500 and 8,400, have been lost in the recent fires." Too sad for words.

Spurlock. All of the images in the calendar were shot by photographer/writer David Sutton, who has a keen eye for capturing the shared humanity between people and their pets. Retrospect Chicago returns!

Retrospect Chicago returns on April 24 through April 26 at 1341 W. Randolph, the home of Randolph Street Market! This second annual event, hosted by Image Pilots/ RSM, will feature a vintage fashion show produced by Nena Ivon on Friday, April 24 followed by the weekend market. Last year, was such a blast with so many beautifully curated items for sale–jewelry, clothing, one-of-a-kind designer creations and so much more! Tracey Tarantino DiBuono and Sherrill Bodine–past and future Service Club presidents.

Last night's Service Club of Chicago meeting saw the passing of the gavel from outgoing president Tracey Tarantino DiBuono to incoming president Sherrill Bodine, who has accepted a one year term in honor of her dear friend and longtime SC member, the late Lynda Silverman. Tracey delivered a heartfelt speech on her time in office that had the spillover crowd in happy tears. She said, "My heart is full with the joy of connecting on so many personal levels as well as professional. I will cherish these moments and look forward to continued friendships made. I deeply appreciate all of the hard work, determination, coordination, co-operation, and time devoted by all of you. I am proud to stand amongst you. Thank you for your support and kindness." Congrats, with love, to Tracey, Sherrill and all of the hard-working members of this amazing nonprofit!

I don't know about you, but I'm feeling a little short-changed on the holidays. It seems like as soon as I got our decor up, it was time for it to come down. Oh, I'm still holding out but am noticing all the lights blinking out around town and it's so sad that people are giving up so soon (Michael Caputo, I'm talking to you!) Anyway, it's staying put for a while longer as it brings such a warm, cheery sparkle to our home. It's not over till the Christmas Tree sings and I don't hear anything yet.

I was proud to interview him on the opening night of this exhibit where many of his "ladies" were in attendance wearing his glam gowns. We touched on his many accomplishments– chairman/CEO of Creativity United, founder of the "We Dream in Color Foundation,", self-taught fashion designer, minister and many others. His foundation supports the homeless and at-risk youth as well as men going through transitional assistance programs. His Humanitarian Awards, which will be held this year on Saturday, July 13, will be emceed by Suzanne LeMignot and feature a fashion show and awards program. Chicago Ducky Derby coming August 8 to benefit Special Olympics!

Over 60,000 rubber ducks will drop off the Wabash Bridge into the Chicago River at 1 pm, August 8. The 14th annual Chicago Ducky Derby will benefit Special Olympics and enthrall people of all ages who watch the ducks "race" to the finish line. Marsha Brenner

I was so sad to learn of the passing of Marsha Brenner, the long-time executive director of the Apparel Industry Board. We had lunch together the week before with her "right arm," Ambar Campos. She was so enthusiastic about upcoming plans that it was very hard to believe that she passed away so soon after. During lunch, she talked about how lucky she was to have found Ambar to help her out as she advocated for Chicago designers. Marsha was always a tough little cookie who spoke her mind. I won't lie when I say we had our run-ins but I always admired her tenacity and love for Chicago fashion. She will be missed by all who knew her and especially by the designers whose lives she touched. It was a private service with family requesting donations be made to the COPD Foundation.

The event upstairs was by-invite-only but tickets were offered at $100 each with all proceeds benefiting Misericordia, a nonprofit that supports over 600 children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. More than 300 people watched the panel discussion on screens set up downstairs at the restaurant so everyone could feel they were a part of the celebration. It was a thrill to relive the memories and see so many iconic photos as they scrolled on multiple screens throughout the event. Although, my fondest memory was getting engaged the day the restaurant opened and going there to celebrate, as we still do for every milestone (and just for fun too). Love and congrats Gibsons! You just keep getting better with age! 🙂

I’ve never done this before so please forgive me but I’m including the recent Stanley Paul-Raelene Mittelman Scholarship Benefit in my blog this week. Why you ask
do I beg forgiveness? Because this year, I was the evening’s honoree and it was such a wonderful night with so many friends who turned out that I would like
to share it with you. (I hope you enjoy it!) I received a call from the Apparel Industry Board a few months ago. It was Marsha Brenner: “Hello Candace. The Stanley Paul Foundation
would like to honor you this year at the Casino. Just say ‘yes.’” Are you kidding me? HELL YES!!! You could’ve knocked me over with a feather! My mind flew in a thousand different directions with the first thought being how very
humbled I felt to be receiving this honor, especially following in the footsteps of Chicago notables who included Hazel Barr, Mamie Walton, Bill Zwecker, Nena Ivon,
Dori Wilson, Leslie Hindman, Donna LaPietra, Mary Ann Childers, Mark Heister, Tony Jones, Victor Skrebneski and the late Beverly Blettner, among others. I also panicked wondering
if anyone would even show up. And then when Marsha mentioned I would need to choose some speakers, I relaxed and knew this would be an evening filled with friends…no need to worry.
It was easy to choose who I would ask to speak for me. I’ve known Rhonda Sanderson longer than anyone else in Chicago. She was the first person I met at the original Playboy
Mansion after Hef and we became and still are great friends – she was even the maid of honor at my wedding. Thank goodness she said yes. I also asked Helen Melchior, a relatively new friend by comparison
but one with whom I have already shared a lifetime of wonderful memories. I met Helen through the Joffrey Ballet and we have never looked back. I love her and I love her beautiful family, too. I’ve known the human
tornado, better known as Leslie Hindman, for 32 years. Words can’t describe how much I admire her for her incredible business acumen but what I love the most about her is her loyalty to her friends. Legendary
funnyman Tom Dreesen and I have been friends since our days on Rush Street. Even though he’s traveled far and wide making the world laugh including Frank Sinatra,
he’s never forgotten his Harvey, Ill. roots, never uses foul language and always has a positive outlook. How could you NOT love him? When I first met Chicago Tribune VP/associate editor Joycelyn Winnecke, she
was seated behind this BIG desk with four other high-powered execs for my interview for my Sunday column. I was shaking in my shoes, as you can imagine, but her kindness, honesty
and intelligence made me realize I had a friend here no matter what happened. Thankfully, she hired me and I sure hope you’re all reading my Sunday Candid Candace column! I first met Donna LaPietra when she
was the chair of the “Having a Ball” program which introduced Chicago Public School kids to ballroom dancing. (Dori Wilson, another Stanley Paul honoree, got me involved
with this wonderful event.) It was so intimidating to walk into this meeting with so many notable Chicagoans seated around this massive conference table. And I’ll
never forget the first thing she said: “Don’t cha just want to get up there and dance?” Well, it was astounding to me how this dynamic, well-connected woman could be so down to earth. She is not only
my friend but a great friend to Chicago, too. So now, I had my dream team of speakers in place and the next thought was, “OMG, what will I wear?” Well, a few weeks earlier I had run into the
renowned local designer Barbara Bates at WVON’s 50th anniversary gala. She had an outfit on that was so stunning, I became her stalker for the evening. I finally asked, “Barbara, do you
think you could design something for me for my event on April 24th?” She said yes and inwardly I screamed with excitement. I also wore the most incredible jewelry that night
from the legendary house of Van Cleef & Arpels – the diamonds were so bright and beautiful, I needed sunglasses. In short, I felt like a fairy princess. The event was held at the very exclusive, very private club, the Casino on Delaware. Their rules restrict any photography of the decor
but trust me, it is exquisite beyond measure. When the day arrived, I was told my event was the largest one they’ve ever hosted for the Stanley Paul Foundation Benefit with almost 400 people in attendance. I was (and still am!) on cloud
nine. A Perfect Event’s Debi Lilly did the most, well, perfect floral arrangements: There were glorious mixed bouquets with white hydrangeas on every table and the piece de
resistance was a life-size portrait done by beloved artist Rosemary Fanti that she had placed on an easel for everyone to sign. This is a memory I will always cherish and can’t believe
how lucky I am to have such supportive friends. Stanley spoke first thanking the crowd and sharing the story of his beautiful sister, Raelene Mittleman. (This scholarship was created in her honor by her loving brother.) Her love and
devotion to the world of fashion and design inspired him to establish this foundation in 1990. Proceeds from the event will help support local fashion design students and give
them a leg-up on their dreams. Sun-Times entertainment columnist/Fox news reporter Bill Zwecker was the event chair and emcee; always perfection at the podium, his words are right
on target and he never needs notes. He truly is Mr. Chicago and I was so excited to have him there! And then the speakers began. Their words made me cry and Donna’s video even included
one of the earliest clips of me as a Playboy Bunny with legendary newscaster John “Bulldog” Drummond. My voice was so young and squeaky I barely recognized
myself! Where she found this clip, I will never know but suffice it to say, this video will also be a cherished possession. (You can see it below.) Joyce teased me about how aghast
the newsroom reporters were over my emails with happy faces and exclamation points. Leslie shared memories of two African American people who raised me and who really were surrogate
parents to me, Mary and Jim Johnson, for which I was so very grateful. Helen spoke about our Joffrey memories and how we are always there for each other through good times and bad and I
added we joke that we “share the same organs.” Rhonda should’ve been a stand-up comedian – she had the audience laughing so hard. It was one of the most
memorable nights of my life and I want to thank all of my friends who attended from the bottom of my heart. I know there was a fabulous buffet served but who had time to eat!? And last but
not least, Eli’s Cheesecake even created little chocolate truffle cakes as a giveaway with my picture on top. My heart is full and I may never come
down off this cloud. Thanks for listening and thanks to all who shared this memorable night with me! A special thanks to AIBI’s Marsha Brenner and Kevin Sullivan who made everything seem so effortless. 🙂 It was truly an evening I will never forget! The Women’s Board of The Joffrey Ballet hosted its annual Spring Gala on April 19th and it was a huge success, thanks to dynamic co-chairs Deborah and Cody Engle and Astrid (Mrs. McKay) McKinnon! Nearly 800 people attended the spectacular celebration of
the company and its educational programs. The gala raised more than $1.23 million to help the Joffrey positively impact the lives of thousands of children, teens and young adults each year through their Community Engagement and Joffrey Academy of Dance programs. The annual black-tie
event began at 6:30 p.m. at the Auditorium Theatre of Roosevelt University with unforgettable performance pieces by The Joffrey Ballet company, including a new piece entitled “Prokofiev
Suite,” created by Alexei Kremnev, the artistic director of the Joffrey Academy of Dance, the official school of The Joffrey Ballet. In addition to this world premiere, the company performed Gerald
Arpino’s “Light Rain” and other pieces curated by artistic director Ashley Wheater for this happy occasion. New this year, the program featured the Joffrey company dancers and 100-plus Joffrey students, including the 40 trainees who hail from
Brazil, Mexico, Spain, Australia, France, Japan, Korea and the U.S.!! Highlighted throughout the evening were the transformations and inspirations of a dancer, from the Community Engagement and Joffrey
Academy of Dance students to the internationally renowned company dancers. Following the performances, guests were whisked away via trolleys to the Chicago Hilton for cocktails and dinner in the Grand Ballroom. Guests were treated to a delicious menu
created just for the gala by the Chicago Hilton’s Executive Chef Mario Garcia. After dinner, the evening was topped off with a lively after-party, as guests joined the Joffrey company members for
dancing in the “Blue Star Lounge.” The Hilton was transformed with amazing dance-inspired floral designs and complementary lighting. Bill Pollack Music entertained guests from the
moment they arrived at the Hilton and all during dinner with a full orchestra. A DJ with live Latin percussionists entertained at the after-party. I was thrilled to present the Luxury Live auction with master auctioneer Greg Dellinger (aka G-Man). I can’t WAIT to attend the School of the Art Institute’s “The Walk” on May 3rd for its 79th annual fashion show. To celebrate this milestone event, Swarovski – the leading designer of fashion jewelry and the
presenting sponsor – hosted a cocktail reception recently to unveil its window installation in honor of Fashion 2013. This is Swarovski’s third year partnering with this prestigious design institution and will be supporting its
students by providing jewelry and crystals to compliment and complete their designs for the show as well as supporting the SAIC Fashion Department Scholarship Fund. Swarovski also provided jewelry to create a visual window display at its flagship store at 540 N.

The Walter and Connie Payton Foundation Celebrity Bartending Event, hosted recently at the Glen Prairie restaurant, included a fun-filled evening with Brittney, Jarrett and Connie Payton as well as super radio personality Eddie V. All bar tips benefited the WCPF charity including the amazing line up of
autograph auction items. To add to the special evening, the City of Glen Ellyn presented the Payton family with a proclamation naming April 24th the Walter and Connie Payton Foundation Day. Awwww…love this! Congrats to the Paytons!

The Michael Jordan/Yvette Prieto nuptials are history now with the lovebirds back in their 35,000-square-foot nest in the elegant Bears Club in Jupiter, Florida. Guests are still talking about the wedding tent which, according to my sources, was one of the world’s largest at 40,000 square feet! It was even bigger than their house! I can only imagine the wedding gifts they must’ve received – after all, what would you ever buy for Michael
Jordan that he didn't already have? Well, I bet none topped this idea for the legendary basketball superstar and his model wife: Upper Deck (the world’s leading sports memorabilia company) created a one-of-a-kind Michael Jordan wedding card. The oversized card, named “Shining Moments,” has been signed by 16 athletes and celebrities who are friends of the famous

Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago along with Holy Family Villa and the Bishop Lyne Residence hosted “An Evening to Honor Bishop Timothy J. Lyne” on April 13th. Bishop Timothy Lyne was
presented with the Holy Family Caritas Sanctae Familiae Award in recognition of his 70 years of the ordination to the priesthood, 30 years of his ordination as bishop and for his love and dedication to the people of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The event took place at the Sheraton Chicago Hotel & Towers and included a reception, dinner and program. Guests enjoyed fine cuisine and entertainment by the City
Lights Orchestra and proceeds from the dinner benefitted the Holy Family Villa Expansion Project. The honorary chairman was Monsignor Michael M. Boland and the event chairs were Reverend John R. Gorman and Monsignor John A. Kuzinskas. Congrats Bishop Lyne!

More than 600 guests were undeterred by area floods and determined to enjoy spring at the Chicago Botanic Garden’s Antiques & Garden Fair Preview Evening. Though the flooding required “all hands on deck,” the party was smooth sailing: The event raised $250,000 for the Garden’s conservation, education and research programs! Preview partygoers dined on a selection of sumptuous dishes prepared by Jewell Events as they shopped an exquisite array of antiques from 120 exhibitors from the United

The League of Chicago Theatres will present its 2013 Spring Gala, an elegant, extravagant evening celebrating the 175th anniversary of Chicago theater. This event will bring together supporters from the community to champion more than 200 Chicago theatre companies. This year’s event will be held on May 20th at 5:30 p.m. in the
Grand Ballroom of the luxurious InterContinental Chicago, located at 505 N. Michigan Avenue. This year, the League will honor Jeff Perry as the recipient of the 2013 Tribute Award. Writers’ Theatre’s Artistic Director Michael Halberstam will receive the 2013 Artistic Leadership Award. The Jeff Committee, now celebrating its 45th anniversary, will receive the
first-ever Theatre Advocacy Award and the 16th Street Theater will receive the fifth annual Broadway in Chicago Emerging Theatre Award. Individual tickets are $300 and tables of 10 are $3,000. This woman is going to have to buy a bigger trophy case! Beloved scribe Stella Foster will be receiving the first ever Woman of the Decade Legend of Print Media Award from the All-Illinois 2013 Coalition Banquet Awards Selection Committee. The theme of this year’s awards ceremony is “People Who Have Made A Difference.” This huge honor will be presented to our Stella at the Coalition for United Community Action-ORTC, Inc., 41st Annual Unity Testimonial Awards Banquet on June 7th at the Palmer House Hilton. (Whew, that’s a
mouthful!) So deserving Stella since you are someone who HAS made such a difference!! And I know you’re blogging, tweeting and Facebooking now – follow her on Twitter @Stellascolumn and on Facebook at Stella Foster – BUT I still miss reading your work in the paper! Love you and congrats AGAIN on yet another wonderful, deserving award!

Well, finally the weather is heating up making it the perfect time for PATIOS in Chicago! One of my new favorites is the downtown Rush Street location of Giordano’s Famous Chicago Pizza, located at 730 N. Rush St. Recently, Javier Colon (winner of Season 1 of “The Voice”) played at a benefit there and Tampa Bay Ray’s pitcher Matt Moore ate din-din with his family there. (They loved the stuffed version.) Other Giordano fans include Lady Gaga
and her boyfriend/“Chicago Fire” star Taylor Kinney, Justin Bieber, Bruno Mars, Channing Tatum, Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez, Taylor Lautner and many more! I can’t wait! Woot woot! And it certainly doesn’t hurt that D. Rose is now their awesome spokesperson either!

“INSPIRING FASHION” COSTUME BALL: EVERYONE WAS A STAR!

It was one of the most beautiful events I’ve attended. Every guest who came through the front door of the Chicago History Museum looked like they were stepping out of the pages of Vogue – even emcee Bill Zwecker agreed
saying, “In all of the years, I don’t think I’ve seen a more glamorous, fashionable crowd.” From the moment you entered the building, you knew you were going to witness history. Beautiful models were stationed at every turn wearing the most dramatic fashions from the legendary Ebony Fashion Fair collection. They lined the staircases, draped languorously against
the walls and modeled on pedestals set up throughout the room. It was one night where you knew you had to find your best stuff to wear. Black tie wasn’t simply a suggestion – it was a mandate and everyone
dressed to impress. Eunice Johnson’s eye was unerring and she gravitated towards the bold and dramatic, much like I suspect she was as a person. After all, one would have to be to become the trailblazer she was for the African American community. She introduced
high couture to people who wouldn’t have otherwise seen it across the country and in spectacular fashion. She utilized top models who also represented her own sensibilities…other trailblazers like Iman and Pat Cleveland, two
of the first black supermodels. Pat Cleveland attended this event and I saw her as she entered the building: It was like I was watching a film in slow motion because she didn’t really walk in…she glided. (Her swanlike neck was still the same as I remembered it in all
of the top fashion magazines.) And that dress! OMG! It was pale pink with a train that stretched forever but she didn’t seem to notice. I would’ve been screaming at people to “watch my train” – the true mark of an amateur – but not Pat: As she posed for photos, you sensed a life in front of the cameras, someone completely comfortable in her own skin. Vogue’s international editor-at-large Hamish Bowles spotted
her, too (everyone did), and rushed to her side. As they chatted about goodness knows what, flashes were going off like crazy. It was definitely a “moment,” one of many for this fashion event of the season. One of
my favorite photogs, Bob Carl, was shooting this event and he told me not to miss the dramatic décor in the big tent where we would soon be dining so I headed downstairs and my breath rushed out of my body. Truly, I’ve never seen a more elegant room…all
done in shades of purple, design guru Tom Kehoe had truly outdone himself this time! From the “upside-down orchids” hung in huge squares at every table to the chandelier within a chandelier within another chandelier hanging from the
draped ceiling, you just didn’t know where to look first. As a matter of fact, when guests streamed in later, there was a huge bottleneck at the door as guests stood gaping. And this was all BEFORE I saw the amazing exhibition featuring more than 60 fashions from
the Ebony Fashion Fair! OMGoodness! Well, you’ve probably seen a lot of photos by now since I know people were posting and Instagramming like crazy while I was there and for good reason: These were some of the top pieces from the couture collection of Eunice Johnson and the Fashion Fair and they were awe inspiring in both their drama and creativity. My favorites were the Givenchy silver raffia
evening gown from 1997; the Christian Lacroix cocktail ensemble; the Jean Patou day ensemble (I would KILL for this outfit!); B Michael’s rainbow dress (he was there and so proud, and rightfully so!); Chloe by Karl Lagerfeld’s “shower dress”; Bob
Mackie’s evening ensemble with white feathers and silver beads; Henry Jackson’s black and white ball gown; and Emanuel Ungaro’s floral bridal gown from 1996. (Insert long, loving sigh here…) When guests finally sat down for dinner, emcee Bill Zwecker thanked the crowd and introduced Costume Council president Nena Ivon, who thanked the co-chairs and told an
adorable story about Tom Kehoe. She said, “We stayed within budget for our décor but Mr. Kehoe decided it wasn’t
enough, so he did more.” How cool is this guy?! When honorary chair for the event, Linda Johnson Rice, was finally introduced the standing ovation was thunderous. She was beautiful from head to toe with a twinkle in her eye that drew you in and everyone loved hearing the story behind this exhibition and how her mother put together this awe-inspiring collection. Linda also gave a shout-out to curator Joy Bivins and to
Dan Oliver saying, “He designed everything you see here – he knew my mother’s vision.” The Ebony Fashion Fair travelled across the country for 50 years raising
millions for African American charities. No one wanted the evening to end so DJs Kiss and Moss made sure guests danced, danced, danced the night away at yet another fabulous party in our Windy City…truly the FIRST city of fashion! (View more photos from this fab evening here!)

Transporting guests back to a time when all was glittering and decadent, the grand ballroom of the Four Seasons was decked out in Roaring Twenties décor for the Face the Future Foundation’s gala “Flappers, Fedoras and All That Jazz: A Night on the Toddlin' Town.” Guests
channeled the fashion sensibilities of the decade with gals in beaded headpieces, lace and fringed dresses adorned with long strands of pearls while guys sported fedoras and bow ties. Two massive Art Deco vases filled with white ostrich plumes graced the entrance of the foyer. Co-chairs Mary Genet and
Michael Judge welcomed more than 300 guests to this elegant affair that included an extensive silent auction and “gambling” at “Jimmy’s Place Casino.” Honorary Chair Chicago Bear Israel “Izzy” Idonije arrived looking dapper as always in a black suit and white shirt topped with a fedora. Other
guests included Dr. Mimis Cohen and his wife Andrea Biel Cohen, Dr. Paula Allen-Meares, Dr. Joe "Skip" Garcia, Dr. Dimitri Azar and Dr. Enrico Benedetti. As the doors swung open at 8:00 p.m., guests oohed and ahhhed over the softly lit golden hued décor while the Stanley Paul Orchestra played the tunes of the era from the Charleston to the Foxtrot in the
background. Emcee Dr. Sandra Goldberg of NBC 5 Chicago, welcomed guests and introduced Izzy. Foundation President Gus Abello presented the President’s Award to Jim Staples for his fundraising efforts and support of the Foundation. A live auction included a Venice/Paris
excursion of 11 days/10 nights with two nights in Venice, then overnight on the Orient Express into Paris to enjoy a full week in a luxurious Paris apartment (AWESOME!); an idyllic escape to Virgin Gorda, BVI, to spend a week at the Bitter End Yacht Club (I love Dana Hokin Garvey and her fabulous family who created this
amazing oasis); a romantic getaway with a Polynesian flair to the South Pacific for a Tahitian cruise aboard the small luxury ship m/s/ Paul Gauguin; and a wine cellar with more than 100 bottles of premium wines and champagne. The item that drew particularly fierce but friendly bidding was the week in a Tuscan villa for 12 people and a private chef. The generous donor of the villa offered the three top bidders the opportunity to each enjoy their own week. The live auction raised more than $100,000 with
another $60,000 in revenue coming from the Paddle Raise. (Event proceeds topped $340,000.) Michigan Avenue Magazine was the media sponsor for this wonderful event that raises funds and public awareness to support the care and treatment of children born with cleft lip, palate and other craniofacial abnormalities. Urban Gateways’ Art for All Gala was held March 8th at City Winery Chicago and attracted more than 300 people. Many prominent Chicago business and civic leaders attended including
Kay and Jim Mabie (who served as honorary chairs for the event), Francee Harrington, Richard Dent, Eunita Rushing and an honorary/advisory committee that included
Cheryl Mayberrry McKissack and Eric McKissack, Susan and Nick Pritzker and Dawoud Bey. This enchanting, art-filled evening supported Urban Gateways, one of the largest arts service providers in the city. Programs are led by some of the city’s most
talented professional artists in music, dance, theater, literary arts, visual arts and digital media, serving 57,000 students and teachers annually. The evening included cocktails, dinner, auction prizes and live performances by Urban Gateways performing groups: 20th Century Players and Chicago Improv Productions plus a special percussion performance by high school students from an Urban Gateways after-school program, a
presentation by Urban Gateways digital media student/filmmaker Michael Coleman and a gallery of

Huge congrats to Kathleen Henson and Henson Consulting, Inc.! They were honored with THREE national public relations awards for non-profit communications account work recently at the 2013 PR News Nonprofit PR Awards luncheon at the National Press Club in
Washington, D.C. Henson Consulting, which celebrates its 12th anniversary this year, won in the high-profile Fundraising category, as well as in the areas of Event PR and PR on a Shoestring Budget. “Nothing is more gratifying than the work we do for our nonprofit
clients,” said HC founder and CEO, Kathleen Henson. “By extending the reach of some of the country’s top charities and arts institutions, both locally and nationally, we’ve had the honor and privilege of being an integral part of

March 9th was a memorable evening for fitness and health maven Shea Vaughn and the dedicated friends and supporters of her cause, Healthy Initiative. “Celebrate Yourself Healthy” took place at Germania Place with hundreds of guests to honor the cause and its mission to promote better health
practices and fight disease. The launch of Healthy Initiative started with forty participants challenged to transform themselves in 90 days with the help nutritionists, personal trainers, mentors and lifestyle regimes. For those
people, March 9th was their special day, too: Each was showcased in designs from J-Na Couture and Mark Roscoe with hair by Custom Hair Lounge and makeup by Josie Volpentesta and Brenda Arelano. The night was hosted by Jeff Conway

“Cutest Couple” alert! Please add Kyla McCarthy and Tim Smithe, Jr. to the list of high profile cuties who are tying the knot this summer! Their blow-out engagement party attracted hundreds of fun-loving friends who were thrilled to
celebrate this special occasion with these beautiful/handsome lovebirds. They will be getting married on June 1st (which is Kyla’s grandparent’s 61st wedding anniversary) in Paris where they will say their vows at the Eiffel Tower! Awwwwwww…I love this!
Their families are thrilled beyond measure! Kyla’s beloved grandparents Victoria and Jack Bazarnick have passed but Tim’s grandmother, Florence Smithe, always wears Victoria’s pendant as a way of ensuring that she is always with them. (More awwwwws!) This is a true love
story made even sweeter by this big family, as four generations of Smithes have embraced Kyla and her family in such a beautiful way. I wish this for all brides and grooms-to-be. Kyla and Tim met over a year ago at CareerBuilder and it was
love at first sight. What Tim says about Kyla: “No matter how stubborn I am, she never quits on me and my faults. I always end up seeing the other side and becoming a better person, a more well-rounded man because she is a part of my life.” Kyla on Tim: “What I love most about my fiancé is his heart. He is
able to connect with any single person on the face of this earth as long as he gets the chance to. When we talk about our future, he talks about our children as if they’re already here (we will be waiting a few years for them) and he is always smiling. It’s his kind heart, and I know it’s my job to protect it.” Their famous fathers-in-law
have hit it off, too: Walter E. Smithe’s Tim Smithe, Sr. has this to say about Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy: “What more could a father ask than to have his son find a beautiful
woman who makes his boy so very happy? Kyla is the first new Smithe girl of this generation!” Once Tim Jr. asked for Kyla’s hand in marriage, her father said, “You know how to communicate with her, you understand her and I only wish you both the very best.” A graduate of Northeastern University with a double major in clinical psychology and philosophy and with a thesis in existential psychotherapy, Kyla would be a
dream match for any smart man – I’m just so thrilled she and Tim found each other. This soon-to-be wedding celebration was

Fab-U-Wish, which made its debut online March 12th at FabUWish.org, provides young women battling breast and ovarian cancer with the opportunity to spend a day feeling
“fabulous” by living one of their wildest wishes or dreams. E! will serve as the official media partner of Fab-U-Wish. In 2011, Giuliana went through a public battle with an early stage breast cancer diagnosis, double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. During that challenging time, she relied heavily on the love and support of her husband of five years Bill
Rancic, family, close friends, colleagues, fans around the world and Bright Pink founder Lindsay Avner. However, it was the days of having her hair and make-up done at E!, putting on gorgeous designer gowns to interview celebrities on the red carpet or receiving the full Hollywood treatment that helped her feel more like a princess and less like a patient. She realized that her own special form of
“fab therapy” helped take her mind off her breast cancer battle and remain optimistic, rather than continuously focusing on her illness. “I’m grateful to be where I am today – a new mother, feeling strong and healthy and in a position to help other women now going through what I did,” said Giuliana. “Along with my friend Lindsay

Sad news to report! Former Joffrey Ballet Executive Director Christopher Clinton Conway is relocating back to Los Angeles after his eight-year tenure with the dance company. As a personal friend, I will miss him
beyond measure but know this is a great opportunity for him. I met CCC at the very first Couture & Cocktails in September 2005. His twinkling eyes and whip-smart wit made everyone want to be his friend. I was lucky to have him as a dear one for so long! He changed the Joffrey in so many
immeasurable ways and helped make it the world class company it is today. He completed its $40 million capital campaign, he doubled annual giving to the company, he rebranded and reinvigorated the Joffrey
and created unprecedented media and corporate recognition, he recruited a new artistic team after the death of beloved founder Gerald Arpino, he helped design and build the Joffrey Tower (the first permanent headquarters for the company), he helped produce the 2012 hit
documentary “Mavericks of American Dance,” he launched the “Choreographers of Color” competition in 2010, he increased the Joffrey’s subscription base by 300 percent and he launched the Young Professional’s Board in 2009, among MANY other contributions. So as you can
see, besides being a CS Man of Style and a Paul Stuart Brand Ambassador, this man worked hard to make Chicago a better place for the arts and it will
be a lesser place without him in it. The Chicago Flower & Garden Show’s preview party “Evening in Bloom” was a bloomin’ success (I know, I know!) and attracted hundreds of Chicagoans who had spring on their minds. Themed the “Art of Gardening,” this
year’s show benefitted several important charities including Chicago Gateway Green (a non-profit dedicated to greening and beautifying Chicago’s neighborhoods, gateways and expressways), the
Peterson Garden Project (a volunteer non-profit committed to teaching people how to grow their own food), the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation (a nonprofit that provides support and assistance to the families of
Chicago Police Officers killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty), the Kendall College Charitable Trust (a nonprofit dedicated to providing support for students in need who are enrolled full time in the school’s culinary, hospitality, business and education programs) and Special Olympics Chicago
(which provides year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities). The preview event showcased nearly two dozen stunning display gardens as
well as original artworks. Guests enjoyed hors d’oeuvres from Harry Caray’s, Riva Restaurant, Dirk’s Fish & Gourmet as well as sweets from Eli’s Cheesecake. Show director and president Tony Abruscato said, “This is
where patrons of the arts meet garden and environmental enthusiasts ready to paint the town green for a welcome return to spring.” Guests included Pat Brickhouse, Jim Althoff, Cathy Hull, Joanna and
Grant DePorter, artist Emmy Star Brown, Casey Schommer, Holly and Matt Murek, Amy and Jason Lundy, Allison Rosati, Rob Stafford, Sa, Griffith, Sandy and Lee Golub, Albert Bautista, Pamela Fong and Sharon Ringier among many others. The Mad Hatter’s Brunch, a fundraising event to benefit youth programming and services at the Broadway Youth Center (BYC), will be held April 7th from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the fabulous ZED451 in River North. Man-about-town Marco Foster was a man with a mission in his desire to create a successful fundraiser for One Hope United, an organization which is near and dear to his heart. On July 27th, his many friends and supporters came out in force to help Marco give back. Held at Underground, this annual event was also a celebration of Marco’s birthday with 100 percent of the proceeds going to this organization whose mission is to protect children and strengthen families in Chicago. Marco’s story is a remarkable one: After being diagnosed with a brain tumor in 2009 and having a successful surgery on Thanksgiving Day (appropriately) that same year, he has been a role model for giving back to numerous charity events throughout Chicago, especially to causes that have made a major impact on his life. Besides being an advocate for One Hope United, he also supports the American Brain Tumor Association, where he spreads the message of his experience and the importance of giving to charity. “It shouldn’t take a drastic event in one’s life to create change,” said Marco. “We all have the ability to be an instrument of change and I’m honored to have such support from the event’s co-hosts, the Underground, and the leadership from One Hope United to help pull this all off.” Co-hosts for the night included NBC multimedia journalist and five-time Emmy winner Marcus Riley, Akira Chicago owner Jon Cotay, WGN’s "Living Healthy Chicago" host Jane Monzures, PR industry pioneer and motivational speaker Chris Foltz and moi. Marco also founded the elite fashion networking group Chicago Models, as well as creating a popular social media following that is now used as a resource by hundreds in the fashion and modeling industry. Born and raised on the south side of Chicago, he has a passion for fashion and is, indeed, quite the bon vivant with an eye for style. By day, Foster is an IT guru managing the HelpDesk at Sargent & Lundy in the nuclear and fossil power plant industry. He’s a man of many talents but the ones he’s most proud of are of the charitable nature. One Hope United was founded as Chicago Baptist Orphanage in 1895 and Hudelson Baptist Children’s Home in 1903. In 1987, the two created a historic partnership evolving over the years to include foster care, clinical services and early childhood development. “I know what it’s like to get passed around from home to home and it�
�s not fun,” said Foster. And he should know since he was in foster care until the age of seven. It was a love-filled affair for a great cause hosted by a great guy! Michigan Avenue Magazine and the Chicago Yacht Club presented "A Shore Thing" at Navy Pier on July 21st. The official viewing party for the Race to Mackinac provided guests with a front row seat for the Parade of Boats at this inaugural party hosted at the tip of Navy Pier by president/publisher Dan Uslan and editor-in-chief J.P. Anderson. With an assist from supermodel/reality star Joanna Krupa, this party celebrated the 104th race. Since 1898, sailors have embarked on the 333-mile race to Mackinac Island. This Chicago Yacht Club Race, presented by Veuve Clicquot, is the oldest and most prestigious freshwater sailing race attracting some of the world's best sailors. More than 300 people converged on the legendary Drake Hotel for the fifth annual 50 & Beautiful Fashion Show, hosted by Cece & Melinda with Raymi Productions and Shaun Rajah of the Drake Hotel. “This event is about showing that beauty has no age, no race, no height or size restrictions and embracing and celebrating this fact,” said Melinda Joseph. “I am proud to be friends with these ladies. They are beautiful inside and out,” added Cece Gonzales. Fifty stylish women walked the catwalk in designs from Al Menotti, Regina Rice, Sujata Gazder, Fraley Le, Mark Roscoe and Andrea Gems. Models included Kathy O’Malley Piccone, Margaret O’Connor, Shea Vaughn, Denise Tomasello, Mable Buckner Payton, Rosemary Fanti, Kim Gleeson, Deborah Goodman, Ellen Wesley, Dorothy Whealan and Karen Williams. A reception followed in the Palm Court where guests enjoyed live entertainment by the Mike Walters Trio. (Hot DJ Madrid did the show music.) Love is definitely in the air this summer with beautiful weddings happening all around us. Starting with the popular and much loved Heather Farley and her new husband Bruce Ingram, theirs was the stuff dreams are made of! More than 200 guests convened in Lake Geneva at Bonnie Deutsch’s historic, private home which was once owned by Art Institute founding father, Martin Ryerson. The ceremony was presided over by long-time friend Judge Mary Pat Burns, followed by a reception held on the grounds in a massive tent. Heather’s father wrote a “speech” for the happy couple that he sang to the crowd amid many tears of happiness. At dusk, the largest boat on Lake Geneva – The Lady of the Lake – docked to gather guests for dessert and dancing. A DJ played hot mixes and special guest Katarina played the electric violin. Heather and Bruce enjoyed their first dance – to “Hooked on a Feeling” – and danced the night away with guests who included Mamie Walton, Kristina and Mike McGrath, Sherrill and John Bodine, Toni and Rick Canada, Nina and Bob Mariano and Lynn and John McMahan. Another magical wedding was held in Lake Forest this past weekend uniting lovely Laura Nosko and Dr. Paul Steinwald. The First Presbyterian Church was filled to the rafters with guests excited to witness the union of these much loved and much IN love people. (Paul is the son of Dr. Os Steinwald, our brother-in-law). This church is so beautiful and it was only eclipsed by the bride and her lovely bridesmaids. The reception was held on the elegant grounds of Lake Forest Academy with the sit-down dinner for 250 held in the marble halls of the historic Armour House. Chicago Gateway Green, along with its sponsoring presenter and longtime Expressway Program Partner Horseshoe Casino, hosted their seventh annual Gaming for Green, a popular poker tournament and casino night held on July 12th at Galleria Marchetti. Hosted by Roe Conn and Richard Roeper of “Roe and Roeper” on WLS 890AM, the event raised $35,000 for Chicago Gateway Green’s Tree Partnership Program. This program is a large-scale volunteer tree planting initiative that transforms vacant land across

City Winery Chicago is hosting a preview party to benefit arts education non-profit Urban Gateways on Saturday, August 11th from 7 to 10 p.m. This fundraiser will be the public’s first chance to experience the new 33,000-square-foot wine, food and music venue in Chicago’s West Loop. (It officially opens on August 15th with five nights of performances by comedian Lewis Black.) Saw Denzel Washington's beautiful wife, Pauletta, at dinner at Bijan recently with makeup/style gurus Reggie Wells (Oprah’s longtime makeup artist) and George Fuller. Plans are in the works for a reality show about making everyday people on the street look fabulous with a makeover – I think the working title will be “Finding Fabulous.” These two guys could make Godzilla look great so I can't wait to see what they've cooked up!! On a sad note, I CANNOT believe I won’t be able to read Stella Foster’s column in the Sun-Times anymore!?!?!?! This wonderful reporter gave a voice to the voiceless, love to her friends and always, Always, ALWAYS told it like it is! On Saturday, Operation PUSH has proclaimed “Stella Foster Day” in Chicago at their headquarters at 930 E. 50th starting at 10 a.m. Her fans are legion and I can’t imagine the mail her paper must be receiving. And believe me, this is the first of many events that will be planned in her honor. I can’t wait to participate. “I am overwhelmed by the love and support from my readers and the dignitaries in this town,” said Miss Stella. You ain’t seen nothin’ yet! We love you, Stella!

FASHION COLUMBIA 2012: BIGGEST, GREENEST AND RECORD BREAKING!

Fashion Columbia 2012 raised record funds, was the greenest fundraiser and was largest event at the college to date! Proceeds from the event, which brought out over 200 guests, will benefit the Eunice W. Johnson Scholarship in Fashion Studies. All of this good news must’ve made event chair Desiree Rogers very, very happy along with her glam Host Committee that consisted of Trish Rooney Alden, Madeleine Burrell, Gwendolyn Butler, Bonita Chapman, Nora Daley, Janice Barnes Davis, Susan Downing, Elissa Hamid Efroymson, Rich Gamble, Ikram Goldman, Mary Lou Haddad, Mellody Hobson, Susie Kiphart, Julie Latsko, Sylvia Neil, Diane Primo, MK Pritzker, Shawnelle Ritchie, Lynne Turner and Allison Grant Williams. The event at the Media Production Center at 16th and State Streets opened with a red carpet which led to models wearing a selection of vintage pieces from fashion icon, Eunice Johnson’s Fashion Fair Collection. For the main event, 15 fashion studies students showcased 45 designs that included menswear, evening gowns and dresses. The models wore Fashion Fair cosmetics, of course, from the company founded by Eunice Johnson. Desiree had this to say: “Many of the designs intrigued me and I would have purchased them that evening. I could not help but think of how happy Eunice Johnson would have been to see such talent. It was a magical evening.” During the program, Lana Jewelry founder Lana Bramlette was awarded the Alumni Achievement in Fashion Design Award by VP of Institutional Advancement, Eric Winston. Lana is known as the “Queen of Hoops,” with her jewelry adorning celebs like Jennifer Lopez, Kate Hudson, Angelina Jolie and Cameron Diaz, to name a few. A host committee dinner, rooftop reception, VIP lounge and after-party all completed this fabulous night of fashion that raised more than $70,000. Event sponsors included Macy’s and Mercedes-Benz. Live auction packages raised an additional $16K and included a fur donated by Fabbri Furs and a travel package to New York Fashion Week. As for the green aspect, the organizers recycled all post-event paper and other products, even composting food scraps! The Joffrey Ballet’s 10th Anniversary Celebration of its Women’s Board continued with a Costume Luncheon held recently at the Ritz Carlton. Joffrey trainees modeled historic ballet costumes from its archives displaying the wonderful cross section, variety and depth of the collection. Besides the costumes, more than 200 guests also enjoyed beautifully decorated tables by Drew Holitik with mounds of flowers spilling out of Joffrey hat boxes and a luncheon menu that featured spring pea soup, followed by grilled chicken salad and ending with a chocolate Pot de Crème – elegant and yummy all at the same time! The 10th Anniversary Chair, Maureen Smith, introduced her long-time friend, Tina Sloan (a well-known actress from her time on “Guiding Light” and the author of “Changing Shoes”), who delivered a hysterical presentation of her one-woman show based on her book and life experiences including her role in the Academy Award- winning film, “Black Swan.” Executive Director Christopher Clinton Conway (who could definitely have his own stand-up comedy show) then introduced Artistic Director Ashley Wheater, who thanked everyone for coming. The chairwomen for the event were Sophie Bross, Liz Ryan, Jennifer Litowitz and Maggie Scheyer with Nena Ivon (Chicago History Museum president and former fashion director of Saks on Michigan Avenue) serving as honorary chair. More than $50K will go towards supporting the Joffrey’s programs and performances as well as providing funds for the Costume Project, whose capable and devoted chair is Lisa Leiden. Seen on the scene were Helen Melchior, Kathleen Klaeser, Dusty Stemer, Tina Weller, Sherren Leigh, Amelia Silva, Leslie Hindman, Suzette Bulley, Jamee Field, Liz Adams, Mary Jo Basler, Sandy Deromedi, Astra Gamsjaeger, Yolanda Tyler, Jim Karas, Shelley Farley, Shauna Montgomery and Marci Holzer among many others. More than 250 Russian nationals and Americans joined together to celebrate Russia Day at a black-tie gala at the Chicago Cultural Center on June 14th. Hosted by the Moscow Committee of Chicago Sister Cities International, chaired by the dynamic Aleksandra Efimova and Prince Piotr Galitzine, the event honored Russia’s national holiday, which is celebrated on June 12th and commemorates the day in 1990 when the Russian Parliament formally declared sovereignty over Russia. This is only the second year that Russia Day has been celebrated in Chicago and the first year the event included a black-tie gala. The evening began with Sergey Kislyak, the Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the U.S., giving the keynote speech highlighting the importance of strengthening the relationships between the U.S. and Russia and focusing on the similarities between Chicago and Moscow. Other speakers included Prince Galitzine, the chairman of TMK IPSCO (a Russian company with offices in Downers Grove); Alexander Tseitline, VP of technology and research of NLMK USA (the U.S. arm of a Russian-owned steel company); and Mike Rehwinkel, president and CEO of EVRAZ North America. In addition to the speeches, the evening included a dinner featuring authentic Russian food, as well as performances by the Campanella Children’s Choir, the Joffrey Ballet, the Lyric Opera of Chicago’s Ryan Opera Center and 75 members of the Chicago Master Singers, who will be traveling to St. Petersburg at the end of June. The Moscow Committee presented donations to the Children’s Choir as well as to several WWII vets from both the Russian and American sides. “I truly hope Russia Day encourages people of all countries to see the commonalities between each other and fosters collaboration among Russians and Americans to promote peace and economic growth,” Ms. Efimova said. Since its inception in 1960, Chicago Sister Cities International has built bridges between the people of Chicago and its international neighbors to achieve greater mutual understanding and to strengthen civic, economic and cultural ties. (Chicago has been a sister city with Moscow since 1997.) To conclude Russia Day 2012, Aleksandra and the Russian Federal Agency for the Commonwealth hosted a children’s story time that featured Aleksandra’s Russian translated books and toys. The Service Club of Chicago is hosting its annual Day on the Terrace Fashion Show and Luncheon at the Peninsula on Monday, July 30th. This year’s luncheon will have a Parisian theme – “C’est Magnifique in Couture & Contemporary Fashion” - and feature the fall collections from Escada, Intermix, Ralph Lauren, Starr Couture, Neapolitan, Lulu’s at the Belle-Kay, Burdi, Thomas James, Stuart Weitzman and a presentation of evening wear and furs by Neiman Marcus. Fashion show co-chairs Jean Antoniou, Tracey DiBuono and Saira Cooper along with Chair Emeritus Hazel Barr guarantee a show-stopping fashion extravaganza with some surprises planned, as always! The Cocktail Reception will begin on the Terrace at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the Fashion Show at 11:45 a.m. and a luncheon at 12:30 p.m. Tickets are $175 with all proceeds benefitting the Club’s supplemental grant program. Fashion, art, music and dance came together on June 15th at the Stan Mansion for the Victorian Ball in the 21st Century. Founder Laura Elvis created one of the most intriguing events of the summer with proceeds, this year, benefitting Chicago Lost and Found and their efforts to raise funds for art education. This year’s star performers included the Joffrey Ballet’s Abigail Simon and Mauro Villanueva and Miss Chicago Marisa Buchheit. The event was emceed by WGN’s Jane Monzures with a red carpet hosted by HGTV’s design star (and all around cute guy) Kevin Grace. The Ball was produced by the handsome and talented Benjamin Cottrell with photos by Kirsten Miccoli and custom designed looks by Anna G. Costumes. It takes a village to have a successful event and Laura Elvis – along with event contributors Shari Duffy, Cera Stan, Ramsey Prince and April Padilla – pulled it off! Congrats to all!

A beautiful baby shower was hosted at the Casino Club recently by glam soon-to-be-grandma, Lynn McMahan for her only daughter, Nicole Brown. Thirty lucky ladies mixed and mingled amidst the elegance of a room dressed in shades of blue for Baby Boy Brown, who is due in September. Designer Tom Kehoe and Lynn planned beautiful table décor that included oversized floral arrangements of blue (naturally!) hydrangeas, New Zealand tea tree blossoms, white stock, purple hyacinths and baby roses with children’s alphabet blocks scattered across the pale blue tablecloths. In a word: BREATHTAKING! Lynn gave a heartfelt and loving tribute to Nicole and after both of their eyes cleared from tears, Lynn asked Rebecca Besser to say a few words. Rebecca emphasized being consistent, not ever be afraid to tell your children that you love them and to savor every moment. Hazel Barr spoke next, commenting that she has raised “three children, five grandchildren and half the neighborhood!” She went on to say, “You will feel a degree of love that you never thought you would have and like most things in life, you learn on the job.” (She also joked that “having children makes you no more of a parent than having a piano makes you a pianist.”) It was a true love fest for Lynn and Nicole and I couldn’t be happier for them or prouder to have been included! Seen in the elegant room were Michaela Parrillo, Toni Canada, Kristina McGrath, Jan Flanagan, Hedwig Golant, Dede Lubeznik, Gail Leahy, Sherrill Bodine, Lynda Silverman, Susan Gohl and Averill Leviton among others. The reception and dinner followed at Gibson’s, where Steve Lombardo and John Colletti outdid themselves to ensure that Alison and Josh were happy as clams! Popular crooner Tony Ocean sang for the wedding party that included Zack Edwards (best man) and Kanika Rankin (maid of honor). The Shannon Rovers even led the couple into the room – how’s THAT for cool?! Guests included proud papa Ed Howlett, Mr. and Mrs. Vinnie Mehta, Senator Howard Carroll and wife Eda, Judge William Bauer and wife Patty, Alison’s mom Lynn Cialdella and grandma Helen Howlett, Judge Mike Howlett and wife Kathy, Helen Cashman and family, Senator Jim Deleo, Mr. and Mrs. Tom Allison, Mr. and Mrs. Al Childress (Alison’s aunt), Roxanne Holloway (Josh’s mom) and John Walters (Josh’s dad) among many others. Mark your calendars now for The White Party set for Friday, July 27th, from 9 to 11 p.m. at Underground Chicago, located at 56 W. Illinois. Last year, beloved man-about-town Marco Foster planned this benefit for One Hope United around his birthday so it was a dual celebration. This charity helps abused children as well as foster kids and their parents and since Marco was a foster child himself, this event is very near and dear to his heart. Marco said, “I know what it’s like to get passed around from home to home and it’s not fun. REDMOON’S SPECTACLE LUNATIQUE IS A MOVEABLE FEAST

…COSTUME COUNCIL HOSTS HAL RUBENSTEIN, FACE THE FUTURE FOUNDATION GALA, THE BEST FRENCH TEACHER, HORACIO NIETO PRESENTS, WATCH312’S VIP CLUB PLUS ANOTHER NEW VIDEO AND MORE!

I have been to quite a few galas and fundraisers in my day, but never have I seen such a visual feast like Redmoon Theater’s “Spectacle Lunatique” at the Hudson Club on March 17th. Everywhere you looked, there was something to delight your senses. Theater members and volunteers were riding bicycles dressed in exotic garb serving cosmos from teakettles! Giant colorful balloons would surprise you around corners and you saw people sleeping in flying and twirling bathtubs, a guy scribbling in an ancient notebook high atop a burned-out Victorian room, people dressed as huge birds on 20-foot-long flying bicycles…I tell ya, I thought I had seen just about everything until this gala night – it was surreal! One guest described it as “being right out of a Fellini movie” and I couldn’t agree more! From the very start, upon entering the venue (which truly used to be an old Hudson car dealership), the excitement began with at least 50 theater members forming a gauntlet for guests. As you walked through the gauntlet, wild applause began as if you were an actor receiving accolades. And they did this for EVERY SINGLE GUEST! All through the night, I could hear the applause and it brought a smile to my face. I could imagine some needy guests going in and out multiple times just to hear the applause! It was so cool! The VIP reception, which started earlier than the actual event, began in the front of the venue near its 2222 S. Michigan address. (Guests actually entered from the rear on Wabash since the food trucks were all accessed from there.) The reception, designed in part by the dynamic HGTV star Kevin Grace, was loaded with fantastic and fantastical food stations. The VIP Lounge chefs included David Posey (Blackbird), Efrain Cuevas (Clandestino Supper Club), Valerie Bolon (Culinary Speakeasy), Jeff Pikus (Maude’s Liquor Bar), Jason Vincent (Nightwood), Duncan Biddulph (Rootstock) and Joshua Kulp (Sunday Dinner Club). Food trucks were well represented with the Brown Bag Lunch Truck, Chicago Schnitzel King, Tamale Spaceship, Wagyu Wagon, Curry Cruiser and Hummingbird Kitchen offering up delicious dishes. Delicious desserts were prepared and served by emerging pastry students from the French Pastry School. After the VIP reception, guests were directed into the next room, the aptly-named Spectacle Hall, for a unique fundraising “ask.” Theater members were gathered onstage and began singing for donations…an opera singer would sing out the amount and then the rest of the group would sing a refrain. It was one of the most clever ways to ask for money that I’ve seen in a long time and it must’ve been effective since I saw people waving and raising their hands all over the room! After this unique display, there was a digital countdown to the main event which, in and of itself, made the room hum with expectant excitement. And then the machines were started up and the pageantry began in earnest. All sorts of wild displays of imagination began their turn around the venue and all the while, there were surprising games, smaller displays and a silent auction positioned all around the edges of the room. I felt like I had fallen down the rabbit hole and I didn’t know where to look first! Guests must’ve drained their iPhone capacities capturing it all on their cameras! From 10:30 p.m. until dawn, the space became a huge dance party with more food catered by friends of Redmoon including Manny’s Deli. Redmoon’s directors Jim Lasko and Frank Maugeri said that “this night’s gala was a first step towards a new large-scale public spectacle that Redmoon is planning to build using the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice as a point of departure. We will be performing installments of the piece in high-traffic public venues which will be guerrilla-style, pre-announced, promoted and curated affairs. Some will be brief parades exploring a single contraption. Others may be 15-minute-long performances focused on a narrative event.” Proceeds from this gala will directly fund Redmoon’s artistic mission of community building through the company’s award-winning Neighborhood Arts Programming, public art events and a fraction of the costs associated with running an internationally touring, Chicago-centric not-for-profit arts organization. Fascinating stories of fashion from the man who knows, Hal Rubenstein, was the order of the day at the recent Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum event hosted by Susanna Negovan, editor of (as if you didn’t know!) Michigan Avenue Magazine. Rubenstein, fashion director of InStyle magazine and author of “100 Unforgettable Dresses” delighted the Casino crowd with insightful stories of some of the most unforgettable dresses and the women who wore them. He shared stories of gowns worn by celebrity icons including the “revenge dress” worn by Princess Diana the night Prince Charles announced his affair with Camilla Parker-Bowles, Elizabeth Hurley’s Gianni Versace “safety-pin” gown worn at the world premiere of “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (which, not surprisingly, was also the night that launched her career), Audrey Hepburn’s long-standing devotion to designer Hubert de Givenchy, and the unforgettable gown worn by Marilyn Monroe as she sang “Happy Birthday” to President John F. Kennedy. This event was the first in a series of events planned that will feature high-profile fashion personalities and included a sellout crowd of more than 140 fashion-savvy guests. Costume Council President Nena Ivon, along with luncheon co-hosts, Toni Canada and Dusty Stemer, outdid themselves! Guests also enjoyed lunch and a book signing. Luncheon sponsors included Debi Lilly of A Perfect Event (who donated the flowers) and Greg Hyder (The Peninsula provided guest accommodations). It was a “Night on the Orient Express” for the lucky 325 attendees to this year’s Face the Future Foundation Gala co-chaired by Andrea Cohen and Mary Ann Rose. At the top of the grand staircase of the Four Seasons Hotel, a train engine and railcar slowly made its way around a circular track. Every so often the car stopped and guests hopped on for photo ops. As the crowd sipp
ed cocktails and nibbled on hors d’oeuvres, they perused the extensive silent auction which included items ranging from luxury to sports packages. Dinner and a brief program followed presented by Dr. Mimis Cohen, director of the Craniofacial Center at UICM, and Gus Abello, president of the Foundation. Awards were given to Alisa Bloom, Christine Cantalupo and Melissa Kelz Ben-Yoseph for their work to further the efforts of the Foundation. This dynamic trio chaired last year’s gala while Christine and Melissa were expecting and Alisa was in the middle of a total home renovation. Now THAT’s dedication! The live auction followed, with the top prize raking in $155K for a trip to the Italian Villa located in the Chianti wine region just outside of Florence. The Face the Future Foundation was established to help children face the future by funding some of the costs associated with craniofacial treatment. The Foundation is largely supported by the doctors, nurses and other specialists at the Craniofacial Center at the University of Illinois Chicago. TICKLED PINK TO SUPPORT Y-ME!

The River East Art Center was the perfect venue for this much loved event that grows by leaps and bounds year after year! This party with a purpose benefitted the Y-Me Breast Cancer Organization and brought out more than 900 supporters for the seventh annual Tickled Pink charity bash on February 24th. Hosted by the newly formed Y-Me Auxiliary Board, this event brought together the young and young-at-heart for a roof raising party that broke attendance records and raised more than $50,000. Guests sipped on delicious cocktails including the famous Tickled Pink-tini and dined on hors d’oeuvres from Paramount Events, Purple Pig, Heaven on Seven, Terzo Piano, IPO, Bon Appetit, Phoebe’s Desserts, Rivers Casino and Homerun Inn Pizza along with sushi from Macku. Partygoers had the opportunity to schmooze with Chicago celebs and local media who served as guest bartenders and helped fundraise at the event by selling pink boas, beads and raffle tickets. The dance floor was the place to be, if you could find a spot! The Hat Guys encouraged guests to sing and dance along to their inspired New Orleans sounds while Fig Media’s DJ Sarumi kept the crowd dancing into the wee hours with his hot club mixes. It was definitely the place to see and be seen for the younger set in search of new friends! M Street Kitchen and Stella Rossa Pizza Bar in Santa Monica were the places to be for the 25th anniversary of Windy City West! This popular culinary event attracted more than 500 talented Chicagoans from film, television and music for a celebration of food, fun and friendship. I hated to miss the Center on Halsted’s annual Oscar party this year but I know it was another runaway success! A sell-out crowd of more than 400 guests brought glitz and glamour to the Park West for this year’s show which was broadcast on three giant movie screens. The night also included a full buffet courtesy of The Entertaining Company, cocktails and champagne. Adding to the festive atmosphere, attendees were interviewed on the red carpet by Precious Jewel, which was aired live via closed-circuit TV courtesy of Mini of Chicago. The Nielsen Company served as presenting sponsor for the second year in a row. All told, Center on Halsted raised a record $70K for their programs and services through ticket sales, a silent auction, a raffle and corporate sponsorships. “Our tremendous success shows the support the people, companies and institutions of Chicago have for our Center,” said CEO Modesto Tico Valle. “The money raised will go directly back to building and strengthening the LGBT community through the diverse programs offered daily at Center on Halsted.” (Photos by Anthony Meade…to view more pics, please click here!)

I thought her grandmother, Princess Grace of Monaco, was one of the most beautiful women in the world and I think her mother, Princess Caroline, has the same lovely features but no one has the looks of global IT girl, Princess Charlotte Casiraghi. Charlotte is the new face of Gucci and, boy, what a smart move this was! Gucci’s latest campaign, shot by Peter Lindbergh, shows Charlotte in one of her favorite spots: with her horse in its stable against a backdrop of hay. She is a natural beauty that this Italian fashion house was wise to snare. Besides the commercial presence, she will also star in their Forever Now campaign series conceived by creative director Frida Giannini in collaboration with Charlotte herself. Over the next two years, the young royal will be photographed by four of the world’s top photographers in photos celebrating the brand’s icons. The video is breathtaking like the lady herself…

Photographer Steve Starr’s trip to the Oscar’s proved to be a veritable treasure trove of photo ops! He seemed to be everywhere at once! I loved the shot of him near the massive Oscar sign. OSCAR FUN AND FASHION AT THE GENE SISKEL FILM CENTER!

The red carpet beckoned at the Gene Siskel Film Center for the only Academy Awards show in Chicago sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Movie lovers came dressed to the nines on this night, many inspired by some of the nominated films. Host Amanda Puck was dressed in black and white from her favorite shop, Space 519, in honor of “The Artist” and guest Allan Caliman did the same and won “The Artist Look Alike” award on this night! Other inspired winners included Renny Rhanna for “Marilyn Monroe Look Alike,” Jenna Plakut and Matthew Sullivan for “Power Couple,” Mila Samokhina for “Best Dressed Paparazzi,” Chris O’Dea for “Best Dressed Man,” Monika Rydz for “Best Dressed Woman,” Elena Samokhina for “Jessica Chastain Look Alike,” Jamie Sterle for “Zooey Deschanel Look Alike” and Emile Sile for “Morgan Freeman Look Alike.” It was a happy crowd with everyone hoping their favorites would win. The buffet dinner – generously donated by MJ Catering – also gave a nod to the theme of the evening: Each dish was inspired by a film! There was Hawaiian salmon (“The Descendants”), thyme beef encroute (“Hugo”), roasted veggies (“Tree of Life”), southern style potato gratin (“The Help”) and asparagus and gruyere tart (“Midnight in Paris”). I loved seeing the movie going crowd so excited and it was contagious. I had my own personal favorites and they included “Hugo,” “Midnight in Paris” and “The Artist” and Chuck’s favorite was “Moneyball.” We both laughed so hard over “Bridesmaids” that it was ridiculous…actually, why don’t more comedies get nominated? I think we should be throwing a little love their way right about now. And I have to say, as I watched the actual awards ceremony in one of the two state-of-the-art theaters where the 84th Annual Academy Awards show was presented courtesy of ABC7 Chicago, that I had some other thoughts. First of all, we all get it…Angelina is gorgeous but that leg-throwing thing really disappointed me. This is a woman who should NOT be trying this hard. And, as Stella Foster so aptly put it in the Sun-Times, “Angelina Jolie was elegant in black, but she could have kept that boney leg under wraps.” I love Stella, always telling it like it is! And now, here are my highlights: I loved Jennifer Lopez and Cameron Diaz’s booty shot when they were presenting…too awesome and both glam, glam, glam! I loved both the gowns but Diaz’s won in my opinion. When she came out to present and those feathers were flying in all the right places, I was thrilled for her. I loved Billy Crystal from beginning to end. I am tired of nastiness, not only at awards shows but anywhere – life is hard enough…let’s try to be nice to each other! Funny can be nice, as Billy has proven time and time again; I loved his comment about being in a theatre (“These are the places to laugh, to cry and to text.”), his comment about being at the “beautiful Chapter 11 Theatre…” and finally, “We have puppets and acrobats…we’re a pony away from being a bar mitzvah.” Gene Siskel Film Center Executive Director Jean de St. Aubin said, “As Chicago’s premiere movie theater, we look forward every year to hosting the official Oscar party to celebrate achievements in film. We’re thrilled to be sold out again and the crowd is so glamorous…it rivals the real red carpet.” Associate Director of Development Joel Mangers had this to say about the event: “Fun, sexy…everybody is having a great time! It’s the most fun you can have outside of Hollywood!” I thought it was interesting, too, that the last baseball film nominated was “Field of Dreams.” I loved “Moneyball” (probably for all the wrong reasons!) and who could believe Sandra Bullock could speak German Mandarin Chinese??!! Penelope Cruz was perfect from head to toe, as usual. I’m thrilled Meryl Streep won – 17 nominations and now three wins – and isn’t it refreshing that she is still so humble? I loved her speech and loved the fact that her first shout-out was to her beloved husband, Don Gummer, to whom she has been married for 34 years. I also loved the Cirque du Soleil performance, although I think it was much more impactful in the theater than on TV as the standing ovation proved. It was a real treat to cover this night at the Gene Siskel Film Center for my show, “Candid Candace Chicago,” on Watch312.com. We have the greatest crew and I want

PAWS Chicago’s Animal Magnetism Party attracted a fun-loving and fur-filled crowd of more than 300 people and 80 pets to their sixth annual event at Galleria Marchetti on February 17th. The evening was hosted by KISS FM’s Brotha Fred and Angi Taylor and included dinner, dancing, photo ops and a one-of-a-kind live and silent auction. Highlights included the chance to fly a military aircraft under the guidance of an expert instructor. The aircraft was the North American SNJ-5, the Navy version of the T-6, which trained almost every allied fighter pilot during WWII and into the Korean War. This amazing package sold for only $550!!! Four premium seats for a Cubs game three rows behind first base included a party bus to the game and sold for only $600. (Now you see another reason why you should be coming to these events: great auction deals!) A trip to NY with two VIP tickets to “The Late Show with Jimmy Fallon” sold for $2,450. During the evening, Petco Foundation was honored for its extraordinary donations to PAWS Chicago’s Pet Food Bank and the GusMobile. This medical van visits Chicago’s low income communities offering free spay/neuter services as well as medical care. PAWS will save 4,500 homeless cats and dogs this year and spay or neuter more than 18,000 pets, the majority free for families who can’t afford this on their own. “It is so inspiring to see so many young professionals, passionate about helping Chicago’s homeless animals,” said PAWS founder Paula Fasseas. Guests seen on the scene included Paul Earle and Ellen Rudnick, Hank, Anne and Haleigh Bernbaum, Neal Lenhoff (who generously donated $2K during the Bid to Save Lives), Andrew Pitt, Kim Gleeson, Richard Doermer, Lindsay Walter, Chris Carlton, Dr. Steve Stryker and Andrea Schwartz. I was thrilled to be a part of the recent Success is a Journey seminar hosted by JMP Global’s Monika Dixon, Jennifer Christianson and Patrycja Drozdek at Hotel 71. The room was packed with more than 200 guests interested in hearing about the success and personal development of the panelists who included keynote speaker James Tarantino, FanFueled’s Anderson Bell, Boka Group’s Kevin Boehm and fitness expert Andrea Metcalf. Monika Dixon said, “Success is not a destination…it is a journey. This understanding comes when something happens in your life that shakes up the very core of your being. Our panelists discussed what it took and the moment that kept them motivated. Lots of fun events coming up! You won’t want to miss the Red Pump Project on Saturday, March 24th at the Society Art Gallery at 2140 W. Fulton St. from 6 to 9 p.m. This event will be held in honor of National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day and will feature Kim Coles, actress, comedian and motivational speaker. This is the third annual Rock the Red Fashion Show, showcasing up and coming designers from around Chicago. So ladies, prepare to rock your red pumps and fellas, rock your red ties to bring attention and awareness to the impact that HIV/AIDS has on women and girls. Awareness is always in style!

The Chicago Fashion Foundation is hosting its annual scholarship event on Wednesday, March 7th at the Chicago Cultural Center, located at 78 E. Washington from 6 to 9 p.m. “Street Style: Chicago Fashion through Chicago Communities” will showcase the work of 10 local fashion students who will present looks representative of the signature street style of Chicago’s neighborhoods including Rogers Park, Chinatown, Andersonville and Ukrainian Village. The event will start with a cocktail reception in Preston Bradley Hall followed by the fashion show with three scholarships being awarded in the amounts of $500, $1,000 and $5,000. I am thrilled to be a judge along with the always-darling Peach Carr (“Project Runway”), Jon Cotay (Akira founder), Catie Keogh (NBC’s “24/7”), Andrea Schwartz (Macy’s) and Diego Rocha (“Project Accessory”). E-Drop Off’s Corri McFadden will be the emcee for the evening. After the runway show, former winners will debut their spring collections while Too Faced Cosmetics recreates the runway beauty looks from the evening. Tickets are $25 for students, $35 for general admission and $55 for VIP (which includes a gift bag). Hope to see you all there! Please join me for the 2012 Bear Tie Ball benefitting Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation on Saturday, March 10th. This is always a wonderful event for a great cause and I hope you will all come! The event is called Rhythm for a Reason and that means they’re “gonna rattle the walls, shake a leg, and come together to make a difference in the lives of children and families battling pediatric cancer.” The night will begin at 6 p.m. at the UIC Forum with beloved co-chairs Nina Mariano and Tracy Scurto. Only two conventional grocers have successfully gone public in the past 15 years – Dominick’s and Roundy’s – both of which were lead by the same CEO, Bob Mariano! Congrats, Nina and Bob! P.S. I was so happy to attend the most incredible baby birthday party! Everyone I know was at Saddle & Cycle recently to toast Jackson Mackey’s first birthday.
