My first blog August 25 2008.

My first blog, August 25, 2008.

Dearest blog readers, This month, Candid Candace celebrates 13 years of delivering the best that Chicago has to offer. Thank you for supporting me since 2008! I feel the best is yet to come for all of us. Even though the past year has been one hot mess, I see great change on the horizon. For friends who have asked if they should consider leaving town, I say no, give it another chance. Even though crime is off the charts, I think we can at least celebrate being together again, planning weddings, seeing family and friends and smothering them with hugs and kisses. Since most of us are vaccinated, we can truly celebrate summer in the city with a sense of freedom that is palpable after our 15 months of hibernation, which already seems like a thing of the past. You can feel it in every corner of the city as people stretch their wings to fly again. Here's to soaring to great new heights together, FINALLY, and also to a very memorable, fun-filled fall.

Service Club's "Day on the Terrace" co-chairs Tracey Tarantino, Jean Antoniou and Sharyl Mackey with event sponsor/friend Tom Kehoe.

The Service Club of Chicago hosted its annual Day on the Terrace fashion show/fundraiser Monday, August 2 at The Geraghty (2520 S. Hoyne). The event, this year themed "Here Comes the Sun," is always a labor of love that culminates after a long year of planning. The committee is always so supportive as is the Service Club's vibrant Auxiliary Board who planned a first-time after-party for this year's event (more on this later). The fundraiser was co-chaired by Jean Antoniou, Tracey Tarantino DiBuono and Sharyl Mackey with the leading sponsors and event producers being The Geraghty, Kehoe Designs, Black Oak Technical Productions and, of course, the one

and only Tom Kehoe (who always makes EVERY EVENT look so good!) The fashion show, as always, was expertly produced by ZZAZZ Productions and, so far, is

Nearly 300 attendees enjoyed a first look at fall fashion from retailers and designers that included Elda de la Rosa Couture, Sylwia Designs, Lauren Lein, Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenue (the finale segment), Anne Fontaine, Ted Baker, CRAM Fashion, Max Mara, alice + olivia, Contessa Bottega, Mira Couture, Maximilian Chicago, Peter Millar, Penny's from Heaven (kids) and St. John. I loved seeing all of these philanthropic ladies together again and thoroughly enjoyed my views from backstage of this incredible, 45-minute long fashion show. I have to say, it was really one of my favorites….all of the women

Some of the standouts (in my humble opinion) included Liz Teasley, wearing a dramatic red evening gown by Sylwia Designs; Mary Lasky and Darby Hills toasting with bedazzled go-cups as they walked together down the runway; Israel Idonije wearing Peter Millar (and a killer smile); NBC Chicago co-hosts Matt Rodrigues and

The International Playboy Bunny Reunion was held at The Drake with Bunnies from around the world in attendance.

As you all probably know, I owe a great deal to Playboy and Hugh Hefner, who literally brought me to Chicago and ultimately, to all of you. I am forever grateful and indebted to

this amazing man who I still miss and always will. I IMG_9272welcome any chance to revisit my Playboy family and former Bunny Diana Petersen made it happen for so many of us recently, in very grand style. Nearly 300 Bunnies from around the world convened in Chicago for the International Playboy Bunny Reunion which also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the first Playboy Club. Diana had planned a 4-day long series of events that included a Guys & Dolls party with a Gatsby

fireworks cruise and brunch at the popular Rosebud Restaurant. The celebration culminated with a dressy dinner at the Drake Hotel on Sunday. I reconnected with Bunnies I hadn't seen in nearly 50 years. I had worked first at the St. Louis Playboy Club in 1973 with friends that included Marsha Callender, Patti McGuire Connors, IMG_9283Janis Schmitt, Rhetta Penninger and so many more. I saw a few of these St. Louis Bunnies here in Chicago. From my Chicago Playboy Club days, there was a better representation that IMG_9352 included Judi Kalata Altiere, Angie Chester, Cindy Fossen Russell, Nancy Perry, Susan Stone, Candy Hockenberry, Eddie Cook, Anna D'Agata, Cheryl Carioscia, Rita……and others. The first of these events was a meet-and-greet which took place at the Knickerbocker Hotel. As you may or may not know, this was the location of the second Playboy Club following the original one at 116 E. Walton. Its final incarnation in Chicago was in Lincoln Park (in the old Four

Torches building). To be honest, I was hesitant to go. None of us are getting any younger and I really loved remembering everyone the way they were, darling faces and figures in a variety of colorful, iconic Bunny costumes 214625087_4367825173263621_1709824112094481413_n but my curiosity got the better of me and off I went. THANK GOODNESS! I felt like I'd gone home again. Yes, we were all a little older but I could still see those cute faces and dazzling personalities that got them hired at the Clubs in the first place and I was back in the "hutch" with my friends again. Organizer Diana Peterson did a great job, even offering Playboy memorabilia for sale, many items she had created herself, like pillows with the girls' Bunny photos, sparkling rhinestone Bunny necklaces, cuff-links, costume cuffs,

earrings, pins, masks and even Bunny ears of every stripe and color. She had also created "standees" of the

girls' Bunny photos that were scattered throughout the room and hanging from banners from the second floor mezzanine railing. We were ensconced in all things Playboy and I couldn't have loved it more. (A friend of mine, Shelley Rosen, Luxe Bloom, even created a standing arrangement of specially treated roses with the Playboy logo which was a popular photo opp.) These ladies

were the sorority I never had and, as an only child, also IMG_9093 the sisters I never had. The final event of the weekend took place in the elegant Gold Coast Room at the Drake and boy oh boy, it was so expertly planned right down to the magnificent floral arrangements on the tables to the giant black Playboy bunny logo statue that served as the focal point of the cocktail reception. An amazing array of rare Playboy memorabilia was on display in a silent auction with the live auction featuring two original Bunny costumes. Even Christie Hefner attended and delivered such a heartfelt speech. (Watch it here). The ladies danced and mingled throughout the magical evening. Thanks, as always Hef, for giving me a forever family. And thanks to you Diana Peterson for making it all possible!

I've been involved with this amazing organization for the last 20 years and have watched them grow and Grow and GROW until they are now one of the highest rated nonprofits on Charity Navigator. Since PAWS' founding in 1997, Chicago has seen a 91% decrease in the number of homeless pets killed and, last year, PAWS found forever homes for over 4,000 dogs and cats. Kudos to all who support this great rescue and to its founders, Paula and her daughter Alexis.

"Fishing at the Jetty" program on the Riverwalk.

Who knew you could fish off the Riverwalk? Chicago Park District's FREE "Fishing at the Jetty" program provides fishing opportunities, weekly afternoon fishing clinics and interactive activities for everyone! Fishing rods, bait and all the supplies needed for a big catch are provided. Never tried fishing before? The Jetty is the perfect place to give it a try and especially a great place to make memories with the kiddies! The Chicago Park District will “hook” you up with guided instruction, tips and more. Matt Renfree, senior program specialist, Untitledsays, "Nearly everybody catches fish. Most days, we are at 80 or 90 fish. The first weekend we had 484 people out.” The program, on the west end of “The Jetty: Floating Gardens,” part of the 0369.3-cpp-4681_large-1800x2705Riverwalk between Wells and Franklin streets, runs Thursdays and Fridays from noon-6 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm, now through August 15 and again from August 21 to September 25. The program teaches fish and fishing on the Chicago River and includes species such as bluegill and gobies, sunfish, crappie, large and small mouth bass, common carp and channel catfish. Fish are released, except for gobies, which are put in clear plastic bins to become a teaching tool about invasive species. So far, the rarest fish captured has been an American eel. All species that are caught are logged. (Check out more places to fish in and around Chicago here!) Now this is REEL fun!

New Year's Eve looked a little different this year. Besides Covid changing the landscape of the entire world, it also kept us from celebrating the end of one of the worst years in recent memory. Restaurants missed out on much needed revenue, friends missed traditional celebrations with family and Times Square was eerily empty. People could only peek out their windows like Jimmy Stewart in "Rear Window" trying to get a feel for what was happening outside. We are all still on lockdown, mentally and physically. Chuck and I grabbed longtime friend Michael Kutza

determined to still experience NYE, this year in a tent with heaters. Even though people were having fun we all knew this was just a (hopefully temporary) substitute for the real thing. All of this lack of freedom made me think about the wild and woolly days of NYEs past. We're so lucky

to have experienced the heyday of Playboy with Hefner at his Mansion in LA. I always felt his parties rivaled Jay Gatsby's in exquisite excess and excitement. The invitations, always with beautiful pinup artwork created by Olivia De Berardinis, arrived in the mail a few weeks before the big event (I've saved them all).

One year, the Village People performed, another year Three Six Mafia hit the stage that was inside a ginormous tent on the grounds of Hef's Holmby Hills estate. Another year, one of Hef's three girlfriends, Bridget Marquardt,  popped out of a giant cake

Some girls' interpretations of the "suggested attire" left little to the imagination. Oh, those were truly the days! I'm happy to see Playboy doing so well online now too. Even though the magazines have physically disappeared, the brand's online presence is strong and growing. I'm so happy to still have them as a family too. Here's to another 68 years and to a bigger, brighter 2021 for us all!

My PostI quizzed some of my favorite bold-faced names to see how they were handling the pandemic, what their NYE resolutions were, their best moments of 2020, hopes for the future and any advice that might give us some inspiration. I needed my mommy. It doesn't matter how old you are." Her NYE resolution? "To live in the moment!" Her advice? "Everyone is going through something, respect and try not to judge."

Kathy Piccone

Kathy O'Malley Piccone

Kathy O'Malley Piccone, the hostess with the mostest at Gibson's Steakhouse, said her favorite moments during the pandemic were "when people started to reach out to each other, sending texts, jokes, puzzles, flowers, delicious foods from local restaurants and the wonderful 'calm app.'' She said, "Most of all, just sending love and positive vibes to each others. Touching moments that brought me to tears every evening at 8 pm throughout the city [when people serenaded the healthcare workers]." Her NYE resolution is to "spread more kindness, more love and generosity, more understanding of one another, more courage and peace and be more in the moment."

Both the Greater Chicago Food Depository and Northern Illinois Food Bank have worked so hard feeding the community, as well as all the local food pantries across Chicagoland." During the isolation she learned "how to make a mean arancini from Chef Tony Priolo, delicious Mac & Cheese from Chef Brian Jupiter and taste more wines with Belinda Chang all via our Mariano's meet-ups and zoom classes." Her NYE resolution? "To read more! She has started with Julia Child's "My Life in France." Amanda said, "I admire her, she started and blossomed in her career later in life. She's an epic legend in our industry." She added a quote from one of her favorite authors Morgan Harper Nichols, 'Even if the wait carries on another year, I will not get where I am going without first learning to be here.'"

She's a good friend and I can tell you I have never met anyone so tenacious and driven (in a very good way). She said 2020 was a time of total renewal for her. She regained mobility "by some miracle" [she suffered from MS for years and years] and "connected deeply" with her dearest friends. Her NYE resolution is to "cry when things make me happy or sad and to feel and live my life to the fullest, no pretending anything." Her motto? "Be in love with your life every single minute. My grandma passed away this December at age 98 and she was the strongest, toughest, most loving person who never complained about anything she had to live through. ABC-7's John Garcia for having me on their segments recently! I loved chatting about what to do for NYE with John (watch segment here) and to Steven about how our nonprofits are pivoting their fundraisers. (Watch this segment here!)

One of my favorite silver linings to this pandemic mess is the fact that our animal shelters are at their lowest point with 47345717_10155897884056272_3390432546213855232_oun-adopted rescues! As a matter of fact, PAWS Chicago has reported a near record number of adoptions in 2020–4,100! Through their Holiday-Adopt-a-Thon and usual grassroots efforts, they have managed to find forever homes for 4100 UntitledDOGS AND CATS! Can I get a Woot! Woot!? PAWS Chicago also provides extensive resources to help pets make a seamless transition into their news home and also provides a lifetime safety net for every animal, ensuring that if something happens to the adopter, their PAWS pet will always be cared for. I'm hearing similar good news from One Tail at a Time and also Young at Heart Senior Pet Rescue–all my favorites and much recommended animal shelters. Please check them out if you're looking for a pet!

IMG_0710We recently experienced Six Flags' Holiday in the Park Drive-Thru in Gurnee. Over 3 million lights illuminate the park as cars drive through at 3 mph. We ordered hot IMG_0714chocolate, a funnel cake and I bought an ornament (of course). We listened to piped in holiday music and it was sort of eerie, to be honest, and had the feel of driving through a deserted theme park in the Truman Show. However, I guess if we'd lived closer, the experience would've been a little easier and better. But, frankly, driving through the park with the Notre Dame game blasting on the radio might've had something to do with my lack of enthusiasm (although Chuck was certainly entitled to cheer on his favorite team!) This is only my POV, so please go and find out for yourselves (and let me know what you think!) The experience has been extended through Jan. 10, details here!

As I close out my first blog of 2021, I must say, I am glad to leave 2020 (far) behind. I've never had a worse Goodbye-2020-hello-2021-images-12year and I know many of my friends feel the same. There's was no  "dashing through the snow on a one horse open sleigh, o'er the fields we go, laughing all the way"…… Not this year when everything in the world changed in the blink of a Covid eye. I couldn't even get in my usual cheery mood for Christmas, at Elf on Shelfleast not in the way I used to. One minute, we're planning family gatherings, figuring out seating, who will sit at the kids' table and the next thing you know, we're all Zooming in to "celebrate" on computer screens. I found myself decorating for Christmas almost manically, trying to create much needed joy that is at a premium now. I know store

looked like a tornado hit it before I could even ice the roof. This year, we lost our dog, family members, I lost a job, Chuck lost his three dearest friends and had a TIA (mini-stroke). I think I was entitled to decorate as much as I wanted to try to fill this void and you can bet these decorations are gonna be here for a while. Nothing makes me happier than twinkling Christmas tree lights. It reminds me of all the GOOD years in the past when all of our family was gathered together, giving gifts and

thanks for our good health and the fact that we were still here. Pre-Covid, you could still find Santa in all the department stores, which were decorated to the nines. I'm happy though to see that retail, despite all its setbacks, still

tried to be festive. Macy's, although certainly not close to the old Marshall Field's in holiday decor, still had cheerful windows and the Great Tree in the Walnut Room. And, although families couldn't carry on life-long traditions of dining there during the season, they could still order carry-out–the famous Mrs. Hering's Chicken Pot Pie (recipe here), lobster bisque, Frango Mint

Chocolate Ice Cream Pie and more. For Chuck and me, we still tried to carry on family traditions. We baked my mom's ham (Cooks only) and I fixed Mama Mary Johnson's famous sweet potato pie (whose recipe was featured in Ann Gerber's 1985 book, "Chicago's Sweet Tooth."). I also cooked the requisite black-eyed peas for good luck on New Year's Day (I pray it works). We toasted to the loved ones we lost and prayed for a better future, one that will bring back the human element and social interaction that is necessary to the survival of a species. We can't drift apart. We need "parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting and caroling out in the snow," now more than ever. Here's hoping this year is off to a great start for you!

Love always,

Chuck and I enjoyed another road trip to kick-off the new year. We had an itinerary that took us through 8 states–to a chic Palm Beach wedding, South Beach and even to Graceland, the home of the King! The Palm Beach wedding was between two dear, darling friends, Michelle Nicole Durpetti and Collin

Russell Pierson. Hands down, it was the most elegant, extravagant affair we've ever attended. The weekend long event began with a magnificent welcome party at the Breakers, one of the most beautiful luxury hotels in world. Originally planned around the North pool, the event was moved inside due to unseasonably cool #9weather. But that sure didn't put a damper on the festivities–on the contrary, I think the Venetian Ballroom was awe-inspiring and the decor couldn't have looked more beautiful. Hundreds of lighted globes hung from the ceiling casting a warm

glow over the crowd. Food stations offered every type of delicious dish imaginable and servers were everywhere waiting to attend to your every need. As a surprise, Collin had arranged for an

Cooper Hefner hosts Playboy's first NYE party post Hef

Cooper Hefner, with fiancee Scarlett Byrne, hosts Playboy's first NYE party post Hef

Hugh Hefner's parties were legendary and I've been lucky enough to have attended my fair share but, in my mind, all bets were off for this year's annual New Year's Eve party considering Hef's recent passing. So, when I received a text from his son Cooper, the magazine's chief creative officer, asking

if my email address was correct for sending an invite, I was surprised and elated. I knew the event wouldn't be held at the L.A. Playboy Mansion since it had been sold and, from reports, everyone had to vacate the premises by December 27. So I

anxiously awaited the news and then THE email arrived. I was thrilled to see that Cooper had used one of his dad's favorite pinup artists, Olivia De Berardinis, to again create the invite image. A scantily clad woman wearing Bunny ears, a fluffy tail and a sheer negligee invited guests to join him (Cooper) at a NYE party at the historic Culver Hotel, dress code "black tie, ball dress or

and, I was happy to see, most all the other guests, around 250 or so, did too. Actually, it was one of the most elegant Playboy parties we've ever attended. Beautiful young women who looked and dressed like supermodels attended alongside handsome young men all decked out in tuxes. Cooper and his gorgeous fianceé, actress Scarlett Byrne, set the tone.

They never left each other's side the entire night and could often be seen gazing lovingly into each other's eyes. It was a delight to see Cooper so happy and with a partner who clearly loves and supports him. Entertainment was outstanding and

something exciting seemed to be happening at any given moment. Showgirls in silver top hats danced to "Puttin on the Ritz" (see video here), a hot band (Night Owl) had everyone on the dance floor, a singer from "America's Got Talent" (?) and more dancers performed other numbers throughout the evening. Playmates seen in the crowd included Jessica Wall (Sept. 2017), Milan Dixon (Oct. 2017), Tiffany Toth (Sept. 2011) and Summer Altice (August 2000). A section of the

ballroom had been cordoned off for Cooper and his family with a couple of security guards keeping a close watch. His mother, Kimberly Conrad Hefner (Playmate of the Year 1989), brother Marston and their grandmother were all in attendance. I didn't see any aging actors or scantily clad women like Hef's parties used to attract. I believe the crowd at this year's soireé accurately reflected the changing of the guard, both for Playboy and the magazine, one with a new, more youthful vision that embraces change. After the party

was in full swing, I noticed a new edition to Cooper's group–Tiffany Trump, President Donald Trump's and his ex-wife Marla Maple's daughter. She was much taller than I expected and clad in a figure-hugging, strapless, short, sparkling gold cocktail dress. She was hugged by all as her two security guards stood watch. It made me wish I had a security guard too since it seems everyone had one but me. Cooper and Scarlett, along

with guests, spent a lot of time on the dance floor. He even coaxed his mom Kimberly out for a number or two. I never saw Tiffany leave the security enclosure. As the countdown to midnight began (see video here), the iphones came out to record the historic moment–historic on many levels, the first post-Hef party, Cooper's first job as sole Playboy party host as well as a brand new year. The event exceeded all my expectations. Sparklers lit up the

room as black and white videos of Hugh M. Hefner's legendary life were projected onto the walls (see video here). Chuck and I were ecstatic to be witnesses and honored to be guests. Cooper whispered something so sweet in my ear that it brought tears to my eyes but this will remain my little secret. Following the celebration to ring in the New Year, Cooper took to the stage. He thanked guests for attending and choked up when he

spoke of his late father. I love the way he wears his heart on his sleeve and think this type of sensitivity bodes very well for Playboy's future. No one wanted to leave the party. It was a night for remembering the past and looking forward to a bright new era. It was a night to honor Hef and the remarkable legacy he left us. And I, for one, can't wait to join Cooper and Playboy on the next exciting leg of their journey. (To see Playboy Mag's NYE coverage, click here).

In 2004, Kenney lost her seven-year battle with breast cancer at the age of 35. One year later, Fyfe gathered a group of close friends and colleagues to Blog 10start Tickled Pink in honor of her beloved cousin, whose fun-loving spirit was shining through on this night. “We are thrilled to have the most successful event so far,” enthused Fyfe. Michigan Avenue Magazine’s Susanna Negovan hosted this event, which was also where she met her husband, Tom, years ago! Blog 1I hated to miss the Center on Halsted’s annual Oscar party this year but I know it was another runaway success! A sell-out crowd of more than 400 guests brought glitz and glamour to the Park West for this Blog 2year’s show which was broadcast on three giant movie screens. The night also included a full buffet courtesy of The Entertaining Company, cocktails and champagne. Adding to the festive atmosphere, attendees were interviewed on the red carpet by Precious Jewel, which was aired live via closed-circuit TV courtesy of Mini Blog 3 - Bill Pritchard (L) and friendsof Chicago. The Nielsen Company served as presenting sponsor for the second year in a row. All told, Center on Halsted raised a record $70K for their programs and services through ticket sales, a silent auction, a raffle and corporate sponsorships. Blog 4“Our tremendous success shows the support the people, companies and institutions of Chicago have for our Center,” said CEO Modesto Tico Valle. “The money raised will go directly back to building and strengthening the LGBT community through the diverse programs offered daily at Center on Halsted.” (Photos by Anthony Meade…to view more pics, please click here!)

Blog 1I thought her grandmother, Princess Grace of Monaco, was one of the most beautiful women in the world and I think her Blog 3mother, Princess Caroline, has the same lovely features but no one has the looks of global IT girl, Princess Charlotte Casiraghi. Charlotte is the new face of Gucci and, boy, what a smart move this was! Gucci’s latest campaign, shot by Peter Lindbergh, shows Charlotte in one of her favorite spots: with her horse in its stable Blog 2against a backdrop of hay. She is a natural beauty that this Italian fashion house was wise to snare. Besides the commercial presence, she will also star in their Forever Now campaign Blog 4 - Princess Grace with Stephanie and Caroline, 1960series conceived by creative director Frida Giannini in collaboration with Charlotte herself. Over the next two years, the young royal will be photographed by four of the world’s top photographers in photos celebrating the brand’s icons. The video is breathtaking like the lady herself…
