Hi dear friends and welcome to Candid Candace on a new platform, WordPress. Obviously, after 17 years on Typepad, this is going to be a learning curve, but as I’ve said before, this blog isn’t going anywhere so I appreciate your continued support! Typepad abruptly canceled all content at the end of September. All those poor writers who couldn’t save their content by then, will have lost it all. It sort of reminded me of the last two times I lost ALL my writing- the first time when Sherren Leigh, founder of Today’s Chicago Woman decided to just delete years of work on a whim – causing all her writers to lose everything. Then, the second nightmare occurred when the Chicago Tribune yanked Chicago Now out from under the feet of its 300+ writers- causing everyone to lose years of hard work and well-established blogs. So, I guess, if I’ve survived these two messes, I can handle this change.
It will be frustrating, but I’m still here!
Let’s switch to something more heartwarming! The Chicago Lighthouse just hosted its most successful FLAIR event in its history! Special thanks and kudos to stellar honoree Dr. Stacie McClane, returning co-chairs Sherrill Bodine, Sherry Lea Holson and Sheree Schimmer. I was honored to return as co-emcee with Tracey DiBuono (also fashion show producer through her ZZAZZ Productions)

The event featured a lively reception, the organization’s largest silent auction and a diverse runway show followed by a luncheon, all in support of the Lighthouse’s mission. Since its inception in 2014, FLAIR has been celebrated as Chicago’s most inclusive fashion showcase, inviting models of varying abilities to share the spotlight on the runway. The show brings together local designers, retailers, business leaders and supporters to help raise funds for more than 40 Lighthouse services ranging from early intervention and low-vision exams to vocational training and youth education.

The fashion show featured a diverse array of designers and retailers, culminating in a grand finale presented by Macy’s State Street. Participating in the show were Anne Fontaine, Contessa Bottega, Lafayette 148, Lauren Lein, Mario Pinto, Menotti Couture, NINA and Mira Couture.

Roberta Kramer, Heritage Auctions senior VP strategy and business development, energetically conducted the paddle raise adding even more revenue to the event’s fundraising goals. The final increment, $120, was asked in honor of the organization’s upcoming 120th anniversary.CC

The silent auction was the largest to date with 59 offerings from Piccolo Sogno, Neiman Marcus, Steak 48, Waldorf Astoria, Maria Pinto, Porchlight Music Theatre, Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Gene & Georgetti, Chicago White Sox, Lookingglass Theatre Company, Music of the Baroque, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, Adler Planetarium, portraitist Rosemary Fanti, Brookfield Zoo, Remy Bumppo Think Theatre, Giordano Dance Company, Lincoln Park Zoo, Goodman Theatre and more. FLAIR 2025 was a testament to the power of fashion to bring people together for a common cause. It underscored the importance of inclusivity and community support in driving meaningful change. Fairmont Chicago was buzzing with energy and elegance on Sept. 23 as Giuliana Rancic and Janet Lee Mandell joined forces for an unforgettable night of fashion, philanthropy and sparkle. Giuliana, celebrity, reporter, breast cancer survivor, fashion designer and entrepreneur, was joined by Janet, founder of the luxe rental boutique Janet Mandell, to celebrate the launch ofG by Giuliana on HSN and debut Giuliana Prosecco.

Guests mingled over flutes of bubbly and caviar with cameras flashing and laughter in the air. Giuliana shared her own breast cancer journey with raw honesty, reminding everyone of the strength behind her smile. A portion of sales from her HSN line and the evening’s prosecco will go to The Pink Agenda (a nonprofit that supports breast cancer research), via Giuliana’s Fab-U-Wish Foundation, which grants wishes to women undergoing cancer treatment. Fairmont’s GM, Nick OrRico, announced the hotel would also contribute part of its proceeds of the bar’s prosecco sales to the same cause.

Janet Mandell brought her signature touch of high fashion and smart sustainability to the mix. Her company, founded in 2018, offers a curated luxury wardrobe rental experience from her flagship in Chicago on Michigan Avenue to Los Angeles and New York City. She’s pushing the envelope further with new consignment and AI-driven virtual try-on features to deepen the “circular fashion” model according to FashionUnited. She and Giuliana made the room feel like a couture salon, inclusive and electric.

In the room were some of Chicago’s finest: Declan and Angela McGovern, Sylvia Perez, Susanna Wickham, Jennifer Sutton Brieva, Bunny Frum, Dorothy Dziubasik, Kathy Kozminske, Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas and multitalented Cortney Hall, who dazzled on the runway. Giuliana’s cancer journey was woven into every part of the evening. In 2011, after a routine mammogram (initially tied to her infertility treatment), she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 36, even though she had no family history. A lumpectomy failed to remove all malignant tissue, so she opted for a double mastectomy and reconstructive surgery. Over the years, she has emphasized that openness and early detection matter and she advocates tirelessly for women to know their bodies and get screened.

Janet Mandell’s vision has always been about more than renting designer dresses. She sees fashion as an experience that brings empowerment. By bringing couture-level service (on-site tailoring, styling, etc.) to the rental world, she helps women feel extraordinary without the financial burden of owning every gown. Her recent moves into consignment and AI try-ons reinforce her belief that luxury can be sustainable and that fashion can be both aspirational and respectful of the planet.That night at the Fairmont, fashion and heart were inseparable. The room glowed not only with style, but with generosity, community and shared purpose. It’s proof that when visionaries like Giuliana and Janet bring people together, magic happens and good is born from glamour.
Former Mayor Rich Daley will be honored on Oct. 30 at Navy Pier.
Navy Pier is set to host a gala event titled “A Chicago ExPIERience” on October 30, honoring former Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley for his pivotal role in the 1995 redevelopment of the iconic lakefront destination. This celebration will reflect on the transformation that revitalized Navy Pier, turning it into a vibrant hub of culture and commerce. The evening will pay tribute to Mayor Daley’s leadership, influence, and innovation that once again made Navy Pier the heart of the Chicago experience.
The gala will offer guests an immersive journey back to the mid-1990s, capturing the excitement and wonder of the Pier’s revitalization. There will be surprise performances and “carnival classics.” Attendees will experience the fun and wonder that revitalized the Pier 30 years ago and continues to inspire millions from across the globe to this day.

World Fashion Festival launched its 2025 edition with an opening night at Macy’s State Street Sept. 18, turning the historic Walnut Room into a grand stage for fashion, dance and cultural exchange. The night began with a flamenco-inspired performance that combined live dance with runway presentations. Under the theme “A Night of Passion, Rhythm & Couture,” designers drew from Spanish traditions while incorporating modern styles to create a dynamic link between movement and fashion.

The program, co-hosted by WGN-TV’s Lourdes Durate and NBC-5’s Juan Carlos Navarette, also served as a fundraiser for Ensemble Español Spanish Dance Theater, connecting the artistic energy of the evening to a broader cultural mission. Students from Columbia College Chicago were involved in production and staging, gaining real-world experience in presenting a large-scale fashion event.

Designers featured on opening night included Columbia College student Senbi Turner, Debag of Jordan/Palestine, Bela Lobo of Argentina and Daniel Jemberu from Ethiopia. Guests ranged from fashion enthusiasts to civic leaders and cultural figures, who gathered to see these international and emerging designers make their Chicago debuts. During the evening, Chicago Star Associate Publisher Candace Jordan (this author), received the Iconic Legacy Award, presented by festival founder Cesar Rolón. Other honorees throughout the event were Terisa Griffin and Triphena Jeton Johnson.

The three-day event continued on Sept. 19 with a fashionable fundraiser celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Chicago International Salsa Congress, followed on Sept. 20 by the finale, “A Night of Elegance, Nostalgia and High Fashion,” a tribute to Diana Ross and the glamour of Black and Latino fashion narratives. Other presenting designers included Katya Zol, Valentina Musa, Oemah Etnik, Jack Vallant, Bryan Agosto, Claudia Arce, Edreu Alaban and Thomas Albers. The event also included multiple fashion pop-ups and workshops.
Rolón, who created and produces the festival, was central to the event. His leadership continues to drive its mission of promoting fashion as a platform for cultural exchanges and social impact. He also serves as the festival’s public face, managing connections with designers, sponsors, models and institutions. Rolón is also the founder of Latino Fashion Week.

This November, The Joffrey Ballet presents Joffrey at the Harris: Matters of the Heart at the Harris Theater (Nov. 6–9). The two-act program explores love, identity, and resilience through two distinct works: Wabash & You, a world premiere by Chanel DaSilva featuring live music from The Main Squeeze, and Broken Wings by Annabelle Lopez Ochoa, inspired by Frida Kahlo’s life and art. Well, friends, the dog days of summer officially tapped out and somehow, I blinked and missed the whole thing. One minute we were dreaming of patio brunches and beach days, and the next? Poof. Gone. I didn’t even make it to my beloved farm stands or farmers markets this year. And let’s not even talk about the vacation that didn’t happen. Ouch. But this is Chicago, we don’t just sit around pouting into our iced coffee. We find the sparkle. Case in point: the fabulous, over-the-top Service Club of Chicago “Day on the Terrace” fashion show/fundraiser. It’s so big now that co-chairs Jean Antoniou, Sharyl Mackey and Tracey DiBuono might have to swap out the Peninsula catwalk for the United Center (and I’m only half kidding). And don’t get me started on the PAWS Chicago Beach Party, where fur babies reign supreme, tails wag like there’s no tomorrow and the Offshore Rooftop becomes a little slice of puppy paradise. So, buckle up, we’re diving into all the moments, causes and celebrations that make Chicago a city like no other.

including its 360@CACC initiative in partnership with Chicago Animal Care & Control, the Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic and the Nan & Wayne Kocourek Medical Center, a 30,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility dedicated to providing medical care for homeless pets. In addition to its Chicago programs, PAWS Chicago’s Disaster Relief Team responded to the recent catastrophic flash floods in the Texas Hill Country by partnering with Wings of Rescue, Concho Valley PAWS and Austin Pets Alive! to relocate dozens of pets previously housed in shelters overwhelmed by the disaster. More than just a festive summer soirée, PAWS Chicago’s Beach Party shined a spotlight on the city’s homeless pet population and the organization’s life-saving work. In 2024, PAWS served 23,842 homeless animals through spay/neuter surgeries, adoptions, fostering, medical care and community outreach programs.

The committee then determines where the SC funds will make the biggest impact. Staffed entirely by volunteer members who vet every single grant,

the committee ensures the organizations are stable and viable before they receive the support requested. Once an organization is fully vetted and awarded a grant, cash payments are NOT directly distributed to the grantee. This is what makes them different and able to make a difference among many nonprofits instead of just one. Payment is then made directly to the vendor for the allocated item and then that item is delivered to the organization to fulfill that specific, requested need. So, even though the Service Club’s “Day on the Terrace” was a fashionista’s dream, it also made dreams come true for those less fortunate.

The Ravinia Women’s Board hosted its 59th annual Gala, themed “One Night Only: An Evening with Sutton Foster and Kelli O’Hara” at Ravinia Festival in Highland Park. The July 13 event featured a special performance by
Broadway stars O’Hara and Foster, accompanied by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Marin Alsop. This performance marked the first time Ravinia, North America’s oldest outdoor music festival, hosted a performance by these two acclaimed artists. The evening also introduced the Gala’s first-ever

Foster brought her trademark charisma, comedic flair and powerhouse vocal delivery; O’Hara impressed with her soprano and refined presence. The program opened with George Gershwin’s overture to “Girl Crazy” and included selections like Jeanine Tesori’s “Great Adventure,” Stephen Sondheim’s “What More Do I Need?,” David Yazbek’s “Answer Me,” Cole Porter’s “Anything Goes” and more. The duo incorporated lighthearted

funwith a spirited 1990s medley that featured hits from Mariah Carey, TLC and even a lively nod to“Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana during their stage banter. O’Hara charmed the audience with Kelli O’Hara’s “They Don’t Let You in the Opera (If You’re a Country Star)” while Foster offered a tender version of Joni Mitchell’s “A Case of You.” The popular medley and their duets earned frequent standing ovations. The concert finale was a moving performance of Bob Dylan’s “Make You Feel My Love,” featuring percussionist Wanye Williams, an alum of Reach Teach Play, on vibraphone, reinforcing the gala’s educational mission through music. Reach Teach Play scholars also performed earlier during cocktails and again during dinner in the Gala Tent, where Foster and O’Hara mingled warmly with guests and students alike before the evening concluded.

When this exhibit finally opens, I hope it will be embraced with open arms—just as I was made to feel special by Hugh Hefner himself. He had a remarkable way of making the Bunnies and Playmates feel cherished—as if we were part of his grand vision, not just figures in a magazine. That feeling—a flash of pride, excitement and belonging—will stay with me always, with or without the physical items. What truly matters is that moment in time, forever etched in my heart. This is a very special blog post as it celebrates 17 years of bringing you the first and longest running lifestyle blog in Chicago! It’s been a delightful labor of love since 2008 and I’ve met so very many fabulous people along the way. I first began the blog on the Today’s Chicago Woman website, thanks to the urging of its founder Sherren Leigh. I would love to be able to share you that first entry, but sadly and suddenly, Sherren deleted the entire website causing me and a load of great writers to lose all of their content there. It wasn’t a nice thing to do without warning but that was her decision. On a brighter note, I DO have my very first independent blog which I am sharing with you here now! In it, you will see many familiar faces, events and organizations. Some of these local notables are, sadly, no longer with us, which makes it even more poignant. They are certainly with us in spirit. Thanks to all of you for sticking with me throughout the years and here’s to 100 more just like it! Enjoy!
Welcome to my first blog as an independent! I’ve left TCW to pursue other interests but my interest in blogging remains the same. I hope you’ll like it! Summer is nearing an end and quite the summer it was…so many events and happenings in so little time! Here are some highlights:
THE SERVICE CLUB OF CHICAGO'S DAY ON THE TERRACE EVENT
The annual Day on the Terrace fashion show was held on August 1st at the Peninsula Hotel benefiting the Service Club of Chicago, one of the city's oldest philanthropic organizations. It was organized, as always, by the Queen Bee of Chicago – Hazel Barr. She outdid herself this time with an over-the-top show, including circus performers on unicycles displaying the store signs, acrobats and everything else you could think of. It was a sold-out event with over 330 gorgeous ladies in attendance. The fashion show consisted of top-of-the-line retailers including a new designer to the show, Quinton d'Alexander. I was lucky enough to wear his unique creations – top hat, cane, white gloves and an outfit right from the racetrack in My Fair Lady – and it was so much fun! Other participating stores included Luca Luca (we LOVE Simona!), Dismero, Escada(we LOVE Ann!), Macy's 28 Shoppe, Ultimo, Maria Pinto (who will also be showing her awesome fall fashions for the Joffrey's Couture & Cocktails on Monday, September 15th), Hana K and Neiman Marcus (we missed Tina, who was on vacation). HINCKLEY BOATS AT THE CHICAGO YACHT CLUB
Another fabulous event was organized by our dear friend, Kate Gaynor, on behalf of Marsh and Hinckley boats. It was held at the Chicago Yacht Club on a perfect summer evening. There were hors d'oeuvres, cocktails and then the BOATS! I don't think we can simply call these masterpieces boats because they were all handmade and priced in the millions. Breathtaking!

LOUIS VUITTON BOUTIQUE OPENING CELEBRATION AT TABLE 52
On July 10th, we attended a party at Table 52 celebrating the opening of the Louis Vuitton Boutique in Nordstrom – Chicago is the only city to have this arrangement 🙂 – a very intimate affair with only about 24 guests upstairs in the restaurant. We were greeted by the infinitely talented chef Art Smith with champagne at the foot of the stairs and when we walked into the upstairs dining area, it took our breath away! The space was designed by our very own Jonathan Ryan and Debi Lilly from A Perfect Event, in conjunction with the LV creative team. All of Jonathan's projects are masterpieces but I think he outdid himself with this one! The room was a sea of candlelight from burgundy tapers that were highlighted by beautiful matching floral arrangements in silver bowls; even the tablecloths had delicate LV logos etched in gold. There was a photo of Pete Nordstrom's grandfather tucked into an antique cupboard surrounded by vintage Louis Vuitton pieces, original shoes from Nordstrom's first shoe department and old books.
The meal was unbelievable, starting with Art’s signature parmesan cheese and buttermilk biscuits and ending with his famous hummingbird cake; Art even signed all of our menus in silver to commemorate the event.
Among the event’s lucky guests were darling artist Francine Turk and her husband, Steve; Sven Asmus; Les Coney; great Bears defensive tackle and all around cute guy, Tommie Harris; handsome Bulls guard, Ben Gordon; and Lauren and Brian Rosen. Pete Nordstrom and Daniel LaLonde, president and CEO of LV North America, gave charming speeches, as did Art Smith. The evening was capped off with a chauffeured ride back home. It was one of the best evenings with the most incredible attention to detail. Everyone received a signed cookbook from Art AND a Louis Vuitton wallet!! Unbelievable…a truly a perfect event. OUR DAY AT COMMON THREADS
In the first week of June, I took a group of friends including Dori Wilson, Bernice Pink, Hedwig Golant and Jan Bail for a very unique and worthwhile experience: cooking at the Common Threads after-school program with Art Smith and his students. If you haven’t heard of Common Threads, it was started by our wonderful Art and his life partner, Jesus Salgueiro, in October 2001, a month after planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers. Art and Jesus traveled to New York on a mission of healing where Art had been asked to cook dinner for a mother and her three school-aged children after their father had disappeared in the collapse of Tower Two. Art and Jesus were so touched by this experience that when they came back to Chicago, Art penned these impactful and fateful words: “For our world is a quilt, its people the fabric, all joined together by common threads.” From this quote, Art and Jesus’ organization grew. Their executive director and my friend, Linda Novick-O’Keefe, drew out their business plan and Common Threads – a non-profit teaching children age 8 to 12 valuable lessons about nutrition and food preparation in a number of cultures – was born. Today, Common Threads has a presence in 17 schools across the country and has served over 1,000 kids this year alone. Believe me, this is one organization that makes a difference at the level we need it most: our children. JOFFREY BALLET PRESS KICKOFF PARTY AND C-HOUSE OPENING
Also in June – on a beautiful sparkling night, to be exact – the Joffrey Ballet held their press kickoff party at the hot new Affinia Hotel for the upcoming Couture & Cocktails event scheduled for Monday, September 15th, as mentioned above. It also was the official opening of New York chef Marcus Samuelson’s first foray into the Chicago restaurant scene with C-House. The crowd was hot but the 29th floor C-View Lounge was even hotter. Here is some wonderful Joffrey Ballet news for all of you fans and friends: On September 11th in Millennium Park, the Joffrey Ballet will headline a program entitled An Evening of Remembrances–A Salute to the Victims and Families of 9/11. Helen Melchior will serve as the chairman of the entire weekend of events including the official opening night in the Black Box Theatre on Friday, September 12th, a black tie dinner followed by the first performance in the Joffrey's new home. Tickets are $1,000 and it will be an event not to be missed; history in the making, I tell you! The whole city will be celebrating with banners along Randolph Street, pointe shoes and costumes with congratulatory signs in windows along Oak Street and Michigan Avenue, even the old Esquire Theater marquee is carrying our message as I type! There will be a public open house with tours on Saturday, September 13th and the opening events will close with the must-attend party of the season, Couture & Cocktails, on Monday, September 15th. Now, on a personal note, what gorgeous goddaughter of mine got up close and personal with Vogue magazine’s editor-at-large, Andre Leon Talley? Samantha Amato, of course! She should be a model but she won’t listen to her aunt. FAST FORWARD TO FALL
This fall will be a classic and clean-line lover’s delight. The clothes are chic and cut to a turn. I think Michael Kors has nailed the looks this year; he has designed some incredible fur collars that you just slap around your neck with any outfit and it’s instantly chic. For this matter, if you have an old fur coat that’s out of style and you don’t know what to do with it, have it made into a cool collar or a giant muff – this is what I’ll be doing! I also love the simple classic colors: black, camel and gray. These colors are also so great to travel with because they all mix so well. I’m leaving for Cape Cod for the first time soon so I will let you know how I did with my packing! It’s Sandy Deromedi’s 50th birthday party and we’re all going. As my friends know, I live for the holiday season and there's no better place to experience it than right here in the Windy City! And, although I don't quite have the weather I want yet- a soft, sparkling blanket of snow – I'm still very thankful for what we have. I’m glad we have the Christkindlmarket back as I’m a huge fan (through Dec. 24). I love the festive feeling, the food and the one-of-a-kind ornaments. And yes, every year, I pick up one of the new mugs (it’s now become a tradition and, as Chuck says, yet another collection for me.) The tree is up at Macy’s (still Marshall Field’s to me) and the Walnut Room beckons for our annual Christmas luncheon. This city shines so brightly during the holidays; it thrills me to see the homes decorated, the pop-ups all around town and all the fun-filled parties with friends to look forward to. Our tree is up and our home is so cozy and cheerful. And, even though it’s a complete hassle getting all the decor out of storage and dragging it home; once it’s set up- all the stress just melts away. (We have a Balsam Hills flip tree and decorating has never been easier!) My wish for Santa this year will be a little different than years’ past. We’ve had a tough few years, not only in Chicago, but in the country and the world. I believe in biorhythms and feel like we are all due for an uptick in our charts. I hope/wish we can all come together in a friendlier way and agree to accept each other’s differences as well as celebrate our commonalities. Sounds simplistic, but if anyone can do it, Santa can! I will be putting out extra milk and cookies. The event, co-chaired by Dana Sanders and Jenny Stevens, featured Matthew Hoffman’s iconic 'BIG hope' sculpture, temporarily relocated from Michigan Avenue, which served as a powerful tribute to those impacted by breast cancer. Through partnerships with top Chicago hospitals, the Lynn Sage Foundation is driving breakthroughs in treatment access. Yet, as the American Cancer Society notes, breast cancer still affects 1 in 8 women in the U.S., underlining the ongoing need for research and support. “Everyone deserves hope and access to lifesaving care,” said co-founder Laura Sage, as the foundation works tirelessly to make that a reality.

They celebrated the filmmaker’s iconic work on Forrest Gump, Back to the Future, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, and more. Later, he joined Kutza and family for dinner at RL, capping off a memorable night before heading to New York to support Back to the Future: The Musical. Chef Art shared his thoughts on Dia de los Muertos, “There isn’t a day that goes by that I don’t cry for them [late friends and family] or think about them. It took two movies, Coco and Remember Me, to teach America and the world about this beautiful custom.” Dia de los Muertos is a two-day holiday that reunites the living and dead. Families create ofrendas (offerings) to honor their departed family members. It’s a rare holiday for celebrating both death and life that is widely observed in Mexico, where it largely developed. It is also observed in other places, especially by people of Mexican heritage.

The 900 Shops delivered the first tree lighting on the avenue with its "Illuminate 900 event," Make-A-Wish Illinois' biggest holiday fundraiser! Set in a winter wonderland on all levels, the experience included holiday activations, delicious food and drink, the ZZAZZETTES, toy soldiers, Ava Fain, Ballet Chicago and SANTA, all wrapped up in a holiday bow! The 900 Shops first presented this unique experience in 2016 and, since then, have raised over $116,000 for charity!

For the 21st year Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas is celebrating ethnic holiday traditions of nearly 100 different nationalities at the “Christmas Trees from Around the World” display at her office. The annual celebration of cultural diversity showcases handcrafted ornaments and decorations. “Christmas Trees from Around the World” is a display of 3-foot trees decorated by members of various ethnic and religious communities. I spoke to Frank of Frank's Ornament House, he's been coming to the market for 25 years and absolutely loves it. Another vendor's daughter had designed several of the ornaments on display which I thought was so charming. Everyone has a story and I wish I could've chatted with every one of them. What a privilege it was to be a part of this night that raised funds to help Eversight restore sight through the healing power of donation, transplantation and research. Dr. Onkar Sawant, the head of research and innovation, attended the event and was on hand to answer any questions. I was honored to return as co-chair with the dear Michael Caputo. The Chinese American Service League (CASL) hosted its Annual Gala October 12, attracting hundreds of prominent Chicagoans as well as notable Asian American and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander (AANHPI) leaders from across the country. Presented by the Sue Ling Gin Foundation Trust and chaired by Michael Tang – Chairman, Tang Industries, CASL’s Annual Gala was held at Chicago’s historic Old Post Office. The highlight of the event was the presentation of CASL’s prestigious Golden Lion Award to The Asian AmericanFoundation (TAAF). As co-chair of CASL’s Advisory Board and organizational supporter for over two decades, Emmy award-winning anchor Judy Hsu of ABC-7 Chicago returned as the evening’s emcee. CASL’s esteemed Culinary Training Program, once again served appetizers during cocktail hour. CASL’s Annual Gala raises money for nearly 30 social service programs—such as child development, senior services, legal assistance, employment, citizenship, and more—that serve thousands of individuals in and around Chicago’s Chinatown and beyond. Since TAAF’s inception in 2021, the organization has passionately fought to elevate the voices of all AANHPI organizations, communities, and individuals across the country while making significant strides toward a more equitable future. During its first two years, TAAF has built impactful relationships with the Biden Administration, created a national Anti-Hate Action Network, and secured greater representation for the AANHPI community through achievements such as advocating for and securing the first AANHPI Muppet on Sesame Street, helping pass the TEAACH Act in Illinois, and more. The Golden Lion Award, bestowed upon individuals or organizations that positively impact the AANHPI community and embrace CASL’s spirit, was designed and created by the internationally renowned Zhou Brothers. The City of Chicago, Mag Mile Association and World Business Chicago led a strategy, coming out of pandemic recovery, to transform vacant retail spaces into experiences featuring local small businesses and the city’s strong global connections. Thus, was born three pop up shops on the Mag Mile, the Argentine Connection, Nordic House and Colores Mexicanos Chicago. Another pop-up is coming next week to Michigan Avenue. One of my favorite events of the year, and one definitely not to be missed by families, is WINGS Program, Inc.'s "Sweet Home Chicago" event. It will be held at the Four Seasons on Dec. 11 from 10 am to 1 pm. This year's 19th annual event will be co-chaired by Rita and John Canning to support families facing domestic violence issues. It will include gingerbread house decorating, balloon artists, family portraits, ornament decorating, visiting with Santa and K-9 Comfort Dogs, a special music performance by Ralph's World and MORE! They hosted their annual Mistletoe Medley, "Hearts of Gold," fashion show at Drury Lane Oakbrook Terrace on November 29. It's thrilling to watch Chicago's return, which I'm gauging on the strength of my events calendar. There are an enormous number of events and activities coming back bigger and better than ever and I couldn't be happier! Our streets are full, restaurants are busy, the boat tours have all returned and things are getting really exciting around here. I think after all the "you can't do thats", that people are rejoicing like it's Mardi Gras now just because they CAN! I feel like a great weight has been lifted off our shoulders. It's an honor to share some of these parties, activities and more below. I hope you have wonderful plans for summer….maybe you'll get some ideas here!

Over 200 ladies donned their finest millinery attire to attend. SC president Sherrill Bodine said, "We have all walked through a dark storm together and now here we are with our heads held high, and wearing beautiful hats, ready to take on the world again. And what a new beginning!" The guest speaker, Sandy Schreier, is the famed fashion curator and historian whose designer collections have been exhibited around the world. Sandy discussed her collection, design career, TV appearances, books and famous friendships to a rapt audience. (A VIP reception was hosted the night before at Neiman Marcus Michigan Avenue). At the end of the day, the event raised over $190,000 which will support the organization's Philanthropic Fund. The SC is an all-volunteer woman's organization that was founded in 1890. Adalina hosted "Friends & Family" dining this week in advance of its opening at its Gold Coast location, 912 N. State. The restaurant was buzzing with activity as servers flew around the elegant space with dishes created by its talented Michelin-starred Chef Soo Ahn. Against a backdrop of midnight blue walls, plush velvet banquettes, large scale artwork and a dramatic chandelier, diners enjoyed dishes that included handmade pastas such as rigatoni with Maine lobster, Red King crab and Calabrian chile and scallions; ravioli with summer truffles, corn, ricotta, pearl onions and aged balsamic and carved tableside porterhouses and Dover sole; salmon vesuvio; veal chop parmigiana, roasted chicken, a Wagyu strip steak and so much more. Starters included charred octopus, gnocco fritto, truffled caesar (prepared tableside) and a delicious fried green tomato caprese, among others. Opening Monday, June 21, hours will be 3pm to 1 pm, Monday through Sunday, with lunch and brunch service coming soon. The world has lost a hero. As a Survivor of the Holocaust and the President of Illinois Holocaust Museum & Education Center, Fritzie Fritzshall devoted her life to combating hatred and prejudice, inspiring people to become Upstanders instead of bystanders, and speaking out to make our world a better place. Everywhere she spoke, she changed people's lives and the way they see the world. I know because I am a witness. She passed away recently at age 91, and during her lifetime, she influenced all who met her or heard her words. During the Holocaust,
Fritzie revisits a concentration camp where she and her family were held.
Nazis occupied Fritzie's hometown of Klucharky, Czechoslovakia, and deported her, her mother and two brothers to Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp when Fritzie was just a young teenager. Her mother, two younger brothers and other family members were murdered. “There is no way to describe what it was like to be in the rail car hungry, cold, without food, without water, watching pregnant women begging for water, watching different people dying in front of you from lack of food, air, and water,” Fritzie said. “My own grandfather died in this car going to Auschwitz. In 1946, After surviving these atrocities, Fritzie came to Skokie, Illinois, and reunited with her father, who worked for Vienna Beef and had come to America before the Holocaust to provide his family with money from abroad. Fritzie, in a 2019 interview, said, “I want the world to remember and to know to never, ever, ever, ever forget about the Holocaust. We say ‘never again,’ but we don't often mean ‘never again.’ ‘Never again’ must be ‘never again.’ It must stop.”

Here's Chase's tips for keeping safe in the city. I wanted to share them in their entirety because I feel they are so important. In the paper's article, they are edited but I'm happy to be able to share his complete, very thoughtful suggestions here, for keeping safe in these difficult times. My Citizen's app is going off constantly now with reports of crime in every part of the city. Sort of feels like a war zone right now. Anyway, I hope these will be helpful for you. 1) DON'T BE AN EASY TARGET–Criminals usually target easy prey. They look for those that are not paying attention to their surroundings. They know you aren't paying attention when they see you on your phone. They know you are distracted by a conversation, or listening to music, especially with your earplugs in. They usually attack you from behind, take your possessions and disappear, before you even realize what happened. This is to their advantage, because if you never see them coming, even if the police caught them, you wouldn't be able to identify them. This is why being alert is so important! If you stay alert and aware of your surroundings, you can notice when people are watching you. You can notice the same car, possibly with tinted windows, circling the block as you walk down the street. Use your phone to call a friend, or loved one and tell them where you are and what's happening. Give them the license plate number of the car, or take a picture of it. Discreetly take a photo of someone you feel is suspicious and send it to a friend. If you can't take any pictures, remember as much about that person(s), as you can, in case you have to notify "911".
2) KNOW WHAT TO DO IF YOU'RE A VICTIM OF A CRIME–If you get attacked, threatened, or robbed, you want to immediately contact "911". "911" is for emergencies and "311" is for making non emergency reports. When you call "911", you will speak with a Call Taker. That person will ask you several questions. The more of those questions that you can answer, the better. They will ask you for your name, location and what happened. They will ask when it happened, how many offenders were there, if any vehicles were involved and a description of the vehicle. They will ask you to describe your assailant. Their race, approximate age, height and weight. They will ask about the color of their eyes and hair and to describe any clothing. All of this information is then relayed to a Dispatcher, who notifies the patrol cars in the area. Several cars will immediately begin looking for the offender(s) and other vehicles will come to you. If you were able to give out a relatively good description of the assailant(s), the police may locate someone near the address of occurrence and bring them back to the scene, for a "Show Up". If you identify the person(s), they will be arrested and taken to the district. If you do not identify them, they are released and the search continues.The police will search for witnesses and video surveillance to assist in locating any offenders. Remembering as much information as possible, is vital to the arrest and prosecution of any and all offenders. If your wallet or identification is taken, or stolen, immediately contact one of the major credit reporting agencies. Trans Union, Equifax, or Experian. Give them your police report number and ask for a 7 year Fraud Alert on your credit. This means that no one can open credit in your name, without contacting the phone number that you give them. All that is needed is a police report, stating that your personal information was taken.
3) WHAT TO DO, IF YOU GET PHYSICALLY ATTACKED–If someone physically attacks you, you have no choice but to defend yourself. I suggest always keeping a weapon, such as pepper spray, in your hand while walking in isolated areas. Pepper spray is legal and its easy to hold in your hand, discreetly. It does you no good, if it's in the bottom of your purse and someone takes your purse. If you have no weapons and you're being physically assaulted, try to scratch your assailant in the face. This makes them easily identifiable, when the police begin their search. Bloody scratch marks in one's face, is usually a good clue that they were involved in something nefarious! If you scratch them on the arms, or body, you can get their DNA under your nails. Everything goes of course, if you're fighting for your life. Bite them, gouge them in the eyes, use your weapon, do whatever you can to get away and scream. Screaming will alert others, that you're being attacked and hopefully they will help you, or call the police. Don't scream fire, because you will only confuse people. Scream for help and scream to have someone call for the police!
CHASE'S TIPS FOR AVOIDING A CAR JACKING: 1) Keep your doors locked at all times, when you're in or out of vehicle; 2) Remove the keys from the ignition, when pumping gas; 3) Don't leave your purse, or other valuables in plain view when exiting the vehicle; 4) Leave plenty of space in front of you when pulling up to stop signs, or red lights, in case you have to make an evasive action.; 5) If you pull up to an intersection and someone starts approaching your vehicle and you feel threatened, run the red light, after making sure no traffic is coming. It's better to risk getting a traffic ticket, than to stay in an unsafe position.; 6) Know that most car jackings occur when you're parking and exiting the vehicle. This can be in a gas station, garage, or on the street. Be extra alert at these times.; 7) If you're surrounded, or someone approaches with a weapon and demands your car, do not resist. Give them your car and immediately contact 911, as soon as possible. Your car is insured and can always be replaced. Your life can't. (First published in Chicago Star).
Chicago Pride Month is always filled with fun-filled celebrations to honor the LGBTQ community. One of my favorites is hosted by Tom Kehoe is his Old Town neighborhood. You never know who will show up, last year Governor Pritzker and his First Lady MK, were guests. This year, his magical home showed off the design skills that he and his companies are known for. Spray painted, Pride-colored, over-sized palm fronds filled every container throughout the space. Colorful, oversized Pride banners out front directed party-goers to the main event. In the beautifully landscaped backyard, Pride banners were used as sun shields and were draped from the roof to the back fence. A DJ standing behind a Pride-colored table kept the beats alive as servers presented tasty treats on, you guessed it, Pride colored dishes and cups. It was such a colorful day spent with colorful friends. Love you Tom.
The Chicago Children's Choir's "Red Jacket Optional" event returns on Saturday, October 16. It hasn't been determined whether or not it will be in-person, virtual or a hybrid. Live music and exceptional dining are always hallmarks of this evening which celebrates 65 years of bringing youth and communities together for a stronger future. (Check here for details)
The Auditorium Theatre Auxiliary Board will host its annual Devil’s Ball on Friday, August 27. It's the first public event at the theatre since its temporary closure in March of 2020. All proceeds will benefit the restoration and preservation of the National Historic Landmark Auditorium Theatre. This year's event, themed Roaring Back, will be held on the theatre's stage and feature Gatsby-themed cocktails, fabulous nosh, live jazzy tunes, a photo booth, silent auction, wine raffle, behind-the-scenes tours, a surprise pop-up performance and dancing beneath the architectural brilliance of the theatre! Ronald McDonald House Charities will host its annual gala Saturday, August 7. Presented by HAVI and Wintrust, the nonprofit's premier fundraising event will feature gourmet cuisine, live entertainment, live and silent auctions and a one-of-a-kind experience, all to support programs that enable families with sick or injured children (worldwide) stay together and near leading hospitals and healthcare services. The Service Club of Chicago will present its annual "Day on the Terrace' fashion show/fundraiser, this year themed "Here Comes the Sun," Monday, Aug. 2, 11am at The Geraghty. The event will be chaired by SC vets Jean Antoniou, Tracey Tarantino DiBuono and Sharyl Mackey. The show, produced by ZZAZZ productions, will offer a first look at fall fashion from some of the city's top retailers and local designers. Maryville Academy will host its second Wine Tasting and Garden Tour, to benefit Maryville's Jen School, on Saturday, August 7, at the Des Plaines campus on 1150 N. River Road. Each guest will pay $35 to sample wines, enjoy appetizers, tour the Jen School garden and more. Maryville Jen School, founded in 2007, was selected by the National Association of Special Education Teachers (NASET) as a NASET School of Excellence for eight years in a row. It is the only school in the country that offers vocational education for young children with special learning needs. Can't you feel it? Along with Spring, comes a rebirth for Chicago too. It's been over a year now since the horrors of the pandemic began and we are all ready to begin anew without the P word hanging over our heads. I'm thrilled to hear laughter pouring out of our beleaguered restaurants and bars and I loved, loved, loved seeing a few lucky people at the Cubs opener. I'm so glad to see people back in movie theaters again too, albeit socially

distanced. (Godzilla vs Kong is fabulous at AMC River East (600 N. Michigan), a great surprise ending, as is Courier with Benedict Cumberbatch). I think good weather and sunshine are powerful healers as well as having Covid shots opened up for everyone now (aged 16 and older). As of April, data from the CDC tallied over 150,000,000 vaccine doses were administered across the U.S. I know I'm feeling safer and had no qualms whatsoever about getting away for a vaca in February. Recently, I even renewed our passports and made sure we had vaccine certifications just in case. Who knows the places we all might go when things really open up for good? Right? I know we've been dreaming of "getting back to normal" for a long time now but I fear our ideas of normal might never return. Already, nonprofits have seen the benefits of having virtual events at no-to-low costs, opening up their mission to people they would've never reached before, having easier access to celebs and entertainment who only need to

zoom in and having the ability to be very creative–all assets in this brave, new world. Granted, in-person events are slowly returning too, but the packed ballrooms of old might be a thing of the past–along with handshakes. I think our future events will be fabulous hybrids with virtual and in-person components combined. I know we have all learned a lot of new tricks this past year, like the importance of a good ring light, having a great background and comfortable sweat pants. And honestly, I don't think I'll ever be able to wear my high heels again. (But you know I'll try!) As I mentioned in my last blog, I cleared my closet of overly fancy gowns and dresses. If and when they ever come back again, I believe the look will be outer space chic so they wouldn't work anyway. I have learned the importance of a great book and have been reading now more than ever! Even though I'm not a big history buff, Erik Larson's (of "Devil in the White City" fame) recent book, "The Splendid and the Vile: A Saga of Churchill, Family, and Defiance During the Blitz," was riveting. I couldn't put it down….Another great book is, "The Rose Code" by Kate Quinn. It's based on true stories of those wacky, wonderful, wise, secret-keeping code-breakers of England's Bletchley Park during WWII. And although my reading skills have increased during the past year, my cooking skills, sadly, have stayed the same. My sister-in-law, Nancy Steinwald,

The Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum hosted a fascinating discussion, "New Year, New You" with legendary fashion designer Norma Kamali recently. She discussed her new book, "I Am Invincible" and shared so many valuable tips for surviving and thriving through the decades as well as helpful advice for living a healthy lifestyle. The zoom presentation opened with welcoming remarks from Justina Doyle, the Museum's member relations manager. She wrote a notebook filled with tips about turning 50 and her publisher convinced her to expand it into a book. Her interest in a healthy lifestyle began during the AIDS epidemic when she lost so many friends to the disease. She then realized the importance of a healthy immune system so she immersed herself in learning about how to go about achieving this, including realizing the power of plants and herbs in our diets. In 1967, she opened her first Kamali store in NYC selling clothing brought from London. The next year, she began designing her own pieces. Steak 48 Chicago will team up with Chef Art Smith's nonprofit, Common Threads, on Sunday, April 25 (11:30 am –12:30 pm). Chef Brian Key will demo how to create the perfect steak and give viewers tips and recipes for doing it at home. Steak 48 is donating 100% of the proceeds to Common Threads, an organization dedicated to providing cooking and nutrition education programs for kids (and families) across the country. Thanks to Heather Spyra for alerting me to the Richardson Adventure Farm TULIP FESTIVAL, going on now! If there ever was a great road trip idea, this is it! Richardson Adventure Farm in Spring Grove, Illinois, is welcoming guests to its first ever Tulip Festival open now through May. 300,000 bulbs in 30 different varieties will provide a colorful backdrop for all your Insta-fun in addition to its beautiful lakeside location and seemingly endless amenities. Cindy McCain will keynote the Rush Woman's Board's virtual Spring Luncheon.
The Woman's Board of Rush University Medical Center will host its first virtual Spring Luncheon on Tuesday, May 11, featuring keynote speaker Cindy McCain, a humanitarian, business leader and chairperson of The McCain Institute. Co-chaired by Katie Frekko and Brooke Kuehnle, the luncheon will begin at 11:45 am with a musical welcome followed by introductions before a Q&A with McCain. Funds raised at the luncheon will be directed to Rush Medical Center’s education, research and community service programs, as well as to its 2021 principal project, The Woman’s Board Fund for Precision Oncology Research. THEY'RE BAAAAACKKKKK!!! More than 70 animatronic dinosaurs are ready to return from extinction to delight families and dino fans everywhere, as Jurassic Quest Drive Thru, the nation’s largest and most realistic dinosaur experience, returns to Chicago (to NOW Arena in Hoffman Estates), July 9-25. This fun-filled drive-thru experience has it all for fans of the Jurassic and Triassic Ages, from baby dinos held by its trainer to meet-and-greets, photo opps, a choose-your-own-audio adventure tour and more. Jurassic Quest's herd of animatronic dinos are displayed in realistic scenes that allow guests to experience them roaring and moving as they drive through the tour. For the past 28 years, Bear Necessities Pediatric Cancer Foundation has hosted the annual Bear Tie Ball. This event is the nonprofit's largest fundraiser of the year, empowering them to bring joy and hope to children battling cancer. Although this year looks different, families continue to need their support. Friday, April 9 was Hugh Marston Hefner's 95th (heavenly) birthday. The memories I have of Playboy and Hef will last me several lifetimes and beyond. I've been dabbling on a book but who knows what will happen with it. All I know is that I miss him so and am so appreciative of the life he's given me. I wrote a sort of love letter to him here in Chicago Star Media. I hope you like it.

New Year's Eve looked a little different this year. Besides Covid changing the landscape of the entire world, it also kept us from celebrating the end of one of the worst years in recent memory. Restaurants missed out on much needed revenue, friends missed traditional celebrations with family and Times Square was eerily empty. People could only peek out their windows like Jimmy Stewart in "Rear Window" trying to get a feel for what was happening outside. We are all still on lockdown, mentally and physically. unlimited champagne and cocktails, swimming in the pool or lounging in the grotto. Guests were encouraged to wear lingerie which definitely added to the excitement. Some girls' interpretations of the "suggested attire" left little to the imagination. Oh, those were truly the days! I'm happy to see Playboy doing so well online now too. Even though the magazines have physically disappeared, the brand's online presence is strong and growing. I'm so happy to still have them as a family too. Here's to another 68 years and to a bigger, brighter 2021 for us all!
I quizzed some of my favorite bold-faced names to see how they were handling the pandemic, what their NYE resolutions were, their best moments of 2020, hopes for the future and any advice that might give us some inspiration. I discovered that we all have more in common than we know. I hope you enjoy these enlightening, and in some cases, surprising, comments from some of my favorite Chicago notables.

favorite moment, "When they finally took Texas off the travel ban list and I was able to see my 86 year-old mother who I had not seen since last year because of the pandemic. It warmed my heart. I needed my mommy. It doesn't matter how old you are." Her NYE resolution? "To live in the moment!" Her advice? "Everyone is going through something, respect and try not to judge."

Kathy O'Malley Piccone, the hostess with the mostest at Gibson's Steakhouse, said her favorite moments during the pandemic were "when people started to reach out to each other, sending texts, jokes, puzzles, flowers, delicious foods from local restaurants and the wonderful 'calm app.'' She said, "Most of all, just sending love and positive vibes to each others. Touching moments that brought me to tears every evening at 8 pm throughout the city [when people serenaded the healthcare workers]." Her NYE resolution is to "spread more kindness, more love and generosity, more understanding of one another, more courage and peace and be more in the moment."
Amanda Puck, Director Strategic Brand Development Mariano's, has worked in the food industry for a long time. She shared,

"Through the pandemic, it was great to see organizations and individuals step up and help the community more than ever! Both the Greater Chicago Food Depository and Northern Illinois Food Bank have worked so hard feeding the community, as well as all the local food pantries across Chicagoland." During the isolation she learned "how to make a mean arancini from Chef Tony Priolo, delicious Mac & Cheese from Chef Brian Jupiter and taste more wines with Belinda Chang all via our Mariano's meet-ups and zoom classes." Her NYE resolution? "To read more! She has started with Julia Child's "My Life in France." Amanda said, "I admire her, she started and blossomed in her career later in life. She's an epic legend in our industry." She added a quote from one of her favorite authors Morgan Harper Nichols, 'Even if the wait carries on another year, I will not get where I am going without first learning to be here.'"

Melody Spann Cooper, Chair and CEO Midway Broadcasting Corp., said her favorite moment of 2020 was "when Joe Biden and Kamala Harris were declared the President and VP-Elect of the United States. I didn't realize how sleep deprived I had been over the past four years." Her NYE resolution is to "remain healthy and helpful. I'm making a commitment to 365 days of giving. Every day I plan to intentionally give something that will help someone." Her hope for the future? "I hope for healing and restoration. Restoring health to those who have been impacted by the pandemic. Restoring compassion in all of humanity and restoring Chicago to the great city we love. It's not perfect, but in its imperfection, it's still home and a place that has allowed me to dream past my zip code."

favorite moment of 2020 was being able to squeeze in a last minute trip to Hawaii during Pearl Harbor Remembrance Day. His hopes for next year are a "quick return to normalcy, especially for my friends in the hospitality industry who truly have had a rough go of it." His words of advice, "This too shall pass."

Another handsome friend, Mark Olley (Co-op Lending Manager, Chicago Financial Services), said, "No matter what hand we've been dealt, we adapt, we flourish, it's who we are, it's what we do, we're CHICAGO STRONG!" Mark discovered new skills during the pandemic, as many of us did. He enjoyed learning to cook, plant and tend to a vegetable garden and credits his husband and dog Grayson for keeping him sane. Mark says, "I always lead with hope, optimism and love." His dream for 2021 is good health and an end to Covid-19. "A positive mind and outlook, no matter how trying the circumstances, helps to get us through a lot."
Yolanda "Dusty" Stemer, philanthropist, member of Service Club of Chicago, Costume Council and others, said that two of her three sons had mild cases of Covid and both recovered rapidly."Things like this makes you realize and give credit to our healthcare workers." Her NYE resolution is to "not turn that Peloton into a clothes rack!" Her hopes for 2021, "The same as everyone, to get a vaccine to all of our loved ones and free Botox for all!" Dusty is married to Dr. Alex Stemer, who is deeply involved in treatment, research and prevention of Covid. "There is light at the end of the tunnel. Recent advances will help make 2021 much better than 2020…Tomorrow is promised to no one, and the one thing Covid steals from us is time with those we love," she said.

for this year's Eversight IllinoisGift of Sight Celebration told me her title should be "a girl who never gives up." She's a good friend and I can tell you I have never met anyone so tenacious and driven (in a very good way). She said 2020 was a time of total renewal for her. She regained mobility "by some miracle" [she suffered from MS for years and years] and "connected deeply" with her dearest friends. Her NYE resolution is to "cry when things make me happy or sad and to feel and live my life to the fullest, no pretending anything." Her motto? "Be in love with your life every single minute. My grandma passed away this December at age 98 and she was the strongest, toughest, most loving person who never complained about anything she had to live through. To be alive is to be in love…with your life," she said.

Sherrill Bodine, author, president of the Service Club of Chicago and philanthropist, said her favorite moment of the last year was "working with the dedicated women of the Service Club who worked tirelessly through these challenging times to raise money for our Philanthropic Fund which will be given out in 2021 to worthy charities all over Chicago." Sherrill recently lost her husband and said her resolution is "to seek the light and find my way on this new journey without John." She always greets each day with hope and vows to "never surrender."

married the love of his life, Trover Gray Wilson, in a ceremony at City Hall. "The pandemic didn't allow us a large in-person celebration but I'm hoping 2021 will!" He said his resolution is "to realize that resolutions aren't a good idea. Usually it becomes the first disappointment of any new year for me." He hopes that when the pandemic ends, that people will treat each other better. His words of advice? "Eat well, appreciate the small things and learn one new thing a day."

An icon in the dance world, Nan Giordano, artistic director Giordano Dance Chicago, is looking forward to "launching Illuminate the Possibilities, an initiative which represents global connection, unity, positivity and possibility, all through dance." She said, "Amidst our dim world light I have chosen to focus on the many silver linings that have immersed. I hope we learn and grow and take the many challenging circumstances and make something positive out of them. Mankind and peace, front and center!" Her motto? "Today is the day! Adversity creates strength and change brings opportunity."

She said, "2020 made me slow down, so for 2021 I will continue to not rush myself and live in the present and enjoy my surroundings. I want to focus more on fitness and travel when it's safe to do so." She added, "During these rough times, I have learned to be more patient. I also will take this time to work on things that I was too busy for previously, in life and business."

crying and I think that is because we have each other. Yanni, Sal, Cristiano, Luis, Jessica, Nicole, Jeremy and Angelo are all such incredible human beings. My favorite moment hands down has been seeing them flourish and fight all the challenges." As far as resolutions, "I don't believe in resolutions to be honest. I live my life out loud, with empathy and compassion always and when I get something wrong, I own it. And that is year round." Her advice going forward: "I think I now live with the knowledge that life truly can change so fast. It has really affirmed for me that I need to take a moment every day to be grateful for all that I have and for making it this far." Her words of advice? "Let's stop tearing at one another and, instead, extend helpful hands and grateful hearts towards each other."
Holly Buckendahl, CEO Ronald McDonald House Charities of Chicagoland & NW Indiana, said a silver lining, that she didn't expect, was the ability to stay connected virtually with family and friends. Her hope for the coming year? "While open through the pandemic (with many restrictions), I look forward to RMHC-CNI reinstating the full breadth of services critically ill children and their families need on their journey to heal together." Her advice during these tough times comes from professor, social worker and author Brene Brown who said, "In order to empathize with someone's experience, you must be willing to believe them as they see it and not how you imagine their experience to be."

despite a tough year filled with personal losses, was being able to be "immersed" with all of her kids. She and her husband Chris discovered that "love and connectedness is truly the most important thing." She said, "I really need to find a hobby. I'm a wife, a mom to 6 awesome kids, run a company and I don't really have something that I do just for me. I might finally give meditation a try or yoga, to have a space to be mindful in body and spirit."

Jennifer Sutton Brieva, felt that Christmas was one of her favorite moments of 2020. She said "it was a much needed shift in energy for everyone. We need that all year long." Her hopes for 2021? "To learn from 2020 and never take people or experiences for granted again and to get back into pre-Covid shape!" Her words of advice? "People need to be grateful and embrace the simple pleasures of life that have become so very vital." I am so grateful for a FaceTime call with my parents, happy hour Zoom with dear friends, a classic movie with my cat Zoe or even a walk in Lincoln Park or a dance party in the kitchen with my husband Joaquin–those every day opportunities for joy often overlooked become special moments of connection, never to be taken for granted again."

"I got my travel fix, after this, by hitting the road to Michigan a couple of times to see the sunset from the other side. I'm a big "sunset" person and try to find them wherever I go," she added. "I hope for better days for the world, where jobs and prosperity return, where we can hug each other, sing and dance with each other while enjoying live music in our favorite venues or in that dark bar with the awesome jukebox, where we can travel the world again, enjoy a cold one and the crack of the bat at a baseball game, enjoy family gatherings, weddings, celebrations, our favorite restaurants, happy hour with friends and escape through live theater."
Another dear friend in media is Dori Wilson, publicist/founder Dori Wilson Public Relations. Her favorite moment of 2020 was "watching a racially diverse movement develop and grow in recognition of long-standing racial inequality and injustice in this country, watching individuals and corporations commit to do better and recognition of "we're all in this together." Her NY resolution? "To actually use my Peloton!" Her hope for 2021? "I am so hopeful for a vaccination and a vacation!"…..Words of wisdom? "Laughter is the best medicine and forgiveness runs a close second!"
The editor-in-chief of Cancer Wellness magazine, Caylei Vogelzang, said the best moment of 2020 was being able to spend more time with her family on the golf course. Her NYE resolutions include learning to do the splits 3 ways and a backward walkover; improve on physical fitness assessments; visit a yoga retreat; grow and expand her magazine and "become more of an essential source for those touched by cancer"; plan a family holiday to a national park; wear more pieces from local designers and sustainable fashion and practice gratitude daily and more meditation. The words she lives by is "exercise, exercise, exercise!"

moment of 2020 was presenting the Black Harvest Film Festival. She said, "The timing could not have been better. It was so great to have a month of celebrating Black stories, the joy felt virtually was a much needed balm to a turbulent year." Her hopes for 2021? "That everyone gets vaccinated ASAP, and that we all be together again. I think I will turn into a hugging machine as soon as it is safe." Her advice? "Count your blessings and share your gifts."

She also found joy in the hiring of four new people for her 5 year-old business. In 2021, she plans on prioritizing her own health and to invest in herself in ways she never has. Her motto? "Every day is a new day. Every morning we wake up with a new chance. I truly believe the energy you give out is what comes back to you. Despite all of the negativity around us, never lose hope. We will get through this!"

Pamella Capitanini, philanthropist, Service Club of Chicago, loved watching people's inventiveness during 2020 as many learned new ways to pivot. She said, "From drive-by birthday celebrations, mask creativity and eating in igloos, it was amazing and inspiring to see." Her NYE resolution: "To keep smiling and do my best! And remember the front line workers who have given all and those who have left us." She added, "I believe many of us have realized that nails, hair and party dresses don't make a difference, but reaching out to one another does!"

North Pole, had much to be thankful for in 2020. "This holiday season is one for the history books that I hope we never have to repeat, but we were able to create a spark of joy for young and old." His favorite moments included: "Elfing" at 900 North Michigan Shops; Sending Elf Gram video messages with proceeds benefiting Imerman Angels (Tommy is a cancer survivor); Being hired to pop into 5 Zoom calls from around the world; Appearing on "Around Town with Ana Belaval", "Happy Hour with the Hoovers", WGN radio with Paul Lisnek, Tom Skilling's Christmas Eve and so much more. His NYE resolution is to: "Pause, reset, reorganize, reflect, be prepared, be ready, be thankful and be kind." His advice? "You can't grow from NO. It's okay to say no when it doesn't feel right, but saying no all the time will lead you nowhere. Try not to take things too seriously, none of us get out of here alive. And appreciate what you have."

Board president Joyce Winnecke (just love her!) called this gift an "affirmation of YWCA Metropolitan Chicago's strategy."

Former Chicago Bear Israel "Izzy" Idonije has lifted charitable giving to an art form. For the 6th year in a row, Izzy and his IF Charities team hosted "Shop With a Cop", a great initiative that builds trust between CPD officers and the communities they serve. On Thursday, December 17, more than 60 police officers shopped for kids in need, who had submitted a wish list "for Santa" in advance. The officers picked up items that were donated by Target with special $50 gift certificates included for family dinners donated by Jewel. One of my favorite silver linings to this pandemic mess is the fact that our animal shelters are at their lowest point with un-adopted rescues! As a matter of fact, PAWS Chicago has reported a near record number of adoptions in 2020–4,100! Through their Holiday-Adopt-a-Thon and usual grassroots efforts, they have managed to find forever homes for 4100 DOGS AND CATS! Can I get a Woot! Woot!? PAWS Chicago also provides extensive resources to help pets make a seamless transition into their news home and also provides a lifetime safety net for every animal, ensuring that if something happens to the adopter, their PAWS pet will always be cared for. I'm hearing similar good news from One Tail at a Time and also Young at Heart Senior Pet Rescue–all my favorites and much recommended animal shelters. We recently experienced Six Flags' Holiday in the Park Drive-Thru in Gurnee. Over 3 million lights illuminate the park as cars drive through at 3 mph. We ordered hot chocolate, a funnel cake and I bought an ornament (of course). We listened to piped in holiday music and it was sort of eerie, to be honest, and had the feel of driving through a deserted theme park in the Truman Show. However, I guess if we'd lived closer, the experience would've been a little easier and better. But, frankly, driving through the park with the Notre Dame game blasting on the radio might've had something to do with my lack of enthusiasm (although Chuck was certainly entitled to cheer on his favorite team!) As I close out my first blog of 2021, I must say, I am glad to leave 2020 (far) behind. I've never had a worse year and I know many of my friends feel the same. There's was no "dashing through the snow on a one horse open sleigh, o'er the fields we go, laughing all the way"…… Not this year when everything in the world changed in the blink of a Covid eye. I couldn't even get in my usual cheery mood for Christmas, at least not in the way I used to. One minute, we're planning family gatherings, figuring out seating, who will sit at the kids' table and the next thing you know, we're all Zooming in to "celebrate" on computer screens. I found myself decorating for Christmas almost manically, trying to create much needed joy that is at a premium now. I know store

And, although families couldn't carry on life-long traditions of dining there during the season, they could still order carry-out–the famous Mrs. Hering's Chicken Pot Pie (recipe here), lobster bisque, Frango Mint

Chocolate Ice Cream Pie and more. For Chuck and me, we still tried to carry on family traditions. We baked my mom's ham (Cooks only) and I fixed Mama Mary Johnson's famous sweet potato pie (whose recipe was featured in Ann Gerber's 1985 book, "Chicago's Sweet Tooth."). I also cooked the requisite black-eyed peas for good luck on New Year's Day (I pray it works). We toasted to the loved ones we lost and prayed for a better future, one that will bring back the human element and social interaction that is necessary to the survival of a species. We can't drift apart. We need "parties for hosting, marshmallows for toasting and caroling out in the snow," now more than ever. Here's hoping this year is off to a great start for you!

Friends of Prentice (FOP), a non-profit organization working in partnership with Northwestern Medicine Prentice Women’s Hospital to fund innovative and leading-edge research benefiting the lives of women, raised nearly $600,000 at its annual fundraising benefit, themed Still Together, At Home. The CSO's recent "Sounds of Celebration: An Evening at Home with the CSO", a virtual event, was a blockbuster raising over $910,000 (and counting) on October 31! Musical stars from around the world reflected on what makes the CSO so special with superstar cellist Yo-Yo Ma creating an evening highlight during his duet with fellow cellist Dara Hankins, a Civic Orchestra member. Chiming in from Ravenna, Italy, CSO music director Riccardo Muti said, "I'm waiting until the orchestra can be together again…My family, my music family, is the Chicago Symphony so practically, I am sort of a father without the family around." He thinks the reunion will be "like a miracle" with the "feelings of every person coming together to create something really magical." At the 20th annual WINGS' Purple Tie Ball on October 3, 400 attendees came together virtually to end domestic violence, celebrate survivors and support victims. The event featured the band Maggie Speaks and guests listened to impassioned speeches about the scourge of domestic violence and the ways that WINGS

is working to break the cycle in the Chicagoland area. Rebecca Darr, WINGS President/CEO said, “We are overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of the attendees of the Purple Tie Ball. Your generosity will support so many families who are escaping domestic violence.” Jillvona accepted the David K. Hill award, an award given to an outstanding WINGS graduate each year. 80 guests received a "Gala in a Bag," delivered by the Entertaining Company that included dinner, wine, hand sanitizer, chocolates and a program book. The funds raised, over $325,000, will help support WINGS' mission to provide housing, integrated services, education and advocacy to end domestic violence.
On October 29, the Chinese American Service League (CASL) honored its founder and former President Bernie Wong, with the Lifetime Achievement Award during its annual Gala (presented virtually this year by the Sue Ling Gin Foundation). Starting with two
donated desks and chairs in 1978, Bernie grew CASL into the largest social service agency in the Midwest dedicated to serving Chinese Americans and immigrants. Bernie has been named in numerous lists of influential people in Chicago and beyond, even being awarded the “Champion for Change” award at the White House in 2012 by President Barack Obama. The event was emceed by ABC-7's Judy Hsu (co-chair of CASL's Advisory Board) and included congratulatory videos from Father Francis Li, Esther Wong, Kenneth Gunn (Acting Commissioner at Chicago Human Relations), Ling and Francis Leung, Pauline Pak,Lois Chan, Amy Wishnick and many others. Congrats Bernie for your lifetime of service!

I don't know if you read the New York Social Diary but it's one of my favorites, especially writer Blair Sabol. Her wit and wisdom is always spot on and I particularly loved her latest column that pretty much nails the way some of us might be feeling now (at least it does for me). "An endless fatigue has set in that is making us feel lax even with last week’s viral resurgence. We are losing interest, so our masks are slipping below our nose and our vigilance is faltering. It’s getting old and we are getting older. Remember last March when we were all in it to win it? Nightly we banged pots in our cities from apartment windows for all medical first responders. That seems years ago. We’ve gone from cheers to jeers. We’ve morphed from impatience to rage to exhausted disinterest." But we're trying Blair! (Read her full column here).

I found it interesting to learn that a few of NYC's hotspot restaurants are adding new locations in Palm Beach. Swifty's, our favorite, has completely decamped to PB where it has found a second life under the watchful eye of Robert Caravaggi (lunch and dinner poolside only for now). Le Bilboquet will be opening there soon and La Goulue Palm Beach has already opened for dinner only.
Chicago Star Mediawill host its first Streeterville Week, a community-focused event that will spotlight and support local businesses, all of which will be offering exclusive deals. The event was created to lift community spirits, boost morale and encourage residents and visitors to shop locally. Join them (and me) for a fun-filled kick-off event at Ogden Plaza (300 E. North Water) from 12:30 to 2 pm. A series of deals will be on offer during the week at gyms, hotels and other neighborhood businesses plus special menus at restaurants. For the kick-off, Marley Kayden of "Chicago's Best" on WGN-TV will serve as emcee, which will be live-streamed on the Chicago Star Media Facebook page and open to the public. The program, designed to support local artists and brighten this normally gray area of Streeterville, features rotating appearances from Chicago performers and street musicians, including actor Vikram Konkimalla — known for his role as Tiny Tim in The Goodman Theatre's "A Christmas Carol "— and Andrew David, a street performer whose powerful cover of “Hallelujah” in Chicago’s empty streets went viral this spring. To ensure the safety of attendees and performers during the walk-by event, masks are required, signs indicating social distancing will be placed in front of performers. Each performer will display a QR code to receive tips from passersby. Participating Streeterville Week restaurants will include Beatrix Market, Tallboy Taco, Pinstripes, Cupitol Coffee & Eatery, Labriola, Pinched on the River, Robert’s Pizza and Dough Company, Rosebud Steakhouse, Saigon Sisters and Yolk, among others. The restaurants in and around Gibson's and LuxBar got a treat Wednesday night, courtesy of the Shannon Rovers who marched and played much to the delight of diners. Their intent was to "bring a smile to people's faces and a little happiness during these trying times." They succeeded.
Kudos to Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, whose boundless energy has now taken her into the pulpit! Recently, Maria delivered a stem-winding speech at Holy Trinity Church during Polish Heritage Month (watch it here) and she went head-to-head with radio talk show host Maze Jackson, where she discussed how taxpayers can protect their homes and find lost owed back taxes. This event is usually a very festive black-tie affair, but this year it was held virtually from October 12-22. With the pop-up, the owners of DMen Tap are looking to keep the holiday tradition alive and bring in revenue during the pandemic, which has restaurants and bars across Chicago struggling to survive. If reports are true that Pfizer has found a vaccine for Covid (that will be ready by the end of the month?!), our collective prayers have been answered! I know we probably won't go back to "normal." Quite frankly, I'm not even sure what this means anymore. I do miss all of our in-person events, that's a given, but I also miss the little things like lingering in bookstores (when I could find one) or spending hours wandering around the make-up section in a department store and actually TRYING THINGS ON. worthwhile. I'm keeping busy writing The Blog (thanks to all my new subscribers too!), writing for Chicago Now and pondering some possibilities. I had a blast hosting the Apparel Industry Board Foundation'sRev Up event and would like to do more of that. I'd also like to discuss my events and what's going on in Chicago on some media outlets. I'm looking forward to a new venture with Tracey Tarantino DiBuono and videographer Troy Mairs that will be fun and fulfilling. In every case, I will continue to be a voice for Chicago, its charities, its happenings and whatever else is exciting and makes our city shine. Yes, despite Covid, the future is looking very bright. I can't wait to see what's around the next corner, hopefully a cure!
