Her work first skyrocketed with her luxury collection in the early 1990’s, which was found in esteemed boutiques like Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Ultimo and Saks. For years we kept getting better and better with our spay/neuter program and the euthanasia rate has just plummeted over the years. However, over this year and last year, the rate is starting to go up, which is very sad and alarming. This is happening because, since COVID, there has

been just so much disarray in people’s lives. Many people are having to give up their pets and our Animal Care and Control is inundated every day. During a lighthearted moment, he became the first astronaut to take a selfie in space. The photo went viral in 2017. Today, he is a spokesperson and advocate for many nonprofits, including the Navy Seal Foundation. Below is an excerpt from our Q&A: What's was one of your most awe-inspiring moments in space? And, yeah, that was what probably took my breath away; What was your scariest moment? “We had a spacewalk where my buddy and I were out IMG_5939there, and his spacesuit malfunctioned and there was water leaking inside his helmet and we had to hurry up and get back in. That was probably the scariest moment.”; With your unique perspective of the cosmos, do you think there's life on other planets? “I think that the universe is so giant, somewhere out there, there's life. We just don't know. I don't believe it's in our solar system, but in my opinion, it’s naive to think that it couldn't exist anywhere in the universe.”; What do you think about the civilians in space program and what advice would you give to those

train so intently, it’s not for the good day when everything goes by the plan, but it's for when things start breaking that you can save yourself, save the equipment, keep the thing alive, and your crew mates alive. So just have an appreciation for that and take the training seriously, because it's more than just an enjoyable ride. There's a lot to it.”; How did your training as a Navy SEAL help you as an astronaut? “The military does an amazing job, SEAL teams specifically, of preparing IMG_5934somebody to, in simple terms, walk, chew gum, talk on the radio, and make decisions all at the same time. You're dealing with a dynamic environment. Stuff in front of you is changing. You've got to talk on the radio, communicate that to somebody else, so that you have coordinated effort in that mission. All of that translates exactly to being an effective astronaut. So, I definitely

had some advantage with that training under my belt when I got there, but the NASA training is really good, and everybody gets up to that speed eventually.” The afternoon soiree included a Q&A with about 25 guests at the home of Muneer Satter and Kristen Hertel Satter. Invitees enjoyed mingling with Cassidy, taking photos, and a lavish lunch buffet before Cassidy answered further questions and shared his history in a delightful pavilion on the grounds that was situated in front of an infinity pool with a spectacular lake view in the background.  (Mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 13, when the Navy Seal Foundation hosts its 12th signature fundraiser, “Midwest Evening of Tribute,” at Navy Pier’s AON Grand Ballroom. Taylor Kinney

As many of you know, I absolutely adore the holidays! I would leave my decor up year round if I could and, as a matter of fact, do have a year-round cabinet filled with antique Christmas items that are too fragile for storage. I'm always curious what other people think about the holidays so I asked a few of my favorite celebrities and Chicago notables to answer a couple of questions for me. 1) What is your favorite gift to

receive?  2) What is your top gift to give? I was surprised and humbled by their thoughtful answers. Chicago Fire actor/hunk and all-around great guy Taylor Kinney loves to gift photographs. He says, "I enjoy shooting black and white photography on 35mm film. If I take a photo of someone and I like the way it turns out, I enjoy the process of

printing it and framing it and giving it to them. That to me is worth Page_1more than something I can buy at a store." I laughed when I read his response to the best gift he ever received. "It was the best and worst gift I've received. It was my first bike. When I was around 5 years-old, I asked Santa Claus for a motorcycle and he brought me something with training wheels. It was the worst because it didn't have a motor. I lost faith in Santa. In the end, I loved the bike because I learned how to ride but I never asked Santa for a motorcycle ever again," Taylor said. Love this/love HIM!

It was no surprise that her favorite gift to receive was a Pamella Roland scarf. The best gift she ever received though was from her daughter Cassandra who hand-knitted her one. She

Rick Kogan, writer/speaker extraordinaire.

One of my very favorite writers is Rick Kogan, who's had a column in the Chicago Tribune, among other publications, for a very long time. He writes about Rick-Kogan-at-Ancona-School-006Chicago in ways that make me weep. He doesn't strike me as the sentimental type but his answer about the best gift he's ever received made me think otherwise. "A kiss on the cheek and a silver dollar from a woman dressed as Mrs. Santa Clause at the bygone Tavern Club when I was 10, " he said. His favorite gift to give are "books of all kinds." He and his Kate Murray make such a beautiful pair. You should watch for his work in print, on the radio, TV…well, everywhere!

She said, "I'm a much better gift giver than a receiver. I love to give experiences, especially to my young nieces and nephews. I'll rarely buy them toys. My godson loves the theater so I Img_1241always take him to a show or a play. My niece loves sports so I get tickets to a Cubs or Bulls game. I personalize them to their interests. Those kind of gifts also guarantee quality time together beyond the holidays." She added, "Due to my career, I spent most of my adult life away from family and friends each holiday so the best gift I could ever receive now is being nearer to those I love most!" Just love her!

Justine Fedak says goodbye to BMO with this cast of characters!

Justine Fedak, a longtime corporate powerhouse is retiring. Well, not really, just moving on to her exciting next chapter that I'll get to in a minute. Her retirement party at BMO was a celebration of her long service and a testament to how loved she is. The room was packed with friends, fans and colleagues when confetti guns started firing! In marched every single sports mascot in Chicago to pay homage to Justine. I was proud to be there to witness all the love along with another FOJ,

Michael Caputo. Justine's next chapter involves launching her motivational speaking career. Being on the receiving end of some much needed Justine Advice, I highly recommend her and any and all services she will be providing! She said she has decided to "consciously uncouple" from corporate life and share her story that includes an MS (Multiple Sclerosis) diagnosis; managing mobility/chronic issues; suffering significant personal loss but yet still building an impactful career and a purpose-driven happy life. She's a recognized motivational speaker across the US/Canada. She is also co-principal, with Star Jones, of Instant Impact Group, focused on helping individuals and companies build their diversity, equity and inclusion mindset. Long may you reign Justine! Share Your Soles (2)Fortunately, most of us never have to experience what it feels like to go without shoes. Did you know that globally, 300 million children are denied education for the simple reason that they  do not own a single pair of shoes OR that women and children who walk miles for clean water, risk illness and amputation from infections caused by living in unsanitary conditions? For 20 years, the Share Your Soles Foundation has responded to

this need by distributing shoes to people living in underdeveloped communities across the globe.

The nonprofit was founded by Mona Purdy in 1999 following a trip to Guatemala where she saw little kids applying tar to the soles of their feet because their families couldn't afford shoes. Please join us on Friday, August 23 when this deserving organization celebrates its 20th anniversary (of doing good) at a Masquerade Party at Carnivale. 1819_musicman_Social_1200x1200_NEWI am MAD about Marian!! The Music Man, running now at the Goodman Theatre (thru August 18) is a nostalgic look back at small town America and reminded me just how much I miss my own little town of Dupo, Illinois. I went in expecting Robert Preston and I came out with a deep appreciation of this hard working cast led by Geoff Packard as Harold Hill and expertly directed by Mary Zimmerman. The choreography, the songs, the staging all took us back to a kinder, gentler time and we loved every minute of it. And even though I knew the story, I still cried when the marching band appeared. You shouldn't miss it! For tickets, $25-$142, click here!

The love in the room was palpable for fashion designer and hometown hero Peach Carr, three of her fellow Project Runway All Stars, and the nonprofit they came together to support, JourneyCare, the country's largest non-profit

organization providing hospice, home health, palliative and pediatric hospice care. The event at Theater on the Lake on Saturday, June 29 attracted an overflow crowd for an exciting fashion show presented by the All Stars of Project Runway designers Joshua Christensen, Johnathan Kayne Gillaspie, Korto Momolu, Christopher Palu and, of course, Peach! Joe Matty, president JourneyCare Foundation, opened the show by encouraging all of the clinical team members in the audience to stand and be recognized. He said, "Right now, we have around 1500 clinicians and care members taking

JourneyCare is there. We're a family and we take care of each other. Our promise is to meet the patients where they are, build trust and share a journey. JourneyCare has never turned anyone away due to inability to pay. Despite the benefits of these special programs, they are not reimbursable through Medicare, Medicaid or private insurance." Allison Rosati, of NBC-5, served as emcee. boots, gowns slit-up-to-there and plunging necklines. The show closed with a standing ovation as Peach showed her first collection following a horrible accident that left her wondering if she would ever be able to design again. Well, this show proved she could and in spades! The audience roared as every single new design made its appearance on the runway. From colorful cocktail dresses with the Chicago skyline outlined in jet black

When designing, Peach always asks herself, "Would Edie Sedgewick wear this?"…And the resounding answer is EVERYONE wants to wear this! For the finale, Peach sent her longtime "bestie" Camerone

brought in over $52,000 with the event raising approximately $200,000 for the nonprofit. For 40 years,  JourneyCare teams have served patients and families living with advanced illnesses so that each may live with dignity and comfort. It was a night I won't soon forget and a privilege to be in the room to witness the love and support for Peach, her fellow Project Runway designers who came out on her behalf, and this most deserving nonprofit.

Renaissance One's mission was to elevate these progressive artists while paying tribute to Chicago’s LGBTQ+ pioneers before the city’s 2019 Pride celebrations on June 30th. In 1970, following the Stonewall riots, a gay liberation AA_20190627_RenOne_0009organization formed at the University of Chicago and AA_20190627_RenOne_0017 sponsored a dance at the South Side’s Coliseum Annex which would become the first-ever public lesbian and gay dance event (aside from Halloween drag balls that were already happening). Following the dance, these energized organizers led a campaign to make the Normandy on Rush Street Chicago’s first gay bar to secure a license and permit same-sex dancing. Tracey Tarantino DiBuono with her late mom, Angie Tarantino.

A life well lived was the loving takeaway at the funeral of Tracey Tarantino DiBuono's dear mom, Angela "Angie" Tarantino on June 24. She passed away at age 92 and ran Tracey's ZZAZZ Productions office for over 25 years as well as being a force in the community. The service at The Shrine of Our Lady of Pompeii was a testimony to her popularity. It was filled to the brim with friends, family and loved ones. In lieu of flowers, donations in Angie's memory can be made to the Service Club of Chicago.

The late Lynda Silverman with her loving husband Howard.

More sad news with the passing of Lynda Silverman after her longtime battle with cancer. She was a dedicated member of the Service Club of Chicago and, during her 30 years with the nonprofit, she served in almost every officer's position. In recent years, she was the loving caretaker for her husband Howard who struggled with his own health challenges. She is survived by Howard and her daughter Mimi. She was a pillar in the Service Club and for all the other nonprofits she came in contact with.  RIP dear Lynda.

The late Phil Geier with his Julie.

We've lost a giant in the world of business and philanthropy with the passing of Phil Geier, loving husband of Julie Geier and brother-in-law to Chicago's own, Gayle Anthony, on June 19. I was so sorry to hear this sad news as Chuck and I got a chance to get to know him during our time together in Palm Beach. He and Julie were inseparable with him passing in her loving arms. They were a striking couple, handsome and beautiful with an encyclopedic knowledge of the world around them. Phil was the former chairman/CEO of The Interpublic Group of Companies and an avid art collector who served briefly on President George W. Bush's National Economic Council, in addition to a number of other affiliations and achievements. (Read his complete obit here). In Phil's memory, donations can be made to Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center.

Our Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas just keeps hitting 'em out of the ballpark! Lately, she partnered with Reverend Jesse Jackson and Operation Push to help Chicago seniors save their homes. Maria discovered that more than 7,600 suburban Cook County property owners are in line for property tax refunds! She is the hardest working public servant I know and we're so lucky to have her! Recently, Maria was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award from Operation Push. Congrats Maria! So deserving!

We attended the July 8 official opening night of Meredith Willson's "Music Man" at the Goodman Theatre and, even though I had visions of Robert Preston's iconic version in my head, this production (directed by Tony-Award winning director Mary Zimmerman) was a wonderfully nostalgic and delightful trip back to River City. The show has spectacular (and complicated) choreography, hum-able musical favorites and a superior cast. The opening night dinner honored Zimmerman's 25th anniversary as an Artistic Associate with the Goodman. The production headed for Broadway from here with Hugh Jackman playing the lead. See it before it leaves on August 18!

We're finally enjoying the summer we've been waiting for (and deserve!) here in Chicago and I hope everyone is having a chance to enjoy it. The July 4th celebrations made me so proud to live in the U.S.A. and the long weekend offered us a chance to enjoy good friends and fine weather along the lakefront. I love all the neighborhood celebrations too with friend Raleigh Chin noting that she could see fireworks popping up all around the city from her apartment. Why can't we just legalize them already and save everyone long trips to Indiana!? Just sayin'…..

Love, as always,

after we did a little research, we decided to experience it for ourselves on a recent trip to NYC. The program helps charities raise money using live auction packages of memorable vacation experiences. They include beach, city, mountain and international accommodations–everything from an estate on Lake Como to a private island in Belize and so much more! There's a reasonable reserve for the packages but

The Center bestowed its highest honor, the Humanitarian Laureate Award, on Nikki Haley, U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations (2017 – 2019), for her courage and compassion in protecting global human rights and the state of Israel. Ms. Haley and Mary Hart, SWC Trustee and TV personality, had an inspiring conversation on Haley’s upbringing in an Indian immigrant family and the struggle of being an “other” in American society. Haley shared how this experience made her stronger and to take true pride in being an American. Ms. Haley also discussed the current negative political atmosphere and articulated that while it’s bad, we should

I owned one in the 70s/80s but it disappeared and I've always hoped to find one again. I'm a collector too but, sadly, he wasn't willing to sell. However, he WAS willing to drive all the way from Kentucky, with fellow collector Russ Henning, to have me sign it. It was great to chat about the Golden Age of Playboy with like-minded fans like myself (and at least I have the photo.) Lol! Thanks for the memories Mike and Russ!

Face the Future Foundation (FFF) held its annual gala at the Four Seasons Hotel Chicago on March 23. This year’s event, themed "Under the Big Top," attracted 370 people and raised nearly $600,000 (including a generous $50,000 donation from the Chicago Title Bowl-a-thon fundraiser.) Gala proceeds benefit the UI Health Craniofacial Center for the care and treatment of children with cleft lip, cleft palate and other craniofacial conditions, for research and education and

Borris Powell

Designer Borris Powell bares his soul at his "Trapped" fashion show.

On March 24 at the Drake Hotel one of Chicago's most beloved fashion designers bared his soul through his #TRAPPED collection. It was an exciting fashion moment, as all of Borris Powell's' runway shows are, but it also came with a touchingly honest revelation on the life he's led. As a sellout crowd enjoyed his latest looks, a new line that transcends seasons and instead embraces them all (his Trans Season Collection), no one was aware of the pain Borris had kept from even his closest friends. In Borris' own #2words, "I feel that while this is my most favorite collection that I've ever designed, it was the most hurtful at the same time. I personally was going through a lot of disappointment, heartache, shame, feeling of loneliness, and so much more that started to lead to a bit of depression. For way too long I would hide these feelings out of shame, or the fact that I thought I would scare friends and clients away. Going to different events and being out, I got very good at acting as if I was on top of the world and I was living the

most amazing life. You know what they say. 'Fake it until you make it'  or 'Keeping up with the Jones.' Living the constant lie and then coming back to my reality became unbearable for me. Before too long, I was living a #trapped life. Pretending to be what everyone had come to expect me to be based on the type of garments that I make and the events that I attend, was eating at me. Because that was far from the life that I was truly living. There was a time that I was living out of a car that my

dad had given me. See, I didn't even have an address, but yet I was attending lavish events and brushing shoulders with some of the most wealthiest. At times, at these events, it could have been my only true meal that day. It was 8 months living like this before I was able to climb my way out of the darkness. But the damage had

already been done. It would take me some time to be able to direct this hurt and pain that almost took me down a path of no return and make it into a message. I have to give credit to music once again for saving my life. One day I heard a song that grabbed me. Then that song led me to two more. Ultimately, these three songs started to give me a sense of purpose. From there, visions. Then it started to make more and more sense. I was feeling trapped within a life that I worked so hard to build." He added, " I just hope that by me telling my truth, I can help #333take some of the shame away and save someone else that might

not see a way out, and or, make more of us aware of the hurt that our loved ones are going through. If we pay closer attention, maybe we can save someone that isn't as strong in that moment, or doesn't have an outlet to work out the darkness." (For 24 hour depression helpline, click here) The collection and Borris received multiple standing ovations. There were lots of tears but Borris is coming out of the darkness and taking his true place in the world–a place where love is more important than money and the truth will always set you free. Love and thank you for your honesty Borris. I bet there are more people living like this than you know. You are never alone. (Save October 19 for Borris' next big show!)

The entertainment couldn't have been better as the incredible and beautiful Molly Callinan (who also serves as the lead singer for Gary Sinise & Lt. Dan Band!!) sang her heart out onstage. There were welcoming remarks from Dan as well as the managing partner of Truluck's Andrea Gentry. The spring decor and magnificent ice sculpture made the event even more special as we mixed and mingled with friends that included Paul Iacono, Andrea Schwartz, Laura Schwartz (who is soon to be Laura Schwartz Santiago), Michael Caputo, Ken Norgan, Matt Olaveson,

Popular Paul Iacono celebrates his BD with friends.

I don't know anyone who celebrates birthdays like Chicago's own Paul Iacono (president Chicago Dowel Company) And, it's through no fault of his own, he just has so damn many friends who want to celebrate with him! I bet he goes out every night for a month or more. For this year's fete, Frances Renk and Todd Hatoff planned a very memorable evening that began at Todd's elegant condo on Lake Shore

Lucky guests included Jennifer and Dr. Joaquin Brieva, Jeff Shea and his wife Melissa, Chris Renk, Chuck, Sherry Lea Holson, Kadmiel Christmas and Dede Lubeznik. Following cocktails at Todd's, we headed over to the new Lincoln Park hotspot, Avli Taverna(1335 W. Wrightwood). This Greek restaurant is an offshoot of the one in suburban Winnetka, both owned

by Louie Alexakis. The Lincoln Park spot includes sportscaster Lou Canellis as part of the crew. He greeted us warmly, along with his glam wife Monica (with baby in tow). It's a family spot for sure with delicious dishes that include great small plates and mains like moussaka tselementes (a 1910 casserole recipe of roasted lamb, bechamel, eggplant and potatoes). A Greek Feast BBQ Lamb requires a 24 hour pre-order. Everything was DELICIOUS with a capital D! Happy BD Paul and thanks for Avli, Louis and Lou!

Blog 1 - Russell Crowe Film star and Oscar winner Russell Crowe tweeted to his 250,000 followers: "Rode from Algonquin to Lake Geneva (WI). Beautiful place, my first ever visit to Wisconsin. If you are in the area, check out Baker House." Blog 2 - Baker House Well, it just so happens my darling friend, Bethany, OWNS Baker House and this is her report: "Last night (8/25), Russell Crowe arrived (unannounced) at our new restaurant, The Baker House, in Lake Geneva, WI. He came in with two male friends and asked to be seated in our lakefront garden. They were hungry and seemed a bit tired…evidently, turns out he and his two male companions had biked from Algonquin, Blog 3 - Versailles Turret Luxury Suite Illinois, to Lake Geneva, 40 miles, and then spent the day trekking around our scenic 28-mile lake! Russell said it was his FIRST VISIT EVER TO WISCONSIN and Blog 4 thought it was beautiful, and when he left he tweeted to his fans that if ever in the area, they should check out the Baker House! Our staff all wear costumes set in the 1890's through 1920's and Russell was amused asking our waitress if she liked dressing up when she came to work! Blog 5 - Provence Premier Suite When he and his friends left, they said Blog 6 - Bordeaux Premier Room fireplace they had an early day in Chicago or would have spent the night in our luxury hotel rooms that just opened. That would have been awesome!" Truth be told, this beautiful, vintage hotel with a lakefront setting has been on MY hit list for quite some time. My neighbors love it and we have been invited a few times but my schedule has never allowed us to go. Nestled in scenic beauty on Blog 7 - Champagne Luxury Suite Geneva Lake, this hotel was built in 1885 as a summer home for a wealthy family. Situated at 327 Wrigley Dr. in downtown Lake Geneva, this vintage, painted lady boasts 30 rooms, 13 fireplaces, nightly entertainment, a lakefront garden and is a Nationally Registered Historic property. Luxury suites begin at $340 and there are many packages available. I am sure Russell will be returning…and I hope I can meet him for cocktails in the lakefront garden! Godogood-1 I love feel-good stories, feel good movies and, of course, feel good campaigns! And this one is pretty special. Chicago Loop Alliance, along with the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, in support of their public art initiative, created the “GO DO GOOD” campaign. (You would only miss the brightly-colored yellow signs around town if you were living in a cave, which hopefully you aren’t!) This campaign is a summer long, citywide movement to prepare Chicago’s kids to succeed in school and to also encourage good deeds around town. The theme Events.Par.26414.Image.0.0.1 is based on the Chicago Loop Alliance’s commissioned “Go Do Good” art installation which is a six foot story mural by Midwest based, internationally-acclaimed contemporary artist, Kay Rosen. This 30-second PSA was produced by Julee White’s Testarossa Entertainment in association wih the Illinois Center for Broadcasting (that shot and edited the spot). Check it out (campaign ends on Sept. 10th) and GO DO GOOD!!! :)
